Writing down every penny spent

We love a Ford too!! DH has a 1985 Mustang, I bought a 2003 Mustang new, gave it to DS18 when he was turning 16, but DD17 a convertible 2003 Mustang when she was turning 16, sold the first 2003 Mustang and bought DS18 his dream Legend Lime convertible 2005 Mustang and had it shipped in from Indiana, then traded the conv 2003 Mustang when I special ordered DD17's 2008 Mustang! Man, that's a lot of Ponies!!!!

That is a lot of ponies. :rotfl2: We have had a few Fords. We had the smaller truck, an F150, and currently we have a diesel F350 that wasn't used once over the summer due to the price of diesel. :faint:

A few years ago DH and I both started getting a lunch allowance in cash each payday. Instead of saying I have to pack my lunch X number of days I get $40 for two weeks. If I want to eat cheap, I can eat out more, if I have a more expensive lunch, I have to bring my lunch more. This also helps because DH has cash, and I don't have to keep track of his debit card use. He dosn't use it!!!

Good Luck to everyone!

:thanks: That's a great idea.

My goal is to bring lunch every day this week. It's not only better for my wallet but it's better for my waistline. When I order out or eat in the cafeteria, my portions double.

Just bumping to see how everyone is doing with this. :goodvibes

Went to Walmart today and broke down the receipt. I have already spent $35 on bdays this year. The last time I did a budget I had $25 per month. :scared1: I still have 1 more January bday. It's been eye-opening.

I have noticed I'm holding on tighter, just seeing so quickly how much I spend so quickly....

This afternoon when I got home, I saw the light on in the fridge. Which is not good since you can only see that when the door is open. :scared1:

I accidentally left it open. Everything was warm. Do I even need to point out I went to the grocery store yesterday?? I just keep thinking, $104.97, $104.97....

 That stinks! I am so sorry. I have been there and it's so painful to throw all that food out. Is any of it salvageable?

I find I am holding a little tighter too because I don't want to document it. ;)

I wish I could do this! But DH eats out every day!! Some days his job pays and some he does! I stay at home so eat from home everyday. (unless my mom or dad takes me out for lunch) I buy our family dinner everynight but only know what DH spends when it goes through our bank. I ask him but he does not really remember what he spent! I envey those of you that can really count every penny!! I do my best tho and it has worked out!

Well, I woke up ok so I'm sure the milk is. I threw the meat out ( whole pack of chicken breasts, beef cubes, bacon, lunch meat, eggs...) just because I don't want to risk it. I really don't want to go to the grocery store again. :guilty:

:goodvibes Take an average, maybe double the amount you actually see. :confused3 My thing with DH is that he will pay for all of the food at the station and then I never see the cash. He just burns through it so for now the $25 per 48 hour shift is just going in the DH work food category.

:goodvibes Bummer. My guess is that some of it might be okay but I agree that it's not worth risking.

Nope. It just wasn't worth the risk with all that meat. Although it did just occur to me that it would be a quick weight loss......

I just started doing this is well. Sadly, most of my money goes to bills.

It costs me $50 every pay period just to park my car to go to work. :(

To Goldie: We're in the same boat! It costs $40 per month at my job.

To All: I'm late to the party, and this may sound really obvious, but I found the best way to not spend money was to not go into stores. It does help that I'm not a shopper by nature, and only go to the mall 2 - 3 times per year. I also have never been one to need "the latest thing", whatever it happened to be. When I was a SAHM we kept to a very strict budget and I made up a master Walmart list (at that time ours didn't sell groceries too) and only went once a month. I would take my list and go through each item and if we didn't have enough to last a month I would buy it; if we did, I didn't buy it. I would look at our family calendar to check if there were any occasions that I needed to get a gift or card for and add any to the list. Then I would go by myself - no kids - and get what we needed. And I didn't go again until the next month. Period. Saves money, time, sanity and all it took was a little planning, which I felt as a SAHM was my job. I even had "Domestic Engineer" listed as my occupation on our tax returns back then. :rotfl:

I NEVER go into convenience stores. When I buy gas, I pay at the pump. Keeps me from being tempted by gum, drinks, snacks.

I'm trying to find additional ways to save money so that I can increase our pitiful little savings account in case things continue to go south with the economy, and I'm not sure where I can cut. As far as writing everything I spend down, well, except for our routine monthly bills I haven't spent any money so far this month. We have the next step up from basic satellite programming, because we live in a rural area and it is the only entertainment we pay for. I only have a local landline (for reverse 911 and for when my son is home alone after school) and the lowest cell phone plan I can get and still have the family plan, and I get a discount on my cell phone plan through my employer. We use an aircard for internet, but that is paid by my employer so it's not an expense for us. I turn off lights constantly, keep our thermostat low in winter and high in summer, and we don't have any service contracts. We have a well so water is free and we don't have garbage service, so no costs there. I cook almost everything from scratch, so most of my groceries are just the basics. Just this morning my son asked if I would by fruit by the foot because it was "fun" and I told him to go find a stick to play with if he wanted fun, that junk is full of sugar and empty calories. I almost always only buy store brands or what's on sale, whichever is cheaper, and by sale I mean buying one of BOGOF so essentially it's half price. We use coupons but only on what we would buy anyway. We may go to the movies 2 - 3 times per year, and the rest of our entertainment does not cost money. I don't use my car unnecessarily and usually have at least 2 things to do if I drive, except going to/from work. We eat out about twice a month, and fast food is extremely rare. I drink tap water at work instead of buying a drink and never use the snack machines, and bring my lunch every day. And there's still more month left at the end of the money. I'm stumped.

 I read through your entire post and from what you said, I don't know where else you could cut either. It sounds like you're being responsible with the money you are getting in. Hopefully someone has some ideas for you!

I've been doing this for years. I don't have a fancy spreadsheet - I just use the back of flyers and junk mail. Every month I use a different color paper to perk things up, LOL.

My DH is salaried, so that helps. It has taken years to get him on board, but it did work. He gets a weekly amount to spend and when it's gone it's gone. No complaining either, cuz I get zero to spend every week, LOL. He has no debit cards or credit cards either, because he would just spend, so it's best to keep temptation out of sight. He did quit smoking in October, so now he has money left at the end of the week and has fun shopping with his "found" money.

This year we are really tightening our belts because we have a few WDW trips planned (including our official wedding), and this year we have two car payments instead of one, plus two pre-paid college funds - so there went all our "discretionary" spending!

Right now I am trying to find a plan for high speed internet/cell phone that is cheaper than the $80/m I pay for dial up, land line and cell phone. I may just switch to a Trac Phone. I don't really "need" a cell phone, esp. if I get off dial-up.

In Nov my dh and I started putting cash in an envelope on pay day and when the envelope was empty, that was it. It's been great. I put all the recipts in there too so we can see what we've been buying. We kind of let it slack around Christmas time and New Years with buying all the food for having family over, but we started it up again. Plus I just don't go to the store unless we need something. I plan meals ahead and do one big shopping on my dh's day off so I can leave my youngest at home. I make big batches of chili, spaghetti sauce and meatballs, stuffed cabbages or peppers, egg rolls etc. Not only does it save on money but it's a huge time saver at night for dinner. We don't have a set amount of money in the envelope, just whatever we have left on payday after bills are paid and that has to last us until the next pay.

:thumbsup2 Wow- you have got your stuff together! I don't know where you can cut because you seem to be on track! :goodvibes

pixiedust: Congrats on your upcoming wedding! I bet his not smoking is saving a ton of money!
