You might get a thousand dollars stimulus package

So reading that...if everything we are already doing across the world (I know some say people are still ignoring it, and maybe they are, but majority of planet is pretty much staying home at this point) is still going to result in 2 million deaths unless we have a vaccine, then I don't know what to say.

At some point other people will have issues that need to be addressed:
  • mental health
  • physical therapy
  • dental
  • veterinary
  • speech pathology
  • etc.......you catch my drift
I mean, how long can we do it? It's not supposed to be until we get a vaccine and cure, it's supposed to be until we flatten the curve. The goal was never for us to stop people from getting virus, but to stop people from getting virus all at once.
I’m under the impression this is a 15 day pause to slow down the spread so we don’t get a huge surge in our hospitals. The virus will be around for a while H1N1 was around for one year. The outbreaks will decrease as more people develop immunity.
Life has to go back to normal. Most of us will get the virus and recover. Hopefully the hotter months will make it harder on the virus.

Good luck with the theory that hotter months will help. I have a friend who lives in Singapore, which shares a border with Malaysia. It is ALWAYS summer in those two places. the border with Malaysia is now closed because of the rapid spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia. I don't think summer weather is going to help at.all.

Mine either. Just sporting events and concerts.
Mine was like that..then it all came crashing down so yeah...one day it was life was fairly normal, then limit to 1,000 attendees, then limit in another area to 250, then limit to 50, then limit to 10, then schools closing, then dine-in abilities removed, schools going on spring break and then told we don't know if you'll be taught online or no instruction for the rest of the school year, etc

When it happened it happened fast it started with merely canceling large events but only took a couple weeks for it to be completely different. Not saying that's what will happen in your area but while other states were doing extreme measures and mine wasn't it looked different, then my area started doing things and quickly looked very different.

The 15 days is related to limit to 10 people. The 10 people aspect spurned the restaurants and bars because containing to 50 people was a lot easier for those to dine in. When it was reduced to 10 that became a main issue so curbside, take out and drive through make that possible.

CDC still recommends as are as I know limit to 50 people and continue social distancing for 8 weeks total and that's just right now they likely will extend the time period.

Not to mention people had already been doing measures before this.

Well then what, let's say goodbye to everyone, close up shop and die in our respective homes? No hope, don't stay positive anyone, it's all lost?

Tired of dire predictions at this point. Everyone is doing what they can, maybe stop with the doomsday crap? Because if nothing is going to help, then I'm rethinking the point of killing our small businesses...

The economy won’t be shut down forever. Stores aren’t closed. My ability to by future travel hasn't been taken away.
Do you have a Penzey's, Lane Bryant, Yankee Candle, Bath and Body Works, banks, restaurants, indoor malls, etc? They are all closed here. Numerous stores are closed, as they should be.

Agreed. I’m out kids, see you later. This place has become worse than Twitter

I dislike when people complain about living in a high cost of living area. Move to a lower cost of living area and you solve it.

Well if they only did my job in a lower CoL area I would. It's not like they do my particular job in Indiana or Pennsylvania. They don't, I checked. I've been in this career for over 30 years. Sad, narrow view.

Something IS helping. Social distancing is helping. It's not a doomsday scenario. I don't believe that for one minute. But, there's a difference between having a positive outlook and being realistic. I'm a realist. Shrug. But, I'm also very optimistic that this is going to all be over, and we will rebound quickly once it is. Fundamentally, our economy is strong and resilient. Short term, it's going to suck. Long term, this will pass. Didn't mean to imply otherwise. :-)

Pointing out facts is not being dire or suggesting everyone is going to die.

I disagree. This is all speculation, not facts. (regarding what can happen)

But some people like to think of worst case scenarios to help them through, some people like to try and stay a bit more positive (which doesn't mean not being realistic) and some people like to not think about it at all!

I don't know I haven't been to a mall in twenty years. We have outdoor malls here. I'm not sure if they are closed, I'm not a huge shopper.

I assume things are going to vary by city and state. The original question was how would you spend your thousand dollars. The thread seems to have gone off the rails. The stores won't be closed forever. It could take a month or longer to get the checks and by that time we will be through the 15-day shutdown. Since this is a travel board I'm going to assume a lot of people that frequent the dis boards spend a lot of their disposable income on travel. If I do get the money that's where I would put it or I might hire someone to do some work around my house.

Just rip the check up if you get it

I haven't read through the whole thread so I apologize if someone has already answered this, but please don't just rip up the check. (caveat - perhaps this works differently for a federally issued check) Anytime a check goes uncashed, it causes all kinds of headaches for the issuing company. After a period of two years, the funds are required by law to be escheated to the state where it sits in their bank account earning interest until the person the check was written to comes to claim it (which is a whole other nightmare to try and get your money out). The issuing company can cancel the check as funds not due, but if a state audits you (and most of them are right now because they need money) you have to be able to prove the funds weren't due.

If you truly don't want the funds, donation really is a better option.

Hey, people mentioned the gift cards and small business thing and possibly being out your money, but like the reason I initially said the list of things I did was because those are all small businesses.

My comics I get from a small local shop. Pins are made by various small artists on Etsy, and Etsy is a great place to buy things. I know people that sell there personally. One of the people I know sells crystals and things at local flea markets and on Etsy. Also at the flea market is a nice used video game place that runs a site too.

There are also tons of other small businesses online. Grubhub is doing contactless delivery for food. They'll leave it on your porch and knock. They have a ton of small restaurants as options. Some restaurants are getting people to help, call and ask them if they're still open and if they have a delivery option. Ebay has some small independent storefronts if you look for them and avoid the mass market Chinese sellers. A few times a year I commission art from Tumblr because it makes me smile, you can have them draw any character you like. Want some cool Batman art or Mickey Mouse art for your wall? Find an artist you like then ask about commission prices. The money all goes right to the artist. Most small musicians have their own storefronts online now, or you can find someone you like and pledge to their patreon. There's tons of artist/musician/writers there, same with Kofi where you can tip small artists the price of a cup of coffee.

Even sitting at home there are lots of options to support people who do awesome work cooking or making art if you'd like to <3

I don't think we'll get to sustained Great Depression levels of unemployment but it going to be hairy. Whether it's 1K or 2K (or nothing directly) we get as stimulus money I won't be spending it on extras. I see hard times coming and and as usual it won't be pretty.

I think there is every indication we will hit Great Depression levels of unemployment - 25%. Mnuchin said to expect 20%.
People will spend their checks from the government on such things as food, rent, gas etc.
This is going to be bad!

And it seems like there is a thread every now and again on some DIS board either Community or Budget about how a majority of the American population does not have any savings. Don't think that the people who are already at home because their employer shut down (many of these small business) aren't the same people that don't have savings. Yes help from the government may be coming, but that is going to take some time. Even a few weeks is a long time if you have $0 savings. I do not mean this to be critical, but the DIS income skews to the higher side because of the nature of this site.
And many employers are going to do the right thing and try to pay their people. I get that. But if things stay shut down too long they may not have enough cash or access to loans to keep that going for weeks on end with no revenue.

Yes, yes I know cities are not allowing evictions for past due rent, and foreclosures take awhile to happen (car repos, etc.) but for many people this is going to cause a hole that is hard to dig out of. And if people can dig out, they are going to be spending less on non-essentials for sure.

Lower incomes mean less tax to collect and so it goes....

I am not a pessimist. But this is what is happening.

Yes- from all articles I have read - every American adult and child will receive the money - the direct deposit info would come from tax return filings (90% filed last year)
Others would receive paper check -
Both have to fall under the threshold ( reported anywhere from $65-90k
So any age child? So $3000 for a household of 3 with a minor child?

I know about 10 people who have been furloughed. Their jobs aren't going to pay them. Big companies too. These people will have to file unemployment. Unfortunately a lot of employers aren't going to be kind and pay their employees. They will get their last checks this Friday and as we know, most Americans have no savings. It may take weeks or months for unemployment to go through.
