Well, we are about 1300 miles away and make the drive 3 times a year, sometimes pulling our fifth wheel and sometimes not. I can't say we like the Fort better than resort or vice versa, we love both equally. We think either way has great attributes. For example, we really prefer the Fort at Christmas time as we find it far more festive but in summer time the resorts are nice! We definitely prefer some of the resort pools far more than the Fort's pool. We just finished a 8k mile trip out west to the national parks and hotel'd it the entire way - sometimes it's just easier checking into a hotel and not having to worry about also hooking up the sewer pipe!!!
Staying at the cabins are very nice, we've done it a few times. You get the feel of the Fort and not have to tow down. We do kind of feel you get a little more of the "Disney Magic" at the resorts but the Fort is still "Magical!!!" As others have said I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you choose. As long as your in Disney you chose wisely!!
