Wk Of Sept 15 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Good morning team.....

Just stopping by to say hi.

Yesterday was suppose to be a rest day but we did 4K of walk 2, jog 1. Not bad but I started to get shin splints, I think I didn't warm up enough but it wasn't horrible.....a few months ago I couldn't even jog between 2 lights posts.

Have a super day all

Kim

Good morning WISHers! :surfweb:
Sunday DH and I ran 10 miles together. I always feel bad b/c I am so much slower than he is but he insists it is a good thing for him as it makes him slow down. He was having some calf issues on the TM a week ago so he's been trying to run outside. It was nice and cool here on Sunday so it was a very pleasant run.

Yesterday was a rest day and today is either 3 or 5 miles depending on how my legs feel.

WWDave: did you and the dog have a good pee this morning? :lmao: Yup, you've started it now!!

Judy: how's the foot doing? Good to see you working out again!!!

Jen in GA: nice job on the run!!

Leana: good God!! SNOW!?! :scared1: It's September; doesnt' Mother Nature know that's going to wreak havoc on training? Seriously, if you go out in it, be careful!

nepatsfan Bill: where are you when we need you? Speaking of football, how about them Patriots!?! Did they make a point or what!?! Discuss....:rolleyes1

wfloyd Bill: how are the little ones doing?

meghan74: yea! on being 99% recovered! Please take it easy and don't reinjure yourself.

Have a great day everyone!

I never did get a chance to post my Iron Girl 10K pictures, so here they are folks! Boy, my official race photos are terrible.... I guess a fast race = terrible pictures!

Hi Team:

Still here. Please know I do keep up with this thread even when I don't post and am inspired by WISHers' achievements, training and over-coming of injuries and other issues. I continue to deal with my ongoing back problems. Spasms have subsided, but now I've got sharp pain. I think the spasms re-aligned the disks for me again. Unfortunately, all my covered PT visits, plus a bunch of add ons by the physical therapist, have been used up for the year dealing with the hips and other back problems. We'll see how it goes until I get more in 2008.

I have been doing strength work and some stationary bike, but when I walk up to about 1 to 1.5 miles, the back strongly voices its objection. If this distance event stuff doesn't work out, I am thinking of maybe trying the Strongest Man Competitions. I figure I am bent in half a fair amount now, which should give me an advantage in the truck pull contest anyway. The one advantage to this is I have confirmed that frustration and anger are eating triggers for me, which I've only known for a couple of decades. I need to work on that too.

*Christa/HornedFrogPhipps*-Congrats on the Century ride. Do you really even have 3000 calories to burn? By the way, what kind of therapist are you and do you treat people on the side via the internet? I could probably use all the assistance I can get. (j/k about internet treatments, but me needing assistance is subject to further consideration and review.)

*WWDave*-So, you keep out of trouble by dropping me from Mel Gibson to Homer Simpson? I am REALLY looking forward to meeting you at ToT now. Congrats on the morning constitutional as well. We Puritans in New England really frown on dog owners relieving themselves on our lawns, but different strokes for different folks.

*Kim/hockeychic*-You know I greatly appreciate your support, checking on me and offering to assist with packet pick-ups and other things, but the CFL? Come on. Punting on third down, 10 people all moving on offense before the ball is snapped, 110 yard (or is it meters?) long fields, etc. That's not FOOTBALL. Plus, didn't Doug Flutie play for every CFL team and win each of them the Grey Cup while he won MVP?

*Vic*-Glad to see the running coming along. *Vic and Robert*-The beauty of the Browns/Bengals game was that both teams are coached by guys [formerly?] regarded as defensive gurus. Then again, Notre Dame is coached by Charlie Weiss, an offensive mastermind, and ND has yet to score a touch down this year.

Thanks all for letting me vent a little. Good luck to everyone with your continued training and/or injury recoveries. Mel, Dana or anyone else in the greater Orlando area, please take an extra "accidental" trip to WDW for me.

Hey Guys.

Just a quick post. I did 3.5 miles yesterday and plan the same for today.

WWDave thanks for starting the intro thread. I plan to post to it later today.

Happy Training everyone.

Dona

Jen in GA - I will try to answer your question to the best of my ability and experience, however please remember I only have my experience to go on!! What I started doing was using one day a week as a speed workout. Most of the time I run intervals based on the intensity level, not so much speed. An Level 1 takes no effort at all, and a Level 10 is where it takes all you got to continue for 1 minute. Here's an example of the 20 min interval plan I use. Yesterday I just extended it for 40 minutes and ran it twice to complete my 5 miles.

Min 0-2 Intensity level 5
Min 2-3 Level 6
Min 3-4 Level 7
Min 4-5 Level 8
Min 5-6 Level 9
Min 6-7 Level 6
Min 7-8 Level7
Min 8-9 Level8
Min 9-10 Level 9
Min 10-11 Level 6
Min 11-12 Level 7
Min 12-13 Level 8
Min 13-14 Level 9
Min 14-15 Level 6
Min 15-16 Level 7
Min 16-17 Level 8
Min 17-18 Level 9
Min 18-19 Level 10
Min 19-20 Level 5

Other times I do sprints (or fartleks depending on where I am training) where I just run ALL out for a certain distance (or time) and then run a certain distance (or time) at a nice slow recovery jog. On a track I run the straights and jog the curves. Since I only run 4 days a week, I tend to use the FIRST training theory, check out their marathon plan at http://www.furman.edu/FIRST/fmtp.htm , where my runs are ALL for a specific purpose. I try not to run any miles just to run them, I run them with a goal. My mid week LR is usually a speed workout, and my two shorter runs are run at "TEMPO" pace. Then I run the last 1/3 of my LR at my planned marathon pace. Granted, I don't use their actual training plan ( I am using Hal Higdon's Novice plan) but I use the theory.

I have been using the McMillan Running Calculator, http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm , to help me determine what my paces should be for these different runs in order to acheive the goal I have in mind for Disney. It kind of takes the guess work out of all of it!!

I hope that helps, and I hope that I haven't overloaded anyone with info, or bored anyone with my rambling!!

Dana

Good Grief, I miss checking the boards for a day and now I'm way behind. I did read everything, but can't respond to all now. Have a meeting to preapre for.

However, I just have to say, I guess I can't hang with Robert and Dave :confused3 . Cheer for the Cowboys? :scared1: That's sacrilege. I'd be drummed out of the city, not to mention my family. My sister would string me up (actually, I'd probably string myself up)!
Nope. Just can't do it. Would go into convulsions, spasms, whatever ;)

Even though my team sucked last night (and last week), I'd have to have a lobotomy to root for the 'Boys. Even then it would questionable. Remember we threw snowballs at Jimmy Johnson (not me personally).

Welcome to NFL season!

Terri

Terri, I don't know the first thing about football but I do know Jimmy Johnson races with NASCAR. :snooty:

Hi, Kim! Great job on being able to do those intervals. You have come such a long way!! :thumbsup2 Be careful with the shin splints, but I hope you are incredibly proud of yourself!!! :)

Leana -- Those pix are great! You were obviously totally trucking!!!! :cool1:

Terri -- My friend/partner Jessica did the Philly run and LOVED it. The course actually passed her house! She finished under 2:00:00 so she was totally thrilled. She shared her goody bag with Andrew and some of the stuff was totally cool, including the official race shirt. I may have to do that race next year! Funny, she didn't mention a medal, and since I only do the races for the bling, I may have to confirm there is actually bling, and not just race bag goodies! ;)

So nice to see everyone here and posting. Sending pixiedust: for everyone to recover from their hurts as we move into marathon training.

As for me, I haven't even had time to put my schedule on a calendar. I did 8 miles on Saturday just because it seemed like that might be the right distance, but my evenings are consumed with logistics of being something of a single parent who works long hours and LOVES to attend her kids' activities. The good news is both of my doctor appointments and all the bloodwork I had done have been great and I am so healthy that I have NO excuse for not getting out there. And apparently, with all the numbers looking so great, no one is worried about my weight anymore except me! :lmao: I am to just keep doing what I'm doing because it's working. LOL!!

Okay, where's my copy of MfM with that marathon training schedule? . . . .

nepatsfan Bill: where are you when we need you? Speaking of football, how about them Patriots!?! Did they make a point or what!?! Discuss....:rolleyes1

You know, I am happy with the win, but the team still has a lot of work to do. Clearly, I am happy where the Pats are at this time (2-0 after beating two playoff teams from last year], but issues need to be addressed.

Offense: Tom Brady has to work with his new recieving corp so they can feel comfortable together and get on the same page. :scared1: Randy Moss missed all the pre-season games, Kyle Brady is still recovering from injury and all but one of the receivers is new to the offense. Plus Stephen Neal, one of the Pats best offensive linemen, missed the game with a shoulder injury. Once the offense has some time to work together and get in shape, they should be more consistant and on the same page.

Defense: The team is trying to fill holes for now and will only get better once the key 25% that is missing gets back and healthy.:scared1: Richard Seymour (the All Pro) is out with an injury, Rodney Harrison, the heart and soul of the defense, is out due to his transgressions and Asante Samuel (the team's best cornerback) sat out all of training camp and is trying to get in fotball shape. Once these guys get back and healthy, then the defense will be able to better run its schemes.

So, in general, things are OK but the team is not where it needs to be and that will come with hard work. Its a long season and its time to move onto the Bills game on Sunday.

[The above is Pats-speak. As a fan, great win. The "piling on" being displayed by players and coaches alike due to Belichick's screw up is getting ridiculous and it was nice to have Mr. "Classless" LT shut up a little. Nothing personal Krista and Steve, but to hear Steeler players now claiming that the Patriots must have cheated because the Steelers lost the TWO AFC Championship games is laughable. Even Bill Cowher said on Sunday the Steelers just got beat. What Belichick did was against league rules and there are no excuses. But come on, the players have to play the games.]

Dana- thanks for your response. you didn't bore me! I was thinking of doing one "speed" workout per week and I'm pretending today was the one for this week, so I'll try your plan next Tuesday. I like how that will work on the TM rather than trying to all-out run and then slow down a ton over and over. I'm going to study that link in a minute (I like to sit and eat my lunch at work at my desk, so I can you know, get so much done):rolleyes1

Judy- I'm thinking I will either have to ignore all the football posts or actually try to start watching to get some basic understanding... I'm leaning towards ignoring.:rotfl:

OK, really have to work now...

Jen in GA

Hi team. I'm still here and still plodding along. I was really hurting last week after my glorious return to Body Pump, but this week I'm feeling pretty good. :thumbsup2 I can actually walk down stairs without pain! It may be time to up my weights in a week or so!

Running is just steady. I ran 3 miles today but very slowly. I'm not the energizer bunny lately! It can be frustrating!:headache:

I'm so impressed with everyone's training!
Jen in Ga--speedy girl!
Leana--Wow! Great race and I think you're pictures are great! Snow!???:santa:
Cam--No one seems concerned about my weight except me either.:confused3 I'm defying the laws of physics by gaining weight despite burning more calories than I've taken in. I'm glad you're doctor's visits are going so well.
Christa-- way to go on the century ride!:dance3:

Football is lost on me as well. Go Bears!

Happy training!

Hi, WISHers!

Today was an easy day for me - xt on the bike and some weights to work on my core (back, abs, hips). I'm hoping that will help out with my hip issues. I've been better about icing it and it feels good. We'll see what happens tomorrow when I run again!

Judy - I HATE running on the track! I can't think of anything more boring. And I always lose track of how many laps I've done!

Kim - Hope those shin splints don't act up!

WWDave - I see you (and your dog) have gotten yourself in trouble again! :rotfl:

Christa - WTG with the hills! Awesome pace I can only dream of!

Robert - :snooty: (I'm ignoring you on principle - I'm not only a Browns fan but also a Cowboys anti-fan!)

Vic - So now that we know all about your ideas on the nfl, how are those feet feeling?

Cam - I agree with longer runs being really tough on the schedule! I don't know what I'm going to do when they start getting really long - my longest will be 24!

Dana - So glad those stroller days are over for me! DD and I watched a mom pushing a double yesterday and it brought back memories (she's in high school now!)

TxAng - WTG doing 1.4 instead of 1 - a 40% increase!

SilverSteve - Continued PD for the achilles!

Meghan - Yay! Hope you get back into training and stay injury free!

Helen - PD for your half on Saturday!

Bill - Something's wrong when 85 is "a little cooler" in September!

Leana - Great photos!

JeninGA - More green for you!

Martha - WTG with the 10 miler! DH is also faster than me although I run more; that's really frustrating!

patsBill - PD for the back! I understand about the pt coverage - DH usually runs his out by February!

Dona - WTG with the 3.5!

Terri - I'm with you on the 'boys!

Vicki - They do say the muscle weighs more than fat. :confused3

Happy training, all!

Hey Cam, this race is on my list for next year. There is definitely a medal, in fact at the CDC expo they had a display and I think that if you did the Philly race in conjunction with the VA RnR half you got a Beach to Bell medal too, and if you did any other Elite Racing half in conjuction with Philly you got a Dynamic Duo medal! Not sure if that was a special 2007 only offering, but how cool is that?? I believe Wendy got the Beach to Bell medal IIRC. I was just cleaning out some stuff by my computer and found the Philly brochure and told DH that I want to put this one down for 2008!

And snowballs at Santa Claus:sad2:

I won't rub in how well we are doing and how well Philly is doing:banana:

BTW: Just received Disney Press Release. It's official DVC at Disneyland:

18 September 2007
DISNEYLAND RESORT EXPANDING DISNEY’S GRAND CALIFORNIAN HOTEL & SPA

First West Coast Disney vacation villas planned

ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept 18, 2007 – Responding to a growing demand for guest accommodations in Anaheim, the Disneyland Resort today celebrated an expansion of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa that will increase accommodations by more than 30 percent and will include the first Disney Vacation Club villas in Anaheim.

This expansion, scheduled for completion in late 2009, will involve 300 union construction jobs and result in 100 new hotel jobs. It underscores Disney’s long-term commitment to growing and investing in Anaheim. The expansion also marks the latest in a series of major additions to the Resort that include the newly launched Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage at Disneyland and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney’s California Adventure.

“This expansion underscores our commitment to growing and investing in both the Disneyland Resort and the Anaheim Resort Area,” said Ed Grier, president of the Disneyland Resort. “These new hotel rooms and villas will give more people the opportunity to enjoy the immersive vacation experience Disney is known for. We know that our guests value being able to stay in the middle of the magic with our world-class theme parks, shopping and dining just steps away.”

The 2.5-acre expansion on the hotel’s south side will add more than 200 new hotel rooms and 50 two-bedroom equivalent vacation villas. Those vacation villas, to include kitchens, living and dining areas and other home-like amenities, will mark the West Coast debut of Disney Vacation Club, Disney’s innovative vacation-ownership program.

“For more than 50 years, the Disneyland Resort has been investing in our community and they have helped us build a world class resort destination in which all of Anaheim can be proud,” Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle said. “Thanks to Disneyland and the Anaheim Resort Area, Anaheim boasts one of the fastest growing markets in the country for hotel occupancy.”

Other elements planned for the project include a rooftop deck for viewing fireworks, a new swimming pool and about 300 underground parking spaces. Peter Dominick of 4240, architect for Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa as well as Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is designing the ambitious expansion. It will reflect the same California Arts & Crafts architecture of the existing hotel, which immerses guests in a turn-of-the-20th-century California experience.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa currently features 745 guest rooms, including 44 suites. Upon completion of the expansion project, the hotel will feature 945 guest rooms, including 44 guest suites, and 50 Disney Vacation Club two-bedroom equivalent vacation villas.

Terri, I don't know the first thing about football but I do know Jimmy Johnson races with NASCAR. :snooty:

However the Jimmy Johnson that Terri is talking about used to coach for the Cowboys. He replaced Tom Landry and was not thought of highly by several people at the time. I think he is a commentator on one of the networks now.

WWDave: did you and the dog have a good pee this morning? :lmao: Yup, you've started it now!!

Erica said as soon as we resolve that seat up/down issue I can start going inside again.

Anyway, Erica and I went for our walk together and since she hasn't been able to train much I told her to lead and do whatever pace and distance felt comfortable. I expected her to maybe do 3 or 4 miles. She indeed up doing a brisk 10 miles. Surprised the heck out of me. Then she said, "don't ever underestimate me". Must have struck a nerve there when I told her I better start doing weights since I was gonna have to carry her **** for 39.3 miles in that Goofy.

Slinking off now, have a fun day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Remember we threw snowballs at Jimmy Johnson (not me personally).

Welcome to NFL season!

The beauty is/was you probably could have hit Jimmy Johnson square in the head and I don't think his hair would have moved. Of course, that just might be my hair envy talking.

Hi Team:*Kim/hockeychic*-You know I greatly appreciate your support, checking on me and offering to assist with packet pick-ups and other things, but the CFL? Come on. Punting on third down, 10 people all moving on offense before the ball is snapped, 110 yard (or is it meters?) long fields, etc. That's not FOOTBALL. Plus, didn't Doug Flutie play for every CFL team and win each of them the Grey Cup while he won MVP?

Oh Bill now it is on!!!!! I am not sure if it is safe to post here my take on the differences between CFL football and NFL football that will be a discussion for ToT weekend.:headache: Actually my biggest complaint with NFL football is there is no creativity,(IMHO please don't all yell at me) the players are much too big and the field is much to small for anything big to ever happen. Basically the QB gives the ball to the RB...that's about it right:lmao: I do watch NFL football but it isn't my preference I love football. The only reason I (use) to love Mike Vick is he is (was) a scrambling type QB, he would be awesome in teh CFL but I don't think he would take the paycut:rotfl2:

Oh and I don't believe Flutie played for every CFL team but he was awesome for my Toronto Argos.

Just checking in real fast....been slammed at work. :scared:

Dana...I like the McMillan calculator, too...very handy.

TEK...you will complete that tri one day! :)

I did my small "long" run yesterday...5.9 miles when all was said and done. (so not quite 6, but the trail I was on worked out to 5.9). I went super easy...just under a 12:00 pace, with my run/walk pattern. Finished feeling like I could have gone longer, so that's a good start to running season. And I didn't go for more because I don't want to get an overuse injury this season.

Thanks for you guys checking up on me yesterday!
