Finishing employee reviews today, so our VP calls me in for mine and its all glowing, no complaints etc.. and says here's your 1% pay increase and okay's same % for my employees. Fine with me as we weren't expecting anything this year.

I do all my employees reviews and inform them of 1% increase.

My last one reports to me but works much more with the VP than myself. She has been written up once by me this year and once by him for being late, bad attitude, bad work etc... Three times in 12 months is termination. We both are present for her review. VP tells her about bad attitude, attendance, poor work quality and then drops the bomb. Here is you 9% pay increase. I was like what the ****. It was largest increase in the corporate office by the way.

Think I'll just screw off this year and make some real money next year. No the next recruiter that call me with a juicy job offer, bye bye

OMG!! Are we missing any of the story? Can you ask the VP why? (Since you are planning to leave eventually anyway). UNBELIEVABLE!!!

to be fair...was this woman's salary VERY LOW to begin with? maybe she was giving the extra 8% just to get her up to where others are?

I wish that was the case. Its not! I'm trying to calm down a little today before I ask why tomorrow.

The question about do they have something going on. That was one I was just asking myself!

How could a VP justify 8%, after sitting there and telling this person how horrible they are doing? Goodness, is this person related to the VP in any way?

reminds me of a co-worker. her husband worked in payroll of the company (was like auditor/contoller) and had a lousy work ethic. at some point the company discovers that the guy has given himself significant pay raises over the past few years. to "save face" the company negotiates a voluntary resignation (and payback). the guy then goes on to get another job-and USES THE HIGHER (EMBEZZELED) PAY RATE to get a much higher starting salary  uh, yeah thats fair..... :crazy2:

If so, he was a dumb *** to do it in front of someone else (meaning you)! My jaw is truly agape at this one.

The 9% for screwing up is hard enough to take but the 1% is down right insulting. Time to start looking for another job.

Ok, forgot to ask. What was HER reaction? Did she seem surprised? Pleased? Or like she expected it? 9% increase is huge in this economy. I would have fainted if they called me in here and gave me that, and I have a great rep, have never been fussed on for anything in 9 years, etc (knock wood)

This was my thoughts too. Maybe she was below the minimum pay for her title and so she got a raise to meet the minimum.

If my boss told me I was getting a 9% pay increase, I think I'd faint. No one gets a 9% pay increase these days. Something's up.

BTW, my FIL is a contract negotiator, and he tells me that the average pay increase for moving up a level is 8%. Did she get promoted? And if she did, after all the write ups and the lousy review, I'm with the others...I'd be looking.

She had the same look of shock that I had. I think she thought she was getting fired. She has not relation to anyone in the company as far as I know. Yes, I agree that 9% is huge especially after a 20 minute ringing at the hands of the #2 guy in the company. Our VP has proven himself to be a moron numerous times in the past few years but this one baffles me!

A 9% raise is ridiculous. I mean if you are the one getting it then great. I deal with salary negotiations every day and this is outrageous. I would be very upset. Around here 3 to 5% is standard.

Now, if she had been hired for one position at a lower salary and was performing the duties of a higher task, then ok - i can see 9%. I would have called it a salary increase and not a annual raise.

Please update us after you talk to the VP!

Kelly

is she married/single? is the VP? I guess more often than not it doesn't matter.

I had the same experience last year during annual reviews. One employee who reports to me got a nearly 16% salary increase despite getting a rating of "competent." Others with the same rating got around 3.5%.

Turns out she had complained to HR that her promotion in the previous year (2003) put her at the low end of the salary range for her job grade. She felt this was unfair, because everyone else was at a higher salary rate. :confused3

Anyway, now her salary is comparable to everyone else's even though her performance is somewhat below expectations this year.

Don't try to understand it. It's one of life's imponderables.

Unfortunatley the fact that HE gave her a big raise is not unheard of, I bet all of us have some sort of story about someone else we work with (doing substandard work) getting a good raise. The issues you raised might not really bother him, if he doesnt have to deal with her attitude/ lateness, etc on a daily basis that is what happens.

I had a co-worker (small office 3 ladies) do the same stuff, show up on time once a week, get upset and leave!, all sorts of metal hell we went through with her. One week of that would be enough to fire her. But she smooshed him (i.e. flirt) and looked nice (short skirt) so she got away with murder. It sucked to work with her, she did half her work load (on a good week) this went on for a year. (I was looking for other work but the ecomony is horrid here) Then he got fired and so did she, hmmmmmm!

Hopefully her karma comes around soon to kick her in the butt! (Gotta love Earl)

Just thought of this thread and remembered you were going to talk to the boss the next day about it... Just wondering what happened. Don't leave us hanging!
