Wyndham palms vs DVC

Hi Folks,



I have a friend who is interested in DVC because I have a membership, but he keeps on telling me that Wyndham Palms is better then any DVC time share, Now how can that place compare with theming say at VWL, I have seen Wyndham and it is just a typical apartment style complex built around a golf course, whats so good about that place. I think he is just trying to put my DVC membership down because he can get into Wyndham with a cheap timeshare. I would like to hear your comparson of DVC vs Wyndham.

It's simple: DVC is in Disney World. Wyndam isn't. What else needs to be said?

DVC is in Disney World.

Which is the only reason to buy DVC in the first place. If your friend is planning on exchanging often, he\'s better off with Wyndham.

I have stayed there and it is very nice but to compare it to DVC is silly. What this usually means is that this person is not really a "Disney" person. If you are just a casual fan of WDW, you will never make it through the mental rationalizing of a DVC membership. In the end, people like us love Disney and we join just to be part of the Disney experience even if it costs us more.

If we try to "prove" DVC membership is a mathematically superior approach, I think we may be wrong. However, we can "prove" that staying at a DVC resort is magical for us and the convenience of DVC membership and the identification with it as DVC members provides us with value beyond dollars.

PS If you do go every year and stay at premium resorts at Disney, it does seem very plausible that we are in fact getting a good deal.

We stayed at the Wyndham Palms last February and HATED IT!!!
It is too apartment style. I guess if you like that then it would be ok for you. SSR and OKW look like elaborate upscale resorts compared to the Palms. The pools were small and there was not enough places to eat. You could also tell that someone else stayed in the room before you.
It really felt like we were staying in someone's apartment for the week.
Not mind kind of vacation. But we love the Disney atmosphere so we don't mind paying the Disney premium.

Actually, I'm not sure that is necessarily true. As I understand, most Orlando properties are difficult to exchange because of the tremendous availability of properties and excess supply. Not sure that another Orlando property will dominate DVC's on-site advantage in the same way as high quality properties in other locations, but I may be wrong.

For exchanging mostly, NO Orlando timeshare makes sense. But for a combo of usage and exchanging, I'd go with something with either a points alternative or an internal trading preference. RCI points, Bluegreen, Fairfield, Hyatt, Hilton & Marriott come to mind.

Some people will never understand Disney. I have stopped trying to make them see the light. The way I see it the less people I get on my WDW bandwagon the less people standing in front of me at Soarin'.

Trying to explain why I love Disney is like trying to explain why I love my husband. It's that intangible feeling you get. Our love for Disney is why we choose DVC above the others.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion (even if they are wrong )

We are doing a similar type of comparison of timeshares and for going to WDW there isn't any comparison to DVC. We are looking at Fairfield primarily because we don't want to go to the same place each year and want to trade within Farifield and outside of it. Still, even looking at Fairfields Bonnet Creek resort that they advertise inside the gates of WDW, (Talk about being on the edge of misleading!) and looks like a very nice resort we would still either try to trade into DVC through II or just pay to stay on site rather than try another resort in Orlando if we wanted to go to WDW. Things like the proximity, transportation, availability of the dinning plan, the magical express, EMH, package delivery to your room and such. I just can't see how if you are going to WDW any other resort compares.

Having said that if we were inclined to not go to Disney but wanted to do other things like Golf, Universal, Sea World and such then another resort would make sense and be lots cheaper. Our solution, we think, to that is to have something else like FF and stay there for our non Disney time, if we were to ever really have non Disney time, and stay on site for the Disney time. Of course with the ticket pricing the way it is now those extra days at Disney are just so darn inexpensive it is hard to imagine doing anything else.

Many people actually prefer staying off site even for totally Disney related trips.

Wyndham Palms is a nice resort. We have stayed there before with family and enjoyed it. But it's not an onsite Disney resort experience. Although, it really only took us about 7 minutes to get to Boardwalk from Wyndham Palms.

I think besides DVC, the Marriotts in Orlando are my favorites. But I prefer DVC/Disney resorts when I'm there for Disney. If you're doing Universal and Seaworld, Marriott's Cypress Harbour, Marriott Grande Vista, and Marriott Horizons are great.

I would like to own a Marriott along with our DVC if I had my way. DVC for mostly Disney stuff. And Marriott for everywhere else I want to go.

I don't know much about Fairfield. I know Bonnet Creek looks nice, but I've heard all Fairfields aren't that nice. I hear a lot of positive comments about the Hilton vacation club. There is so much out there with all these different companies.

Too bad some of the big name brands (Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Disney, etc.) haven't formed some kind of mini exchange company between themselves. I always like to ponder what could be with the vacation clubs that are out there.

We just sold our week at Wyndham Palms. We loved Wyndham Palms, but decided that we liked DVC. It's a lot more money, but it's onsite, and our trips are not always Saturday-Saturday. The flexibility of going to Disney anytime (as long as you have the points) is great! With ME, we don't have to get a car rental. The only negatives to Wyndham Palms, other than not being on-site and needed a rental car, is that they usually try to get you into a sales pitch to upgrade your ownership, and you have to II an exchange fee to use a week other than the one on your deed.

We liked our ownership at Wyndham Plams, but we LOVE our ownership at Disney.

No comparison. DVC is....well....DVC. We own Fairfield and love our Fairfield points. We have also stayed at Bonnet Creek (our first night before check in at OKW). It is a beautiful resort, but again it is not onsite Disney.
