Wk of June 8 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi guys! Just checking in. It has been awhile. I hope everyone is doing well! We had a great trip at AKV. Toy Story Midway Mania is sooo much fun! :thumbsup2 We went Memorial Day week and the crowds weren't too bad except for Sunday, weather rocked - not too hot and not the first drop of rain. :cool1:

It has been so hot at home. Poor DH is not coping and is getting headaches trying to run in this heat. I have been busy trying to get things in order and spend as much time as I can with my girls - been going to the pool alot. My surgery is next week. I'm excited, but scared. At pre-op I was told I couldn't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk for four weeks! :scared1: I also can't drive for three weeks. I have posted up on my fridge when I should be able to run again and have already planned out my Donald training, though. :hyper:

Left quad is still giving me some issues. I'm really hoping taking off two months after surgery is gonna help finally mend it.

Peachtree packet came today. I'm really sad I won't be able to run it. DH is gonna give my number to a friend so he can have someone to run with. We were both put in group two. Next year I'm sure he'll make group one so I guess if I get in next year we'll be running apart.

Miss you guys, but life is pretty much crazy these days.

Best wishes to all "WISHers"! :goodvibes

Shan - Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I'm sure being so restricted in what you can do (for a time) will be difficult, but the long term results will be worth it. pixiedust: pixiedust:

Shan - Good luck with the surgery.

Judy - when I got to your post and saw Mist lying down, darn near gave me a heart attack! :scared1: I though something had happened. Glad to know she's just not a big party animal ;) You'll have to keep her birthday parties a little on the tamer side from now on :)

Jeff - great pics!

Steve - Don't you Steelers fans know better than to run in the heat?! ;)

Did more ab work today. Tomorrow is an off day (have a retirmement party to go to after work).

Happy training to all!

Terri

Only my second week on this thread, so I apologize that I can't quite keep up with everyone's posts yet! Anyway, didn't get in a workout on Sunday - spent most of the day cleaning the house...I kept waiting for the "Cleaning Fairy" to show up and do it, but that never happened!

Did 3 miles on the TM last night - even though it stays pretty cool down there, it was still humid, which made it a little tougher. The plan for tonight is Pilates.

This morning's effort:

Miles: 3
Time: 28:06
Pace: 9:22

I got out "before the heat"... whatever that means. It was close to 80 and REALLY, REALLY humid already at 6:15 AM this morning. :headache:

I hope everyone is enjoying their Tuesday! Happy training!

Howard

OK if melting is XT then I am doing great on my training. :faint: I took today as a rest day because I need it. Looking forward to some t-storms tonight to cool things off.

Terri - OMG I'm sorry! No, no, she's just an old lady party animal who loves her naps. She gets that from her momma! :lmao:

Hi everyone! I'm back from WDW. I didn't run there at all, but I kept my pedometer on until the battery died and I had over 20k steps each day. Over 21k most days. It was a great time. I hope to get to the gym this week since we don't have central air at home and are waiting for DBF's step father to purchase his own %()#$* a/c. I don't mind them living with us since they live in the in-law apartment, but I'm sick of giving them everything! He's got it easy paying only $500 per month plus utilities when he would have to pay 800-1000 per month in an apartment complex and not even have a yard.

Anyways... Without the a/c in the room with the treadmill, my exercises at home are limited. Hopefully it will get straightened out, or I'll need to find my Bally's card. I will have to restart W2 though.

Okay, I thought the packing was supposed to be the time-consuming part of moving? :confused3 I'm so far behind since moving that I'm just going to try to catch up with this week's posts.

Mel: Thanks for the links. Loved the idea of master's awards by number of events. That seems like it would be very motivating. DOOD and I have limited our events this year for economic reasons. Cutting back on the travel, too, unless it's on foot or by bike. (I hear Aloha Jeff buzzing in my ear.)

Cecilia: Wow, I can't believe how hot it is in your area. It's definitely makes sense to become a morning lark. Oh, and congrats on being a Phidippides gold candidate. How's your tri training coming--is that part of the reason for stepping up your XT?

Kira: I need to go back and reread last week's posts, but  sound in order for you and DD.

Julie: Congrats on your run in the heat. I think you should be very proud of yourself, as that's no small feat. (Me, weather wimp. 'Nuff said?)

Kim: Great news on the walking, losing weight, and running consistently. I think your pace is terrific--who knows, we could pace each other at a future race. I hope you continue to keep us updated here as to what's going on.

Tracy: Add me to the list of people who felt for Big Brown. At least his DLF didn't appear to be from injury. And yeah for Kasey, of whom you're a big fan, right? :cool1: for your 7 miles, but you know what I really celebrate? No, not the ice bath--even if it is hot enough to almost make one sound good. That recovery drink of yours. Dairy + chocolate. Mmmmm...:cloud9: Btw, are you training for an upcoming event or is this DL 1/2 training?

Vic: That mowing--sounds like a workout and a challeng in the heat. There should be a lawn-maintenance event with bling you could sign up for, don't you think?

Kathy: I'll need to check out the new thread. In the meantime, congrats to your DD and the whole family! Do you get a special, discounted consultation fee as a family member? Or do your payments contribute to repaying the medical-education bills? :lmao:

Judy:  and carrots for Mist. And WTG on your LR (counts in my book) and TM work. I might want to move into your basement if the heat continues, even though you've dropped the hint that relief might be headed your way. (Might have missed us.)

CarolA: Good luck with the desktop situation. I'm betting your computer died of heat exhaustion, since the head seems to be this week's theme for many of us.

Shaily: Wow, your strength training routine sounds rigorous. Given your description of your running, swimming, and other WOs I'd say, yeah, you enjoy challenging yourself. I'm so impressed with your undertaking swimming "lessons" and think you've definitely got the will to succeed.

Terri: I just love that you were cycling in tandem with the Pro cycling championship. Almost like being there, huh? But since when is spinning "a break" from mowing, especially if it's followed by core work?

Steve: Wow, I'm glad you didn't experience really bad repercussions from your afternoon run, and that you were aware enough to walk at the end, shower, and take it easy. It's a good warning for us all. And you need to be in tip-top condition, as it sounds like you've a very busy social summer ahead of you with weddings, showers, and family visits. Not to mention Carter's pending, permanent "visit." Good thing you're an endurance athlete!

Howard: Great XT and getting out there before it gets really hot (relatively speaking). And nice job trying to keep Steve in line. (Gotta watch out for that one, you know. ;) )

Krista: Sounds like you have your hands full. Good practice for Carter's future as a "terrible toddler"? :rotfl2: (Trying to make a Steeler ref, but am afraid that it is too obscure.)

Lily: I'm with you--just getting the steps in whenever I'm outside. (Which is minimal these days as I'm willing to use the TM if I'm not up early enough.)

Aloha Jeff: It sounds as if you had a great time camping, and the peach cobbler sounds delicious. I don't remember making anything like that in the Girl Scouts. (Oh, wait...I got kicked out of Brownies.... Geez, if I'd known what good food was in store for me, I would have tried to be reinstated.) Tell Mooshu we're proud of her! Oh, and I got the Chi Running DVD. I'll watch it and send it on--Thanks! :thumbsup2

Shan: I can't believe your surgery is coming up so fast! No more than a gallon of milk, that's it? :scared1: I can't imagine being restricted like that--and the no-driving can be a pain. It'll all be worth it, though! And you'll have plenty of time to plan your January trip, now that you've mapped out your Donald training! :woohoo: In the meantime, PD for your left quad.

Shannon: Hey, I'm impressed that you cleaned house, did 3 miles, and have Pilates on the schedule, especially in this heat. Btw, if you do happen to spot the Cleaning Fairy ask her what I need to put under my pillow to ensure a visit.

MLA: Glad you had a great time at WDW! And were very active, too. Hopefully your DSF will get an a/c soon, although if it's anything like here there's been quite a run on them. (Not sure where Eagleville is in PA, but I know it's hot all over the state.

As for me: My schedule's been all messed up since last week's move and this weekend's attempt to unpack. Such a small change, you wouldn't think it would interrupt my routines that much. But it has. I'm finally getting back in the swing of things here. After a week of XT, unexpected rest days, and one run, I'm just starting to get back on a regular schedule. My moving bruises are healing--does anyone else get these--and I'm no longer sore in strange places. (Just the familiar ones.) I did a short 3-miler yesterday on the TM because I didn't get up early enough to avoid the full-on heat (sleeping schedule is still off, so I'm working out at odd hours. I need to get back into the a.m. groove).

But my new place only has one small a/c unit, not enough to keep me sane. So I'll be doing that annoying summer-movie-watching thing: picking a moving based on start time and location. Tonight's choice is Young at Heart. It's a mere .6 miles from home. :cool1: That's worth the walk, don't you think?

Hi all! I'd like to join in the fun here. Been lurking for a bit with an occasional post but I'd love some motivation and comraderie, which I can tell y'all have loads of! Hope to get to know some folks over time.

I ran a half marathon on Saturday - Hospital Hill in Kansas City. I posted a report in the race report thread. It was a really good race and I'm so glad I did it - I was pretty nervous. I finished in 2:35, which I was thrilled with, considering it's a tough, hilly course and it was 80 degrees at 4:30 am. Mid-80's & humid by race time at 7 - yucko. My shirt was a hit though - it says "In my dreams I am a Kenyan." Even better considering the top 2 men and women were all 4 Kenyans!

Although now that I'm here, I have to report I've done nothing in the training realm since then. Unless drinking a few margaritas counts? ;) Eh, I figured a few days off was a good idea. I may try a short easy run this evening and then get back to it.

Actually, that's a question I have - after a long race, what level of training do most of you keep up? I'm not sure what race I have planned next - probably a 5k here & there throughout the summer, but I don't know that I'll do another half until the fall. Do I keep up long runs on the weekends? Or back off a bit for a few months and then kick it back up?

Oh yeah, I posted in my race report that I am obsessed with Garmins now - I only vaguely knew much about them but the pace group leaders in the race used them and they were AWESOME! They had the 405's. After 2 days of compulsively researching and price-checking, I finally ordered a 305. I'm so excited! I almost just got the 205 but for $30 more, I figured the 305 was worth it. Plus I like red better anyway.

That's it for me - hope to be around a lot more!

Deekaypee, Eagleville is 10 minutes west of King of Prussia and 30 minutes west of Philly. I try not to complain too much about giving stuff to DSF since I make at least 2x what he does, but he also doesn't have a mortgage or student loans like me, just a car payment. Both the ACs that we have are ones that I've had for years. I was kind of surprised when DBF suggested telling his dad to go out and get his own. We had to trash the monstroscity that cooled out living room last year when we got new windows since it wouldn't fit/wasn't energy star/spit black stuff everywhere. It looks like I won't even make it to karate tonight eith since I'm still working!

FatElvis - the shirt sounds hilarious!

Thanks again everyone for your good wishes about my daughter. I'm in a good place about it. She took her medication for the first time on Sunday, and so far so good - none of the nasty intestinal side effects that the doctor mentioned!

I took it easy after my 10K on Saturday, and gave myself two full rest days. However, my training for the Philadelphia Distance Run in September actually starts this week, which is really hard to believe. No more slacking! So I got myself out there this morning despite the nasty heat, and did an easy 3 miles. I picked a route that was really well shaded and did OK. Hopefully this weather will break tonight and we'll get back to our regularly scheduled June weather!

Seeing as I have central air, I really can't use the heat as an excuse on the cleaning or the pilates (I do my pilates DVD in the family room). The basement, where the TM is, is not air conditioned, but at least it stays cooler down there anyway...

I wonder if the Tag Fairy knows the Cleaning Fairy??? Maybe she could put in a good word for us!

Deb,

Kicked out of Brownies, you must have been really bad! Here's last week's trial baking effort at home, before we went to camp. You may have missed the photo in last weeks posts. The photo doesn't do the peach cobbler any justice. Believe me, it was delicious!

We're probably going to do "coffee can" ice cream next year to go with the dutch oven dessert. You put the ingredients in a ziplock bag and place in can, fill can with ice, a little water, and rock salt, cover. Then roll the can back and forth for about 30 minutes to get soft serve ice cream.

Let me know if the dvd works in your dvd player. I tried it out on my computer dvd and it played, but I never checked it on the regular dvd that is hooked up to my tv.

Kira - lots of  for your daughter!

We are back from a short FL trip. We did manage to visit Sea World and Universal. I can safely say I can wait another 10+ years to go to either of those again. They are nice enough parks, I guess we are just hopeless Disney freaks! We did hit Boma for breakfast before flying home though. Since when do I pay $68 for breakfast for 2 adults and a child and not think twice about it? :rotfl:

This morning's effort:

Miles: 5
Time: 47:12
Pace: 9:26

My splits:

9:10
9:34
9:13
9:55
9:21

I've decided to try to think of one thing each day that I like about running outside.

Today's is: I like running outside and turning up my Ipod to drown out the sound of the cars passing by.

I have been eating better and working on the training program for the Marine Corps Marathon. I can see it on the scale. I have lost about 9 pounds since Minnie weekend. I have a long way to go, but this is only my second full week of training.

Happy training!

Howard

Yeah, that's not dangerous at all. :thumbsup2 Congrats on the eating healthier and the weight loss! I need you to show me how to do that. That is NOT one of my strong points.

Steve

Shan Good luck on the surgery. We'll be keeping you in our thoughts that all goes well.

mla1977 20 thousand steps!! I know that we do a lot of walking at Disney, but that is phenomenal. Has to count for something!

Debra "Sore in strange places" Does that mean you're not sore when you're at home? or at the grocery store? or gas station? Just the "strange" places? ;)

Howard Way to go on the training--only don't drown out the cars so much that you don't hear them sneaking up on you! (Said in a very maternal voice)

Kristi Only at Disney would I think of spending that much for breakfast. Now chocolate on the other hand----I would pay lots and lots for good chocolate anywhere!

Jeff Peach cobbler looks yummy and, of course, now that you have mentioned ice cream I'm sure that will wake up a few WISHers (Is it quiet around here this week, or does it just seem that way to me?)

As for me In the pool today, which I have been dreading for no good reason. Still working on the motivation thing and finding the next thing to train for. Gotta have a carrot on a stick for me. Might try to find some little 4th of July thing back east.

Maura

It seems like things have been so quiet around here lately....

I'm keeping busy as per usual. I got my 12 miler in on Sunday during a rare window of sunshine and it went pretty well. I think I'm all set for the Footstock Half Marathon this Saturday! Monday was hot yoga, then yesterday was boot camp - in the rain - and swimming. I really wanted to test out my swimming skills so I could make a decision about entering my first tri. The swim session went well, so this morning I registered for the Strathmore Women's Triathlon on August 10th!

It's so quiet around here, I think I heard Jaq and Gus from Cinderella running around the kitchen. :rotfl2:

I slugged out a 5 miler in the 88 degree heat yesterday. Took it easy since I have my Hibiscus Half marathon on Sunday, Father's day.

Happy King Kamehameha Day everyone, hope you're enjoying your day off today like me. :lmao: We're likely headed for the hills, to do some hiking.

Good training reports from those of you logging the miles. :thumbsup2
