Yikes! Washing Machine! QUICK!

My washer (9yo cheap topload one) ...I put clothes in, started the cycle, it filled with water, now it just goes "T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T-T"...SO I tried to turn it to drain the water (it obviously doesn't feel like agitating!) It says "t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t" -- quicker and quieter than when on the agitate part of the cycle. I guess I'm lucky that I only paid a couple hundred $ for a washer 9 yrs ago, and have not sunk a penny into it. Now I have to figure out, does this sound worth getting a repair guy over? We are NOT HANDY at all. I have NO CLUE about how much repair attempt might run. Or would it cost practically the same to suck it up, buy a new washer?

Any idea if front-load ones (don't have annoying agitators I guess) can use the same old laundry soap, etc? If I am going to toss a few hundred $ at a new washer, I might as well toss another hundred or 2 in, so I can get something more reputable. Quick! Gotta buy it this afternoon, or set up repair this afternoon!!

Hi - it sounds like you might want to consider getting a new one! If yours is 9 years old and you only paid a couple of hundred for it - it has lived a good life to this point!! Calling for a service call will be approx. $75 (depending on your area) and then there is the cost for parts and repair on top of that.

Most front load washers now state that you have to use HE detergent. Our repair guy said that they are getting pretty strict on warranty work if they see non-HE soap around.

thanks. I guess I will see if the grocery store will let me trade in my brand-spankin' new bottle of laundry detergent for the HE kind, then. Once my new washer arrives on Friday, that is. Now I have a ton of wet clothes in the old washer to rinse well, ring out, and dry so that I can re-wash them when the washer comes.

Why can't washers break when NO clothes are inside? (that was a joke, btw...washers could wait till the END of the washing to break, though.).
