Wk of July 22--WISH Walking/Running Club

I am off to Mohegan Sun soon. But seriously, if anyone is near Atlantic City and wants to go to a free concert Friday night, PM me. I'll be back home & online tomorrow. I needed 2 tickets for that show (it's now sold out) and the charity put me down for 4 tickets (just in case there were more volunteers). So, unless there is some crazy screw up at the box office, I will have an extra set with no one to give them to - I don't know many New Jersey people!

And I seriously hope the band doesn't recognize me - that would be so embarrassing! I may pester Mike, the drummer, about running Disney again tonight though... ;) But that means he will pester me to do the Rock N Roll Phoenix race.

And just so everyone doesn't think I am absolutely nuts, 3 concerts in a week is something I do not normally do. Actually, it may be 4. I have Police tickets for Fenway Park this Saturday and I can't sell them to save my life. But that's another story!

:rockband:

Hey group! I hope it's ok for me to hope in and join the group! My name is Beth, I am 41, wife, mother of 2 boys, and a nurse. Started running 2 years ago during my weight loss plan. I have lost 65 pounds, I have run 5 1/2 marathons, and I am training for a marathon September 30th in Toronto.

I am also running the Virginia Beach Rock and Roll 1/2 marathon on Labor Day weekend!:thumbsup2

My training is going pretty well so far.....my long run will be 14 miles this weekend.....we'll have to see how that goes!:confused3

I am happy to read all of your posts and plans for future races and training!

Beth

Beth--Welcome--If I remember correctly, Kevin is doing the full in Toronto and Kim is doing the 1/2. Good luck with the training!

eeyore--Your first race is a huge deal! Don't come 'round these parts talkin' the "no big deal" speech! We're all here to cheer you on to the finish!:cool1: I also don't take anything with me on a 5K--I don't like the 5K distance, so I'm just hoping I'll be done fast!;)

Christa--WTG getting any training in with your schedule--it never ceases to amaze me!

DaveSW--WTG on the run! So, did ya talk with DW yet about January????? We're waiting........

Judy--How ya doing this am??? Any less mummified??

Kim--When I do hills on the TM I vary the incline from 0-5%

Okay, really need to get moving. We've been out late this week b/c of VBS for DD--and now I'm getting a slow start this morning. Have a 7 miler planned today--ugh, on the TM--but I'll getter done.

Oh, speaking of family drama....we've got some of our own. FIL and DH have a very odd relationship (MIL and FIL are divorced) Anyway, FIL finds out that we're not coming back to Ohio for any holidays this year b/c of other circumstances, one of which being WDW in January. So, he calls last night, after not speaking to DH in like 6 weeks, and wants to know if he can come with us to WDW in Jan. to watch the kids. Huh? He hasn't seen the kids since xmas, and now he want to be our sitter. So, being the diplomat I am, I say "Sure, why not" But I told DH that I am, under no circumstances, giving up my room at BCV. So we'll see what happens. I'll hate using all our DVC pts. to book a 2 bed, if any are available anyway. I"ll be glad to have a free sitter for the kids for hte weekend--but I hate the drama that comes with travelling with FIL and his girlfriend. Maybe I'll make a deal with him--yeah, come down and crash our vacation, IF you watch all the WISH kids for free for the weekend!;)

Okay, really going to get ready now! Have a great Hump day all (always makes me giggle typing that!):rolleyes1

Looking for suggestions -

What to take on the 5K...

I figure it will take me every bit of 50 minutes - Do I need a visor? towel? (how do you handle the perspiration?)

Sandy - I would say that you don't want to load yourself down. What do you normally take when you are out training, or has it been mostly on the TM? If it sounds like there are a couple of water stops, I'd leave the water at home. If you are worried, take some with you. If you have a waist pack you can pack a camera, but other than that, I'd say try to pack light. Good luck!!!!!
---
Last night was boot camp, and even though it was raining, with some lightning on my way there, it wasn't too bad. We met at Memorial Stairs which is normally where I go for my hill training. We did some running up the stairs, running up and down the hill, push ups, step ups, jumping jacks, and skipping rope. Sheena, the instructor, watched me running up the hill and pointed on a bunch of stuff I need to work on. My legs tend to swing in circles instead of going straight forward and back, my arms really rotate around my body rather than moving straight forward and back, plus my bum sticks out, all signs of weak hips. Plus I really point my toes upwards, stressing my shins. I am really going to have to pay attention to my form on those hills. I will try to practice today as I squeeze my 5 miler in over lunch.

For those of you wondering about some things to do to work on the hips...here's one she gave me. I walked up the stairs, facing towards the railing, making sure that my foot was landing parallel to the edge of the step, not pointing outwards at all. On the upstep you work your hip pretty well. I'll probably try to get in a round or two of those over lunch as well. This is looking like one long lunch break...

And for those of you wondering about Goofy training plans, the Running Room magazine published one recently. You can access it here, and the plan is on page 28. All the distances are in km though.

Welcome to the team Beth!!!!!

Yes Kevin is doing the full marathon....even though he hasn't checked in lately....Kevin where are you!!!!! DH and I are doing the 1/2. Do you live in the T.O. area???? I am north of Newmarket.

Stephanie Good luck on your 7M today.

Hey Chicago area people. DH and I are heading that way next weekend. We have awesome friends who live just south of Chicago and we are going for a visit.

Leana Hi there. I was just trying to figure out how to post the goofy thing I read it last night in the magazine.

Kim

Excellent! It looks like we are going to have a really cool group of WISHer's at POFQ in January!

I am now able to walk arond the house without this darn surgical shoe on, which is quite wonderful. The stitches come out Monday and then I should be able to start training on the 9th because that will be one month. I can't begin to tell you how much I am looking forward to it!! There are two 5ks we want to do in September. If all goes well I should be ready.

Kristi - OMG woman, you kill me! :lmao:

Beth - Not only :welcome: but :worship: You lost 65 pounds?? :worship: :worship:

Stephanie
- to you for the family drama. I'm tapped out and refuse to deal with anymore FD right now. My husband's family put the fun in dysfuntional.

Hi Everyone,

I really had a meltdown last week. I think it all started when I went to the Disneyrunning.com site and read a bunch of race reports from last year's marathon. There was such a prevalent theme of pain and suffering that I started to get nervous about doing a marathon again. I'm wondering why do I want to make myself so miserable for close to 5 hours? I think I got so excited thinking about running through Cinderella's Castle, I've forgotten that 26.2 miles is a looooong way. It's been nearly 13 years since the last marathon I ran and I think the memories of the pain have dimmed a bit.

On top of that I started to panic because it's now less than 6 months until the marathon. I started training in January and have gone from LRs of 3.5 to 10 miles last week. I now have less than 6 months to go from 10 to 26.2!! I was really nervous that I just wouldn't be ready. I got out my plan and studied that a bit, then compared it to several other plans and realized that it's in the same ballpark as other plans so as long as I stick to it, I shouldn't worry too much. So I think I'm OK now. It's going to be a challenge, but not any harder than other things I've been through in my life. I have plenty of time to train and I have a great support group in my WISH teammates. Thanks for "listening".

So to catch up with some of you...

Sandy: I’ve read that you should buy 2 pairs of running shoes then when the first pair is ½ way through it’s lifespan you start alternating the other pair in. That way you never go from a worn out pair to a brand new pair. Good job on getting your run in. Sorry you hate running so much. I hope it gets to the point where you can enjoy it.

WWDave: Congrats on passing your exam. Nice job on your PR for your race.

Craig: Congratulations on such a speedy mile. You never seem to stop pushing yourself. I’m glad you are enjoying your stay in CO.

Terri: Great job on your mile. I’m glad you’re back in training.

Hey Mickey: Welcome back. Good luck with the training.

Stephanie: Nice job on your LR. Glad you had some nice weather. We have been absolutely spoiled this summer with the lack of heat and humidity. My apologies to all the New Englanders that I just jinxed. We’ll probably have the 90’s for all of August. Hope your cold is better.

Maggie: Good job on your 9 miler.

Andrew: Congratulations on your longest run EVER.

Tricia: Nice job on the TM.

Leana: Yes you are crazy work out girl. I am so envious of your time and energy.

MSDave: Sorry you had such a LTO week. Here’s WISHing you a better week this week.

Dana: I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t even imagine how hard that must be. Don’t call yourself a slacker. You get points for just getting yourself out of bed every day. And, no, you’re not the only one to redo your training plan. I’m on version 6 or 7 since January.

PungoAngie: Congrats on your 5 mile race. Don’t let the Chip guy get you down.

AngieTuck: Glad that you were able to run outside with no pain. Keep up the core work. Sorry to hear about DS’s ankle issue.

Diane: Congrats on joining a gym. Keep up the xt.

Beth: Welcome!! Good luck with your training.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Good Morning everyone.

(((((((((((((Cindy)))))))))))))) Today is a new and awesome day.

Judy, this picture for some reason made me think of some of you sassy WISH gals.

http://cat-alog.com/cards/cat_slippers.jpg

You gals being the cat of course and the dog is probably Big Vic.

Welcome Beth, my lady Erica is a nurse also.

I went out for a 4 mile tempo walk on my hills. It was a little humid but not to bad. Easy day and I felt much better after than I did before. I woke up a little sore in the calves.

Have a great day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Cindy

I think you should inverse your thoughts. Being up to 10 miles now, in the heat of the summer, 6 months before marathon day is quite remarkable. As the weather cools you'll be able to use your excellent base to build up into the high teens before the marathon.

Plus, if you are in trouble, then I'm cooked. I've not yet gotten up to 10, although if Friday turns out as cool as they anticiapte, then I will give it a try.

And about last year's pain . . .

We all suffered horribly on January 7, 2007, because of the weather. You'll never find a worse weather scenario for a distance race than that morning. I intentionally did not turn on the weather channel at 4 a.m. that day. I knew it was going to be miserably hot and humid, but when I stepped out of the hotel room it almost knocked me over. If nature would give us a temperature in the 40's and decent humidity on January 13, we'll all be happier.

Best

Craig

Did 5k on TM yesterday, hope to do same today and then take next day off.

Eeyore- I'd been thinking about your 5k question too. The first race I did was a 10k. I left my water bottle in the car because I was intimidated by all the "real" runners. All during the race, the water stops seemed soooo far away, and the water tasted gross. So, now I carry a small bottle, but I rarely use it. It actually drives me crazy, but I like the security of having it.

I use a visor and love it (although I hate hats in normal life). I learned the hard way that sunglasses get all fogged up. At least, normal sunglasses- I haven't tried any of the fancy running ones.

Are you running in a race without chips? Our local races don't have chip timing, so you have to go up to a table after the race and write down your time. If you don't do that, you don't get an official time. I learned that the hard way too!

Have fun!

I'll report back later. Got to go get DD from day camp before I look negligent!

I'm wondering why do I want to make myself so miserable for close to 5 hours?

I think I can answer this.

The pride, the thrill of finishing, the excitement of getting your medal, the sense of self accomplishment and satisfaction, the envy of stangers and the admiration of your friends and team mates....those things last a very, very long time. Much longer than the five short hours you fought to get them.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!:) Glad to be here!

Kim: I am from Pennsylvania, but gave the family a choice in my first marathon. They want to go to another "country" and Canada is the closest and a cheaper way to get them there! I was planning on the Marine Corp Marathon for my first but I was over-ruled. I am glad it worked out that way, b/c the kids are really looking forward to going and they have been "training" with me on their bikes for my long runs. They have been riding 12 to 13 miles so far1

Training is going well so far, but now I am getting to mileage that I have never done before. I have only run 14 miles once and it wasn't pretty. This week will be a 14 miler and I hope it goes better than the last time.

Beth

And just so everyone doesn't think I am absolutely nuts,
:rockband:

Too late on that one!:lmao: ;) :rotfl2:
You are tooo funny! Have a blast!

Welcome Beth:welcome:

Judy-- awsome answer! I would just change "a very, very long time" to FOREVER!

OK, I did 10 miles yesterday. Five running, then five walking about an hour later. DD went to Six Flags and DS was a Grammy's. I showered and found myself bored so I watched my new set of Green Acres DVDs on the TM or another five miles.

Bill-- these smilies are for you!:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Cindy - Please don't let yourself get too worried about those reports, mine included. The heat was MISERABLE this year, but you know what?! Most of us are signed up to do it again, some of us signed up almost immediately after, so it couldn't have been that bad, right?! Seriously, although there were times that we wanted to cry, quit, or just scream we made it through and the reward was so worth it. It seems like you have a great base going with 10 mile LR's. I was almost there (8 miles) but then my shins started acting up and I had to rest for a few weeks. I am doing 5 this weekend. Just stick to your training plan (whichever number this one is), and you'll do fine!!

Dana

.

The pride, the thrill of finishing, the excitement of getting your medal, the sense of self accomplishment and satisfaction...

:dance3: Oh, Judy, you are getting me really excited about the marathon again!

Cindy, yes as Craig so eloquently put it, you are up 10 miles! That is awesome, I have no doubt you do great!

MSDave and Sunny, great midweek runs!:thumbsup2

Kristi, OMG, 3 concerts in one week, you wacky girl. I can't remember the last time I was at a concert. I think a old boyfriend too me to see Rod Stewart in the late 80's.

Big Vic, where are you guy, I miss you around these parts.

Leana, you are going Goofy? I didn't remember that. Good luck with your training. I hope you/we don't have those miserable conditions last year.

Craig, I did turn on the weather channel at 3 a.m. marathon morning and actually took a picture of the screen showing the 70 F and 90% humidity. Remember that was at 3 a.m. Do you all remember that thick haze??:scared1:

I am on for 7 tempo miles tonight or tomorrow morning. Hope I can fit it in. My house is party central with both kids having their friends over this afternoon, I think I am going to need some serious unwinding when they all go home.:rolleyes1

Colleen

Real quick!
Got in 10 miles in 1:27:54 on the trails
for an 8.47 MPM
it was HOT (90) and I ran out of water!
Gotta change clothes and pick up DDs from grammies.

Christa - Great job!! Be careful out there running in this kind of heat, and make sure you have enough fluids!!

I was just reading my (not mine, I'm not actually a member) local running clubs newsletter, and you won't beleive what I saw. It actually made me kind of angry, and I know Disney wouldn't approve. I don't know how to copy and paste from a pdf, but go to page 16 and you'll see.

Hey Colleen! Thanks for asking.

It's been WTO and LTO around here. I've been on the road for the past couple of weeks and going again next week. The DW is just thrilled about it.

And, I've been nursing a dog bite for the past week. DS and DIL are on their way to Germany for a three year tour of duty and we agreed to keep their 9 year old Keeshond. He and Dusty (yellow Lab) had a tiff last Tuesday, with me in the middle, and I came out with the injuries. Puncture wounds on the left inner forearm and right inner thigh. A couple of inches higher on the thigh wound and I'd be talking in a higher voice. :rolleyes1 Had to do the ER deal beacuse my leg wouldn't stop bleeding. A great way to spend a Tuesday evening. But, I do have pictures. :thumbsup2

Anyhoo, no training to report, so I've been lurking.

Have fun on your run this evening.

I am still not feeling up to walking today. I am allowing another day off. 2.5 weeks to CDC, and since I have already done my 9 miler, I am sure I will be fine (I hope).

So, since I have not been able to do anything, I have been reading Harry Potter, and shopping online. Yes, scary I know.

Anyway, my dd16 and I are officially registered for TOT. I am not sure we will make any of the meets, since we will most likely fly in on Sat and leave Sun or early Mon. I am sure we will get to see many of you at the race. I am really looking forward to this weekend with my dd.

Kim, that is great you are coming our way. I hope the beautiful weather holds out for you. Are you coming this weekend or the one after?

Take care,
Maggie
