we had a gas fireplace with our last house, but this one is woodburning. I grew up with woodburning but dad never let us have anything to do with it...he took care of it. We had the chimney cleaned today, have wood outside ready to burn. So what next???

LOL! I feel so clueless!

If you have a gas connection, you can just turn the gas on after the place the wood in the fireplace and strike a match...make sure you only turn the gas on a little or you'll blow up!

If you don't have a gas connection, you must use a starter which can be anything from newspaper or kindling to get it started and then add the wood. I'm not an expert, but can keep a fire going.

Good luck!!!!

Since you've had it cleaned, I assume the sweep told you if it is in good repair; no visible cracks in the flue, damper working, you have a grate top keep the wood off the floor, and let the ash fall away, a set of tools, a spark screen, etc.
That said, you'll need some kindling, and maybe a little newspaper to get it started. Too much paper is bad. Put the knidling in, try to lean them against each other so there is some air space around the wood. Put the paper into amongst the kindling, open the damper, and light the paper. Use a long fireplace match, or a long reach lighter. You may need to use a bellows to get the paper hot enough to light the kindling. you shouldn't try to blow on the fire, you may get a faceful of hot ash. You need to get a decent fire going with the kindling to get a flow of air up the chimny, this will keep the smoke from getting into your house. Put some small logs into the kindling, leaning them in to keep some air space, but letting the fire from the kindling run onto them. Try to get some bark into the flames, that will help get the log going faster. Let the smaller logs catch, and burn for a short while, then you can add larger logs.

Good luck, and rember, safety first. Always keep a fire extinguisher in you home.

If you don't have a gas starter, Yankee Candle sells firestarter candles. I have used them and they work pretty good for the starting of a fire.

I take the easy way out and buy the firestarters. They aren't very expensive and they start the wood burning quickly. You should use a grate to hold the wood up off the bottom of the fireplace and it will burn better.

I love wood burning fireplaces, we have two.

thanks everyone! 2 more questions...do I clean out the ash after every use, and I want the flue open when we have fires, right? (yes that sounds dumb, I know it does, just double-checking)

YES, the flue needs to always be open while there is any fire or smoldering ashes. You do not have to clean out the ashes every time. As long as there is space for air to reach the wood under and around it, you will be ok. We usually clean out the ashes about every 4th or 5th fire, depending on how much wood is burned.

thank you! I know a lot of this is obvious, but its fire after all and I want to make very sure on everything :)
