Wk of June 3--WISH Walking/Running Club

Dave, I'll make this short, sweet, and to the point. You only live once.

Take care.

HonnieBee, Queen Judy:snooty: of "YARC". If you have the surgery your loyal subjects will push you in a, royal throne, weelchair at the ToT if necessary.

This is Dave "YARC" training logic:

You are less likely to be injured going up hill. So when I do my training walks I go hard up the hills and recover on the flats. That way I get my strength workoput and my speed intervals with less chance of injury. My goal is to arrive at the Senior Olympics at the end of the month healthy and uninjured.

My workout was 4 miles on the hills in 49:51, with the last mile mostly up hill in 11:51. It was hot this morning but a little playing in the pool fixed that.

I had a great lunch, I stopped and got some pre cooked, grilled, chicken breast and micro-wave brown rice at the market on the way home. YUMMY.

Have a great day y'all, find something to smile about. Do it or I'll walk by your house wearing a green gumby suit!

Dave:hippie: "YARC"

Megan--Correction: you ARE an athlete. You didn't USED to be one, you are one.

Dave...I hope that everything works out!!

Krista...The police officers were pretty understanding. In fact, one said he didn't make copies of his tax papers, but will from now on!!!

Judy...I am so sorry to hear that your royal foot is painful!!

Will post a little later after I get my wo in.

I am reading everyone's post and growing scared at the same time. I would love to try the Disney half marathon soon but am scared to death. I have no idea where to even start and after reading about yous running for 3-5 miles a day, that scares me, loo. I want to walk the half marathon- what are some good tips for a beginner???? I seen one on website that beginners should start by walking 3 miles the first day, yea right 3 miles!!!

LG, don't get scared.

Everybody here is at different levels, but we all started somewhere. :thumbsup2

I started post ACL replacement surgery with 20 min on the TM at 2.5. That was in November of 2005. I just kept adding time and speed and distance until I was at 45 min 4 days a week at 3.8, then doing a L/R outside on Saturdays. I did nothing - NOTHING - at all even remotely athletic prior to that.

And, if I may say so myself...my goal for the Half was to stay one step ahead of the sweepers. I did that with 15 min to spare. :woohoo:

Don't get intimidated by what some of the Speed Demons and Olympic caliber athletes on this board do. Not all of us are RW cover material. Many of us are Penguins and we do just fine, thank you very much. :goodvibes

Leana- that was very moving about your mother, I got goose bumps! I think it's great that she now has something to help her work through her grief. I was just reading in RW about the psychiatrist (or something like that) that runs with his patients. It was interesting. I hope she keeps going!

Dave- I understand about the training aspect/time also! And I had to ask the kids (the only one who cares in DD11) and they were all supportive. I let them know it would just be a quick trip for the 1/2. I feel for you!

Training: I did 3.4 miles yesterday, and 5.2 (Long one) today. I wanted to do 5.5 total today, but just couldn't get it done. Why? I had to do it on the TM, as the wind is about 50 mph! NO JOKE! Yesterday, they clocked 82 mph near here! That's a category 1 hurricane!

Best wishes for everybody's training!

LusterGirl - MfM (Marathoning for Mortals by John "the Penguin" Bingham) highley recommends that you start by "moving" for 30 minutes, 3 times a week. It recommends that you do this fro a year before you start the 16 week half training program. Now, many of us skipped teh year, or at lesat shortened it a lot. The 16 week run the half program starts iwth IIRC 2, 30 min runs during the week and 2 30 min XT sessions, plus a long run of 2 miles. The walk program shoul deb very similar. So, if I were you , I would put together a program that would build you up to something like 45 min walks twice a week and a 5 mile LR. What are you doing now? Do you think you could build up to that by late sept, early Oct? If so, you should be ok distance wise. As for speed, though, it depends on wher you start if you'd have enough time to get there by Janaury. JMO, but I would start now and do some 5Ks this summer and maybe 5 and 10 Ks next year to gear up for Jan 09. I don't know you, though. So, if you think you can prepare for 08, don't let me stop you. Too much too soon can lead to injuries, though.

Meghan - If I'm reading correctly, you still ive with your parents. Most people here know tha tI love mine to death. However, I coudl not live with them. And to live with them and train would be even worse. Dn't let your mom get you down. I'm sure she means well, but I understand your frustration too. Only you know what's right fo ryou, though!

lustergirl, I agree with Judy. Start where you are. If you can walk 10 or 15 minutes a day, then do just that. I started walking for exercise about 3 1/2 years ago, and I started with maybe a mile a day, and that felt like a major accomplishment. Over time, I worked my way up to 3 miles, then more, and now I've walked 3 half-marathons. It takes time, but you can do it if you set your mind to it. If I've learned anything from the past few years, it's that with the right amount of motivation and some discipline, I can do things I never would've thought possible. If I can do it, anyone can. Be patient with yourself, and don't worry about how fast others seem. If it's something you want to pursue, I say go for it! (And wtpclc is right; maybe shooting for 2009 is a good idea.)

Good luck! :)

Peggy

Good aftenoon team!!! Jeezzz work is just crazy lately....no time for posting...:scared1:

Laurie yaaaa for POP, there are alot of us staying there

Mel Good luck with your new clinic. I am glad all worked out for you and your family with your training

Dave So sorry you aren't getting the support you deserve with your running. Does DW like walking, running or bike riding?? Maybe she could join you on some of the training???

Cam Sounds like a busy weekend...enjoy!!!

Krista I love Sweatin to the oldies...however when I hear those songs I think I should be exercising....:rotfl:

Heather Welcome back!!!

Leane Glad your mom found something to help her through her grief and it will make her healthier as well.

Judy:wizard: :wizard: PD for your foot

Lustergirl Don't be scared, just start with what you are comfortable with. I was so scared when I started to train for the Minnie and never thought I would finish on time well I was 23 mins ahead of the cut off of 2:30.

Well have a 3K walk again tonight, and DD has her sports banquet at school so I will get out after she leaves incase she has a crisis with hair, make up...dress something...you never know with a 14 year old.

Have a great rest of the day all.

Kim

Megan - I hope things work out for you with the full in January! How frustrating. If you need some company on the full, I may be up for it. Warning - I will be slow since I'm going Goofy! :goofy:

Hellooooo Team WISH...

It took me forever to catch up on the posts today. WOW, lots of things happening.

DH Paul had his knee surgery this morning. Everything went well. He is resting now. The doctor said this type of surgery is mostly done on people in their 50-60's and he is in his 30's!! They are still planning to do the other knee in a couple of months.

Judy - Oh I have those darn hammer toes also. I wish you luck and hope you heal super quick if you decide to get it done. I am waiting until the last possible date to have mine done. So far the roomy toe area in my shoes have helped me out.

Dave - Oh dear. I hope your wife sees how important the races are to your training. They provide so much motivation and keep you going. I know my kids would never allow us to do a solo trip, but they are at that age. I think as the kids get older, they can understand the reasoning more. GOOD LUCK!!

Mel - I did speed work last night also.

Speaking of which... yes I attempting speed work last night. Nothing spectacular and I have no clue how fast my intervals were. I used the indoor track and did 2 laps at normal speed, 2 laps fast, 2 laps normal, 1 lap walk.... then started it all over again. I was pooped after 30 minutes of that.

Today will most likely be a rest day for me, unless you can count waiting on DH hand and foot because he is perched in front of the TV!

Hanging low in taper mode but I had to chime in to give :grouphug: to Dave. I hope it all works out for you guys and DW supports you.

Judy - I have one toe sewn to the other on my left foot:confused3 ! I hope you get it all fixed up quickly.

Helen - Great to see you!!

I have my last 8 mile LR on Saturday before I leave for Grandma's next Friday.
This taper has me feeling beat for some reason. It might just be those darn seasonal allergies. My goal is heavy resting for the next week:cool1: .

Happy training and racing to all this weekend:woohoo: .

Hi all!!

Citrus Swirl Fans-- What?!?! They changed the recipe?!?! NO!!!! We must take up the challenge and band together... letter writing campaigns, protests, chain ourselves to one of Aladdin's Royal Carpets until they change it back!! (Ok, in all seriousness, the fact that they changed the recipe stinks. :headache: )

Helen-- Nice to see you!!

Kim-- Cool, thanks for the info. I did a better Google search and it looks like it's on CTV at 7:30. Hopefully our timing will work out so that I can see it.

Judy-- OK, pulling a Kevin it is. (Although.... there was the unfortunate "Save the Garmin" incident a couple years ago... but people would be far less likely to do that....... )

Krista-- Yep, that's totally what Captain does too. And, of course, we have houseguests this weekend. :rolleyes1 Thankfully they've all been here before and understand.....

Lustergirl-- Deep breath. Everyone has sat right where you are right now and I promise, everyone has been overwhelmed at first. Those miles seem SO LONG at the beginning. Start small and work your way up-- You'll make it!! And don't worry about the super-fast folks. It's really all relative. I have had people remark on my "speedy-ness" on here before, but I really don't feel all that speedy. My brother, a sophmore in high school, won the regional championship in the two mile-- in 9:58. :faint: So long as you are getting out there, you are doing more than most people. :thumbsup2

Dave-- I read your post this morning and really had to think about a response. It may sound like a bit of pop psychology, but I guess I sort of feel like when people actively discourage someone for pursuing a positive goal (be it college or running a marathon or whatever), it has less to do with you and more to do with them. From reading your posts over the past year, it sounds like you have done a really good job of scheduling your running so it doesn't interfere with family time, so it's suprising. From my own personal experience, I went through a period where I would catch myself doing that all the time. What I eventually realized is that I had a terrible case of jealousy/envy. These were all people that were setting big goals and accomplishing big things and I was just "there." It was a wakeup call for me when I realized that. So, to make a long story short, could it be less about the family time issue and more about DW wanting or needing a goal/hobby? Neither judging nor prying, just want to see you two come to a consensus where you're both happy. And from someone not quite married and with no kids, feel free to disregard this entirely. :) I hope things work out.

I will need all the motivation in the world to get out there today.... hot and windy and I'm cranky ;) Oh well, maybe it'll turn my day around if I get my miles in.... :thumbsup2

Kevin :earsboy:

Carrie-I am indeed living at home till one of three things happen... 1. I win the lottery and in that case the YARC entry in the full is on me. 2. Prices for apartments in Boston drop. (Unlikely) or 3. My boyfriend and I get married. (Most likely of the three.) I do love my parents dearly and my dad is great to have around because he knows something like this takes work. I think at times my mom just doesn't realize that I can't just go out increase miles and run fast with no build up. I also hate that she doesn't let me eat things she shouldn't be eating either. She's hard on me but I'm staying focused and doing what I need to do.

Lena-I've made up my mind to run it so I guess it is working out. I'd be happy to have you as a running partner no matter your pace. It'll be my first full so I'm looking to just get it done.

lustergirl-Carrie has great advice. A big part of it is listening to your body and know what you can handle. I'd also suggest that you get in the car and drive 3 miles. I think at times these distances seem further then they really are. When I mapped out a run I was so shocked to see how small a route it was to do 1 mile. At times it's just a mental block that keeps us from trying.

Okay what are citrius swirls???? I'm not a dole whip fan so maybe this is my treat.

thanks everyone!! I have started walking though- about 20 mintues a day during lunchtime covering about a mile I would say. I started back to exercising at the center so I know that these extra unwanted pounds coming off will help me even better. I will take it slow, try to get into some marathons around here first then shoot for disney half marathan in Jan 2009. I will keep you guys posted though. If I can work myself upto that pace it would be just awesome!! I look forward to being able to walk in the disney marathon and the time will come quickly- just you watch!!

Greetings Everyone:

I just wanted to stop in and say thanks again for everyone's support. It's great being a member of a team, and I really appreciate all the good WISHes everyone's been sending my way today. I realize other people here have a lot more going on in their lives than their wive's not fully supporting their wanting to run a marathon. So I appreciate you taking the time to indulge me for part of the day. Dinner and a movie with DW tonight, and I'll let you know how it all goes.

I think you certainly have time to be ready to walk the 1/2 by January of 2008. You're not looking to place - you're looking to finish . . . . right? I did it a couple of years ago, never having run or walked for endurance before. I didn't start training until late August. And I am very Pooh-ish.
