Here I come again with another question. Should I get verified or is it easier to just use a credit/debit card to start an account with ebay. I do have a seperate checking/saving account aside from my husband & figure on using mine to sell. If I use mine is there a certain amount of $$ that needs to be in the accounts? Being its mine & I don't work theres really nothing but dust collecting in there, but I could always add $$ if theres an amount needed. I don't get insulted easily, I just go with the flow, so if I'm asking too many questions, just let me know & I'll try & figure this out for myself. In the meantime, thanks for answering so far.....

Denise:)

Hey Denise!! Don't worry about asking questions - that's what this thread is here for!!

I can't remember when, why, or how I got verified but I know I just started out with the debit card from the separate checking acct I opened..

There didn't "have" to be any money in there to get started but I think I put in like $50 or so - for the first time I had to pay eBay fees..

Got more questions? Ask away!! ;)
-----------------------------------------------------------

sandy3550 - I'm afraid I can't help you with that question - but I'm sure one of the more experienced ebayers will come along and help you any time now.. If your question gets buried back a couple of pages before you get an answer, just post it again - okay?

I'm curious though - WHAT are you listing that you need that many photos in one auction? 'Course you don't have to say if you don't want.. I'm just puzzled.. LOL

Hi Carol, I'm listing my kids last years school clothes & they are a HUGE lot of stuff. I have kind of separated my sons stuff into 3 groups, but they each have about 30-40 items in each of them, so I'm trying to get good pics of it all. And I still have to get to my daughters stuff. I'm still washing it right now, she is going into the 5th grade, so you can probably imagine the amount of clothes I will have from her. Believe it or not, I would probably be in the running for your packrat award and I'm just selling stuff from around the house that we don't use/need. I would love to see some of the stuff that you are selling. If you feel comfortable, please PM with your Ebay ID. Thanks for trying on the pics question. Sandy

Sandy, I think if I had your son's clothes to sell, I might try to break it down more, like maybe 5 outfits per listing... Then you could use the max ebay pics and take 1 shot of each outfit. Yes, it might be more work to box things separately, but it might be easier finding bidders in the market for 5 or 10 items than for 30 items. Just a thought.

I just finished selling some clothes over the last few weeks. I put them in groups of 8-10 items for each lot. They did well.

Just watch your shipping. The clothes seem to be the most expensive thing I've shipped. I charge a flat fee, and I was well under here. (It was okay because the clothes went for way more than I expected). I think I charged $6.75 for all 4 lots and they all ran closer to $8.00 to ship.

The lots all went for $25.00-$50.00 each. The more name brand items in a lot the higher price. If you have anything w/ tags still attached, and it's name brand, try listing separate. I recently listed a pair of Levi Jeans DS had gotten for Christmas. He never wore them, tags were still on. They brought in $19.50.

Can anyone that uses Turbo Lister tell me how I might be able to put more than 6 pictures in a listing? I have seen auctions that have like 20-30 pictures in it, which is close to what I am needing to do, and I don't know how I am going to accomplish this. I use an outside picture hosting so that isn't a problem. All your help is appreciated. Thanks, Sandy

Hi Sandy,

I use Microsoft FrontPage to layout my auctions. I have used up to 15 pictures and it works fine. There should be no problem using 30 pics. When I an done setting up the auction page, I go into the HTML view in FrontPage and select and copy everything between the <BODY> and </BODY> tags and paste it into the HTML view of the auction I create in TurboLister. Since you are hosting your pictures outside of EBay, you can just point to them in FrontPage.

One caveat, make sure when you save your page in FrontPage that you don't let it save the pictures to your hard drive. When it
saves them to the hard drive, it changes your <IMG> tags to stop pointing to the pictures on your hosting service and points to your hard drive instead.

Rick, that is great! I'm curious, though - did you sell the set as one listing, or did you break it up into lots?

I had actually sold them as a complete set though I went against the many suggestions not to do so. I probably would have made even more if I split the set up but I honestly didn't want to be bothered making multiple trips to the post office. I live in NYC and don't have a car so that would have been such a pain in the rear end!

Uh oh! What kind of board was it? Hopefully it was only good comments!

What kind of board was it?

it was an eBay yahoo board. Someone else posted because she had those dolls..and was surprised at the value. I had never heard of them, so that's why I remember it.

I just wanted to vent a little and hope you all don't mind! Noticing how many of you state that you won't bid on an auction that doesn't have shipping already stated I thought I would tell you about what happened to me. I recently won a book auction on ebay. It said $2.50 shipping for US. I am in Canada and did realize that the shipping would be more. BUT! They charged me $9.00 US for shipping!! I received the book today and the actual shipping was only $5.05! Since they had obviously not intended to charge handling fees if the winning bid was from the US why would they do that to a Canadian? I don't mind paying a small handling fee but felt that was a bit much. I also asked for them to state the actual price I paid for the book for customs so that I wouldn't pay extra fees but they said the value was more than what I paid. It certainly doesn't encourage anyone to buy more on ebay.
The seller hasn't left feedback for me yet obviously because they were waiting to see what kind of feedback I would leave. They have 100% positive so far. I just started selling recently and wouldn't want to get a negative because I wasn't happy with their transaction. Kind of a double edged sword working with ebay isn't it?

Thanks for listening!

How much does this book weigh? In the US - using media mail - you could ship approx. 3 and 1/2 pounds worth of books for $2.50 - so unless the book is quite heavy, they did in fact include a handling fee in their US quoted shipping fee..

I myself have a statement in my auctions that I do not ship to Canada.. Time and time again, someone from Canada will bid and win one of my auctions and then quick pay for it.. In order for me to find out what the postage is to Canada, I then have to totally package up the item - bring it to the post office so they can weigh it and quote me a price - pick up the customs form - bring the package back home again - email the winner with the shipping cost - wait for the additional payment - email them again to tell them that "No - I won't sign my name to a US Federal form saying an item is a "gift" when it isn't" - fill out the customs form - and then take the item back to the post office again to actually ship it.. On top of all of this running around, I cannot get Delivery Confirmation to Canada and that is something I am not comfortable with at all..

I'm not sure if you were overcharged on shipping or not, but I just wanted to give you some insight into the hassles of shipping to Canada from the US and why some people don't want to do it.. It's not as quick or as easy as one may think..

And yes - it is a double-edged sword working with eBay.. Doesn't matter if you're a seller or a buyer - sooner or later we all end up between a rock and a hard place........:(

I sell to Canada all the time (CAnn..you have a scale..why do you have to go to the PO to get the cost? If you need help, email me, and I'll walk you through it..it's as easy as getting domestic costs). But I state my shipping for most items, and on items where I don't, I tell them to e-mail. Since the $2.50 price was to US, I feel buyers have an obligation to email and ask what the shipping price is to Canada.

The seller may pay someone to do their packing, and since there is a form to fill out, and we can't use priority boxes, (or they may have to make a trip to the PO instead of having their postman take the package), that price may not be unreasonable. But even if you think it is, they don't deserve a neg or even a nuetral because of that, since you didn't ask. Now, do they deserve a neg/neutral because you paid extra customs fees, since they put the incorrect amount...yes. If it really bothers you, I would do two things..I would write and ask why the high shipping..and they may tell you..and if you had to pay extra customs, I would state that and ask for that difference back, because of their mistake), or in my posi (if it didn't cost you extra) I would just state, shipping seemed high, wrong amount put on customs form.

Just so you know, in eBay's terrible feedback system, they very well may leave you a neg in retaliation..it's the price you may have to pay, if you leave a neutral/neg. Unfair? Yes, but that's the way it is.

CAnn,

I will only look at auctions that state they will ship to Canada. Usually I try to find it here but some things you just can't find. This was a hardcover book and is heavy. I can understand the hassles of shipping to another country as I have done that with shipping to the US.

DMRick,

I hadn't planned on leaving negative feedback and understand that there may have been other circumstances that justified the costs. I just wanted to vent a little!! I did leave a positive feedback stating the positives of the transaction...fast shipping and book as described.

I am realatively new and still have lots of questions. I hope this isn't an inappropriate question, but ...

I have some Disney outfits (a sweatshirt and also a sweatsuit) that I bought at Disney World. Do you think it would be better to list on the DIS auctions or Ebay? I am kind of torn. I think the DIS auctions may be good because we are all Disney nuts and it might sell better. But then I think Ebay has a bigger audience. What would you do?

By the way, I just started a couple of weeks ago and already made over $200!! DH, who didn't want to go on another Disney trip this November, has even now agreed to go if I can pay for it with ebay money (we have APs so I only need to pay for hotel and food)! So YAY! I think I am going to Disney World! I started at a really great time because I have SOOO many Back to School clothes from my girls and these are selling GREAT right now! Thank you soooo much guys! This thread really inspired me to start selling!

Hope this doesn't double post..the Dis board is soooo slow I had to start over.

Do you think it would be better to list on the DIS auctions or Ebay

eBay IMO..disboards are dead. I fyou look at what has sold there..it's next to nothing. And only those of us who post here know about it..way more disnuts looking on eBay I believe.

I hadn't planned on leaving negative feedback

I wasn't sure, since you said they were obviously waiting for your feedback. I would still write her and ask why she put the higher amount on the customs tag..you may be helping the next Canadian she ships too.

I almost felt like I was doing something wrong when I sent my son a goody bag to Ireland (he lives there) and checked off the gift. I found myself explaining it was our son, to the post office gal..I was surprised they noticed it. I also had filled out the wrong form..packages over 4# take a different form than the one I usually fill out.

When putting a value on the customs form, do you put the actual cost of the items or the price sold on ebay?

I will be sending some books to Canada that sold for I think something like $4.95 but the actual cost of them is more like $25. Which do I put on the customs tag.

My tip o' the day-

Watch what price you start your listings at.

For example, any listings where you start the bidding @ 9.99 will cost you a listing fee of 30 cents. BUT if you start that listing @ 10.00 it will cost you 55 cents.

I see so many listings that start at 10.00 and it amazes me!

So take the time to learn the eBay insertion fee structure and use it to your advantage!

Starting Price, Opening Value or Reserve Price Insertion Fee
$0.01 - $9.99 -- $0.30
$10.00 - $24.99 -- $0.55
$25.00 - $49.99 -- $1.10
$50.00 - $199.99 -- $2.20
$200.00 and up -- $3.30

THanks so much for posting this. I am such a computer dummie. I found this list on ebay a few days ago and then went back to check on it again & for the life of me I couldn't find it. You must have read my pathetic mind. Now, if I can only find out on the USPS site which postal zone I'm in, I may be able to start selling in a few days(hint, hint) But anyway, thanks again. You just made it alittle easier for me.:D
