Wk of June 15 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Wow - I found time to check in here twice in the same day! :goodvibes

Jeff - Congrats on your PR! :thumbsup2 I'm trying to plan out my races for 2009 and HI is a possibility. Now comes the tough decision: Which 1/2 do I do? Something in Honolulu or Maui? Any suggestions? Sometimes these race decisions can be so hard! :rotfl:

Terri

Terri,

I'll get back to you shortly on the race schedule on all islands. I have to locate the right link to post here.

Good morning,
First of all, thanks for all the advise for my training plan for the half. I train on a pretty hilly course so those will do for Disney. I guess I will add some fartlek (thanks Craig): it will be challenging in the middle of winter.
Another question (sorry): I have print a training program from Jenny Hadfield for the half and the longest run is 10 miles (for beginner which I am for the distance). Another plan will have you run up to 13 miles. What should I do? I want to finish smiling: does that means I'm better with the 13 miles long run??
It's pretty quiet at work right now and I'm just watching the clock hoping the last 3 hours will go by quickly. Wishfull thinking...
Have a nice day (Mine is almost done. HAHA)
Diane

Diane: I know there are people on here who do it either way. And both seem to work ok for them, either doing up to 10 miles or doing a 13 before. My plan that I originally started with for my first half had me do a 13 mile day about 3 week before the event. I have to say I liked doing the 13 miles before I had to do the 13miles. I liked knowing that I had done it before the event (even though I remember it not being pretty). I am that type of person and I like being prepared. Some do it the other way and seem to be ok with doing the last 3.10 miles and its ok. SO , I think you just have to figure out what works for you and what you have the time to do.
Good Luck!!!

Kira: Oh, I remember a trip my family took that we drove our RV from FL to CA. We stayed a few days in the Flagstaff Arizona area in a cute and funky campground. They had a neat little parade that the indians put on in Flagstaff. ALSO, at night time (we were there during the summer) it gets a little bit cool, but also they had the BIGGEST mosquitos that I have ever seen and I'm from FL. I think they were even able to get inside the RV at night and you could hear the buzzing. We also did the Grand Canyon. We also added the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest, not sure if they are in the area or not. Just remember to bring the bug spray.

Terri

Terri, Anne and I have been tentatively discussing the Maui half in Sept 2009. This was before gas prices and airfares started going crazy, but it is still a possibility. I've been the the islands a few times, but never to Maui!

Hello Team

Steve - Hi to you, Krista & Carter. :pixiedust: for your ankle!!!!
Terri - The first steps are the hardest!! I hope you find time to keep getting out there.
Allyson - Sound like a lovely day I hope it goes well today when you get out there!
Jeff - AWESOME JOB ON THE PR!!!
Stephanie - So glad we are on at the same time again. I hope you got a good work out today no matter what it was!!
raangoli - Sounds like your training is going well. I am so glad you were able to exceed your goal.
Tracy - Glad you got your LW in, in this horrible heat!!! Have a nice rest.
Kristi - I 'm glad you are doing better in the sleep dept!!
Howard - I love that you guys do the special olympics that is just amazing!! YOu got to go to my favorite restaraunt for dinner!!!! :thumbsup2 Good job on the run.
Kira - Glad you got your run in your vacation sounds amazing!!!
Diane - I agree with Tracy about the being prepared because that is how I am also. In fact I am not comfortable at all with the fact that for our first full I will never actually have completed 26.2 because almost all plans have you stop at 22 to avoid injury. So as Tracy says I guess it depends on your preference but doing 13 ahead of time really helped me mentally.

OK so I did my 4 last night and it was UGLY!! It is so hot it's rediculous, :furious: I felt like my head was going to explode and kept running and kept thinking of Jackie's post that I read last week. But I survived with a 10 min pace and today my knee is NOT liking me. So tonight it is strength training and yoga

Oh I would SO love to do a half in Hawaii and 2009 may just be do-able.
Can I come too? Can I huh? Can I? :hyper:

Angie--yes, it's good to be back again!

But, alas, no workout today at all (unless a little painting counts) I took Emma to Zumba Kids today hoping to w/o with her--well, the instructor didn't show up. Oh well--and now I think I'm getting sick (feeling icky) Just in time for WDW, what luck.

Diane - I'm one of those who likes to do at least 13 before the half. And I felt like my hill training, little though it was, helped during those last couple of miles. The last 2 miles were my fastest in January, so something in the training must have worked (never mind that I hit the wall at mile 8!)

Craig - Welcome home! I must interject a small soccer interlude (forgive me non-soccer peeps) to placate DH, who's been waiting for me to give his input ever since I read your commentary on the US-England game to him. He's a big fan of Rooney, so his feathers ruffled a bit and he said something along the lines of "How many strikers come back to win the ball? His brilliance outshines his stupidity." Mind you, he did admit that he has his moments... now that I've done my duty, we can resume our regularly scheduled running conversation.

Julie - 7 miles is definitely a long run, and 11 mins/mile is no shabby time.

Steve - Sorry about the ankle. I do have to admit that I breathed a sigh of relief when I realized you were the one who slipped in the puddle, and not the mommy-to-be! Krista's had enough close calls already. Take care of the ankle!

Terri - Hooray for the 3.1. You've done the hardest part - the first steps are the toughest.

Allyson - Congratulations on your first 5K! Your post reminded me so much of myself - never ran (except in PE class), not an exerciser, definitely not athletic. It's such a great feeling, isn't it?

Jeff - Congratulations on the PR! And a side note - the third time was the charm - I finally got to donate blood tonight!

Howard - Very impressive to get the miles in AFTER dinner and the Open!

Kira - Any room for me in your luggage? We want to do that trip, but haven't found the funds yet. And it will mean giving up WDW...

Angie - Watch that knee! And be careful with the heat. After my really scary run last week I almost did it again during the RftC Saturday, but fortunately I had someone there to tell me to SLOW DOWN and take it easy. And it's only mid-June?

Stephanie - No icky feeling allowed. Go to bed NOW!

Got up at 5:00 this morning and managed 3.5 on the TM. Between the heat and knowing I had a blood donation appt this afternoon, the TM seemed the best option today. Gonna try to get up tomorrow AM and do Pilates for Dummies DVD, but that means I need to go to bed now.

Jackie

From last week's thread...

Jackie: I think you did a great job on your 3 races/Galloway 10 miler hybrid! I can't imagine trying to cobble that together, and that you did so well is a testament to your training, I think! (Especially with such different start times between the 2nd and 3rd event.)

Julie: I've had my own household incident, involving a stepstool instead of a proper ladder. After the fall (literally), I did the "could have had a V-8" head smack. By then, of course, the damage was done. Maybe we both need an OSHA intervention?? :rotfl2:

CarolA: I'm so sorry to hear about your being laid off. I hope you're enjoying the DISing and the four-buck Chuck. (I remember when it used to be two-buck Chuck.) Also sending PD your way for your job search. It sounds like you've really jumped right into the job thing--and Florida would be awesome (except maybe for Waldo, who earns a big :thumbsup2 for being supportive).

MLA: Punch in the arm to distract one from other pain? You've got siblings, don't you?

Allyson: Congrats on finishing your first 5K, and with style and grace. You earned that hat!!! You had a great time--and were right on your DH's tail! You exceeded your expectations, and found a RW interval that worked for you. I do hope you're proud of yourself. I know I'm proud of you! :cool1: And I just love how you've positioned this as the first step of many (future successes). You rock, woman!

HAPPY BELATED FATHER'S DAY TO ALL THE FATHERS AND FATHER FIGURES!

Lily: Your pics are beeyoooteeeful. It looks like a little slice of heaven to me! :cloud9: Sorry that your relay got stormed out.

Diane: What Craig said, because he's so darned articulate. I especially liked his discussion of intensity and the variety of ways to get that kind of WO in. Also, Craig's discussion of weight training is something I've embraced as part of my training. I tend to do more XT than once a week, but I need to really watch one of my knees and ankles from a long-ago car accident.

As for the length of your LR, I've done the 10/13.1 and 20/26.2 for last year's Goofy. Because I'd done over 13 miles in my training, I finished feeling strong and confident for the 1/2. But I found going beyond 20 miles on the full very tough, mentally. This year, I want to training closer to the marathon distance for just such a reason. I guess I need the reassurance.

Craig: It's great to have you back! I know you posted regularly while you were gone--far more than I would have--but I'm selfishly glad to have you hear, where I can "eavesdrop" on all your great advice to others. And hopefully get more soccer talk, too. ITA with the weight work--I've been slacking on that since Cleveland, and boy do I regret it. It's non-negotiable for me at this point, I think.

Julie: An easy 7+ miles. I think I hate you. :lmao: Seriously, you're doing fabulous!! :woohoo: I'm so looking forward to meeting you for the full. I don't know what I'll be running at, in terms of pace, but right now we're pretty close.

Angie: What a great variety of XT you have. I'm certain your lack of pain is related to all those activities. I keep meaning to get back into yoga for the stretching, and yours are just the words I needed to hear. You're building up a great base for the marathon. And I believe that's true even with last night's touch 4 miler.

Scott: It's great hearing your plans for the Goofy involve more XT and less running. I'll be watching you carefully (with maybe the Focker stare) to see the results, as I'd be interested in doing something like that for Goofy 2010.
Ouch, ouch, ouch about the ankle. Ironic that ice, something that's so useful in reducing swelling, was the culprit in your injury. (Ambient room temperature? LOL.) Take care of yourself. But yay for a great weekend and lots of family and friends who are helping Carter take over your house with baby goodies! (He's already taken over everyone's hearts!)

Terri: The important things are 1) you did start again and those first steps are all important, 2) you completed a 5K, 3) you're committed to not "slugging" it again, and 4) you got to go to WDW!!!! (I just needed to end on the most important thing, you know!)

Allyson: Woo hoo for your DH's new ride. I'll bet you took a look at gas mileage in your considerations for the vehicle. And I'm so happy that you're looking forward to your next run. It's a great feeling, isn't it?

Aloha Jeff: WTG with your 1/2 marathon and a PR! You deserve it! (And I bet you're very happy to do training runs with your guru!)

Aloha Jeff, Pat, Liz, Terri, Anne: It sounds like a WISH meet in Hawaii might be in the works!!!

Stephanie: I'm one of the girls, sort of. Can I come along for the Disney weekend? (Darn budget.) Have a great time, and make sure you have some kind of outrageous story to bring back & share with us.

Raangoli: Ugh, shower renovation at the gym. Too much competition for too little resources. (Our gym went through this last fall--ugly.) Wow, it sounds like you've really been working those leg muscles; I wouldn't be surprised if you're already showing progress. Keep it up!

Tracy: It sounds like your DL training is proceeding quite well--great job in the haze. But admit it, you're just going back to Mount Trashmore for the bragging rights and scenery! :rotfl2: Btw, I can't believe how good your memory is of course details! I think I must block a lot of things out.

Kristi: I'd love to do Applefest, and will check things out with DOOD. It's so great having you as a resource. Now if you could only give me some sleeping tips, as I've been having insomnia. (DOOD's gone, which interrupts my sleep cycle. Either that, or it's the cats who now occupy his side of the bed.)

Howard (and Cam): Thank you for your work with the Special Olympics. It's much appreciated! And it sounds like you got as much out of it as you gave. Love your WO information--I'm learning so much about splits from it. Keep 'em coming. P.S. I responded to the headphones query on last week's thread, just so you know.

Kira: I love IKEA! It's one of the best things about moving to Pgh. (Okay, not really, but it is a plus!) Yay for incorporating swimming into your XT schedule--it sounds like it'll be good for you. Trail running after dark? Man, that would just freak me out. (Snow White nightmares as a child.) Have a great time in AZ. I haven't spent a lot of time there, but what I have done I've liked. I look forward to your TR upon your family's return.

Jackie: I didn't know you did Pilates for Dummies. I love that DVD. I've had it from Netflix so long now that it's embarrassing.

A general shout-out to several folks who I haven't seen here as regularly: Carrie, Cecilia, Jen, Ang, Judy, Ms. Duckie, Amy, Scott, Leana, Claire, Morgan, SamSam, Vic, Bill, Maura, Frank, and others! :wave2: pixiedust: I hope you're doing well!

As for me: I've put myself back into C25K training in order to try to work on speed. Not that I'll ever be speedy, but I'd like to be a leeeetle faster. My knees seem to like RWs anyway, so that may be the way I roll come January.

Speaking of January, I can't believe we haven't booked anything yet! :scared1: I need to work on that, which means solidifying holiday plans with the ILs. :scared1: :scared1:

Pat - Maui in 09 would be great! I've been to Maui a few times and it is so much fun.

Jeff- I saw the race schedule for HI on a website. I was just wondering if you have an opinion of which race is "best"? I know it's all relative, but if one is better run or less hilly (I hate hills) or better bling ;) . Any input would be appreciated.

Anne
- so you're gonna come to HI in 09, too? That would be awesome. :woohoo:

Liz - Sure you can come. ::yes:: The more the merrier.

I sense a WISH meet happening. :goodvibes

Kira
- have a great time on your vacation!

No workout for me today. xt tomorrow, hitting the pool for lap swim in the morning and either a run or bike in the evening.

Terri,

I've only run races here on Oahu, where Honolulu is located. The usual hill for me is Diamond Head crater both ways. I have yet to travel to the neighbor islands to run a race.

My friend has run the Maui Marathon, and said the ocean views are pretty spectacular. Fairly flat course, but might have some rises and falls. Nothing major. You don't want to run up Haleakala crater, way too steep. Here's their bling:

Maui 5K and 15K

http://www.maui15k.com/indexMain.html

Any race in Kona on the big island is going to be HOT, extremely humid, or very dry since you're near the ocean, but running through the lava fields.

Hilo races have either rain or VOG (volcano fog).

Honolulu marathon gives a pretty cheap looking key chain, and a shell necklace. That's a letdown for being the 6th largest marathon (I think we're #6).

Hi All,

I'm really trying to keep up with the weekly thread this time so I can try to get to know everyone better...

Angie - Sorry to hear that you knee wasn't happy with you after your run. I hope that it's feeling better soon! Here's some pixie dust for your knee. pixiedust:

Steve - Ouch! I hope your ankle is on the mend!

Terri - Great job on your longest distance since Jan. That must feel great! :cool1:

Jeff - Congrats on your PR! I don't think I could ever be that fast, even in my dreams.

raangoli - Sounds like you're doing great with your cross-training and swimming. :cool1:

Tracy - 7 miles in 83 degrees - yikes! That's impressive. :thumbsup2 I've yet to deal with hot weather as I try to get out in the very early morning.

Kira - I feel the same way about swimming. I love playing in the water with the kids, but hate swimming laps. Have a great trip to AZ. I've never been there myself, but it's on my list of places I plan to visit...someday.

Jackie - Do you like the Pilates for Dummies DVD? I just put it in my Netflix queue, so I should have it in a few days.

Debra - I'm sorry that you had a household injusry as well. At least you were using an object intended for standing on. I had the brilliant idea to use a toybox to stand on. I don't now if we need an OSHA intervention, maybe we just need a few martinis! I'm looking forward to meeting you too, as long as you don't try to drag me on ToT. :scared1:

Good Morning athletes! :surfweb:

Thank you to all of you complimenting my recent efforts. It isn't easy but nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

Here is my info for this morning's run:

Miles: 3
Time: 30:21
Pace: 10:08

Splits:
9:50
10:32
10:02

I kind of dogged it today :dog:, no energy... but I got it done.

I am proud to report that my weigh in this morning yielded another pound or two off the scale. :yay: I am now officially under 200, weighing in at 199.9! :cool1:  It is so much easier putting on than it is taking it off.

Debra: I'll check out the earphone info on the other thread, thanks!

Debra & Angie: Thanks for your kind words about Special Olympics.

Enjoy your day and keep on training!

Howard

Lilly- Sorry to hear about your relay, which one was it? I was one of the chairs for the Parma relay the last two years and we had some weather issues also. Luckily our relay is held at Tri-C West (a local community college for the rest of you) and they keep it opened for such occasions. We waited it out and it turned into a pretty nice night. Unfortunately the survivor lap got pretty much rained out last year which is about the worst timing ever but it was nice for the Luminaries.

Sorry I have been MIA last week. The schedule was hectic and trying to fit in watching my DVR’d Euro matches just made it crazier. Craig, what got into the Dutch?! GOD I hope they don’t lay down for the Romanians today, I need Italy through.

After taking a week off because of a friend’s wedding I will be doing 2 runs this weekend including a night run on Friday. I love night runs and which there were more.

OK, that is all for now. I will promise to be around more this week.

So back from a mostly non-productive trip to the ortho doc about my knees. Shorthand version: no major problems, structural deficiencies, strengthen the quads/abductors, change shoes--why are you running? I think doctors should provide a written report on what's wrong along with recommended corrective action. (Which I called today to ask for since I am not clear on a few things mentioned, but "they don't do that") I guess I'll figure something out through trial and error.

Kira I took my son and a friend to Arizona for spring break a few years back. A few days in Phoenix (at a hotel with a water park), overnight in Sedona (we hiked in the state park just north), drove up through the Oak Creek Canyon (would like to have stopped at a few more places, like Slide Rock Park) went through Flagstaff (again--would like to have seen Lowell Observatory, but didn't). Picked up rte 180 to get to Grand Canyon (nice drive with beautfiul view of Mt Humphrey). Stayed at GC a couple of nights and hiked part of the South Kaibab trail and did Ranger stuff with the boys (fun for kids--do the activities, get a ranger badge), which was great. Left the park through the east entrance and headed back via rte 89--stopped at Wupatki Nat'l Monument and drove down to Sunset Crater . All in all--neat trip, but could always use more time!

Craig Bienvenue aux Etats-Unis. Did you bring us all back brioche and croissants? And what was the "strike du jour". When I was last there, it was the metro. The trains were running, but trash was nearly knee deep in spots!

Well, I did my wieght training today. Will have to be more diligent on the knees. But tough noogies--I'm gonna keep running.

Maura

Maura - I hear ya! Don't you love when they provide such useful info. Drives me nuts. Learned far too long ago that sometimes it is trial and error (much to the dismay of my doc).
