Would a bank allow this?

I was thinking about opening another checking account for just me and my 14-year-old daughter. I would put her allowance each week in it and her money for her good grades in it. Would they allow me to put her name on the account with mine and let me get her a debit card to only use with my permission?

I have had my own account at a bank since I can remember, my mom is on it as well. I was able to open a checking account and get a debit card too

Hard to say for sure, but I've never heard of any student-type account for an under-18 child that allowed a debit card.

For years my kids had UGTM accounts which had their name and SS# attached for tax purposes, as the money was in fact theirs. The kids were free to make deposits but I, as custodian of the account, had to make the withdrawals.

Now my son has what's called a "Student Saver's" account which is only in his name, but he doesn't have a debit card attached to it.

I believe to have a checking account, even joint/custodial, you must be 18. I was 17 when I got mine but just before my 18th bday. Of course this was back in the stone age when I used a tablet and chisel to write on a check.

My ING account has a savings acct for ds14 and I jointly and it's easy to transfer $ from my checking to that savings acct. It's not as easy to w/d. Well, it's easy to do online, but it takes time, approx 3 business days.

I guess it can't hurt to ask though.

I am not sure about banks, but I know for sure our credit union offers them to kids in their student account program which starts at age 14. They do require a parent to be on the account as well.

I work in a bank... You have to be 15 to open a student checking and savings account, your parent has to be on it with you.

At 14 you can open a custodial savings for her, when she turns 15 you can then open the student package and go from there.

PM me for more information about the bank I work for or any other banking questions.

Of course you can open a joint account with your daughter. I don't see how you can control her use of a debit card though, unless you don't give her the password. Or change the password each time you let her use it.

Or you can just get an ATM card, which is different from a debit card. She would only be able to use this in an ATM machine, not to make debit purchases, such as buying things at a store or online.

Bank of America is 16 for checking accounts.

Word of caution, however...no matter how responsible a child is, ultimately, you will be held liable for any overdrafts, etc. If you open an account at the same bank that you have your checking/savings/etc, the bank can debit YOUR account if your child's (that you are a signer on) is overdrawn.

It will probably depend on your bank--it doesn't hurt to ask them! My bank let me open a checking account with my mother's name on it when I was 17. However, they would not give me a debit card until I turned 18 (they did let me request it two days early since my birthday was a Sunday and we left for vacation the following day.)

My kids (11 and 12) have bank accounts with debit cards. They have a $50 per purchase limit when using the debit card and $20 if they are getting cash. They cannot overdraft. The accounts are linked to my accounts and I transfer their allowances in (and transfer money out if they owe me for anything.

Wells Fargo.

Banks and Credit unions all have their own rules on this. My son has had a savings account at our credit union since he was like 2. When he is 13 he can get a checking account with a debit card that has a very strict limit.

Ooh we have just gotten one of those. I will check it out.

We have our son on our account. He is 18 but we added him on when he was 16 and started driving. He has his own debit card. This would not be the best choice for many teens but we have the kind of kid that does not break the rules and we trust him with the card. It's great as he is a senior in HS does not have a job yet. Rather than giving him cash for haircuts, gas, whatever needs he has, he just uses his debit card. He ask before he uses it for "fun" money. He has had a savings account( me as co-signer) since he was born.

If your bank won't let you do it, you could always open an account and link it to a paypal student card. Just another option to look in to. :goodvibes

Yep, was just coming to post this.
You can set the limits and withdrawal amounts.

Look under "Teen Checking account" and then there is a pull down list for specifics in your state.

We do it at ours. If they are under 18 a parent or person of legal age must be on the account with them. (I think that may be a WI law).

Our credit union has one . Here's what I found. I might do it when dd12 turns 13. If anyone has a teen account from Arrowhead crediti union let me know if you can transfer from parent checking account to childs account. Thanks

We use USBank. But, if you go to the Visa Buxx web site, you'll see other banks/institutions listed there as well. I set this account up for my daughter several years ago, when she needed to have access to $$ while on a summer marching band trip. Works slick. You pre-load it. They get a card with their name on it that is like a credit/debit card, and can be used at ATMs to get cash (tho there is a charge for that). She was able to use it at stores and fast food restaurants without difficulty. The account is online, and you, as the adult, will set up your own password (and the kid does their own password, as well, after their card arrives in the mail). I was able to log on, see where she spent the $, as often as I cared to. And, replenish the amount, when funds were getting low. There is plenty of info about visa buxx on the site. They are only allowed to use the dollar amount that exists in the account. And, the kid CAN call in to get a balance update, if needed (ie, not near their computer). This worked so slick for her trip, that I ended up using it to pay her allowance--I have it set up automatically. And, you, as the adult, can go in and 'suspend' the account, if you feel the need. It worked so well for her, that I ended up setting up accounts for my college boys as well--the visa buxx made it easy for me to put money in their hands with the click of my computer key, when unexpected expenses came up. When my sons were in their teens, I did set up checking accounts for them. I had to be listed for the account, as well. This is far more convenient. You just have to get her to agree to some kind of accounting system to log her purchases against her balance, so she learns to budget. Good luck.

I did this. Or they did......I was there. It is so easy to give allowance (or take away for infractions) I can say pick up X at the store on the way home-and just put that amount in their account.
