Wonder 7/31-8/03 incl Hyatt UPDATE & COMPLETE 9/11

DAY 2 -AUGUST 1ST

Today was Nassau day, but we had no plans to get off the ship. The Atlantis Beach Day and the dolphin excursion both looked neat - but probably really wouldn't work for us until the girls are a bit older (and taller in the case of Atlantis). Neither DH or I are shoppers. So, we decided just to relax and enjoy the ship. I had a pedicure scheduled, the girls wanted to hit the Mickey Pool and DH & I had Palo booked for the evening.

Anyway, the day arrived EARLY in our little stateroom. DD6 had us all up by 6:15am or so. We were all well rested though, so nobody complained (much) about the early wake up. We had no trouble at all being amongst the first to enter the line for Beach Blanket Buffet when it opened at 7:30am. The girls LOVED this buffet ... the Mickey waffles were gross though ... reminded me of cake donuts, not waffles.

After breakfast, DH took the girls to the Mickey Pool while I headed up to the spa.

I don't remember what time my pedicure appointment was for, but I want to say it was around 9:00am. I had booked the appointment onboard the day we arrived (I went to the spa as soon as we boarded and booked in person before joining DH and the girls for lunch). Well, wouldn't you know it - they had double booked me. :confused3 They ended up hauling me off to the suana area to let me wait for a solid 45 minutes (I believe it is called the Rainforest Room???). I hate saunas. I really, really hate them. I just don't like roasting (or steaming?) and getting all drippy - plus, I have curly hair that doesn't react well to excessive humidity. :rotfl: So, I sat in one of those heated stone chairs. The chair, while heated, was made out of stone. Stone is hard. And, also, these chairs are curved ... I'm on the short side, so a curved chair doesn't necessarily curve in the right spot for my stature. Still, I managed to fall asleep while waiting for my pedicure - so I guess it wasn't that bad. :rotfl:

Anyway, my pedicure specialist arrived and whisked me away for my pedicure. It was nice and I didn't get the hard sell for any products. I had the pedicure, tipped and left.

After my feet were done, I went to find the family at the Mickey Pool. The girls were having a great time and DH had a nice lounge chair. He informed me that the girls had spent a LONG time going up and down the slide. The grandpa from our dining table was there with his grandaughter ... DD6 and the grandaughter were playing together in the pool. DD4 had found a boy who was leading her around by the hand - in and out of the Mickey Ear. Both girls looked like they were having fun.

Around 11:00am, we got the girls out of the pool and secured some lunch for them from Goofy's (DH and I were planning to eat lunch at Triton's). We sat at a covered table in the Mickey Pool area. The food was fine and the girls seemed to enjoy it - particularly the ice cream. (We actually ate food from Goofy's quite a few times - you can get fresh fruit, milk, sandwiches - much lighter fare than pizza, fries, burgers, etc. Except, we did get a box of cereal for DD to munch on one morning and it was STALE - blech!).

After lunch, we took the girls back to their rooms and got them changed out of their swimsuits. Both girls were going to the Kid's Clubs - DD4 was going to go Heffalump Hunting and DD6 was going to Ratitouille cooking school.

DH and I dropped the kids off at their clubs and headed to Triton's for a sit down lunch. I am terrible, but I don't remember what we had. I had some sort of pumpkin soup (loved it) followed by risotto (didn't care for it) and dessert (don't remember what the dessert was at all:confused3 ). I have no idea what DH ate - NONE. I will say, however, that service was EXCELLENT at Triton's for lunch ... the place was pretty empty though. It was nice to eat lunch with just DH and I - kind of like a date!

After lunch, we were heading to the kids club when our pager went off. Turns out DD4 thought something scary was going to happen, so she wanted us (I don't remember the activity ... I think it was a captain hook thing and she was scared) ... when she realized it wasn't scary, she didn't want to leave the club. DD6 did, however, want to leave. She said cooking school was just "Okay" ... turns out, she thought she was going to the Mickey Pool if she left the kids club.

Anyway, we wandered around the ship a bit with DD6 and then headed back to the stateroom. DD6 was wiped out, so we let her watch old Disney cartoons and color while DH and I read on the verandah. After a bit, DH went and collected DD4 from the Oceaneer Club and we ordered a room service dinner for the girls (we had Palo). We let them get burgers, fries, fruit salad and those big chocolate chip cookies I've read so much about. Okay ... I didn't like the chocolate chip cookies. Yes, they were BIG, but not very tasty. I didn't see what all the fuss was about - they were kind of dry and bland. Maybe we got a bad batch?

After room service, we took the girls back to their respective club and lab areas. I think DD4 was going to make some moo juice and do si do with Snow White. I believe DD6 had Goofy Files and some free time.

DH and I were headed to Palo for dinner. I think our reservation was for 6:00pm or so. We ended up being one of the first few people in the dining room. We were seated at a table by the window and got to watch Nassau pass on by as the ship left port. It was pretty neat. Dinner was GREAT! Again, I am pretty bad about remembering the details - you will never see a food TR from me, that is for sure! I do know that DH and I just followed the recommendation of our waiter for apetizer/salad. I had the filet for dinner and it was EXCELLENT - it truly felt like it was melting in my mouth. I had the chocolate thing for dessert. I believe DH had a seafood something or other for dinner ... it was recommended by the waiter and DH said it was great. We really enjoyed ourselves and the service was awesome (waaay better than the evening prior). We will definately eat at Palo again.

After dinner, we waddled down to our stateroom to change back into our casual clothes. Our stateroom host was cleaning the bathroom (I didn't know they cleaned it TWICE in one day!!! TWICE!!) and preparing our room for bedtime, but he graciously stepped out for the 3 minutes it took us to change.

The plan was for DH to collect DD6 and take her up to bed, while I collected DD4. I was to take DD4 on a little stroll while DD6 fell asleep. So, off we went to the kids' clubs. The girls seemed happy to see us, DD6 was very obviously tired. DD4 was sitting in a clam shell watching TV (she loved that clam shell seat). I kissed DD6 goodnight and headed off with DD4.

Up next ... the new show, a pirate party and some forbidden fruit.

Great update! I'm sorry your servers were so lousy. I hope things improved the next night!

Can't wait for more!

Thanks for reading! Service was great on night #2 ... we ate at Palo!:rotfl:

I'm really enjoying your trip report. I hope your meals got better. Can't wait for more.

Sadly, service DID NOT improve at the regular dining rotation. Palo rocked though!

Yes! We had a blast! Didn't wanna leave though :( I got severely burnt at Castaway Cay, but thats my own fault!! Sorry to hear your dinner experience was a downer. We have another cruise booked for 12/2009 and are taking along my parents. Keep in touch!

Lisa

I'm glad you had such a good time! Did you re-book on board? I saw a few "crispy" people at Castaway Cay. I kept coating my girls in sunscreen and they still got massive tan lines that day ... I was amazed at how dark they got with that much sunscreen. Just proves how powerful the sun is down there!

I'm really enjoying reading your report and looking forward to the next installment! Makes me excited for our Wonder cruise in 5 weeks time! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Glad you are enjoying the report. I really enjoyed reading reports prior to my trip.

We were also on the 8/31 Wonder sailing. I am glad to hear that we were not the only table with late servings. Our dinner time was 5:45 and the rotation was PTTA. Most of the time, the children at our table received and finished their meals before we even received ours.

My DH and I remember that last year, everyone received their meals at the same time.

Wow. I'm actually sorry to hear that we WEREN'T the only ones with crummy service. Makes me a little worried about our future plans. Maybe we had the same service team??? I remember telling my DH to "tip big" b/c these poor boys are going to be out of work in a few days ... service was that bad.

DAY 2, AUGUST 1st, Part 2 ...

After picking up the girls, DH and DD6 headed back to the stateroom while I wondered with DD4.

We headed down to deck 4 and found the gift shops. DD4 wandered around the gift shop a bit and decided that she really, really wanted some scrap book letter stickers for her souvenier. I had to laugh ... she picked the exact same thing at VWL when we were there for Spring Break (the girl LOVES stickers). I told her we would come back the next day to buy them (I had warned the girls that there would be no souvenier buying until the last day and told them they could pick out one thing. This is pretty standard for us - 1 trinket per trip).

After the gift shop browsing, I decided that we could catch the 8:15 showing of Toy Story: The Musical. We found seats near the middle in the very back row of the lower section. I was a bit hesitant after our Golden Mickey mishap, but decided to give it another shot. I really wanted to see the play. Oddly enough, DD4 was fine with the show. I don't want to give too much away, but the show can be pretty dark and creepy (that neighbor kid and his creepy toys) ... but DD4 was fine. Go figure ... Snow White scares the beeswax out of her, but a creepy mean kid with a skull and cross bones shirt is fine.:confused3 As for me, I thought the show was okay. It got a little long in parts and that neighbor kid bugged me.

After the show, we decided to head up to deck 9 to get DD4 some bedtime milk and DH some bedtime diet Sprite. This was pirate night and the party was starting at 9:45. It was probably around 9:15pm or so by this time. DD4 was hoping to catch Hannah Montana on the big screen again, but all we saw were Pirate Party Preparations. They were working hard to set up all the buffets. At this point, DD4 is starving and begging for some food. The other food places are closed, but DD4 is really, really hungry. Finally, I snag a castmember and ask if he could please, please swipe an apple from the nice roped off buffet display. Thankfully, he obliges and hands me two apples. Apples in tow, we head down to our stateroom.

Back in the room, DD6 was snoozing away in the curtained off "kids room" (Why don't the Disney resort rooms have a curtained off area!!! That was so nice!) and DH was reading peacefully. DD4 drank her milk and ate about 1/4th of her apple while we read her a bedtime story. Then, she was off to bed with strict orders to be quiet and not bug her sister.

DH and I both snuggled under the covers (our room was freezing this entire trip ... I never did figure out how to warm it up, but seariousl, the room was cold!) and read for a bit before we drifted off to sleep.

Up next ... Castaway Cay!

DAY 3, AUGUST 2, 2008 CASTAWAY CAY

I have to say that this is the day that I have been most looking forward to ... in fact, our original idea for a summer 2008 cruise was for one of those fabulous double dip cruises. But, we messed around too long and the dates that would work for us were completely booked ... so we ended up with a 3 night cruise.

Anyway, the morning of Castaway Cay, DD6 woke us up bright and early. After I got up and threw on some clothes, DD6 and I went for a little walk. We wandered around Deck 9 looking at Castaway Cay and enjoying the beautiful morning. It was pretty deserted, but we did see a handful of early risers sipping coffee and looking out at the sights.

DD6 and I grabbed a diet coke for DH, then picked up some fresh fruit and a couple boxes of cereal at Goofy's Galley. When we got back to the room, DH was up, but DD4 was still snoozing a bit. DD6 munched on the fruit while DH sat on the Verandah sipping his first diet coke of the day. We woke DD4 up and got her dressed, then headed to Beach Blanket Buffet for breakfast.

BBB was much more crowded this morning ... not exactly crowded, I guess, just more people than yesterday. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast (Breakfast #2 for DD6 ... we like to joke that she is a Hobbit ... she usually has 2 breakfasts), then headed back to our room to get our beach stuff.

Back at the room, we stood on the verandah and applied our first coat of Bullfrog spray on sunscreen. I love this stuff. We are pretty fair group, so we love our sunscreen. I've read lots of reports of the spray on stuff not working well ... but that hasn't been our experience this summer. I just don't think people apply the spray sunscreen as liberally as they should b/c it is kind of expensive (we use an entire bottle for one application on the four of us if that tells you how much we apply). Anyway, after sunscreen application, we collected our beach gear and headed down.

There was a very short line to leave the ship, and we were off in no time. Right away, we saw the stand selling water with coolers, so we bought some. Next, we headed towards the tram station. It was a hot, hot day. The girls and I were roasting in our cover ups waiting for that tram. Eventually, the tram came and we took a quick trip to the family beach (not without stopping to buy a bag of beach toys first ... I'd read that you can borrow them for free from the Kids Clubs, but I didn't bother trying).

Once at the beach, we staked out a spot with a few loungers under an umbrella. The place was near the giant play structure in the water. A hammock might have been nice, but we really aren't lounge in the sun types. Honestly, with both kids in the water, I find it hard to lounge ... I like to keep my eyes on the children and I can't really watch like a hawk from a hammock.

Right away, DD4 got busy digging and playing with the sand toys. DD6 joined her for a bit, but she wanted to go to the treasure hunt at the kids club. It started at 10:00am, so DH walked her over around 9:45am or so. DD4 didn't want to go to any kids club activities today, so she stayed back at the beach with me.

When DH got back from dropping DD6 off, he headed over and rented a float. I was so excited! I love those things! Turns out DD4 loves them too. We spent a lot of time floating on that thing ... DD4 would lay down lengthwise and I would just kind of put my uppper body on half of it and kick us around a bit. So relaxing. The weather was great that day ... I want to say that it was high 80's, or possibly low 90's. Perfect for the beach.

DD6 returned from her treasure hunt with a "gold" Oceaneer Club coin ... she had a good time, but wanted to spend the rest of the day on the beach. So, we basically just dug in the sand, floated a bit and found billions of those tiny white seashells.

We headed over to the barbecue right around the time it opened. Again, I don't remember what we ate ... I know that we ate A LOT though. I think I had a hamburger, some ribs and potato salad??? I'm terrible remembering the food stuff. Sorry. Just know that it was filling, messy and pretty tasty!:thumbsup2

After lunch, we headed down to the beach for some more playtime. Around 2:00pm, I decided to try snorkeling. I've never really been snorkeling anywhere cool. We used to snorkel in a mucky lake as kids pretending to be sea monsters. DH and I did snorkel at Castaway Cay on our first cruise, but we didn't see much - one of our dinner companions (who had snorkeled a lot) gave it a 2 out of 10. So, I put on my gear and headed out by myself. Again, I didn't see much. I actually didn't go too far b/c I got kind of freaked out all by myself - I'm a wimp. Everytime I saw some fish, I'd start to feel a bit panicky. I think I spent about 30 - 40 minutes snorkeling before dropping off my equipment and heading back to the family.

To be continued ...

DAY 3, CASTAWAY CAY, Part II

After my return to the family beach, DH and I discussed an exit strategy for the island. We had been out in the sun since 9:00am and the girls were starting to get tired. I could have floated on that little raft until they kicked us out of the water, but ...

So, around 3:30pm, we started to make the trek back to the ship. We stopped briefly to wash the sand off at a shower, then hit the gift shop to browse. I ended up buying a couple of pins and DH got a t-shirt. I tried to buy the girls t-shirts, but they weren't interested ...

We took a tram back to the ship and had a short wait to board. Once on board, we headed up to our rooms for baths and showers. We were originally going to try to attend the graduation at sea for the kids' clubs, but we were too pooped to rush ... so we missed graduation. By the time everyone was clean, it was approaching dinner. DD6 was very, very tired and we didn't think she would be able to handle the dining room ... so it was decided that DH and DD4 would head off to Parrot Cay, while DD6 and I would order room service.

About 10 minutes after DD4 and DH headed to dinner, our room service order arrived. Again, I don't remember what we got ... I think DD6 got hamburger and fries and I got a BLT???? We also had fresh fruit and a dessert. I'm terrible about these meal reports. Sorry.

Oh, and DH said the service at Parrot Cay was even worse than it was at Triton's! He said the servers kept messing up the orders all night long and were s-l-o-w. Our dining companions said it was terrible at Animator's Palate as well (and they had 4 less people to serve since we were at Palo) - the Grandma and Grandpa said this was their last Disney Cruise b/c of the service.

After dinner, we decided to head down to catch the 6:15pm showing of Disney Dreams. We made it just in the nick of time to catch a seat ... we were in the far back towards the left. DD6 really enjoyed the show and was excited to get a chance to hang out with Mom. I will say that the theater was pretty chilly though - so bring a sweater!

After the show, DD6 and I headed to the gift shop. BAD IDEA to save souvenier hunting until right after a show lets out! OMG! The place was mobbed. DD6 is a browser, so we went over that place with a fine toothed comb before she decided on some apple scented "Snow White" cologne (it actually doesn't smell that bad ... a light fruity scent that disappates quite rapidly, so even if your 6 year old drenches herself in it before school, she won't smell horrid ... not that it has happened to us.;) ). Just as we were heading for the check out, whom should we see but DH and DD4! DD4 was crying b/c she couldn't find the souvenier she wanted ... DH had no idea what she wanted, but I remembered the scrapbook stickers ... so as soon as I pointed them out, DD4 was a happy camper!:thumbsup2 DH stood in the long line for a bit while I picked out a pin and a Christmas ornament. Then, DH wandered around the store a bit while I stood in line. Eventually, we were able to give Disney some more money and leave the store.

After the gift shop, it was decided that DH would head back to the room with DD6 and get her to bed while I wandered around with DD4 for a bit. DD4 and I walked around a bit, then headed back to the room. We then got DD 4 ready for bed and loaded her into the bottom bunk. (Sometime during the day, we must have packed up b/c we had the luggage in the hall at the correct time ... I just don't remember when that happened.)

With the little ones tucked away in bed, I headed over to shutters and the cruise booking desk.

At shutters, I purchased the family boarding photo and a beach picture of each girl. They also had a really cute picture of DD4 with Captain Hook, but I skipped it ... (we did meet a couple of characters during the cruise, we just sort of randomly bumbed into the lines in the Atrium ... we never called for character greeting times).

After shutters, I headed over to the cruise booking desk. I don't remember the agents name, but I think it was Kylie??? I got quotes for 3 cruises - a 4 night one in August 2009 (we had alread booked this back in June 2008, but the price was $150 cheaper if I re-booked onboard), a 7 night Eastern with Tortola and 7 night Western - both in August 2009. I had written down prices from Disney's website before leaving, so I would have an idea of how much booking onboard was actually saving.

After securing the quotes, I headed back to our stateroom to discuss the options with DH. DH said he wanted to cruise longer next time, so we decided to nix the 4 night we already had scheduled and book a 7 night Western (mainly b/c it was about $1800 cheaper than the Eastern and we've never been on either, so it didn't make a whole lot of difference to us).

So, I headed back to Kylie and had her book us the 7 night Western. When she went to book, she told us that main dining was full.:sad1: I told her that second dining was a deal breaker and I wasn't interested in the 7 night if it was only second seating (when I looked it up online the day before departure, the Western cruise still had main dining available). Kylie said she would send an email to somebody in booking and was 99.7% certain that she could get us switched to the main dining. I was skeptical, but decided to go for it (Kylie was true to her word ... I checked our reservation online about a week after we got home and we had been switched to the main dining).

After booking the cruise, I headed back to the state room. DH and I were snoozing by 10:00pm.

DAY 4, AUGUST 2nd ... leaving the ship

We were up bright and early on the final day. Well, 3 of us were. DD4 was sleeping like a rock! The girl was so tuckered out from our day at the beach. We were all showered and dressed, the blinds were open, the TV was on and I'm sure a few announcements had been made over the intercom. NOTHING. She just continued to sleep (and drool a bit ... only a mother could love that). We rubbed her back. NOTHING. DH picked up her arm and it fell right back on her bed. I've never seen her so tired. Eventually, we got her up and dressed, but it was cute watching her sleep that Disney sleep!

According to the Navigator, we were supposed to eat at Triton's. But, I'm 99% certain that we headed to Beach Blanket Buffet instead for one last meal. The girls Loved the buffet ... :confused3

After eating, we headed over to the customer service area to settle our bill, then walked off the ship... sniff, sniff.

Back in the terminal, we got in the very long line and waited to be cleared by security/customs. The line was so long that I had time to use the bathroom. Then I had time to run DD6 and DD4 to the bathroom.

We boarded our DCL bus and headed back to MCO. Our DCL bus was very crowded by the time we boarded ... there were only 2 seats together on the entire bus, so the DD's sat next to each other and DH sat across the row from them ... I was up front by some random "stranger". We had a very talkative driver, but I don't remember what she said.:rotfl: Ride to the airport was uneventful and we made it to MCO in plenty of time for our flight.

Then, it was ... back to life, back to reality.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I forgot to include a few things in my report, so I thought I would add them here. Some observations, some thoughts.

- I forgot to mention, but on the Nassau day, DD4 was sobbing uncontrollably at bedtime b/c she rememberd that she forgot some Little Einsteins tattoos at the Oceaneer Club. So, I walked back to the club ... those nice people there gave me at least a dozen pages of Disney tattoos for my sad girl!

- Also, they have the cutest little bathrooms at the Oceaneer's Club! Tiny doors, tiny sinks ... very kid friendly. And, also, as soon as your child enters a club, they squirt liquid soap into their hands, so the first thing the child has to do is head to the sink to wash up ... CLEVER!

My thoughts on the kids' clubs:

I thought my kids would love them. I thought I would love them. Turns out, we had kind of a middle of the road reaction to them. The girls liked some of the activities, but they were never really begging to go or anything. As for DH and I - it was nice to have a little bit of time to ourselves (Palo, lunch at Triton's), but we both enjoyed hanging out with the kids on the cruise.

My thoughts on a 3 night cruise

Too short!

My favorite Dis tips
- You can try to change your dinner seating on board. I would have never thought to do this if it weren't for the Dis.

- A nightlight in the room is a fabulous idea! The middle of the ocean is dark at night!

- Bring a sweater! Even if the temps are in the 90's outside, Disney keeps it cool on the inside.

- Board the ship as soon as you can ... we had 4 more hours on the ship than a lot of people!

- If you have kids, bring their swim suits in your carry on so they can use the Mickey Pool ASAP.

- Order room service!

- Staying on the ship for Nassau day is perfectly fine!

- Bring your own waterproof cameras ... DCL sells them, but they are expensive!

- stuff your empty luggage under the bed

- eat at Palo!

My sort of last words

It was a nice vacation. Relaxing, fun, family friendly.

We really loved the set up of the room ... the bunk beds were great for the kids and that little dividing curtain was so nice. DH and I would keep the light on and read after the girls went to bed and we didn't bother them a bit.

Our table service left a lot to be desired, but I'm hoping we just had a bad batch of servers.

I actually prefer WDW to a cruise though. I know. :scared1:

The Future

Currently, we are booked on a 7 night Western in August 2009.
DH and the girls really, really want to cruise again, so we will probably go.

Personally, I'd like to take the money and head west to San Diego and Disneyland ...

DH doesn't want to travel that far on a plane with the girls next summer ...

We have some extra DVC points to use next summer, I'd like to use them to stay at the Grand Californian ...

DH would like to use the points to stay at Animal Kingdom for a few nights before the cruise...

And so it goes ...

Thank you so much for the trip report, it was great.

So glad you had a nice vacation. We are booked for our first cruise ever for May '09. We can't wait.

Thanks again!

What time did you make it back to the airport? I'm currently freaking out about a change in my flight time!

Thanks for the report. I hope you have better servers on your next cruise.
Thanks for reading!

great tips!!! Thanks much!!! :goodvibes

I'm glad you enjoyed the report. Have a great time on your cruise!!

Thanks for your TR! :)
You're welcome!:)

What time did you make it back to the airport? I'm currently freaking out about a change in my flight time!

I don't know the exact time we made it back to the airport, but my camera clock says we were killing time in the airport Disney store by 10:04am. :) Our flight was scheduled for 1:20pm ... so we had PLENTY of time.

Fun report. I am sorry about the service. We have late dining for our cruise. I am a bit worried but think I am going to try and keep the girls on Az time so it will not be to late. They will be 5 and a half and 3 when we go. My older one is just lke your older one. In bed by 715p up by 545a-no matter what time we put her to bed. Stopped napping at almost 3 though rarely can be bribed "to rest" We told her on our cruise last May if she wanted to go to the shows she had to nap. It owrked half the time. Thanks for your report.
