"We now have Disney's Classic 'Song of the South' on DVD."

Kind of blatant, isn't it?

Do they sell it in other countries?

I'm more than likely being obtuse, but I don't understand the issue? What is the problem with a store advertising what they have for sale?

Maybe the OP could go inside the store and get the skinny on what is being offered. Maybe it's legit somehow. I'm quite curious now...

If I saw this sign at our bookstores, I'd run in to buy it. It's a wonderful movie. The Brer Rabbit stories were written at Laura Plantation which is 30 minutes from my house. The language is idiomatic of the times. Each story all has a moral.

Yep, I'd run in and buy it too. I have the European VHS tape (purchased for me when overseas) and a copy made from that on another friend's European conversion tape player. Had asked my parents go look for a DVD version when they were in Australia but they were unable to find it...I didn't know that a DVD version wasn't ever released, even in Europe. Too bad about that! Cute story, I remember seeing it in the movie theatre as a child.

I bought it on laser disc (if even someone else remembers those) for a friend when I was in Japan.

I would love to have it too. I wonder exactly what the store was advertising?

When my boys were little, I had a large hard back book with several stories in, written from and with pictures from Disney movies. It had some of the Song of the South stories and The Three Little Pigs, I don't remember what else. Anyway, they loved for me to read the story where Brer Rabbit gets thrown in the brier patch over and over. I know they would have loved to see the movie.

I personally think it is a shame you cannot (easily) get Song of the South on dvd. James Baskett (Uncle Remus) gave an absolutely wonderful performance and it is unfortunate that his work can't be enjoyed.

I agree that it's a shame that Song of the South is unavailable - The Brer Rabbit stories are charming and the movie was wonderful. As a previous poster mentioned, the language was idiomatic of the time - just like Huckleberry Finn or Gone with the Wind, to name two other books that get targeted for language and characterization.

It's not banned, Disney has just chosen not to release it on DVD. You can bet they will before it becomes public domain though.

Sorry, used the wrong word. I thought I saw "banned" on one of the sites I was looking at.

I would have gone in the store and bought it too.

I may have considered buying it, but I actually found a copy at Goodwill the other day.

I have a "copy of a copy" VHS tape that someone made for me several years ago. It is from Japan, and has Japanese subtitles when the songs are sung.
