Wk of June 29 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Greeting Race Team -

I have nothing to report except I am crispy from running at the track Saturday morning and not heeding the warning on my meds that say I will be sensitive to sunlight. :headache: I managed two and a half of the four miles I had planned. It was just WAY too hot. :scared: I guess it's good I stopped when I did. I would have been totally fried if I did the full four.

Mel

State Income tax is deductible from Federal Income taxes, well at least in theory.

The Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) passed by congress in 1969 to catch a handful of millionaires who paid no federal tax due to large deductions, eliminates the deductability of state income taxes for lots of us who live in high tax states like Taxachussetts. Above threshholds the AMT eliminates deductibility of state income taxes, local property taxes, and personal exemptions as well. This occurs now because the geniuses who passes the AMT in 1969 "forgot" to index it for inflation, so every year more and more people who work for a living and live in high tax states or have lots of kids and exemptions get kicked into the AMT.

So the answer about state income taxes is maybe on deductability. Sorry about my going off on this, but we got nailed by the AMT a few years ago and it takes more from us each year. The technical term for this is "it sucks."

Bill noted the states which have zero state income tax. Given what we pay to the state of Massachusetts (a lot), and what we get in return (zero), I envy you and Jeff in no-state income tax Florida.

Thanks for the replies...doesn't sound fun. We are thinking about leaving Sarasota once Kaley graduates high school (3 years). We're not quite old enough or wealthy enough to fit in and are looking for a more outdoor, family-oriented area. We like the eastern NC area (where all Floridians are moving ;) ) because of the hiking trails, whitewater areas, and smaller towns. But...neither of us have lived anywhere but FL. Jeff mentioned average winter temp in Asheville is 25 which is about the coldest temperature I've ever seen. And then state income tax...what's up with that? We're also thinking about going back to Gainesville. No firm plans for anything yet.

Obligatory running info: I finished W6D1 of the C25K today. My mileage is going down and my weight is going up...not what I had in mind. C25K is going pretty well, though. I'm definitely enjoying the break from LR training. It's almost weird to just do 30 min at night.

Can't believe it's almost July!

We get a lot of transplanted Florida folk here in Bowling Green. We are a low paying area but cost of living is much lower also. A good size house here with a nice lot is still available here for $100K and if you get out of Warren County into the smaller towns $50K will still buy a nice place. The problem here now is that a lot of small town folks have to comute 20 to 50 miles to work and with the gas prices that is becoming a concern.

We wanted to move to Florida but with the housing costs there along with the high insurance costs we decided to just stay here and go visit a couple of nice trips each year. Our sales tax here is 6%, isn't it like 8% in Florida?

Windwalker: Florida Counties Each Set Their Own Tax Rates
Florida law mandates a minimum sales tax rate of 6%, collected by the state government to provide services to all Floridians. However, the law also provides for a local option sales tax that lets each county set its own local tax that is collected on top of the general state rate.

Like here in Broward (Fort Lauderdale area) the sales tax is 6%. In Miami-Dade Country South of me it is 6.5%. Palm Beach County North of me is 6.5%. Indian River County is 6%. One of the highest is in Leon County which is were the Capital of Florida is (Tallahassee) is 7.50%. Plus there can be what is called a "bed Tax". Like in WDW (Orange County ) it's like 12%, but at AKL, AS/ASMo/ASMu they are in Osceola County the bed tax is at 13%. The bed tax is just for hotels and not for ticket prices.

As for me, its a rest day and work was ok today. Toe feeling somewhat better, I'll se how my walk goes tomorrow.

Jeff: I liked the map of your route from Sunday. The Diamond Head State Monument is a crator?? It kinda looks like one from the satellite image or maybe a mountain with a flat top??

Good evening everyone.

Tracy,

Yep Diamond Head is an actual extinct volcano crater. You can drive inside of it, pay to park, and hike to the top. Great views of the ocean and Waikiki, but some people hate the 99 consective stairs up in the old Army bunker. It's a pretty good workout.

Some people get claustrophobic walking through an inclined tunnel, the spiral staircase, or ducking low to waddle through the bunker near the top. Others are afraid of heights. Many a time I've had to help people who are out of breath. I've lost track of how many people I've helped after they passed out.

Years back, I used to go up there once or twice a week. Now that they charge, I go only if visitors request to be guided up there. Otherwise I run around the bottom of it.

Just popping in to say hi to everyone!

Well, July starts tomorrow, which means I have officially done NOTHING running-related in an entire month. How the heck did that happen? It started innocently enough, with me taking a week off while visiting with my grandparents. And then I just never got back to it once I returned home. :sad2:

Back to it tomorrow. For real. I need to stop using LTO as an excuse and just get on the TM!

Hey ANG: Tomorrow is a fresh start and a fresh month, time to start anew and all that stuff, ummmmm. Just get out there and move it, you got to move it move it!! hehe:lmao:
I'm bettin on you, so got gettum!!

Hello Everyone!

Just got back from the Strech and Strengthen class at the Y. I don't really know how to describle this class, it's some yoga, some fitness ball and who knows what, but it really wipes me out...

Vic, Way to go on the run Sunday

Angie, I am impressed, I am afraid of the Spin classes~:scared1:

Jeff, you are giving me Garmin Envy!

Terri, I spend a lot of time on the transporatation board. Shock over airfare is widespread these days. Good luck on finding a decent rate!

Scott, I will be looking for you Friday. Which group did you get in?

Stephanie, I ran in HH, but decided to stick to the bike paths instead of the beach. IT was still nice and flat!

Judy, One word SUNBLOCK!

Hope everyone is having a nice SHORT week. My job search is in FULL swing and is keeping me VERY busy!

If we buy groceries or shop at Walmart here in Manatee County, sales tax is 6.5%. But if we go across the street to SuperTarget in Sarasota County, it's 7% (we live just north of the county line). The bed tax in Orlando is one reason we bought DVC.

Dave, where was it in Gatlinburg that you like to go walking? We may be spending some time up that way during our vacation.

Dave said:
We like walking in town especially along the river sections. At the end of town just before you go into the park take the last right go about a block and there is a hiking store on the left, I forget the name. Right behind it is where the trail starts that goes to the visiters center in the park, that is an awesome area for trail walking or running. Lots of stuff to do there also.

We love Gatlinburg, like Aspen but for the regular folks. Prices are very reasonable, compared to Disney it's very inexpensive.

Hi Team!

I too have been a WTL (weekly thread lurker.) It's hard to keep up! :upsidedow

Still, wanted to stop in and say hi this week while I was thinking about it. :wave2: I will try to get back and post more later.

Have a great week!

Judy- Sunscreen - use it early and often!

Jeff - I love the hike up Diamond Head. I got some awesome pics of Waikiki from up there.

I walked approximately a mile today. Had to walk somewhere for work and it was about a 1/2 mile in each direction. Tonight I hit the pool and swam 1/2 mile. Wasn't as bad as last week, when my arms felt like jelly whenI was done.

Terri

As per the post of Queen Judy :worship: I am here on the weekly thread to give you all a big HI!!!!!

So....HI....:wave2:

I have been dutifully running and biking every day like a good little girl but mostly chasing after the kidlet brigade which leaves me not much posting time lately. :sad2: I hope everyone is well and getting their exercise in. Can't wait to see all at ToT again this year. How much fun is that???

Yesterday was a 5.5 mile run for me with my last half mile an 8:34. Thunder + black clouds = more speed. That is your equation for the day. :teacher:

Have a good one everyone. I hope to stop by more often and will attempt to keep up but being a hit and run poster makes that hard to do!! :goodvibes

Hi All!

I haven't been on this thread in a few weeks, so I thought I'd pop over and say hello. I really thought I'd have more time for reading and posting this summer, but so far that's not the case. June is a crazy birthday month for us: DD's was on the 16th, DMom's was on the 26th, mine was the 28th, and DS's was the 29th. I need to run way more than I have been to work off all of that cake! :lmao:

I have nothing to report really. I did run 7.15 miles on Sunday. That's long for me.

Lisa, I love your thunder + black clouds = more speed equation. I think I'd need something as scary as being stuck in a thunderstorm to get me moving faster. Speed is not one of my strong points. :rotfl:

Is it really vacation if you're up at 5 in the morning? So I'm "home" in MA at my Mom's and it does get lighter here earlier. And with the birds all noisy and the dog not in his usual house, we were up at 5. Already eaten breakfast and taken him for a long walk.
So RISE AND SHINE, WISH'ers! If I'm gonna be awake, everyone else can be, too!:)

CarolA: Peachtree was mentioned this morning on the Weather Channel. Sounds like the weather will be good for the race.

Angie: Weather has been hot here lately. It was 79 when I went out this morning but with tons of humidity which can kinda sit on you like a lead tire. I was a dripping mess after my 4 miles. I also don't like spinning all that much, but its nice that you are doing it with your friend.
Hoping that your naggin pains with get better soon.

Terri: Nice to see you here. Hope your training is coming along for your upcoming duathlon.

ScoJo: Glad to see your still around. Hope the foot is doing better. Good luck with the Peachtree.

KiraG: I checked out your photos from your Arizona trip. It brought back memories of the trip I took with my family when I was a younger person. We went to alot of the same areas.

Stephanie: Hope your enjoying you nice family trip in Hilton Head.

Judy: I hope your crispyness is getting better. I always have to lather up or I'll have constant crispyness. (being that I'm a freckled redhead.)

Mel: I don't think that moving out of FL is such a good idea. Temps are too low up North and then theres that snow stuff that happens sometimes. It looks nice coming down but then starts to melt and being brown slushy, muddy mess. Gainsville sounds like a much better alternative and keeps you closer to "The Mouse" and you get to keep your FL resident discounts.

Ang: It's July 1st........ well, did you get out there and do it??

Lisa: I do believe in your equation and have had the experience of it actually working!!:teacher:

Julie: Great job on the 7.15 miles, that is also far for me.

Matt: Hi, and glad to have you BBBBBAAAAAAaaaaaacccckkkkkkk!!

Maura: Hey you, I was up and out the door by 7:10am this morning, so I was kinda there with you. Good Morning!!

Jeff, Debra, AmyBeth, Dave, tink06, Tracey
and Michelle: :wave2:
Duckie (Jen): Just wondering where you are? :scratchin

As for me: I did 4 miles of racewalking this morning and I was a dripping wad of sweat when I was done and it was 82 when I got back, go figure. My right big toe was feeling better today and stride felt good. I am starting to get a bit excited about the DL 1/2, its only 1 month and 29 days away. I did my 4 miles with a 14:09 pace. WOW, maybe some day I'll do 4 miles with a pace under 14min.

Today I'm off from work, so try to get some laundry done, folded and put away.:laundy:
