Wk of Mar 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Colleen - rent the bike!!! If you do though, make sure you can get familiar w/ how to shift it b/4 the race. Another option is to put more street like tires on your mt. bike. It will at least take away some of the resistance from the nobby tires. The rented bike will be faster though. There is just no way you can keep up on your mt. bike. It is made for a different purpose

I don't know anything about the lanes b/c I swam outside. You will enjoy the fact that somehow on the 1000yd swim, i managed to engage someone to talk to me (just a little) That is really pathetic isn't it????

I stunk at transition. I was one of the slowest and i did practice a little. I'm thinking that if you don't clip into the bike (don't if you've never done it b/4) that you should use your running shoes. You can buy quick laces at REI or other sporting places where you basically pull a string to tighten your shoes for the bike/run.

Also, you may tape some gels on your top tube of your bike if you think you will need nutrition during the race. tape them by the "lid" so you can just rip the bottom off and eat. Make sure you have a drink cage on the bike (i'm sure you do)

Krista - I've posted several times w/ the intention to tell you that I'm sorry about your knee!! I hope it gets better quickly. It seems like w/ running, I always have a ache or pain somewhere and it is so hard to tell which ones to rest w/ and which ones to run through. I;m sure rest can't hurt though!!

Dave - that is so wonderful that you are ahead of your learn to run class. What a great accomplishment!!! You've already achieved 2 major things in your training: 1)Starting training and being consistant, 2)being ready for the class!!!!

Thanks MelR - you're right. When I started my training my goal was to get myself in shape and my shins ready for my learn to run class. I have definitely met and exceeded that goal. They are also conducting an AP Learn to Run program at the same time - I think I may have even gotten myself ready for that one. It does feel good to start training consistently. I think I have gotten myself over the beginning hump, and it is definitely a habit now that feels great. I find myself really looking forward to my runs, and it's been a long time since I felt that way.

Sounds like your crash was really something. I'm glad you're OK. That must have been really scary, and it must have been some crash if it gave you pause. Good for you for getting up, brushing yourself off, and continuing on. Now get some ice on that booty...

:sad2: I'm sidelined today. My cough got worse after kickboxing yesterday, so I don't want to push it and run today. I know I could make it through the run, but I have to learn to make smart choices. I'm a little more relaxed knowing that I hit the 5K distance on Sunday. All I have to do now is build my hill endurance as I found out yesterday the final .25 mile of the race is uphill.

Dave: Your daughters sound so cute! My 6 year old told me she wants to buy running clothes and running sneakers so she can run a marathon too. OMG...she melted my heart with that! I am so excited that everyone will have their kids and family there! The whole weekend is going to be so inspiring and FUN! :cool1:

:grouphug: THANK YOU to everyone for your support. I was bummed out after telling my mom, sis and dbil about my plans. Fortunately my DH has been awesome and plans to buy a trail bike so he can ride along with me during my long runs. I thought that was sooo sweet! He would love to train with me but has bad knees to begin with...biking is better for him. But at least I'll have company :teeth: The funny thing too is that my sis sent me two articles yesterday about running...she must have felt bad about being negative. I think they are already coming around. :woohoo: I guess I just shocked them with my plans. LOL!

Cam: Wow...Howard is a speed demon! Tell him CONGRATS! And some pixie dust for your DD. In not too many years I'm SURE i'll be dealing with the same things. Two DDs only 2 years apart...life is going to be VERY interesting! :p

Christa: Thanks for posting more pics of the tri!

Liz: Busy is an understatement! WOW!!!!

Krista: THANK YOU for the pd! You are so sweet. And I really hope that knee feels better soon!!! BTW How DARE Stephen watch Illuminations without you!!! Sometimes my DH goes to Orlando for business and then has the NERVE to spend a day at Epcot or eat at Cali Grill!!!! I can totally feel your pain ;)

Hi everyone, I have just read all the posts and all I can say is wow you are all awesome!!!!. What a inspiration you all are.

I am just starting out and would like to do the 1/2 in January. I have no idea what my pace is, right now I am doing alot of stationary biking to help get my cardio level up and I also need to lose weight. DH and I walk every night and right now doing the walk one light post jog the other. I hope this is enough for now.

I would love to join in, not sure if I will be going alone or if DH will be joining me but I am very pumped up for this and would love any suggestions or info you all have for a newbie.

Thanks

Kim

Good morning everyone! :teeth:

Hey, today is my 180 day - I made my ADR's this morning! VERY exciting! :mickeyjum

I did 45 min on the TM @ 3.8 @ 1%. I added in three minutes at 3% and three more minutes at 4. I also set the alarm ten minutes earlier because I need more time working out. I'm adding some stationary bike time to my morning routine. Soon I'm going to have to quit work. I need to train, I just don't have time for a job anymore. :rotfl2:

Melissa - Great pictures! Thanks for sharing. :teeth: OMG are you OK? :wizard: for your booty.

Cam - OMG! That IS tragic! Oh I hate when that happens. I hope the replacement shoe is good for you. Otherwise it's back to the drawing board, eh? Geez, what a pain. Whoo hoo! Howard! :cheer2: Way to go! BTW Cam, I think I am planning on the Minnie next year. Or.....maybe the DL Half. I'll have to see how January goes.

Oh Kevin...you poor thing. I'm glad you were not hurt, but may I just say......OMG you are funny! :lmao:

Mel - I'm discussing resort selection with DH. Thanks for the email. We are very interested. :bitelip:

Krista - Cool tri pics! :thumbsup2 I don't think you look like you are about to die. On the contrary, I think you have a big really cute smile! You go girl! :woohoo:

Nancy - pixiedust: for your knees. Let us know how it goes. I'm thrilled for you that you are seeing results!

Papa Deuce - Baby steps worked great for me! :thumbsup2 You just keep at it. Your planning on the WDW Half? I don't remember. And hey, I always blame the kids for everything. Works very well. :rolleyes1 What happened to that grill thing you had in your signature?

Dave - Holy Cow! You're really smokin'! :cheer2: Excellent! Ha ha ha! Gregory Peck works well for me on the TM. I get so distracted by him that I don't even notice how much time I've been walking. :teeth: I was on the TM by 4:50 this morning. But realize I was IN BED at 8:30pm last night.

Liz - Whoo, you've got your plate full. Don't forget to schedule in some Liz-time.

Amy - I don't understand how anyone could be negative about plans to improve your health. Geez, I don't get it. :rolleyes2 But ignore them and have fun with your DH. Good for him for being supportive.

OK here I go, pretending to work.... :surfweb:

Judy

:wave2: Hi Kim!! Glad to see you made it over to this thread! I think the idea of jogging the light posts is a great way to build your running!

I'd also suggest checking out John Bingham's books....The Courage to Start, No Need For Speed and Marathoning for Mortals. They all contain so much valuable information, as do the resources that Chimera (Mel) posts on the first page of this weekly thread!

:cheer2: Congratulations for making the commitment to a healthier lifestyle! We're really happy to have you with us!!!

Dave, sounds like oyu have some little runners in the making! What fun! I am glad that just about everybody in your family is sharingin your enthusiasim. Any chance you can get your wife on board too?
Liz - No, my DW has tried running in the past, and it's not for her. I've definitely learned not to push either. She'll do what she wants to do. My DW went for a walk while the princesses princess: princess: and I were running. It's great for her to have some time for herself.

I have to finish reading later......

Ok - Did 4.5 miles on Sat, rested Sun, and put in three miles last night. Maintaining between 17 and 18 minute miles...... tried the one minute jog, two minute walk on Sat and only could do it 3.5 rotations instead of 6..... Oh well... I'm going to modify and keep pushing.

Hello to all!

WOW, the thread is kind of quiet today -- and just when I was counting on you guys to keep me awake. I am definitely suffering for having less than 4 hours of sleep last night. How in the world am I going to find the energy to do strength training tonight?

Tomorrow night is a Special Olympics meeting and Thursday night is a dinner event I have planned in honor of my former partner. So, tonight is really my only chance to work out for a while. Although, I guess I should really do some wogging if I am going to do the 5K on Saturday. Hmmmmm,. . . will have to get motivated, and since I've given up (mostly) caffeine, not very likely.

Gooooooooo, Cammie!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:
Wow, you sound incredibly busy. So how did things work out with DD17 last night (this morning)? What time did she end up getting in? I must admit, I don't think I could do that with my girls (let them go out driving at 11:30pm), but then again it's easy for me to say that now when they are 5 and 8.

Here's some more cheering to get you motivated for your workout. You can do it, you can do it... When are you heading to WDW for your DDs parade?

Whew - we biked and biked and biked today. Yes, of course I fell today too. It was a much more impressive looking fall than Sunday's fall, but I didn't really get banged up too badly. Today I was scared to ride this little narrow area, and i tried to put my foot down. Unfortunately, there was a creek there where my foot tried to go. My bike fell, and stopped and I kept going down the wash. I was yelling the whole way and phil was watching me. It really didn't hurt, but I would say it was quite the impressive fall by anyone's standards! I wish I had a picture of it to show, it would certaintly garner lots 'o laughs!

I am supposed to go on a short jog this evening. I'm hoping it is short and slow!!!

Dave -- Your post had me :lmao: Did you think we LET her go driving? Oh, no, not by a longshot. Let's just put it this way. As of this moment, DD17 does not "own a car". Havent' quite decided yet the consequences for the latest stupid-teen-trick, but Howard has decreed there will be no Europe trip this summer. DD17 is going to have to do some fast-talking and some clean walking and I am STILL reluctant to leave her to her own devices for 15 days in 5 foreign countries. This may be the wakeup call she seems to need. SHE'S under stress? She has NO IDEA!

BTW, her marching band found out today they are doing the spectromagic parade on Friday, 3/31 -- she was soooooo excited that she left me one of those giggly little girl voicemails where you could just hear the exuberance in her voice. It is times like that that I think we may have raised her well. Until I think of a midnight ride. Then -- all bets are off and I'd swear I should have given her to the gypsies. She looks like one, all big brown eyes and jet black hair. Yeah, she'd pass. Can't quite remember why we passed up that offer? ;)

Melissa -- I am seriously worried about you. Is there any chance at all that you have labyrinthitis or a sinus or ear infection? Be careful, sweetie. It seems to me you should have still been recovering from your TWO RACES this past weekend. Yeah, like in a mattress-wallpapered room! :teeth:

Mel-my tri is Memorial Day, wanna come join me??? I think I've lost my training buddy so I'm on my own again. It is a very short tri so you would have no problems completing it :teeth:

Cam- :wizard: for you!!!! Good luck getting everything in & getting some sleep. Dont worry she'll grow out of it. From the time I turned 13 me & my mom were fighting until I was about 19. Now we are doing 1/2 marathons & 15k's together. :goodvibes

Kim-Welcome!!!! This is a great group & we're glad to have you. :cool1:

Judy-I know what you mean. Who has time for real life when we have so much training & WDW planning to do :rotfl2:

Amy-I'm with you. This sinus crud still has me on the sidelines. I'm hoping to get my walk & ST in tomorrow. Hope you get better too!

Colleen-on the tri I'm doing you swim up one lane then have to go under the rope & swim down the other & you do have to touch the wall. I am thinking that the whole going under the rope thing is really going to slow me down. I am planning on wearing my running shoes for the bike because DH wont let me get clipless pedals yet. (I am coordinatedly challenged) I haven't even used the toe cages yet :rotfl: And as long as you are swimming of your own accord they dont care what stroke you do. I would rent the road bike if you can & also see if you can rent it a little beforehand to practice on it. They ride alot different than a mtn bike. Good luck! (you could come to Nashville & do the tri with me Memorial day, Nashville has a lot of good shopping & eating :) )

MelR- :wizard: :wizard: Good luck healing that booty!

Krista-I'm mad at Stephen too!!! How dare he leave me behind pirate: (that's my mean face)

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I wish I could claim ear infection, but it's just mountain biking. I pretty much have a trend of falling whenever I go!! I am taking a break from mt. biking until my bruises have healed! Next week is spring break anyway, so the boy has no preschool. The gals will probably try to do an easy mt. bike trail while the kids play in the park, but nothing hard core, so i should be able to remain upright!

I'm hoping to be in shape to do the half. TONS of work to do. Still 84 pounds to go, but I'm sure the walking / jogging will help a lot.

I took my cookshack smoker ( Yikes! "grill thing" :teeth: ) off just vecause I was bored with it being there. Rest assured it still gets a whole lot of use. :thumbsup2

After great wogs Thur & Fri, Sun morning wasn't so good. I'm definitely an evening runner, not a morning one. Think they'll reschedule the Minnie for me? Tips on convincing my body that it's really not as early as it thinks?

Christa: Awesome job on your tri!

Krista: Bummer on the knee, and I can't believe DH went to WDW, or even NEAR WDW without you! How DARE he?

AmyBeth: So sorry your family isn't supportive. That's why we're here. Fortunately, DH and DD don't think I'm crazy, but I think my inlaws are skeptical. I'm keeping it a secret from my coworkers till closer to the Minnie just so they can't stare at me like I've lost my mind.

CarolA, PapaDeuce, Kareneast, Kim: Welcome! I've only been on this thread for a few weeks, but the encouragement is priceless.

Cam: I DREAD what you're going through with DD. Mine is 15 and just got her permit last week. So far she's terrified to drive, but she wants to be out with her friends every night of the weekend. DH doesn't understand. And great news about her band getting to play at Spectromagic - my DD would absolutely die if her band could do that!

Jackie

Sunny - where are you today????? I sure hope you are not so focused on work that you forget the more important priorities of chatting it up w/ us!!

I had my knee injections this afternoon. Good news - they were no where near as painful as last week, and the DR was really encouraged with the relief I have already been getting. I hope the improvements will continue.

MelR - hope you can stay upriight for a while! Sounds like yu have had some pretty dangerous falls and are lucky to have come out with just bruises.

MouseDogMom - I'm with you on being an evening runner, or should I say wogger? I wish I could be a morning person but I definitely am not!

Judy - I can not imagine being up and on the treadmill at 4:50 AM! :earseek: Unless I am still up at that hour! You are really doing great. I have noticed a great deal of improvement in what you have been doing! :cheer2:

Cam - good luck with your DD. I don't have kids but you should have seen me when I could not find one of my cats :cat: today after my DR appt! Turns out she was hiding in the corner of the den. Awesome, though, that her band will be in Spectro. Wish we could be there to see her. Sat is quite possible though.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Welcome Kim/Hockeychic :welcome: Great to have you here. You are doing great with the light post to light post runs. I just joined this TEAM a couple of months ago. I started out walking, mixed in a little running, and I started out with the alternating light posts too. Now I'm running (slowly) for 20-30 min straight. This group has been such an inspiration for me, and have really kept me going. I'm so excited to keep the adventure up until the marathon this year.

I had another good workout yesterday. I did 2.4 miles in 30 min on the treadmill - that includes the warmup and cool down periods. However, I did 2 solid miles in the middle at 12 mpm pace!! Whoo hoo, :cool1:, my breathing has been feeling really relaxed and easy. If it were up to my respiration, I think I could go faster, but I still feel some tenderness in my lower legs - so I don't want to ramp it up too much.

So I must admit, my treadmill runs have been going well, but whenever I head out on the roads my legs feel the pounding instantly. It surprises me because I've been working really hard on strengthening my shins, stretching my calves, etc. Monday night when I did the little run around the block with my princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:, I could feel it in my shins. Do you all do anything special to get your legs ready for running on the roads?

Hi everyone. I just got finished reading everyones posts on this thread. I introduced myself almost a month ago (and then had computer problems and I am using a borrowed laptop now and trying to get cought up.) Congrats on everyone who did races. They all sound exciting!!

Krista and Nancy - hope your knees heal up.

Amy - sorry about family. Dont let them get you down. You have the support of the WISH board and you can do it.

Mel - hope you heal up from your recent fall. Take it easy so you don't reinjure your self.

Kim/Hockeychick - welcome - I myself just started (I guess you would call it wogging) a month ago. I used to be a couch potato and now I just signed myself up for a 5k run to benefit Juvenille Diabetes in 24 days. And I originally started with the Race for the Taste 10k in mind but now decided to do the Minnie 5k and now even sooner the local run. So stick with it and you can do it.

Anyone else I forgot I appologize but I really need to get off this computer and get ready for work. TTYL
