Wk of June 1 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi Everyone!

I guess how Waldo's friend does will depend on what group he end up in. Groups 1 and 2 won't be so bad, but group 7 or 8 might be horrific. I will be thinking of you from the comfort of my air conditioned living room!

I am sitting here typing and looking at my outside temps. Its 8:20 am and the temp is already 94. Its going to be another scorcher!
I am in Forsyth where the watering restrictions just keep getting tighter. I don't get my 30 minutes of handwatering again until Tuesday. The grass is gone, but I am hoping to save a bush or two... We need a hurricane to come stall over Lake Lanier.

Cecilia

Waldo's friend is in at LEAST group 4. No time submission. Waldo is probably in 1A (he's fast) and I should be two or three. (Submitted time, but I am slow LOL!)

I haven't even checked to see what my current water restrictions are! I did wanter the pots and bushes yesterday, but with my travel I figure they will just have to arrest me. (I am not home on Tuesdays for example!)

Angie, you are being SO good. I am proud of you for taking today off! I know that's not your normal style!:cool1:

Jeff, you and your wife are our "poster children" for good energy habits. She drives the hybrid and you bike to work... Look at all that gas you are saving. Should keep you from feeling guilty when you do drive the Tocoma.;)

Angie So glad to hear your run went well.

Cecilia Ah yes, what to do with the kids over summer. Since my DH and I both work full time, the kids always went to day camp when they were young. Now it's just DS, 16, and I still am trying to motivate him to do something engaging this summer. He does have daily XC practice and he likes to play guitar, so that's good, but there are a whole lot of hours to a day!

As for me, I have my appt with the orthopedic guy on the 16th, so until then just some light running. Took the dog for another run. First mile, iIprobably set a speed record! But since it's getting warm here, he slowed down somewhat on miles 2-3.

Have a great weekend everyone. Summer has arrived here in SE Michigan!

Leana: So you're not only hooked on DUs but going to jump right into the Tris? Why am I not surprised? (And pleased for you, of course.) What is plyometrics? I looked it up, but hoping for your ground-level explanation, like how it works in practice in a class.

Debra - I was going to wait till next year for a tri - you know, so I could practice swimming and all. Your comment got me thinking though - why not this year? There is a women's only tri that sounds like a lot of fun, very beginner friendly and it is a pool swim. I had to visit my chiro today (10 time marathoner, 6 time Iron Man finisher) and mentioned it to him. I guess he knows the race director and he recommended it as a good first timer's race. So.....maybe I'll be doing a tri in August...??? I got my membership to the Alberta Triathlon Association today so I don't have to keep paying $15 for day of race insurance, so take that for what it is worth!

As for plyometrics, essentially it involves plenty of jumping. We did all kinds of jump squats, jump lunges - holy smokes, those things make your legs burn! I hear it is a good exercise for runners!

Hi All!

First, thanks for all the warm welcomes. I'm so happy to be part of such an amazing and inspiring group :worship: . Since this running gig is still new to me, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for you between now and January.

raangoli - I hope that you reach your new goal. You sound very determined. Also, good luck with the swimming lessons. I think it's great that you're taking them. :thumbsup2

Jeff - Here's a little-known mathematical equation that I'll share:
8 mile run + heat = ice cream
In my opinion, any run in the heat should end with ice cream. Come to think of it, any run at all should end with ice cream. I mean, we all need calcium, right?

Shannon - I'm very impressed that you're able to get work outs in after your little ones are in bed! I'm always exhausted by the time I get my kids to bed. I feel like going to bed when they do. If only the laundry would do itself...:rotfl:

Frank - Thanks for assuring me that I can do the marathon if I set my mind to it. I feel this way most of the time, but then I have those days where I'm running slower than usual, and I start to doubt myself.

WTG on your 5K PR! :thumbsup2

Carol - I wish watching dance recitals could count as cross-training. I'd be in great shape if that were the case!

Debra - You're really going to make me go on ToT, aren't you? :scared1:
Is it still hot in your neck of the woods? The heat will be arriving up here tomorrow. We don't have our air conditioners in yet. I'm hoping DH can get them in tomorrow. Whether he does or not, I think there's going to be a lot of ice cream in my future.

Carrie & Angie - Thanks for the words of encouragement. They really help!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Angie, I am so happy to read that you are pain free and taking it easy at the moment! Such good news!

I still have not done my bike to work attempt. Was rainy on some days that would have been my pick. Glad today was not the day for me. It is hot here on the North Coast. I'm looking to find some ladies on the Towpath tomorrow hoping to score someone to run with once in a while. They step off kind of late for me with the heat, but I'm going to give it a try.

Vic has taken on the job of updating the 2008 WISH Team calendar and I want to say thanks for taking on the task.

WISH Team, please post your events on the calendar so we can cheer you on the weekly race report thread. I know there are some events missing. How might I know that? Well, b/c I've got to list me on there too! :teeth:

Good morning WISHers!

Hoping your Saturday morning is going well.

It's been a running, bodyweight exercise and boxing this week. Feeling pretty good.

To our new teammates - :welcome:

Angie - Glad you were able to run pain free.

Everyone - Keep up the great training!!

:)

Good Morning Everyone!

Hope everyone has a great Saturday!

I did my Galloway Group run this morning. It's growing on me. We were suppose to do six miles, but my Garmin said it was more like 5.75. One hour 13 minutes. I felt pretty good at the end so I guess this run/walk thing is working.

Anyone doing the Jacksonville "Run for Donna" next year. Several people in my group are and I am thinking about the half. I have bailed on the Silver Comet here in Atlanta. It's "Bama" Week for my college team (As in "Beat Bama, GO VOLS") and Waldo just got spot in the Marine Corp Full that weekend. I got to spend a few hours on line earlier this week looking for a reasonable hotel near the Metro for him.

It's definintely getting warmer here. And boy is it humid! Stay hydrated everyone.
(I like the post race ice cream idea!)

I wanted to report my training from this morning...

I went out early in temps in the 70's with VERY HIGH humidity before it got into the 90's here today. It was a tough run. Here are the results:

Miles: 7
Time: 1:11:18
Pace: 10:11

I have to do some XT tomorrow followed by as rest day on Monday! Yay! :cool1:

Be cool out there today!

Happy training!

Howard

Jackie: Good luck with the 5K and don't worry about being one of the "Fast Runners", they don't have as much fun anyway.

Carrie: Congrats for your "Wings".

Jeff: Great job on the biking to work. It is about 14 miles one way to my job and it includes I-75 so I think that biking is out of the question. I do drive my Honda Civic Hybrid so gas mileage is pretty good. It is my second one and I have owned a hybrid since 2004 so I guess I was a foreward thinker at the time.

Cecilia: Sorry to hear about the dirt trailing, couch sitting kids. I know why some people dread school being out. I know all about water restrictions, we are in a phase 2 which means you can water your lawn 2 times a week and can wash your car outside anytime. Ugh. They are thinking about keeping us on some kind of water restrictions all year through, which in a makes a bit of logical sense.

Angie: I like your plan of easing into running for your IT band issues. Do you get massages - a good massage therapist would also be a good help. My "get up and go" was happenin this morning, so my walk went well.

Maura: Nice little run with the dog.:)

Leana: A tri in August????? mmmmm. You are getting to be brave. Good for you.

Lily: Did you find anyone to run with on the Towpath?? I hope you did.

CarolA: Glad to hear your Galway Group run went well.

As for me I did 3 miles this morning in my 86 degree weather with a feels like of 90 degrees. (humidity is at 55%) I had a better "get up and go" feeling this morning. Next week will hopefully be better, after the dog incident and a few ugly walks, it should.
Today include watching BIG BROWN at the Belmont Stakes and the Hurricanes Game - they need to win today.
Tomorrow I have a Long Walk of 7 miles and I just got a pair of the compression shorts from Race Ready with with pockets in the back. I am hoping this will help during long races so I don't have to have a big fanny pack and just use my spibelt. I will let you know how it goes.
Have a nice day everyone.

Where is AMY!!!

Hi everyone! I have been completely absent from the Weekly thread this week. I am so sorry - I have been reading but a lot is going on around here and I just haven't gotten around to posting.

My 16 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis :( . I hadn't heard of it either! It usually strikes people who already have psoriasis (which she doesn't), and who are 30-60 years old. It is similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis, and without treatment could have a pretty awful impact on her body. Right now it has shown up only in her fingers. Luckily we have caught it really early, her symptoms are pretty mild and joint damage is minimal. She needs to get on a medication immediately (methiprexate), and will need to stay on something for the rest of her life (unless they find a cure!). Because of the effect of the medication on your liver, we need to monitor her liver enzymes bi-monthly with a blood test.

I know that we are blessed that she has something treatable, and that we have caught it early, etc., etc. - but basically it sucks! She is a beautiful, vibrant, brilliant young woman, and I really hate that she has to deal with this. We are still in a bit of shock about it.

Anyway, thanks for listening. If any of you out there have dealt with something similar with yourself or your kids I would love to hear from you.

On a totally different note, I ran the Wissahickon Trail Run 10K this morning. This was totally outside my comfort zone for a number of reasons:
- I have never actually run 10K (5.7 miles was my max before this morning!)
- I don't usually run on trails
- I HATE hills, and there are some doozies on this route
- I have been doing a low carb diet this past week, and so am feeling a bit depleted

To top it off, it is the hottest day of the year so far today! The race started at 10am, and it was about 83 and 95% humidity by then!

Anyway, I finished, I did great and it was a lot of fun. I will post a full race report on the other thread. I wore my WISH shirt and got lots of compliments about it!

Have a great weekend and stay cool!

Kira,
No advice, but  for you and your daughter.

And congrats on the race!

Kira: So sorry about the diagnosis for your daughter . Like you said, at least you know what it is and how to treat it. I have some degenerative osteoarthritis, but there is really nothing to do for that and is no where near what your daughter has. There are some things your daughter can take to help her liver stay healthy like milk thistle and diet issues - now I am no medical doctor so don't take that advise unless you research it. Now my dog is not a human but she has liver disease and takes a medicine that has milk thistle in it. I hope that the treatments help her and she is doing well.
Congrats on your 10K!! Sounds like you did some things you don't normally do and you finished well. Yeah!!

Kira, for you and DD. I am glad you got an early diagnosis and will send lots of PD that it works well with no liver probs.

Good job on your event with all you have on yourself it is good to know you were able to get something going and enjoy it too!

Going to read the report now...

I did not make the meet up with the gals. DH and I ended up going out and did more than he was ever expecting. I'll get to the fun later.

Thanks for all the hugs guys! They mean a lot!

Going to read the report now...

Whoops - sorry, not quite done with it yet! I am off with the kids to a Carnival for a few hours :scared1: and I plan to finish it tonight before bed.

Kira,  for you and your daughter.

Kira, OK I guess I'll read it later.

Sad day for Big Brown.

DH wanted to take his T-Bird for a ride so we found a park and he and I went out for a "short" walk. I thought I heard it was around a 1 mile trail. Well, that's what I thought it was going to be, but it turned out to be 4 miles in upper 80s heat and very humid on some parts gravel trail that was NOT level at all. I mentioned turning back, but he was determined to plough onward not knowing how far we would eventually go. Since we figured it would be a short hop, we left the water in the car too. He's feeling it now. Hip area is not happy for him at all right now. At least I had the endurolytes with me, also in the car, so he was able to take them when we got back to the car. Me, I'm just hot! I think tomorrow is a pool day somewhere.
