Wk of Mar 26--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I took my dog on my walk/run this morning. We did 5k in 46:49. Slower than I would like, but I did do negative splits! I am off to take a bike safety training course in preparation for my MS150. Thinking of Mel during her Hogeye marathon, I mean training run. :)

Dana: Your little guy is SO cute! Glad he's feeling a little better....now some pixie dust for you to get well soon!!!!

Mel: Thinking of you!!!! :cheer2:

Did my 3.5 miler today! I'm happy to report that I ran the whole time! :teeth: Managed 10:34 mpm...not too bad! The entirety of mile 3 was up hill so I felt it was a good run to prep for my 5K in April. I think I'll run that same course at least once a week. The last .5 miles of the 5K is a hill so this should get me in shape :thumbsup2 .

Heading down to stretch and do some abs!

Sunny:

Mel: I'm another one who is allergic to everything (all animals, anything outside, anything inside, wasps, and shellfish!). So naturally I have two dogs, four birds, two guinea pigs, and I go out to ride at the barn. The only animal that I actually react to in real life is male cats. Why only males? Beats me! But the more I'm around them the less the reaction over time. The allergy doc tried to put me on meds but uh uh I am not doing that, when I got off of them everything was worse. Good luck with that. *pets the kitty* *sneezes*

Liz: :cheer2: You can do it! Do be careful though.

Tiff: Wow your mom was bookin' it! Is she a race walker? If I could get my walk times that high between runs I would be flying high :teeth:

DisneyGirl: Running an indoor track 50 times-- makes me dizzy just thinking about it!

Yay! I love my Garmin! During my 10mile long run Friday I decided to name him "Cricket" ....yes I named my Garmin. (My laptop's name is Bug in case you were wondering) Anyone who was watching me run was probably cracking up b/c everytime it would chirp (beep) at me I would make a face. We're still.....working out our relationship. Two quirks that I'm trying to figure out: Can you set intervals to repeat for a certain distance (or until you hit lap)? And when you are doing intervals is there anyway to get it to record your mile stats (instead of just each interval)? Definitely my new favorite toy! And I started cracking up and dancing today when it played its little music at the "Workout Complete" time!

Friday, I finally decided that I couldnt run on my shoes anymore so I went to the running store to get another pair. Keep in mind that I've only had these for two months and put 225 miles on them and they are gone. The owner of the store looked at them and was amazed at how fast they had gone thru. She says I am a toe striker and since most runners are heel strikers the shoe makers tend to design shoes to be durable in the heel and not in the toe-strike area. I had the Asics Kayono IX (sp?) and I absolutely loved them while they lasted (all two months of it) and I loved that they required no break in for me. Sooo she looked and found another pair of Asics that fit great (as I put it "they fit like home"), but that the treads in the toe area are designed differently and there is a break point that may help. She also insisted on a 20% discount since the others didnt last long. :goodvibes I've completely given up on coordinating workout colors....the first pair I had were light blue/silver (Asics Kayono X), the second were purple/silver, and these new ones are red/silver (Asics Gel-1110). Luckily I am so not a fashionista and could care less! I went running in them this morning in them and they felt great. I love that the toe box is a bit roomier which is a bonus.

Oh and I decided during my long run that I definitely need to be bringing food with me so I picked up some Kudos granola bars (the height of nutrition neh? hehe) at the store and I will be hunting down a fuel belt. I need to get one anyway for my runs this summer where I'm not pampered by having water fountains along the route. But I'm trying to figure this out: if you are supposed to get 8 to 12 oz of water every 15 min when you are running then for a 10 miler (takes about 2:15) then I would need to carry 90 oz of water? None of the belts even hold that much! I did see the platypus-type thing (I don't know what runners call it but thats what we called it when hiking), and that carries more. Does anyone use one of those? Does it get hot? Can you rate your water flow? ...I'm gonna be so weighed down by water I wont be able to :Pinkbounc

Well I'm off to....rest...uh I mean study :teeth: yeah..study :rolleyes2

OMG - that's so funny, I tend to name things but I haven't named my Garmin (at least not yet)......I too love the workout complete music. That put a huge smile on my face. :teeth: Glad you enjoy your Garmin as much as I do mine. :)

Well, we're back to square one. I attempted to run 6 miles yesterday, I made it 2 before my IT band started hurting. I'm not sure what to do now, I took 2 weeks off from running, cross trained 5 days a week for the past 2 weeks, started lifting weights, stretched before I started, I even did w3/r2. I had a 20 minute breakdown after I got off the treadmill before I reevaluated the situation. So here's my plan: I'm going to take another 2 weeks off from running, continue to cross train, but use the ellipitical instead of the stationary bike, continue to lift weights and walk at least 2 twice this week--instead of only cross training. I bought an ITBS band to help keep things in place, hoping that helps too. I'm still doing the Flying Pig half (6 weeks from today :cheer2: ), although I may be walking it or walk/running it. I'm walking 8 miles Saturday (gotta get the steps in), 9 miles on April 9, and then I'm going to trying running 3 miles on April 11--that will be 17 days off from running. If anyone else has any tips, I'd love to hear them!! :listen:

Sunny-- :grouphug: so sorry that you are stressed out and not feeling very well. Take care of yourself, your health is your #1 priority.

Melissa--How was the "training run"? I've been thinking about you all day.

Mel-- :grouphug: for your daughter. Hope you figure things out.

Liz--Good luck tomorrow!! How is the house situation coming along? Have you broken ground yet? We built our house in 2003, I loved the whole process. Stephen and I have already decided that we are definitely building our next house.

Dana-- :grouphug: for everything!! I'm glad your baby is feeling better, what a cutie!! I'll be thinking about you this weekend, keep us updated.

Jodi--I told you that you would love your Garmin!! Good job on your fund raising.

Kim--Good luck on your 15 today!

Carrie--How was your weekend? I hope this week is better for you, you deserve a break!!

Tiff--I get the side stitches every once in a while too. I don't get it, I always thought people who weren't in shape got the side stitches, I've learned that's not always the case. I've read in Runners World if you get a stitch, stand up as tall as you can, put your hands in the air and lean against the stitch (if it's your left, lean right to stretch your left side out) this can be done while running or walking. If that doesn't help, stop and stretch out, doing the same thing, but holding the stretch. I think the side stitches have something to do with lack of oxygen, but like Melissa, I will not make medical guesses!!

I think I'm going to try to walk 3 miles in a little bit, feeling like slug with only doing 2 miles this weekend.

Greetings everyone, just checking in to see what all is going on. Looks like the DL 1/2 is now full. It seems that the DL 1/2 filled up faster than the WDW did last year.

I have not signed up for the goofy again this year yet, but it is becoming more and more likely. Receiving the certificates and the CD definately helped me forget what running a 1/2 and full back-to-back feels like!

I did 20 miles yesterday in 3:34. It felt good to get out there and get the miles back up. Now it is taper time for the Albuquerque Tricentennial Marathon on Apr 22.

I have discovered that I am faster when I run with music. Maybe the music distracts me from my legs? Who knows. Of course, I just loaded a bunch of random songs from my computer onto my MP3 player, so I have a wide variety of songs. It goes from U2 to Disney songs to Guns'N'Roses to the Wiggles.

Happy training everyone, and try to stay injury free. Even if it means taking a few weeks off to recover.

Paul

Hey everyone!! I'm back. I'll have to post race report later. I ran the marathon, got free massage, ate pizza, went to awards ceremony, used the bathroom paper towells to "bathe" (memaw calls it a "spit bath") and went to a baby shower 30 minutes away!!! I'm home, but filthy w/ horrible hair and in a dress! Must take a shower and love on the boy. Set a PR today 4:42 :-) I didn't mean to, it just happened.

I have lots to respond to and I will, just not now.

Welcome Back Mel!!! Congrats on the PR!!! :thumbsup2 :cool1: :thumbsup2 Maybe that pig nose opened up your airways like a breath right strip.

But I'm trying to figure this out: if you are supposed to get 8 to 12 oz of water every 15 min when you are running then for a 10 miler (takes about 2:15) then I would need to carry 90 oz of water?

The Garmin Question: You can set it to track your intervals. Go to Interval Training using your mode and arrow buttons, select it. From there you can tell it what intervals you would like, by distance and rest time, by distance and rest distance, by time and rest time ,and time and rest distance. For example on tuesday I need to do 6x1200 with 2 minutes of rest. So I select distance and rest time, type in the numbers and it will ask me how many reps. It won't take mile splits in this mode however. You can get your average pace for the run off you history page, but it won't give you each mile.

The Water Question: 8-12 oz every 15 minutes is a little excessive I think. I usually carry none for any run less than 15 miles. Over 15 on a cold day I can get away with a 20 oz bottle, leaving me a little thirsty at the end, on a hot day I have to refill that bottle at least once (usually at a convenience store!) on runs between 15 and 20. IF it were really hot or I didn't feel especially good I would take water on even a short run. And I take it to the track. I typically drink every two miles because that is how far apart most water stations are and only a couple of ounces at a time, otherwise my stomach gets upset.

Hey everyone! :wave2:

Sunny - so sorry to hear what you're going through! I hope things get better soon! :grouphug:

Mel - I hope you are able to get an appt for your DD soon, and that things go well! Good job on the treadmill! Thanks for complaining about the heat - I ran outside and it was BEAUTIFUL!!! (although I was frozen by the time I finished... but much better than last week's heat!!!) :sunny:

Jodi - so glad you are feeling better today! You asked about the fuel belts - DH and I both have the ones by Fuel Belt. Mine has a place for a water bottle, a flask for gel, a larger zipper in the back (that fits a cell phone nicely), and a small pocket in the front (used it for gel incase I lost my flask). The have pretty much any configuration you could think of, including one with two water bottles, or those with a bunch of little bottles. Our running store carries them, but I also got mine off their website - more options to choose from. We both used them for the marathon and they worked great. Hope that helps!

Liz - I hope your back gets better quickly! Yea for the half coming up - you can do it! :cheer2:

Tiff - Sorry to hear about the cramping. I also do the arms over your head & stretch thing. I've gotten some very strange looks while out on the road, but you gotta do what you gotta do! :thumbsup2 EEK - 6 weeks til Minnie - but I can't wait to see you all!!!

Disneygirl - Hope your last run went well! Good luck at the Columbus!!! Ya'll are going to be awesome!!! :wizard: for great weather!

Dave - good job on your 2.5 miles - that is a great time!

Kim - Hope your long run went well! :thumbsup2

Dana - Your little man is so precious! Glad to hear things are getting better for him - :wizard: for you feeling better as well!

Heather - great job on your negative splits!!! My dog has to socialize with everyone on his walks - we've never even come close to your time! :dog:

Amy - Great job on your run!! You are going to be awesome on your 5K!!!

Claire - Too funny about Cricket! And I'm glad you got your shoes switched. Sorry I can't help on the garmin questions - I never use the intervals, but DH has on occasion - I'll ask him if he has any suggestions.

Krista - I don't have any advice on the IT band, but hugs!!! :grouphug: I hope you are able to run again soon - you have a great attitude about it, though!

Paul - Awesome job on the 20 miler and good luck on your next marathon!!!

Melissa - Great job on your PR today!!!! Way to go!!! And you have to love the free massages! ;)

:goodvibes Lynnda

Duh! I got so excited by how well everyone was doing that I forgot to post my own update... :lmao:

Saturday I ran 8 miles and I had negative splits. The best part was that miles 7 and 8 were in the 11 minute range - Woo-Hoo!!! And I shaved 6 minutes off last week's time. It felt great but my legs were sore this morning!!! Today I went to the pool - I LOVE the cooler weather because it means I can actually get a lane on the weekend! :thumbsup2 I did 90 minutes. After the guard trainees left, I had to pool all to myself - I would have loved to have stayed longer, but my calves were seriously cramping. The workout felt great, though! Tomorrow will be a long bike/short run if my calves are better - otherwise a light bike day.

Hope everyone has a wonderful evening!!!

--Lynnda

Morning Everyone,

Today is going to be a tough one to get going.....I had a hard time sleeping not totally sure why.

I finally heard from my friend who will be doing the goofy challenge with me. I now understand why I haven't heard from her - she had nothing to really report, she's been laid up for awhile because of a foot injury. She's probably going crazy right about now because she is a super competitive person. Hopefully she will read a bit about running now - she thought I was crazy for reading all of the books that I have been reading.

Last night I did end up doing a little bit more training - I ended up doing the Bosu exercise DVD that came with the piece of equipment, along with some of the exercises that my trainer had given to me.

Well, I should start getting ready for the day now. Have a good one everyone!

Jodi

I am still getting used to who's who here - but you guys are all such great inspiration!

I went out Saturday morning to do my 2 miles with hubby's Garmin. I ended up walking/running it in 25:xx. I cut over 1 min. off my time from Thursday.

I also took over DH's mp3 player. Awhile back I gave him a list of "Kristi's running songs" and asked him to start making a playlist for me. I forgot alot of what I asked for. So, I was about hysterical, walking/running in my neighborhood when Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch came on with "Good Vibrations!" I was laughing like a fool around my neighborhood!

Yesterday was my crosstraining day, so I did my Leslie Sansone 3 Mile DVD last night.

I missed checking in and training last week, we have all been sick around here. I have some kind of cold/flu thing and I am still miserable. I am having a really difficult time catching my breath. I am hoping tomorrow I will be able to get through my walk/run.

I am off to read last weeks thread so I know what everyone is up to.

Christy

Good morning everyone!!!

Only 4 days until the Columbus 1/2!! I was up bright and early for my very easy 30 minutes on the elliptical machine (I can remember when that machine was hard at level 3-- this morning I cranked it up to 7, and should have gone higher!!). Yesterday's 5 mile run was less than stellar-- I got a cramp at about 3.5 miles, and ended up walking the rest-- it just wouldn't go away (I guess I should have stopped for a few minutes, but I'm just not that good at doing that). But, for motivation today, since all I can think about is the 1/2 in 4 days, I am listening to my running playlist on my Ipod all day (in fact, I just might do this the rest of the week!)

Jodi-- great job doing some more training (I can never do anything besides a few sit-ups at night!) I always see those Bosu balls at my gym, and want to try them-- I see more and more people trying them out

Kristi-- isn't it fun to have songs like that to run to? I have quite a selection of New Kids on the Block songs myself (don't tell anyone :-)), but Marky Mark sounds like something I may have to add!

Christy-- I hope you feel better!! It seems like everyone is sick around here!!

have a great day everyone!!

Sunny – I am sorry work is so stressful for you. I hope SOMEONE realizes soon that what they are asking for just isn’t possible. In the meantime, DON’T let it affect your health. Good thing you have running for an outlet but don’t overdo. Sending a

Mel – Sending pixiedust: for DD13. How scary. Has she been having symptoms of back pain and such? Poor kid. Teenage years are hard enough without having to deal with health issues, too. How sweet of your DH to be willing to suffer with his allergies to avoid sending the kitty to a new home. I knew I really liked that man! :goodvibes: BTW, are your plans still such that we will miss each other when I am in WDW this weekend?

Jodi – I found a great fanny pack online at the REI outlet. It is made for women and has a place where the water bottle slides in on a slant so it fits nicely at the base of my back, and the pocket was large enough for my camera and cell phone and power bar and Kleenex. It was perfect and I can’t imagine doing a distance event without it, especially since I can’t tolerate a lot of energy products or drinks. It lets me carry everything I need, comfortably.

Lisa -- Nice to see you back and I'm glad to know you are taking a much needed break, but hope to see you here more frequently.

Dave – That was an awesome pace! You have come so far in such a short time – literally and figuratively. Congratulations!

Liz – I am thinking of you so much today as you start your new job and training. I hope it all goes very smoothly and that you enjoy the people you will be working with. I am glad to know you will enjoy the event this weekend regardless of whether you do the entire thing or within the regulated time. I am jealous of all the fun that you and Lily and Molly and everyone else will be having!

DisGirl – Tapering is very unsettling, but you are going to have a GREAT time this weekend! Have fun and good luck!

Dana – You have been through such a rough time, but I hope you are all feeling better soon. Your little man is absolutely adorable! What a cute picture!

Claire – I’m glad you found another pair of shoes, and I hope you find they feel like home, too! I know how it feels to try a new style and I am still trying to bring myself to try the new style I got for a trial run when mine were discontinued. Of course, I also went on line and found my discontinued pair somewhere else and ordered another pair of those, in case the new style doesn’t work out. The new style is U-G-L-Y so I am really going to have to talk myself into them if they are otherwise a good match.

Melissa – Welcome back, sweetie! And congratulations! You sound wonderful! :cool1:

Heather – congrats on your great walk and what wonderful exercise for your furbaby! I am going to have to take Cali out soon, though I really have no faith in her ability to even make it a mile. She is built like me, very short and broad and short legs. She is so outrageously cute, though and I know she’d be wonderful company!

Paul – Good to know the memory of the physical torture dims! DH is planning to do the Goofy in January and I am hoping that is far enough off from the Delaware Marathon that his memory of the torture of a full isn’t too vivid!

Lynnda—Awesome workout! I can’t imagine WANTING to work out longer, but right now I’m hoping for WANTING to workout at all!

Kristi – We’ll have to compare playlists. Sunny gave me some great ideas of some European techno music that really gets me moving so fast that I have to slow myself down. I haven’t heard that version of “Good Vibrations” – will have to check it out on itunes.

Christy – feel better soon! :goodvibes:

I haven’t had time to train at all, since we were in and out of town all weekend. I leave for WDW Thursday night and have a ton of stuff to get done between now and then. I really need the getaway, and I am definitely looking forward to getting in some workouts while in the World. My breathing is marginally better, and my cardiologist assures me it is something I can improve with time and training. My hip still isn’t better but I am going to do lots of stretching before I do an extended workout next time and see if that brings any relief at all. I haven’t even had time to think about it, much less do anything to work through it. AND – it is soooo gorgeous here today (high 50s and sunny!) and it is so hard to be at work when I actually, finally feel like getting outside for a LW. UGH!

Well, back to bury myself in the paper on my desk. Get well and stay well everyone!

Good morning all!!

Just back from Arkansas late last night. What an amazing incredible trip!!! :cool1:

I did manage to get a couple of runs in down south, although I forgot to bring my Garmin charger along so I don't know about distance. I did about 25-30 minutes through some fairly rolling hills.

Heather- THat's a great time running with your dog!! If it were my dog, it would easily take twice that long since A) he's 115 lbs and therefore slow, B) like to hold onto his leash while walking slowing both of us down and C) would constantly need to stop for extended sniff breaks.

Krista-- I hope things improve quickly with your IT band. pixiedust:

Paul-- 20 miles in 3:34 is an awesome time! Great job!

Mel-- Wow!! A PR when you weren't even trying!! I wish I could do that! congrats!

Sunny-- :grouphug: about the work stress. Been there, done that for sure. I hope things calm down for you soon.

Today should be 5-8K for me. Depends on my mood and the weather, though. I STILL need to get a 10K in... hopefully this weekend.

Got to dash for now-
Happy training all!!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

So... Here is the race report

This weekend I ran the Hogeye Marathon in Fayetteville, AR (Sunny calls it fatville). The marathon is actually very small. The 1/2 Marathon is really big b/c it is a part of our "Grand Prix" race series. Sarah, EC, always runs the 1/2 every year b/c she usually places or wins in her age division. This race comes just b/4 the best adventure race in Arkansas. Last yr. I did the 1/2 w/ EC's husband and we considered it a training run for the adventure race. (He is fast too, but ran w/ me to keep me company). This year, EC, Phil and EC's husband are doing the big adventure race together w/ our other team mate john and I am going to be the support crew. Basically all that to explain my running partners for the marathon.

Since we went rock climbing on sat., we missed the expo and packet pick up at the raddison in fay, on sat. We all got up early (6:00am is early for me, especially on a weekend) and got our race packets and numbers. It started out in the low 40's, but was to be warm and sunny, so we were all wearing shorts and long sleeve shirts over short sleeves. Since it was cold, we waited in the lobby of the raddison until just b/4 race start (very nice compared to disney) We all lined up outside just b/4 and someone mumbeled something over a bull horn, then there was a gun pop. OK that must be the start. We walked until we could start running (just a few seconds) The race starts in the downtown square and then winds through the older parts of the town near the U of A campus (for the 1st 4 1/2 miles) It was very hilly and pretty. Phil and EC's man were pretty good about staying w/ me. EC's husband and Phil had not really done much running training. They each did one long run of 10 miles 3 weeks b/4 the race. They both train very hard for the adv. races, so they just don't spend as much time running as they do mt. biking, orienteering and other outdoor activities (they do a ton of aerobic though). They are both very quiet men, so..... They were actually quite funny to run w/ b/c they both love to practice for the adv. races, so they were estimating distances and counting paces to mile markers and other land marks. We ran pretty consistantly to the turnaround pt. I actually had a cramp in my calf at mile 11. I have never cramped on any race ever!!!! I kept running and it just slightly bothered me the rest of the time. We pretty much ran until mile 20, only walking the h2o stations. We did stop for 2 or 3 bathroom breaks. That was the most well supported race I have ever run in regards to hydration! Since the race was a relay and an out and back, EC finished the 1/2 and then after her post race massage, turned around to jog back to the 1/2 t/a pt. again (this was the 6.55 out and the 20.whatever back) After she met me there, we sent the fellows on to run at their desired pace. The last 2 miles are super hilly so I walked the inclines. At about mile 23 sarah and I picked up a young man who was running his 1st marathon. He was sitting on the side of the road! We gave him a pep talk and forced him to stay w/ us till the end. I'm sure he enjoyed being drug around the last few miles by a couple of older ladies!! I did have a sip of beer at the top of the huge hill at 24 mile marker. (I wanted to experience the whole course) We did not make it to get the pig noses, so EC and I used our fingers to make pig noses for the photograher! I think they are going to turn out nicely.

The best parts of the race were 1)spending all that time w/ Phil and knowing that he was out there just for me. 2)Running that young man in to help him finish his 1st marathon. 3)When we got just around the corner from the finish line, the boy was standing on the corner w/ my parents and he was cheering and blowing a whistle (That was THE BEST!!!!)

My time (I checked official time last night) was 4:43.02. Still a PR (but the clock was still reading 4:42 when I came in the chute!!!!!) I placed 4th in my age group and 13th overall. There were 5 in my age group and 16 women overall.

Phil and EC's husband finished in 4:31. They gained 12 minutes on me in the last 6 miles. EC's husband came in 3rd in his age gp.(running by far his slowest marathon ever - i think his best time is 3:45) Phil came in near the middle of his age group. (Obviously a PR as he has never run anything longer than 1 10k race last april!)

I sore this morining, but I'm hoping it's nothing an afternoon nap won't cure. In a little while, I'll post a race pic that my dad took and the elevation profile.

Here is the elevation profile for Hogeye

Mel-great report! And congrats on a PR. Helping out newbies on the course always make a race better.

Paul-yippee, try not to fall into the madness that is taper time.

Lynnda-love love love negative splits, great run

Kristi-only thing better than negative splits is cutting time from your run, awesome (don't you love the garmin/mp3 combo, make me feel like robo runner with all my attachments!)

My 15 went alright. I decided to run with out garmin, I've been feeling too much pressure lately to reach specified paces etc I decided just to run how I felt and enjoy the sunny day. I think I only went 14, took a new route just to make sure I wouldn't make time comparisons. Overall not bad, just a hair short.
