XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

Again not related, but the P&G commercial that ends with the tagline, "To their moms, they'll always be kids", the one with all of the kids as Olympic athletes-- that sucker makes me cry every time it's on. What a FANTASTIC commercial!

ETA: It's this one, for anyone who may not have seen it yet.

My favorite! And I don't even HAVE kids!

I had surgery a few years back and my parents drove all the way up from FL to be with me in NJ. Of course, I tried to talk them out of it-it was in January!-and my mother said: "The difference in our ages is the same now as it was the day you were born. We don't care how old you are, you're our baby and we will be with you through this"

That commercial brings back the same feeling I had the day she said that and YES I get all misty.

1. I am not the judge so my opinion doesn't matter. It's just my opinion. They skated OK IMO, but their outfits looked stupid.

2. Fur is not an issue for me. YMMV.

3. Johnny Weir WAS good enough to contend for gold when he wore that comical "swan" outfit years ago. his skating was breathtaking...his outfit...silly.

These are just my opinions.

I agree with you which is why I think making a big deal out of bad (or good) outfits is rather funny. I would rather talk about the performance.

My parents are the exact same way with me, too, and I wouldn't have it any other way. :goodvibes

Sports, for some reason, get me every time. Other women cry at movies like Terms of Endearment, Beaches, etc., and I cry at Miracle, Major League (especially when Bob Uecker is screaming at the end, "The Indians win the pennant! The Indians win the pennant! OH MY GOD, the Indians win the pennant!!" Like ALL of these commercials have had me misting up (except the aforementioned AT&T one, because the annoyance factor's too high. Lol.)

My DN and I are sports movie junkies and we both cry at them all the time. She warned me to wait for the DVD for Blind Side if I didn't want to embarass myself "boo hooing" at the movies like she did! :rotfl:

So there is a poll on the CTV (the Canadian network) asking whether there should be a mercy rule in Olympic hockey. So far the results are 51% against. I think there should be, I don't think that running up the score and humiliating the other team follows the ideal of good sportsmanship that should be at the heart of the Olympics.

Only if they stop using number of goals as a tie breaker when setting games going into the medal round. It is the tie breaker rule that causes teams to run up the score.

Oh yes, I understand that - yes that would have to change.

I meant to say that I hate seeing the score run up like that, and would support a rule change (not that anyone is actually asking me). But, the tie-breaker rule would need to change as well.

I still have no clue how figure skating is scored. I agree with Dick Button...I miss the old system...where a fall meant no medal, and everybody wanted that 6.0

Look's like SUI is going to win the daily double for the gold medal...Men's Downhill and the 15K X Country Race.

Is anyone else having trouble with the "get local listings" thing at nbcolympics.com? I was relying on it while housesitting out at my parents' house to follow various events and know which channels to flip to, and now that I'm back home, the stupid thing is kicking out bogus faults. I already wrote to complain, but was wondering if anyone else is seeing this.

ETA: Never mind. Now it magically works. I bet the PTB at NBC could feel my rage radiating through the intarwebs and realized that they should not mess with me and my Olympics!!! RAHHHHH!!!!

Each team deserves to have the same amount of ice time in the preliminary rounds. A mercy rule would shorten that ice time for both the winning and losing team. Losing teams need that game time to improve by playing against better teams and winning teams need that game time to organize themselves as a team. I don't think the Slovakian team looked embarrassed. The crowd gave them a resounding standing ovation recognizing their effort and the fact that they were playing in the Olympics.

As a hockey mom who has been on both sides of that mercy rule, I've never liked it and neither did the team.

I agree! I am a parent of an athlete and no matter how old he is, he is still my little guy!

Oh, and that little girl at the end of the commercial on the ice is just too cute! Yeah, hook, line, and sinker, that commercial pulls my heart strings.

I just watched the link - definitely a great one!

I completely agree. You got to see every judges score whether it was a 4.9 or a 6.0. I don't know the new system.

Yes, I'm with you both. It is just like gymnastics now. Before the highest score was 10.0. Now it is a combined number just like ice skating. Still trying to figure it out myself.

I 100% agree with you there.

Even when they show all (I guess) of the scores and then the combined total in figure skating, I still don't know what kind of reaction to have until I either hear the crowd cheer or the commentators say something. Crazy. I am SO GLAD the sport I was involved in involved no judges but stroke judges. I couldn't handle that. Give me a nice, timed event anytime. :thumbsup2
