Well, we are back from sunny Florida to snow snow snow in New England. Here is our trip report. I enjoyed writing it so I could relive our trip :
Us: Joel-33, myself-31, and Emily-5 years (left home was our 1 year old, Jeremy).
We were forecasted for a big storm on Christmas day, the day we were leaving, so on Christmas Eve I was calling American Airlines to find out if we could hop on an earlier flight to insure that we would make our 12/26 Wonder Cruise. I never buy trip insurance (worked for Swissair for almost 10 years and have traveled quite a bit, never felt the need to), but I was actually nervous this time, but I did plan a day early to Florida, so I figured we would make it some time in the next 24 hours
We made it out of Boston just one hour late, and we were lucky from the reports I heard. Our flight for the first 30 minutes was AWFUL. We departed an hour late (3:30), and we were being juggled around the plane like ragdolls. Anyone who was in the bathrooms was instructed to stay there. NO getting out of your seats whatsoever. I actually had tears in my eyes, that is how scared I was. But after 30 minutes, it was smooth sailing..
We finally got into Orlando about 8PM Christmas night, and stayed at the Marriott Renaissance (sp?) at the Airport with a cheap rate from Priceline. Very nice, although we were not there long..
Left for the port with Art's Transportation Service (HIGHLY RECOMMEND-rates beat everyone else's, and they were early to pick us up every time) at 10am Thursday morning, and got to the Port at about 11am. Checked right in, one of the first ones there, and went to look at the ship! Oh, was it beautiful! We had seen it it's inaugural year when we did a Carnival 3-day to Nassau, and I was envious then, but seeing it up close and knowing we were going on it, we were all excited! Of course the buzz around the terminal/check-in agents was of the former president and family. There was a dive team, bomb sniffing dogs, and the coast guard ship waiting there for us to leave. It was quite amazing knowing we were either going to be one of the securest places on earth for 3 days, or one of the biggest targets :.
Anyways, they started boarding right after 12pm, and went up to lunch at the Beach Blanket Buffet. We then we were to get into our staterooms, we had 6554, which was perfect. Midship, near an elevator. There was some traffic outside our stateroom through the night, but I can sleep through anything, plus, we left our verandah door open a couple of inches at night, and the sounds of the ocean pretty much drowned out any hall noise. We had decided beforehand to skip Palo's, since we were only on a 3-day, and wanted to see each of the restaurants, and didn't know how Emily would do in the clubs, but then went off to do the spa ressies (first in line!) and got the times/services we wanted. Then, my daughter wanted to get right into the Mickey pool, but goodness, it was WINDYYYY! I had on jeans, sweatshirt, and my daughter's towel wrapped around me, and Emily was right in the pool, going down the slide, etc All the little kids were, and all the parents were shivering.. It really was a funny picture..
That is when I got my first glimpse of the former president and Jeb. I was sitting on one of the lounges and saw a bunch of men with suit coats on and dark, round, tiny glasses and knew he was coming. Jeb and the president were walking on deck. People seemed to leave them alone, or lean over to shake their hand, but nothing chaotic at all about it. I am not a star-struck person, but it was exciting to me to be that close to a president, when I am sure it won't happen again in my lifetime
After swimming, we got Emily signed up in the kids club, ages 5-7. She loved being in there initially when we were filling out the paperwork, so I thought that was a good sign ('thought' being the key word more on this later)..After that, we toured the ship, looked at all the beautiful Christmas decorations, the big tree on the main deck when you first arrive. Emily loved the gingerbread house that was built the most. It really was cute. We pretty much relaxed after that until dinnertime, as we had late seating
We had the TAP rotation for dinner. I was a bit disappointed that Triton's was our first night, because I felt like being more 'casual', seeing that we had just gotten our luggage late, unpacked etc, but we probably could have worn our swimsuits to the dining room and it wouldn't have mattered. People were dressed from A-Z. There were very few formally dressed people, A LOT of people in jeans, and some in shorts. I just wore a plain black cocktail dress, and my husband wore a tie and pants, and we were overdressed. I did see more formally dressed people on the 2nd and 3rd nights of the cruise. Maybe those people dressed down in Triton's the first night felt as I did, wishing it were later in the cruise
As for Triton's, if we do another Disney Cruise in the future, I would probably skip this restaurant and opt for trying out Palo's. The food was fine, I certainly am not a food connoisseur, but I enjoyed it the least out of all three. Not really a specific reason why
We also had late seating, if I didn't mention that already. Traveling with a 5-year old who wants to eat dinner with us, I would definitely make sure I changed to early seating next time. This was our 6th cruise (first Disney), and I always request late seating, because I don't like to be rushed before dinner, and even when my daughter was 3 we had late seating on a Carnival cruise, but for some reason this time I would have preferred to eat dinner and then go to the shows. For this reason, we skipped Hercules, and we saw the matinee of Disney Dreams at 3:15PM after Castaway Cay (not sure if they do the matinee on the 7 day, but I am glad they did it this way, or else we probably would have skipped it).
After dinner at Triton's, we pretty much walked up on deck for a few minutes, although it was extremely windy, and then went back to our room. I LOVED having the balcony, first time I have ever booked this, and wouldn't want to be without it again if I had a choice (i.e. if I have the money
. It was so nice to sit out there and just listen to the water, and then to go to bed and listen. It was chilly at night, so we just left the sliding door open a couple of inches, which was perfect.
NASSAU
We arrived in Nassau, and the weather was perfect. I had my Spa Taster scheduled for 8am in the spa, so was happy to get to that. It was wonderful, a massage of the back and legs, and a facial with scalp massage. Heaven to say the least. I did get 'suckered' into buying some facial products, but I do like them and will probably keep with them. Joel and Emily ate breakfast while I had my massage, then my daughter was dying to get back up to the kid's club, so we brought her up there. One of the counselors told us that there really was nothing for a 5-year old in Nassau, which I agree with since we have been there before, so feel free to go ashore, etc. We opted to do this for a couple of hours, and left her in the club.
Joel and I went to the Atlantis and gambled for a couple of hours, which was fun. I have to say that I did miss not having a casino on the ship. We are not by any stretch of the imagination big gamblers, but do enjoy it when on vacation. We ended up leaving with about $100 more than we went there with, which made it nice, but we wanted to get back to the ship to make sure Emily was doing okay in the club.
Emily did fine in the club, since she goes to preschool three days a week, but I think we chose the wrong time to bring her, since they were doing the animation of Mickey in Animator's palate, and she really just wanted to play around the club with the climbing structures, etc. Then they had lunch in the restaurant, and her stomach wasn't up to par, so she didn't eat and was ready for us to pick her up when we got back (about 2 hours total). This, for some reason, turned her off from going back to the club. She wanted nothing to do with it, which was fine with me, but I think next time I will play closer attention to exactly which activity was going on at that particular time and plan accordingly.
We did play BINGO a couple of times throughout the cruise, cant remember which days and when, but didn't win anything, but it was fun.
After we got back to the ship from Nassau, and had lunch, we spent the rest of the afternoon by the pools, and I mean both, because, as the worker on the ship put it, there 'was fecal release in the mickey pool'. (Not said to offend anyone, and sorry for my choice of words, but my husband and I got a good chuckle out of that). This point really annoys me. It says to please not bring un-potty trained children in the pool, but there were at least 3 or 4 at different times that I counted where you could clearly see they had on a diaper or swimmy diaper. For this reason alone, I would choose a different type of vacation and not do a cruise, etc. Go to a beach. The pools were very busy, even during the day at Nassau because I think a lot of people chose not to get off the ship, and it was quite annoying that the Mickey Pool had to be shut down for what seemed like over an hour Anyways .off my soapbox
After the Mickey Pool, we went back to the room and Emily had a nap, and I read out on my verandah while watching a one-manned boat travel up and down the length of the ship, I guess to make sure no unwanted guests boarded that way because of the Bush family Up and down, up and down That guy must have been bored to tears. He was there THE WHOLE TIME!!
Joel went and got his massage during this time, and had our second president sighting. My husband was waiting for his attendant?/masseuse? and the president and his daughter-in-law walked in alone (without secret service, unless they were lurking outside of the spa), and George started to explain to the receptionist that his DIL forgot to make her spa reservation for Castaway Cay and would there be any way to fit her in?? I am thinking they found a spot for her :
I think we then went to play another round of Bingo before dinner. On Nassau night, we had Animator's Palate for dinner. What a great restaurant. My favorite of all three. I love how the pictures "came to life" throughout dinner. I can't remember what I ate, but it was fine. The food throughout the cruise didn't make me "ooooh and ahhh", but it was good, but nothing stands out in my mind (I guess we should have ate at Palo's then?????"). I didn't mention that we had Katarina from Croatia and Bhoola from South Africa as our servers. Both were magnificent and very attentive. We sat with a couple and their daughter from Washington state, and it was very pleasant.
After dinner, we again walked around, got autographs and such, and made our way back to our cabin. Emily fell asleep and I again hung out on the verandah reading
Castaway Cay=a little piece of paradise. Gosh, I loved that place. I loved the beach, the whole set-up of it. We had a wonderful day, although WINDYYY again, but still managed to get a bit too much sun. We snorkled, swam around a bit, although a bit chilly at first. Lunch was good, walked around the pathways, met up with the characters. All-in-all the best day of the cruise for sure! And I do love those Konk Coolers!!
Back to the ship, and we saw the matinee of Disney Dreams. It was a really nice show, my daughter really enjoyed it. I am so glad they did the matinee version, as then we went back to our cabin to enjoy the ride back out to sea and relax after a nice day at the beach..
At some point, we did go to Who Wants to Be A Mouseketeer? I think the prizes won were 80, 80 and $175. The $175 winner was a boy about 8 or 9? and his father, BUT it was the young boy who was answering all the questions. He went for the 7 night cruise, but missed the question. The question was "Robin Williams has played all of the following characters except:?". They gave 4 names of people from different movies. We didn't have a clue, but the boy risked it (what did he have to lose??
and unfortunately missed! It was fun to watch and the host was great!!
Dinner was at Parrot Cay that night and it was good. My daughter enjoyed the limbo show they did and before that, our server, Katarina, brought her up to the dance floor to dance. Really, really cute (I then slipped an extra $10 in their tip envelopes because to see the joy on my daughter's face was so worth it)..
Back to the room to quickly pack and then go and enjoy the ship for our last evening on board! What a QUICK 3 days and now we were off to Disney world from Sunday 12/29-1/1
All in all, it was a great cruise, great trip. The good points that I can think of off the top of my head is
The impeccable service
The cleanliness of the ship
The beauty of the ship
The great activities and the way they set up the character greetings
Things that I didn't like:
#1 was those silly soda mugs. I apologize if people do like them, but I thought carrying around a mug for 3 days was crazy. Was it ever washed out with warm, soapy water? If they are going to run a program like that, go back to the sticker on the KTTW cards. Or, for that matter, lower your soda prices to maybe 75 cents or a $1, and I am sure people would opt just to pay for it individually. There was one woman I saw that walked around with 4 or 5 mugs at a time hanging around her neck! Another option, like I saw on our last Carnival cruise: sell the big 20 oz bottles with the top that you can put back on and pour yourself into a cup of ice when necessary. I think carnival sold them for $2.50 each, which is expensive, but I like that option much better. I don't know why this is such a big pet peeve of mine!!
#2. We were playing Bingo one time and the drink server came over and asked if we would like a drink. My 5-year old said she would, and I asked Emily if she would like some ginger ale, and the server suggested fruit punch to her, which Emily quickly agreed to. She brings my daughter back this big glass cup that a fancy drink should have been in, with fruit punch, filled to the brim with ice, and hands me the bill for $3.50+gratuity. If I wasn't so busy trying to concentrate on getting BINGO, I would have fallen off the chair. I guess that kind of annoyed me, as I felt that she offered my daughter that because she would get $2.00 more towards the gratuity price. I didn't say anything, because I was on vacation :, but just felt taken advantage of that one time.
#3. The picture prices. There is no deal on a 3 day cruise with the package prices. I think we ended up buying 2 or 3 6x8s (and WHY do they have to sell the 6x8s?? I can answer my own question
.
There is probably more on both ends that I just cant think of at this time. I did love the ship, the cruise, and would probably do it again IF the price was right, which I have found to be rare in terms of my research I have done for each of our cruises. I have been on Celebrity, Carnival, Norwegian, and RCCL, and would most likely opt for RCCL for the price comparison, because they did have better food, and I do love the mega-ships. For the amount of times my daughter met up with the characters, I am not sure it was totally worth it. It was for the 2 minutes of joy she got each time, but all in all, I am still undecided on that and I think a $150 day trip to Disney world would take care of that :. If you have never done a Disney cruise, I would recommend trying one, just for the experience. But if you are going to base your decision on price alone, I would recommend a different line for that reason only
Hope you enjoyed my honest report!
