Ink pen?

People around here call pens ink pens regardless of what kind they are referring to.

There are felt tip pens, ballpoint pens, BIC pens etc, but whenever anyone at works wants me to hand them a pen, they always say ink pens. (we have no other kind there.)

What do you say when you need a pen?

And where did we come up with the word pen anyway because the more I type it and say it the stranger it sounds! :p  ;)

It must be a southern thing, we call them ink pens too. It's kinda like ordering or asking for a coke. The other person will say "what flavor- sprite, coke, diet coke, dr pepper, pepsi, etc." Same thing with pens, you ask for a pen and we'll say "what kind-felt ballpoint, gel, etc."

My dd learned in 1st grade the proper way to pronounce pen. Southerners pronounce pin and pen the same way. She STILL corrects her 1st grade teacher if she hears her say pin for pen.;) Her former teacher thinks that is so cute.

And don't forget Browneyes, if we don't ask for a Coke, we may just ask for a "cold drink" (usually pronounced Coal Drank)

Speaking of redundancy, speaking of redundancy, my DW refers to roaches as roach bugs

Anyone else hear water hoses referred to as hose pipes?

Alabamaalan, never heard of hoses pipes before! That's a new one for me!

i just call them pens. :)

here is the etymology, if you are interested:

[Middle English penne, from Old French, from Late Latin penna, from Latin, feather. See pet- in Indo-European Roots.]
