Working moms - what do you do?

I'm a full-time teacher who thought about subbing while I waited for a position to open. In the district where I work, subs are paid poorly (flat $100 a day). They do not get to use a teacher's prep period/s, and like teachers, do not get bathroom breaks and are only allowed 22 minutes for lunch. I would think you'd be able to find something better.

I am currently subbing as an Instructional Aide. I only get paid $8 an hour but get to say no on days I do not want to work. Have off when my DD does..even delayed openings and snow days.

I currently do all elementary schools in my district but am hoping for full time next year school at DD's school (2current aides are retiring and I already talked to the principle, who does the hiring).

I hold a BS in computer science and while worked in a school district IT department, never in a classroom before this year. No need to take credits, etc.

I was a sub at my DD's school, until I was offered a contract in November :cheer2: I work everyday, it is very part time but it's something. We have to have our fingerprint's run and FBI background check, it costs $50 before you have the job and you must do every year. I am hoping to find something in the evenings, as I don't want to give my school job up. I love working there!!

I'm the Director of Development for a large non-profit in our area. It is an upper management position (I answer directly to the CEO), and I plan special events, run our annual campaign, and oversee our endowment.

I am salaried and my job is very flexible in that I can plan my days, but there is always stuff that has to be done. I am working like 60 - 70 hours this week because of the things I have going on (several large grants to submit, an annual gala next weekend), but after next week I will have some breathing room and take a few days off (and leave before 6 PM!).

My children are used to going, going, going, so they are ok with it, but it was an adjustment when I went back to work after several years home with them.

I'm Jelouse of all you that work in the school system. That was what I originaly went to college for. I drive a pallet jack in a factory. Not the best job but I contribute about half the pay for the family. We own a house, two vehicles and go on a big two week vacation every year so I guess it's a good enough job.

I also work as a Development Director for a non-profit. I work 3 days per week and it is very flexible. I work, usually 9:30-4:30. My previous part-time jobs were with colleges, usually grant and program management. All are very flexible and pay well. Try looking at your local community college. They usually have lots of part-time work.

I don't have kids yet...we're working on it, but I had to comment about all the posts about sub requirements. We only need fingerprints and a background check in our district. No education requirement and we still do not have enough subs! Our district only pays $65/day. In fact the paras do not even need any education beyond high school. If you have 60 credits or an associates you get $.50 more an hour, but that's it!

I am in transportation. Call me crazy but I like working the early shift (5am). The hardest thing is getting up in the morning but once I'm awake I'm good to go. I leave my DS clothes ready the night before and DH takes him to my sisters house a 7am and she takes him to school. The good thing about starting so early is that I am off work by 1pm and I get to pick up my son from school. I get to pick my shift and days off once every six months so the early shift might no always be available but it generally is. Sometimes I work on my day off for extra money but when I do that I like working to midnight shift because my son is sleeping and he doesn't notice that I'm gone.

I work as an analyst in a manufacturing facility. The pay is good but the hours can be very long (couple 12+ hour days last week) :guilty: However, I have great family support (best grandparents in the world :goodvibes ) that make this possible. My son is also used to the long hours as I went back for my MBA a couple years back.

Having a career and a family is definitely possible :thumbsup2

I'm jealous of all the subs -that was my original plan for when DS started school. We moved shortly before he started K & NE wants subs to have a valid teaching cert! Or you are maxed out at 40 days a year. I don't know how they do it. I have a psych degree but no teaching cert.

When I did PT stuff, I worked at a preschool & loved it. Same schedule as the schools. I've also done data entry at home for a local co. -awful, traveling computer teacher -fun but unreliable pay - and before/after school childcare - pretty good gig. A year ago I went back FT to an office & hate it. I love my co-workers and the work is ok but juggling the kids & school schedules, illnesses, getting up early & putting a good chunk of my pay towards childcare just stinks. I'm looking at returning to school right now.

Good luck!! I know it's not easy juggling kids & schools. DD's high school has several days a year with late openings or early dismissals on testing days. Twice this week she doesn't start til 9:30. If you can't sub right away, can you sub as a para? Or offer to sub for a few childcare centers?

Another teacher here. Actually I'm a band director, so I put in a lot of hours outside the school day with band rehearsals and such.

I'm a customer service rep for a large woodpulp supplier. I work 7 to 4. There's nothing around here that pays very much other than where I work so it's a great job!!!

Its frustrating because our middle school NEEDS subs extremely bad.....who that is bad grammar....LOL!

I plan to meet with the principal this week to see if she can pull any strings. Central office said that talking to the principal does not have any effect, but I think I'm going let her know about my application.
She loves my youngest DD, and has 2 kids currently in her school and one coming up next year. I think it won't hurt anything to sit down with her. I also know a lot of the teachers because having 5 children in the system you end up meeting a lot of people. The teachers, at both middle and elementary schools have shown great interest and some mentioned to let them know as soon as I am through with the hiring process so they can put me on their sub list.

It's nice to have an "in" with someone, but if there are qualifications, then that's the way it is! Honestly, please get some training before heading into a classroom. It is much harder than it looks and you will need to know every technique, teaching strategy and discipline idea that you can learn. I know you are taking the classes and I'm sure because you know some teachers and the principal that they will put you on their list as soon as you're finished. Never underestimate training for stepping into a classroom. Good Luck!

I'm a para in our school. Pay is not great, but I can walk to work, with the kids, days off are perfect, ect.

I also know what's happening in their world, which I enjoy.

I am a national account marketing and event manager for the larget trade book pubisher in the world. i have worked in publishing for the last 9 years. i work 8-4 M, T, TR and Fr. ON W i work 9-3. I get all of the major holidays off and get 4 weeks vacation. our company and most publishers, are closed between christmas and new years and hat doesn't count towards my 4 weeks vacation.

i lov my job because i live and breath books. it can be trying but DH works 10-5 and drops off.

I'm a Juvenile Probation Officer Monday-Friday and work at a resturant as a cashier on weekends for my Disney money.

I have worked nights for the last 21 years, 40 - 50 hours/week for the Government. I started pretty young, and when I turn 50 this year I will have 30 years in. Can retire at 55. Only trouble is DS is only 12. What was I thinking??? LOL

As I am filling out applications and doing a resume I was wondering what type of jobs y'all have.

My first app is to get into the school system to sub. I have poor timing because they school board just passed a motion that subs must complete a 30hr course at the local community college. The class was full and I have to wait until spring before taking it.
In the mean time I have been searching for jobs on line. I have found some jobs that are service oriented, like stocking items for Kelloggs, magaizines, etc.

Right now I need to work part time during school hours. Having the five kids at three different schools doesn't allow me to work outside of school hours.

So, if you can be so kind to share the job or field you are working in....

Thanks in advance.

One thought, coould you work as a TSS in the school system. Pay more then stockinig shelves and in the schooling area.

Second, are there Internet colleges that offfer the certification online?

When I worked on my BA I was able to complete many classes online.Other then the program you are leaning to.

Is TSS an aide? I have not heard that term.

In some districts, this 30 hours course is a "training" course that ultimately gives you the sub cert. My local community college offers it, but you don't NEED it however it is strongly suggested and or required.

Since I was an education major, I was told that I didn't NEED it. However, most non education majors are really pushed to take it.

The course covers classroom management, proper professional behavior, how to work with all different levels of children, etc. They also go over the application process. At the end of the course you can apply for your county sub cert. In some districts that is more difficult because you need to write an essay on your philosophy of education, how you differentiate instruction and types of skills you add to the classroom.

If you aren't an education major, and get to the philsophy of ed and differentiation essay part of the sub application, you may not know what you need to do.

I've been a part time Admin Asst for our church for almost 9 years now. I work 15 hours per week and I do it mostly from home. My hours are entirely flexible and I only go into the office one or two times a month. It's been a great job while raising the kids.
