You HAVE to try this!! EBAY your way to DISNEY!!

There are several reason someone can cancel a bid. First thing that comes to my mind, since you said the item was then canceled (if I'm reading it right) was that you have to cancel bids before you can cancel an auction. He may have broken the item, found something wrong with it, or simply got an offer to sell off auction. Bummer for you, of course.

Ending the auction early to avoid final listing fees has been becoming more and more common on eBay the past few years. eBay discourages this practice but they could never enforce it. As a buyer, you will often get a better deal this way, because eBay, and auctions in general, online or otherwise, if well attended by the right buyers almost always benefit the seller. By asking the seller to end the auction early you are nullifying the auction process and buying at a fixed price, which has a better chance of working to the buyer's advantage.

Of course, as a seller, you have to weigh the risk of taking the short money now or waiting for auction close for most likely a higher price. It depends on the item and what it's worth to you.

Re: no bids till the end:

That usually means you either have an item that's not in popular demand or you priced it right.

Re: slow seasons:

While seasonal items may have seasonal highs and lulls, I'm not from the camp that believes strongly in eBay "slow seasons" and waiting for them to pass before listing. There are many other market factors at play here, such as the economy, supply and demand, collectible value, depreciation, and obsolescence. If you have something priced right that someone wants, it will sell at any time of the year. Some hours are better than others, some days, some weeks, some months. eBay continues to grow despite this and this growth can counteract "slow" seasons.

Re: no bids till the end:

I think bidders are getting smarter. Most of us use snipper programs..I know I hate to raise a bid and give people time to bid again. Judging by the end bidding on some items, I'm not alone.I am seeing pretty good buy it nows this week.

Some items have definate seasons, such as clothing, items that make good Christmas gifts, camping items, food canning items etc. I have been keeping track since I started on eBay, and my items are meant more for gifts. I'll be slowing way up within the next month and will take most of July and August off. However, if I just put up ordinary household items, it will go anytime, just not for as much as it does in the Fall. Collectibles seem to go pretty good no matter the time of year, since people collect all year long. Prices on everything I sell are higher in the Fall as people gear up to spend, however.

What are snipper programs?

it's actually sniper programs..sorry for the incorrect spelling. It's a program where we put in our high bid, but it doesn't post it until 3-9 seconds before the bid ends..and I don't have to be on line. It does it for me. It gets my bid in there, and doesn't leave time for others (unless they are using a sniper program too) to outbid me.
www.Vrane.com has one, as does http://auctionstealer.com/home.cfm

I'm also a happy autosniper user but I'd rather not say which one I use. Remember that even if you snipe, either manually or via an autosniper, the highest bid always wins. If two people have the same maximum bid, the earliest bid wins. Autosnipers don't help with these situations. All they do is hold your cards until the end in an attempt to keep the final value down and give you the last shot over the manual bidders.

Still, not everyone uses one, and you will get early bids if items are priced right to start and are in demand. You may also get early action if your starting bid is too low and you have a BIN price without a reserve. The first bid wipes out BIN. If you get a long lull then action within the final minute then your item was left to the wolves and is probably in demand and will end up successfully priced.

I lean more towards the theory that people are "learning" a lot about ebay (via infomercials in the middle of the night on t.v.; all the junk that comes via email; etc.) and the first thing they are learning is to wait until the last day, minutes, or hours to bid.. I'm basing my opinion on my own experiences since beginning to sell on eBay towards the end of March..

I have one particular category of items that I sell (in lots) and initially they were getting bids as soon as I put them up for auction.. Now the bids aren't coming till the last day, hour, or minutes, but I'm still ending up selling them within the same price range - just takes until the end to do so.. People are being "taught" to wait until the very end (unless of course it's an item they absoulutely MUST have) and they're heeding that advice..

Yesterday I researched a bunch of items I'm getting ready to put up and when I went to the completed auctions the proof was in the pudding.. Personally I don't care WHEN my items sell - as long as they DO sell - but it can be a downer when you're waitng all week and not seeing any bids.. I've now reached a point where I only check my auctions once a day because it's a waste of time to keep checking on them when the bids aren't going to come until the end anyhow..

Soooo.. For all you newbies - don't get discouraged if the bids aren't coming right away.. Eventually they will come.. And if you have an item you truly believe you have priced right and it doesn't sell the first time around, be sure to RELIST that item as soon as the first auction ends.. I have tremendous success with relisting and will only "not" relist if it suddendly dawns on me that my item may have been out of season or research shows that it's not in demand at this particular point in time..

Hang in there folks! The buyers will come - but probably at the very end!!

shovelhd, thank you for your comments on the possibility of anti-spam attempts blocking emails. I hadn't thought of that, and I think I'll try one more email to my buyer from a different account before I mail their check back.

Nik's Mom,

I'm very new at Ebay myself, but I agree with what others have said about people waiting until the last minute to bid. It's amazing, but quite true!

Did you check some completed auctions for items similar to what you are selling? I know I have some things I thought about listing but probably won't since no one else seems to be having luck. I'll also "watch" items similar to something I'm thinking of selling, and you can see how they get bids at the very last minute, so you might want to pick a couple things to watch that close in the next day or so just so you can "see" it happening, LOL. Of course you can look at the bid history on completed items also and see that many things get their bids at the very last minute, too. Just some things to keep you busy and help you keep faith while you wait for your auctions to end!

And I also agree about relisting - I had a couple things that didn't sell, but did when I relisted. As C.Ann said, think about it, but if it's still seasonally appropriate, etc., try relisting. You might even "tweak" it a bit - I've added detail to the listing, especially if I can highlight the item's usefulness for the summer (ie, great for summer travel, or rainy days, etc.) If you relist, you might want to move your ending dates to see if that helps, too.

Good luck!

There is a javascript you can put in your auctions so you can track how many people are "watching" them. It really helps calm your nerves (when there are no bids on an item) to be able to see that there are people interested in it. The page you go to is

http://zebulun.documedia.co.uk/ebay/watch.asp

and this is the actual script http://zebulun.documedia.co.uk/ebay/watchv2.htm

It is from an Ebay member from the UK and it works great. Just bookmark the first page and make sure you put the script into your auction listing description- bidders won't be able to see it. Then all you have to do is plug the auction number into the page above and it will tell you how many times the "watch this item" has been clicked on that particular item. You don't need to sign up or login to use this site.

I had a lot of books up that didn't get any bids at first but there were 8 people watching them so I didn't worry. The books ended up just short of $80 with all of the bids on the last day- most in the last hour.

It really is a fun tool to put into your auctions.

I need to sell more auctions!!!! I have a little more than a month to go before our 4th of July trip and I had saved enough money to pay for the hotel in cash (HRH, Entertainment rate $125 per night for 8 nights!) and DH made me take that cash to pay a chunk of the balance on my credit card! My theory was to pay cash for the hotel and he says to pay the credit card first. If I end up charging the hotel bill, there goes the credit card again!

Anyway, I'm threatening to list him on Ebay, for sale, one Mr. Fixit, hard-working, good-looking guy. Can fix anything! Always working (workaholic). Loves kids, but hates Disney (can you believe it?) All around good guy, who I would NEVER trade or sell!

I'm thinking of listing my DD's two princess dress up sets, Little Mermaid and Belle, complete with crowns, wigs and shoes. Anyone have any thoughts on what category to list them in? Should I go under Toys, Hobbies, Pretend? Or should I list them under Disneyana? Also, I don't know how much to list them for. Some suggestions please. Thanks everyone
Barbara (ebay is Barbnbrianct)

LOL, barbnbrian! I sold my son the same way a few pages back!! BTW, I'd bid on your DH! :teeth:

Great site, Padme. Thanks for the link!

OMG! I have 18 bids on my Disney Cruise item! I got it from my job, it was a promotional item for the cruise we were giving away, I brought it home and my macho kid couldn't be bothered with it. When I started ebaying I thought, "I wonder if I can sell this?" BOY have I! It looks like it will be a fight to the finish based on the emails I'm getting. And it has 8 hours to go!
:bounce: :bounce:

pssst, barbnbrian, I bid on one of your items! It'll be great fun for my son and I over the summer vacation! :smooth:

Padme...I am so slow to learn computer things! Where do I list the script on my auction? Do I just cut and paste it to the end of my description?? It really sounds like a feature I'd like to add.

Also, my cat's been really a pain in the butt lately. She better watch it or she's up next for the auction block. "Big, fat, lazy, lovable, wouldn't give up for the world feline for sale, priceless"!
If you are a member of PITA, please don't flame me, I wouldn't give up my furry buddy for the world!

Hi everyone.
Boy, I love all the information!
Thanks.
I am going to start listing this weekend.
I am still taking pictures.
I never thought "not" to list products if not in season:rolleyes:
Thanks:D

Thanks Robinrs. I figured out who you are on Ebay and went and checked out your auctions. Boy the Disney character thing is HOT! I listed a Winnie the Pooh & Friends in a Honey Pot that came from the Disney Store, but I listed it under Collectibles, Disneyana. From the counter at the bottom I could tell it was only viewed 11 times. I noticed what category you put your Disney item under and went and revised mine. I relisted it under Toys, Hobbies, Characters, Winnie the Pooh. I hope I get just as many bids as you're getting. Boy would I love to sell this for a good price!

It's actually Peta....but believe me the initials you used sometimes fit my cat better.
eBay won't let you sell your cat, otherwise I'm sure I would have tried LOL!!

Susan,

Just copy and paste it at the end of your description. You could put it at the beginning if you wanted but I think it's easier to tack onto the end. Noone will be able to see it on the posted auction. It's interesting to see the number of views with the counter and the actual number of people who are watching the auction.

Good luck with it.

Happy Ebaying!!:) :) :) :) :)

Yes, barbnbrian, I've found that all of my Disney stuff gets LOTS of views and always sell. This is great because I have a personal Disney store of my own! My son has tired of most of it so it gives me alot to give away.

Right before I left on vacation I found a box of stuff he never unpacked when we moved to our new house. A virtual goldmine of stuff! I plan to start putting them up the minute I get back!

Susan: I'd put up my FOUR cats if I could also! ... NOT!! Right now they're driving my sister insane. They're all under the age of 3 and adorable! :teeth:

Hey - the "star" next to my eBay indentity has gone from GOLD to BLUE !!

What does that mean? Something GOOD, I hope !!!!!!!
