worth joining AAA for resort discount?

Are the AAA discounts about the same $ amounts as the AP discounts on room only resv??

No they aren't. Look at the following from mousesavers.com

During Value Season you can get up to 15% off at the Disney Deluxe and Disney Vacation Club resorts, or 20% off at the Value and Moderate resorts and the Ft. Wilderness campsites.
During Regular Season you can usually get up to 10% off at the Disney Deluxe and Disney Vacation Club resorts, or 15% off at the Value and Moderate resorts and the Ft. Wilderness campsites.
During Peak Season and Summer Season you can usually get up to 10% off at the Disney Deluxe and Disney Vacation Club resorts, or 15% off at the Value and Moderate resorts.
The only time AAA/CAA discounts don't usually apply is Holiday Season (around Christmas) at the Value and Moderate resorts.

Travel dates: 2/15/07-3/30/07. Discounts are $40 off per night at Value resorts, $61 off per night at Moderate resorts and $131 off per night at Deluxe and DVC resorts. Book by 3/30/07. Use code FCQ.

The aaa discounts are for the year and the ap discounts are typical (not necessarily the same but similar) for what is often offered in those seasons. Don't forget to factor in cost of your ap or aaa membership when comparing.

Delux
you can see that In march the ap discount is 131 per night off at a delux. But with aaa the discount is 10% while the prices may vary greatly, to get even close to 131 for the night your room rate would have to be over 1000 per night...ap will be way way better. Even at the lower ap savings in value season of 80 which coincides with the higher aaa savings of 15% they still arent very close as your hotel would have to exceed 533 per night to give a savings of 80..with a $300 a night room the savings would only be $45.

As you downgrade hotels the numbers will get closer so there isn't such a hugh difference....
