WWYD-school requested DS skip a grade

This sounds like a tough decision! As a former teacher and a mom, I want to point out that boys are already behind in maturity when they enter school. The fact that your son is younger than his classmates is already a concern for the future, so I would be hesitant to move him up to the next grade...

My MIL skipped a grade and regrets it to this day. She said that it made high school really hard because everyone else was more developed and mature than she was.

I totally see the other side and the concerns about your son being bored too!

Good luck with your decision.

I skipped as a kid - started college at 17.

I was happy and well adjusted through school. I played sports, dated, etc., and was a normal kid. I did only skip 1 grade - I went straight into 1st grade, but had a late birthday to start with (October). By todays standards, I would have skipped 2 grades. When I was in school, there was quite an age range because parents of kids with late birthdays held their kids back - so with me as the youngest, some kids in my class were a full 2 yrs older than me. It was not a big deal for me or for them. I was big for my age until about high school, and I think that helped.

I think the personality of the kid matters too - for me, I was always in a hurry. If I knew the answer, I was bored and would tune things out. My mom pretty much felt I would tune school out if there was nothing for me. That held true through college - I was done in less than 4 with a masters degree.

Overall, skipping a grade worked out very well for me.
