Would this bother you?

I work part time in an office as and office assistant with one other person who is the full time office assistant. We both work for the same group of people, but obviously since she is full time she has more responsibilities and works more with the manager and assistant manager.

Every month or two the assistant manager brings the full timer lunch, but not me. I am there until 2:00 everyday, so I'm there for lunch.

I guess this bothers me some, but I also understand. Just curious if this would bother others or am I just being too sensitive. :)

Are both of you sitting there together? If so, I think it's rude for the manager to bring lunch to only the full timer. Now, IMO he owes NEITHER of you an occasional lunch, but if he doesn't want you to have one, he shouldn't buy for the full timer either.

Is he actually buying the lunch for the other admin or is he just picking it up for her? I mean do they have some sort of agreement that she gives him money and he picks up both lunches?

This is what I was thinking. I sometimes with message coworkers I know have similar tastes and ask if they want me to pick something up. I don't email the entire department.

Also since you are there until 2 do you get a lunch break or is it just that you are there over lunch?

The assistant manager is a she, and yes she is buying it for the full timer. Not being paid back. We both sit right next to each other in the front office area.

Do you get a lunch break?
Does the other office manager?
Are these lunches "thank you's" for working through lunch breaks?

Is it rude? Maybe.
Would it bother me? Maybe a little, but not enough to make a deal about it.

I tend to "wear my heart on my sleeve" and my feelings get hurt easily. I know it's a fault, and I try to over look a lot of things that might bother me but in your situation I'm sure it would bother me. Just because you are a part-time employee doesn't make you less deserving of an occasional lunch from the assistant manager, especially since you sit right next to each other. It would hurt my feelings too, but I wouldn't say anything to them about it.

Is there any possibility that the full time assistant is doing something above and beyond her duties for the assistant manager? Perhaps this is the assistant manager's way of saying, "Thanks for picking up my dry cleaning."?

I think it would hurt my feelings, but I would never say anything about it.

Thanks everybody, I think I was just trying to validate my feelings.

I would never say anything. My coworker does do more than me and I'm sure it's just a way of saying thank you for your hard work. Plus I like her and would never want to deny any little extra perks she might get.

As you all have said, certainly not worth saying anything about.

FYI...I get a 15 minutes break, but no lunch. I usually just eat at my desk. My coworker always takes her lunch, as she should, so it's not a thank you for working through lunch just mostly a thank you for doing a good job.

On the plus side, I do have lots of time to Dis and sit and stew on things all day.

Sure it's hurtful. Unfortunately it's also one of those suck it up, Buttercup, moments in life.

This is pretty blunt, but I agree. For whatever reason, the assistant manager wants to show appreciation to the full-time assistant. I would chalk it up to their relationship and not dwell on it. Personally, I wouldn't let it hurt my feelings, especially if the assistant manager is paying out of his/her own pocket.

Ahh. Ok. If you're only getting a 15 and no lunch it means you're not there long enough to get a lunch break and your boss knows that. In that case I'd be less upset.

Treating workers differently in the same office probably in a public manner probably isn't a good idea.

My wife's company orders a cake for workers who hit an anniversary with the company beginning with their 25 year anniversary, and every 5 years after that. My wife is still waiting for her 25th, 30th and 35th Anniversary cake.....and yes, she is the ONLY employee they didn't order a cake for, and yes she is steamed.

If your colleague is entitled to a lunch break and you are not, why would you be upset ? She is being given a lunch to eat on her lunch break by someone she works more closely with than you. Now, if you were also working a lot with this manager, and were also entitled to a lunch break, you might have a reason to be miffed.
