WWYD sold an item online

I sold one of my diaper bags (a ju-ju-be) on FB in a group that was specifically for buying/selling/trading this brand of diaper bags.

I listed it in EUC, noting that there was some normal wear marks on the bottom of the bag from where it got sat on the floor. Asked half of what I bought it for. I sent detailed pictures to the interested buyer, including pics of the wear marks on the bottom corners of the bag.

As I was going through it a final time before I packed it up, I noticed there were some red marks on the inside of one of the compartments. I told the buyer about this and took pictures for her. She asked if I thought all the signs of wear would wash out & I said that I didn't know, but guessed that they would since the bags have always washed up so well for me. I also used a Tide stain pen on a couple of the red spots and after just a couple dabs, they started to come up nicely.

But I told her that if she was overly concerned about it, I would refund her her money less shipping if she was unsatisifed after it arrived.

I got an email from her yesterday saying that the bag arrived and none of the marks came off in the wash and she wanted me to refund her $10 because of this.

WWYD? I'm tempted to say no... I sold her the bag as used & gave pictures of all of the areas that were not in perfect condition. I'm also skeptical about her efforts to wash it because, like I said, all I did was use a Tide To Go pen and it started to come up.

Naturally, if she wants to return it, I'll definitely honor that... I've already had a couple other emails from people who were interested.

OK - I am just asking a question. If all it would take was a "tide-to-go" or other stain stick to wash out the stains - then why didn't you do that before you listed it. Then you would have known for sure if it would have come out or not.

Now - you have no way of knowing if it worked or not. You've already told her you would refund her money less shipping - so it would bother me that now she is trying to play "lets make a deal".

Personally - this is what I would do - tell the buyer you are sorry - and offer to refund the money (less the shipping). See how she responds. Especially since you have had other interest in this item. This just might help determine if she is "playing" you.

I'd go with your original offer- sounds reasonable to me. It's a used bag- if she wanted a new one, she should have bought a new one. :confused3 Do the refund minus shipping, but not just send her $10 for her troubles. You did what you could and told her the truth about it and told her what her options were. It's not a make your own price kinda deal I'm guessing.

Ask her to return it for a full refund and sell it to someone else. Because im sure you may get what u are asking with the marks. if they are on the inside, does it really matter? It just depends on if it is a hassle to you

I didn't catch the marks before I listed the item. In fact, I wasn't the one that noticed them at all, lol. DH went through the bag once more before we packed it up in the box to ship to make sure I hadn't left anything in it that I didn't notice and that's when he saw them. I took pics and emailed the buyer that night about it. She asked if I thought the marks would come out -- I told her I wasn't sure, but gave the stain stick a go just to get an idea of what was going on. That's why I gave her the option of doing a return, since it was something I didn't notice until the last minute.

Just refund her the $10 (and why didn't you just keep going with the tide pen and clean up the marks when you found them ?) and be done with the deal. Easy :confused3.

^This!

Tell her you'd be more than happy to give her a full refund provided she sends the bag back to you. Do not refund the $ until you receive the bag.

I agree, go with this. She either wants the bag or doesn't.

ditto... my guess is she will drop it and not return the bag.

To save the hassle I'd tell her she can either do the return or you'll split the difference and send her $5. I assume you sold it for a reasonable amount, and to me it would be worth the $5 not to have to worry about it anymore.

That sounds like a good compromise. Good idea!

Just wondering how a bag with these marks in it could be listed as EUC? How much money was the sale for that $10.00 is causing a problem?

If it was me, I would have tried to get the stains off BEFORE sending it. Especially since you tried and they were coming off, you should have just finished it. I would tell her to send it back and you would give her a refund, you'll be out the shipping so it may be easier to give her $10 off. Really depends on what price it was sold for.

I don't necessarily think the wear marks on the bottom are actual dirt instead of just scuffs... but I don't know. This is a picture of the marks on the bottom of the bag that I explained to her & showed her:

You see those 2 dark dots in the bottom left corner? That's what this is all over. Had I known the red marks were there prior to getting it ready to ship, I would have washed it but she wanted it shipped the next day and the bag needs to be line dried so that would've taken a few days for it to fully dry out to the point where I was comfortable boxing it up. There's some memory foam in it & I wouldn't want it to grow any mold or anything.

But I've bought a number of these bags used before (they're expensive, used is the only way I can afford them! lol) and the condition I listed mine in was in line with what I've seen listed and bought... most of them say that they need a wash, so I guess I just figured what works for everyone else would work for me. Lesson learned for next time! :thumbsup2 (because holy cow, am I going to have a ton of baby stuff to get rid of after these 2 are born and start growing out of things :scared1:)

I sent her an email back and said that while I felt I was honest in this transaction and provided her with everything she needed to make an educated purchase that she could feel comfortable about, I was willing to go halfway and meet her at $5. It's the price that I would have sold the bag to if it were a friend or acquaintance that wanted it so in the interest of good karma, I felt that was fair. We'll see what happens.

That's a cute bag! I think you were kind to extend the $5 offer. Those little marks aren't that big a deal. If you want new, you buy new!

I think you did very well! I hope it all resolves soon and to your satisfaction and the buyer's. I hope that's the end of it for you.

Thanks! :goodvibes It's super cute and I loved, loved, loved it. But it's definitely not a bag big enough to hold stuff for two babies, lol. Thankfully, I have a bigger bag in the same exact pattern that I can use. :) I also picked up a new bag from the same maker in a different pattern, but a backpack. I figure with a 3yo and 2 newborns, it'll be beneficial to have both arms free & not have a bag always sliding down one arm.

Sorry, but that bag is no where near EUC. You've got permanent wear on the corner, dirt marks on the white of the fabric which may be actually stained, and whatever the red marks are you described. At the very least it could be GUC.

It's best to wash all bags and look in every pocket inside and out before listing it. Boogie wipes work great to help get marks out of JJB, also making a paste out of baking soda and dish soap, let sit then scrub.;)

Because that's a discontinued print, had you washed it and made it in great condition, you could have got a lot more $ for it!

I was going to say, maybe it's my eyes or that I'm reading the DIS on my ITouch but no, I don't see what you're talking about.

But after seeing kuhltiffany's response - yep, apparently it's my eyes ;)

Often times on ebay, if we notice something wrong prior to shipment, we'll notify the buyer and tell the the issue. Give them the option of cancelling the bid. Sometimes they'll ask for a 10-20% and still want the item. If they contact after receiving the item, we'll offer a partial refund in lue of a refund. Usually half of what they would get back if they shipped it back. Since return shipping is on the buyer's side. Say an item sells for $20 with $10 shipping, we'll offer a $5 refund. It usually works out for the best and they leave positive feedback.

Once you say that you'll give a refund, it's opening unwanted doors for them to change their mind. Or get it for cheaper than it's worth.

You must be seeing things that I can't see from the picture :confused3 It looks like EUC to me. Anything that has been used will have a few smudges maybe but I don,t see the wear. Also those will probably come out. Probably should have spot cleaned them before selling, but anyway, if you don,t like used, buy new - that's my policy, then you can expect excellent new ;) and also pay "new" prices!
