XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

OK, I haven't read much of this thread but I thought it was appropriate to ask my question here:

What's up with the medal ceremonies? Why are they not giving out the medals immediately after the competition? I mean, that's why they are there... You compete to get a medal, and if you win, you should get it right away. What am I missing here? I have not heard anyone on NBC mention why they are waiting 24 hours to give out the medals. Thx!

It's pretty common to do it that way. For a majority of the sports, they wait until the evening and get their medals at a large ceremony. They did it this way in China too. For some events, it isn't practical to get to the medal plaza so they get their medals at the venue following the event.

David Pelletier was doing some of the commentary on our Canadian station and he said something like "...and that's why you don't let the competition design your costumes.":rotfl: They truly were hideous!

Every time a pair use a costume that doesn't fit the traditional figure skating costume, people freak out. A number of years ago, there was a couple from France that went their own way and people were appalled.

I say to each their own. Is it an athletic competition or a fashion competition??

I also thought the two dressed like clowns, looked like...wel...CLOWNS.:clown:

It isn't about tradition...it's about taste. The blue jumpsuits looked stupid.

I thought it was cool that she was in pants-until the camera moved closer. I've got no issue with breaking the mold and trying something different-I just thought the color was bad and the music was too.

How does impact on what they do on the ice? One of the US skaters has real fur on his costume; should that be an issue?

If this couple were good enough to win the gold, the costumes wouldn't be discussed as much.

I agree and would add that they were not the best skaters out there.

Like figure skating is judged on skill anyways. That was proved at the last olympics with Sale and pellier. At least judging on the suits would make more sense than deciding a winner before anyone hits the ice.

I thought the Chinese pair was brilliant and deserved the marks they received. The Russian pair that fell-not so much. They got VERY generous marks.

I will admit, I do not come from a figure skating background so this is just my opinion as a casual watcher but I think wearing costumes like that actually distracts from the athleticism and puts the focus onto fashion. I'm sure the vast majority of people watching took notice of the blue suits- and I know it certainly distracted me from the actual skating.

I agree, to each their own- it's their own performance, they can wear what they like! But by competing in such a public arena, you are opening yourself up to opinion, both good and bad.

1. I am not the judge so my opinion doesn't matter. It's just my opinion. They skated OK IMO, but their outfits looked stupid.

2. Fur is not an issue for me. YMMV.

3. Johnny Weir WAS good enough to contend for gold when he wore that comical "swan" outfit years ago. his skating was breathtaking...his outfit...silly.

These are just my opinions.

Yay Bode!

This has nothing to do with the games themselves, but that AT&T commercial with the snowboarder snowboarding into space has the single worst version of the song "Perfect Day" I have EVER HEARD. I can't lunge for the mute button fast enough every time it comes on (which is constantly). It's a gorgeous commercial to watch with no sound, though.

Again not related, but the P&G commercial that ends with the tagline, "To their moms, they'll always be kids", the one with all of the kids as Olympic athletes-- that sucker makes me cry every time it's on. What a FANTASTIC commercial!

ETA: It's this one, for anyone who may not have seen it yet.

Oh, that's an awesome commercial. You could see that mom's heart in her throat as her 'baby' started down the ski jump.

During the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, my DS said to me, "Mom, are you going to cry at all the commercials?" I told him I didn't remember crying at any of the commercials in the past, but he said he remembers, sure enough that night, I was crying at the commercials, especially this one! :goodvibes

Oh I love that commercial too! :lovestruc
