Would You Avoid MGM on Star Wars Weekends?

I was wondering if you would avoid Disney Studios on a Star Wars weekend? We will be there during the first weekend. Although I am a fan of Star Wars, this is going to be a short trip for my son and I, and I am trying to get a feel for the crowds during this time.

Thanks

I wouldn't avoid MGM as a whole, although I wouldn't count on riding Star Tours!

If you want to take your son on things like TOT or Rockin' Roller Coaster -- or Playhouse Disney and Little Mermaid, depending on his age! :p -- those areas probably won't be that much more crowded than normal. It can be advantageous, though, to pick up a Star Wars Weekend schedule and plan to see the things you want to see during the times when there are Star Wars events scheduled. That way, all the SWW fans will be at their events, and the rest of the park will move a bit more freely.

I went a couple of years ago and had no problems at all with the crowds. I agree that it is congested around the Star Tours ride, and there were storm troopers walking around, but it was actually fun. We rode everything that we wanted with no trouble. There were even storm troopers on top of the entrance building! Go and have a great time!

we were in MGM last May during Star Wars Weekend. It also happened to be Memorial Day weekend.

It was the hottest, most crowded experience of my life. We hardly got to see anything of the Studios. The waits were very long...just walking down the boulevards was difficult and forget the food lines.:crowded:

No!!! I wouldn't avoid MGM.

I am not a Star Wars fan and I too wanted to avoid this park (crowds and no desire to see anything remotely related to Star Wars). However, my son wanted to go so I agreed. This turned out to be one of the memorable visits to MGM. My youngest got to be a Jeddi in Training, we took pictures with lots of Star War characters, and the parks were not that crowded! My two older children even got to ride Star Tours two times while we waited for my daughter to be chosen as a Jeddi.

I would be prepared for a lot of Star War fanatics. You will know who they are when you encounter them.;) However, the park when we visited was definitely manageable and fun.:)

As a fan, you may enjoy the WWTBAM Star Wars editions. They are 100% SW trivia and a lot of fun. Those were at full capacity so a Fast Pass is best for that.

Really, the lines are around the autographs for the celebrities and inside and around Tatooine Traders. Not sure on what day you were planning to go to MGM, but the weekends start on Fridays and the crowd was not as bad as it was on Saturday, which was also an EE day. That had had two rather large crowds: one set running towards Star Tours, the other towards TOT and RNRC. The Star Wars events ended around 7 PM so they don't actually go all day long.

Another plus is the early morning parade. They have the celebrities and all Star Wars characters in it. It is short, but is still a really nice addition.

Good information. I'm glad you posted this thread because I was wondering the same thing. Can you direct me to where I can find the dates for these weekends? Thanks!

We were in MGM for Star Wars Weekends on Saturday, June 8, 2003. We were there specifically for the Star Wars stuff, but I would definitely say that there is no reason to skip on those days because it is going on. As others have said, it really is only busy around Star Tours, but we had no problem getting on rides all day (did not do ToT or RNRC), including walking on to Star Tours itself 3 times!

The weekends run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from May 14th through June 13th. They have not yet released a list of celebrities that will be attending, but that should not affect park attendance too much.

Because I've never been to SWW and enjoy Star Wars, I'd go. But if you want a regular day at MGM and don't particularly carethen you can avoid it.
