XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

Ohno has had the benefit of wipeouts and disqualifications moving him up the medal stand several times in the past. I don't argue that. Eventually, your luck runs out and you end up on the losing end and I'd say his luck ran out tonight. I don't even argue that he should not have been disqualified in tonight's race. All I am saying is that IMHO, (please note the "O" ;)) the Canadian eventual gold medal winner was every bit as guilty of causing the Korean he was overtaking to wipeout as Ohno was of causing the other Canadian to fall. Yet only one of them was DQd. :confused3 It could certainly be argued that the Canadian's (Hamelin?) actions cost the Korean the gold medal. I'd just have liked some consistency.

Although....what would have happened if Ohno and Hamelin had BOTH been DQd? That would have left only two in the final, with three medals to hand out. Would the bronze have gone to the winner of the B Final? Hmmmmm........ Now, that would have been interesting.
Well I was watching the race on Rogers Sportsnet which is one of the three networks in Canada broadcasting the games and they said the Korean skater put his hands on Charles Hamelin skate which caused him to fall, so in that siutation the Canadians did nothing wrong.

Yep, the bronze would have gone to the winner of the B Final. At least that's what I thought I heard. The announcers said it is rare but it does occasionally happen that there are not enough finishers in the A Final so some of the medals would go to racers in the B Final.

Yep - which is why the skaters have to take the B final seriously. Winning the B final can get you a medal.

Went back to listen to the interview with Ohno. In all fairness, he didn't come out moaning, he was asked a direct question on American TV. He made his comments on his race and didn't mention the judge until he was asked that particular question. Did he think it was because the official was Canadian? He answered honestly. Its not like he came out guns blazing and whining. I kind of got the impression that this is how he felt but he knows thats the sport. It can go either way , on any day.

Ill see how the rest of his interviews go.

You are right. I now realize I only caught the end of the interview. Still not nice but I don't think he would have said it either ( on camera at least ) if the reporter didn't ask. Flipping back and forth to the hockey game didn't help either.

All the commentators said that Hamelin did not do anything to the Korean guy, he fell on his own the it looked like he grabbed Hamelin skate.

I really don't know what I will do once the games are over....maybe get some sleep since I have watched well into the night.

If he wanted to he could have simply not made the comment in regard to that question. This single comment has caused many people to lose respect for him.

Mature people will not be swayed by a comment coaxed out of him by a TV analyst trying to get a reaction.

And many others believed what he said had validity. Ohno was disqualified for doing exactly what was done to him in many other races without disqualification.

There were other touches in that same heat without disqualification.

We think he was extremely professional in his matter of fact response. No anger, no throwing a fit on the ice like some others have done.

It's the nature of that sport, and if he sees it that way, then so should the rest of us who are not engaged in that sport. After all, he is clearly more credible than any armchair skater. LOL.

No matter, on with the games.

He was asked a direct questions with a yes or no answer. He answered honestly. I prefer that than the almighty politically correct tones just to not upset people. He wasnt rude, spiteful, petulant or whinny. I can see how it might upset or offend people, but that's just my take on it,regardless of whether I agree with him or not.

So, how did the team short track go last night? I couldn't seem to keep my eyes open long enough for it.

We were lucky to win Bronze. Canada owned the ice last night. Had China not slipped in the last 30 feet, we would have come in 4th...

Thanks! That seems to be the standard this year. We've received a couple of medals in speed skating because of falls.

Not answering that question wouldn't be political correctness but rather good sportsmanship. He can think it all he wants and talk about it to his coaches and team-mates but don't say it to the media. It makes him sound bitter and a poor sport.

I think it's strange that Apolo's slip in the 1000m the other night was caused by the Canadian skater putting his hand on him. Ohno was extremely lucky (and super talented) to be able to catch back up to win bronze. Last night he was disqualified for the same thing.

Some of these 'athletes', and I use the term loosely, need to pull up their 'big boy pants and big girl panties ' and suck it up. Quit cheating...and when you aren't 1st and perhaps 2nd or 3rd that is still pretty darn cool and maybe you got there just because you were just a little less than you needed to be to get there first ! Lose the sullen faces and quit the whining. I think the behaviour of some in these Olympics is shameful.

... I think the behaviour of some in these Olympics is shameful.

I think that the behavior has been, by and large, incredible. Can't let a few bad moments ruin it for you. Thousands of athletes did everything right... :goodvibes

Well, I did say the behaviour of 'some' not all. Hats off to those that were elated at their win. To those with the long faces upon receiving silver or god forbid bronze, for shame.

I know - I would just hate that this be the image that sticks. Too many great images...

What terrible weather the snowboarders are having. All that rain and fog. Half the time you can't even see them on the hill.

Edit....Yeah another gold. Sad they have to have the medal ceremony in the fog. Couldn't see there faces very well.

Another Gold in Pursuit skate!! We are on a roll the last few days.
