Wk of July 15--WISH Walking/Running Club

Howard[/B] - I have thyroid issues also. My endocrinologist told me last year the new high is 3.7. I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv, but I just wanted to throw that out there. I personally function MUCH better as close to a 1 as I can get. So, when I am up to about a 3, they up my dose. Here's to more Synthroid! :thumbsup2

I play thyroid doctor all day, every day (except for those few patients where I still get to dabble in osteoporosis ;) ) 'Normal' is controversial in the thyroid world. Most labs still say up to 5 is ok, but the thyroid specialty organizations are pushing to lower that to 3 for the general population. For folks who are treated with thyroid meds, keeping levels between 0.3 and 2.5 is recommended with some exceptions. But, we treat the patients not just the numbers, so the rules aren't hard and fast. Best thing is when you have a patient like Kristi who has an idea of where levels feel best for them.

Back to your regularly scheduled training thread :surfweb:

Craig...glad to see your class is going well. Thanks for the advice. I'm just looking for occasional lectures, so hopefully it won't be too involved. I'm not ready to quit clinical practice yet, though I think full-time academia might be cool down the road.

Heeeeeyyyyyy...I thought I was the biggest whiner :rolleyes1 Seems like many of us are having a tough time with training this summer. :grouphug:

Monica...thanks for the hint on water walking with PF. I know SWDave had good results with 'swogging' when he was injured last year.

WWDave...:wizard: for your board exams!

Krista...thanks for your concern :) I am dropping back to R3/W2 for the 12 this weekend.

Angie...glad to see you back! If I'd known you guys were out in that storm too last night, I could've picked you up when I went out for DH ;)

lou...fitting everything in can be tough! I found myself slipping into my old, bad habit of not stretching today because I was trying to get my run in before the family got home and I needed to start dinner.

I did do 3.75 easy miles on the TM today in 50:38. No hip or foot twinges until after the run, which is better than Monday where I only got in 35 min. Looking forward to the new Harry Potter book coming out so I have something to read on the TM, although, those books are usually too big to comfortably fit on the TM :wizard:

Two miles on the TM and 10 min on the spin bike and feet are pain-free!!!! Tomorrow I'm with my trainer who will show no mercy so it should put my new shoes and new orthotics to the test. Let's hope they continue to do well.

Monica: how are your orthotics working out?

Jen: :rotfl2: oh man! I know it's not funny but it would have been rather comical to see you in a panic trying to find another insert for your shoe!

Kathy: good luck to Lynn at the Iron Man competition this weekend! I hope you get your runs in this weekend. What's the weather like in Lake Placid? Shouldn't it be fairly nice to run?

Dana: :wizard: for your shins and to feel better!

Mel: I hope things work out with the adjunct position; I'm glad to hear you're starting to get some workouts in. :wizard: for that hip and foot!

Angie: :cool1: to Bobby running with you!!!!

Minnie: sure, rub it in, why don't you.

MSDave: good to see you! Hope things get quieter soon and you're able to join us again. We're lookin' out for you!!!

Kristi: and I got my 100 crunches in. My crunches probably took much less time than your yoga but you probably got more out of the yoga than I got out of the crunches.

WWDave: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: on your exam!!

Krista: :wizard: best I can do for luck with orthotics!

Carrie: you still did the run so you should be pleased with that!

HMHunters: 30 min is an easy workout?

Howard:  I know you'll get your medication under control and you'll feel better. It's good to know what was wrong and that it can be fixed relatively easily.

Judy: how's the foot today?

Laurie: hey--way to go on the distance!! Hope you didn't get too hurt in the hockey game!!!

As always, Calcio: :love2:

I hope everyone has a great evening!

I'm coming out of lurkdom to report that I may have discovered one of the root causes of my strange hip/thigh/calf/foot pain that I have been dealing with lately. I have been reading The Triiger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies and got to the section about Morton's foot last night. For those of you who don't already know, Morton's foot occurs when the second metatasal is longer than the first. (It doesn't necessarily mean that your second toe is longer than the first, although sometimes that also happens)This can cause all sorts of foot and leg problems and is easily resolved by placing a small pad under the head of the first metatarsal only. I am going to give this a try while I keep working on my trigger points, which really seems to be helping with the pain.

Howard - Good luck w/your thyroid problem, my DH has been dealing w/the same issue for years!

For those of us suffering w/PF, I may have a w/out that might help. I've been water walking and it is really helping with the pain. Today I walked for 1.5 hours and I mixed up the w/out by using water dumbbells, for a upper body w/out, then I switched to water jogging. I dusted off my water shoes and said, "why not?". It seems to be helping. Try it out and let me know if you feel a difference.:cutie:

I'm also a PF sufferer... what is the water jogging? Are you running in a swimming pool? I've been taking "Coral Calcium" my mom heard Paul Harvey advertise it- but then I went and googled it, its 500 mg a pill - and your body cant absorb more than 500 at a time, so you need to take it 3X a day! That is so hard to do! BUT it has significantly helped my PF - I also have inserts, and of course I cant be happier with my New Balance 850 Stability shoes!! I was shocked at the difference they made!! I also do those strength stretching foot exercises- not sure if its the combo, but its a huge difference... HUGE!!

Thanks for posting the thyroid, I probably should have mine checked - I'm always tired, and I have gained so much wait in the last 6months... (and I have an aunt that was diagnosed... it always reminds me - last time my aunt made me get my checked... the doc says "well Mrs. M... you're thyroid is fine, but congratulations are in order... you are pg!" DD is ten now!!
(I know I cant be pg now tho!! LOL)

Laurie--:bday: !!!! We are birthday buddies, mine is tomorrow!!!! party:

Happy pre Birthday!!

Thanks everyone for their kind words... the nice thing about the "whining" it really doesnt last- this medium however sometimes slights that... I moved on!! :dance3: Not sure if I posted here or on the WISH Peep thread.. I'm trying very, very hard to stay away from negative self talk... I just need to finish this!! To believe in me!! Thanks for updating the calendar... I'm not aprehensive about my first race... EVER... not yet anyway!! I'm looking forward to it!! I've been running here by the lake and imagining what the Montrose Harbor will look like!! (on vacation visiting my parents in Angola IN)

Its all good!! :)

OK Meghan, let us know how that works... right now I'm staring at my feet... and of course my 2nd toe is longer... as is my dad's!! ;)

OK Meghan, let us know how that works... right now I'm staring at my feet... and of course my 2nd toe is longer... as is my dad's!!

According to this book, 1 in 4 people have a longer second metatarsal. An excerpt from this secton of the book is available here: http://www.triggerpointbook.com/mortons.htm. I checked the book out from the library and liked it so much that I ended up buying a copy from Amazon.com.

Ugh, I've had one of those, let's call it, "Character building days" During my "easy" 3 mile run today I had pain all up and down one leg--from little toe to my hip:confused3 What's up with that? Then dealt with crazy kids. After that I proceeded to break the glass in a new POSTER size frame I just bought this am--burnt my hand on the stove and cut my other had on a can of artichokes! Now I'm sitting here and my sciatica pain is back in full force in the leg that felt okay this morning.:sad2: AAAAAHHHHH!!!!! Okay, whining over!

Leana--Happy Belated Bday!

Krista--Happy Early Bday!

Now off to drown my sorrows and pain in some cookie dough ice cream and a Miller Lite!

I play thyroid doctor all day, every day (except for those few patients where I still get to dabble in osteoporosis ;) )
I was hoping you'd chime in - and I was hoping what I said was correct! :rotfl: I just think back to years ago when my old primary would tell me that my TSH was just a bove a 5, and 5 was normal. So, she wouldn't up my meds. Ugh. I went up quite a few pounds during those years and all she would say was "losing weight is hard." Talk about making you feel even worse! I was so happy when I went to the endo and he tried to get me as low as he could without going hyperthyroid. So, now we just keep me close to 1. I think I'd like to go hyperthyroid for a bit & drop 10 lbs. though. ;) :rotfl:

I did some xt at Target tonight. I got a head start on some Christmas & birthday shopping. Gosh, I love their 50% & 75% off clearance! :woohoo:

Hi all,

I am so glad that I continue to breeze through the threads. It was great to read "character building" otherwise I wouldn't have know what happenend to me today. I dragged my dd16 out for a walk with me. I was due for 6 miles and we bargened down to 4 miles. I say bargained, because I was keeping up with the walk even though every ounce of me wanted to blow it off and see the Harry Potter movie like she was trying to convince me of doing. Anyway, I fibbed how long it was around the park and got her to walk an extra mile with me :rotfl2:. We ended with about a 5 mile walk. It must have been the humidity, but I was dragging my butt home during mile 5. Ofcourse dd looked as if she could float the way home. She was so energetic. Anyway, I realized I was "character building" :cool1:

Maggie

p.s. We are seeing the movie tomorrow night! I got a sitter for ds5/3. Cheers to the fact that she wants to hang with me 2 days in a row :thumbsup2

Oh, and my back is much better after yoga. Luckily I have some time off before I am back at work. thanks to all the concerned posts.

Kathy, glad to see your post. How is that shoulder? I'm happy that Lynne is finished with the schooling and can now get on with the life stuff now. Sounds like Erin is keeping overly busy. You ladies sure do keep at it all. Give Lynne a high five for luck this weekend.

Mel, glad that you are back to feeling better. WISHing that continues.

Stephanie, go to sleep. Tomorrow has got to be a better day! :wizard:

WWDave, glad the ordeal is over and hope the wait is quick and brings good news.

DH and I made it to the trail for a trek tonight. It was so hot/humid that we both had a bit of a slogging time. I'm tired now so will be packing it in as tomorrow is happening earlier than I want.

Meghan, thanks for the book recommendation...hey! no lurking here. Come on in!

Good night, pleasant dreams!

so here I am popping in here to take my mind off work for five minutes - and what is the subject of feature I am avoiding writing - thyroids!!!

Anyway, just a quick update: Craig, sadly we haven't made it to the States, we moved from NZ to Australia - Sydney in fact, although I haven't yet found 42 Wallaby Way!!!

lourodirigis: I used Hal Higdon to get me round the marathon, I found it great - I actually ran less times per week than I would have normally but I had no problems on teh day. I'm using it again for the Goofy moving the long weekday run to the Saturday and doing the recommended run on Sunday, that then only gives me two short runs in the week - psychologically I like that as it's seems managable, but anyone think it's a bad idea?

Anyway, as you've all reminded me that I'm not doing what I'm supposed to, I'm off - not much to report trainingwise anyway, taking it a bit easy this week. It's the last week I can really, got a 14km race Aug 12, half Sept 23rd, half Oct 28th then Goofy so I'm enjoying my last week of rest for six months. Helen

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

OK, I'm trying to catch up with everyone, but I still haven't read much of the past two weeks threads.

WWDave- No, I didn't see the Mouse Skywalker avatar you found. I'd love to see it if you don't mind reposting it.

Krista- Happy Birthday!!!

OK, last I really posted was back before July 4th. The family and I were going back to DW's father's and step-mother's cottage on a lake on the PA/OH border for the weekend. We were there from the 4th until Friday, July 6th. We met up with DW's brother's family there too. That was all OK, I got a 8 mile run in while I was there too.

We came back on Friday because I had to go into the lab on Saturday, July 7th. DW needed to get ready for part two of our "vacation" as well. Little did I know this would be the vacation from hell... From Sunday, July 8th - Sunday, July 15th we were planning on going to the Finger Lakes for our annual family gathering down there. DW's mother was coming to our house on Saturday, July 7th to go grocery shopping for the upcoming week. It's been getting tougher and tougher for this trip to be enjoyable. DW's mother rents a cottage there and our family, DW's brother's family, DW's sister, and sometimes DW's grandmother all go down and gather. It has been getting so there's too many people there in one cottage, and it's not really very relaxing and enjoyable anymore.

This year we decided to do something different. We decided that I would stay at home and meet the family down there in the middle of the week. That way it would be one less person in the cottage, one less opinion thrown in the mix, and DW wouldn't have to worry about how I was doing dealing with all of her family. That seemed like a good plan. Plus, if I didn't go to the lake, I could run the Utica Boilermaker 15K on Sunday, July 8th.

On Saturday, July 7th, DW broke down. She came downstairs in tears because she was so stressed and upset about the upcoming week at the lake with her family. The tipping point for this was her realization that she would have to drive down by herself, unload the van at the lake, and most likely unload her mother's car at the lake too. This is a lot of work, a lot of hauling up lots of steps and a big hill. It really is a big job, and DW has some health trouble that has her legitmitely concerned whether she can really do it. I held her for a time while she just cried. At that point, I decided NOT to run my race on Sunday, July 8th. I would help load the van, drive everyone down to the lake, unload the van, unload her mother's car and drive back.

So I did not run the Utica Boilermaker 15K on Sunday, July 8th. I was a little dissapointed. It was the first time I did not run a race I paid to register for. Plus, I paid for a bus trip our local Fleet Feet organized for the 4 hour round trip drive from Rochester to Utica. I was a little dissapointed losing my registration fee and the money I paid for the bus, but that's OK I didn't mind if it would help my DW's piece of mind. However, it does make me wonder what kind of vacation is this if it's so stressful that I can't go the whole week, and my DW is breaking down in tears the day before going. That's not my idea of a vacation for sure.

Sunday, July 8th, I drive the family down to the lake, unload the van, unload MIL's car, and DW's brother's family shows up - so I help unload their van too. I hang out for a little while. Go for a quick swim (in frigid water) to rinse the sweat off me, eat a quick dinner, hit the road to head back at 7pm, and get back to Rochester around 8:30pm.

Monday, July 9th I go to work - normal day, nothing unusual going on. I get home at 5pm, head out for a run at 5:30pm, and get back to the house around 6:30-7:00p. I'm in the basement changing out of my sweaty running clothes and I hear the phone ring. I figure it's DW just calling to check in, and I'll let the machine get it, I'll finish changing, and call her back. The machine picks up, it is DW but she is sobbing, in tears, asking me to come down and get her that she can not take it anymore. Oh No!!! She hangs up, my cell phone rings, it's DW, I run upstairs to get it but miss the call. Our home phone rings again, I pick up (mind you I have very little clothing on). I talk to DW briefly to calm her down, tell her I'll put clothes on and call her back.

I put clothes on, jump in the car, call DW back on my cell phone, and tell her I'm on my way to the lake. Evidently, DW had a HUGE fight with her brother that ended with him yelling at her "well if it's so bad why don't you call your absent husband to pick up you and your kids and go home!" Whoa, where did that come from? I get down to the lake, DW's been shut in her bedroom by herself. The girls come running to me saying they don't want to leave. I say I need to talk to DW to see what's going on. We have a big sit down talk with DW's brother and his wife at which point he get's really irrate and yells at DW about how she is equating him with her father and blaming him (brother) for everything bad her father has ever done. DW loses it, says she can't stay, we grab the kids and go home. The girls are in tears, DW's in tears, everyone cries all the way back home. We get back about 10:00p and put the kids to bed. DW's brother has left two messages on our answering machine apologizing and asking us to come back to the lake. Uugh, way too much family drama...

Now it's Tuesday, July 10th in the morning, I need to get into work. I stay while DW calls back down to the cottage to talk with her family. DW's brother apologizes, they work things out, and he offers to drive up to pick her and the girls up and bring them back down to the lake. I go off to work, and everything get's back to some normality after that.

I decide at that point that my family needs a real vacation just for us. DW has been talking for a long time that she wants to go on a cruise. So I start looking for affordable cruises I could get for us for our own vacation at the end of the summer.

On Wednesday, July 10th, I head down to the lake to rejoin the family. I've now driven back and forth to the lake way too many times... The rest of the week is relatively uneventful, but there's a lot of tension in the air and everyone's on pins and needles.

So, that's my story, and why I haven't been on the boards too much. Nothing major was going on, but just a whole lot of family drama. Between traveling, being at places with no internet, and when I'm home trying to get caught back up with work, I haven't had anytime to even look at the boards. Oh, and when I was on the computer, I was searching for cruise ideas for my family.

Guess what? I found one... I found a cruise our family could afford. It's a 4 day Caribbean cruise on the Royal Caribbean Sovereign of the Seas from Aug 27-Aug 31 out of Port Canaveral. Yesterday, DW asks me "so how much would a cruise cost? I think our family really needs a vacation for ourselves." I print out the confirmation/reservation information I had, hand it to her, and say "Here's an early birthday present." Her birthday is Sept. 9th, and the cruise is my present to her.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I'm so sorry I made people worry here. Thanks for reading this family drama, and I promise to be back to posting regularly again soon.

Oh, and Carrie, it is DW's brother that lives in Ann Arbor, and we've been talking about running the Crim 10 miler together in Flint in August. Uuum, that's not going to happen now - plus it happens to be the same weekend we leave for our cruise. Oh well, sorry brother...

Mouse, dude. Scroll back up a bit and look at the post Kristi did and you will see the Mouse SkyWalker Avatar. I don't remember who it was but someone put your name on it. There is somewhere you can find it but I don't remember where she said you could get it. Dang I hate being senile.

I'm off in a bit for a long walk. I need a pick me up this moning.

Dave:hippie:

Happy Birthday Krista and Laurie!!!!!!

SWDave - Oh, my...You definitely have an excused absence. ;) This makes the two consecuteive wekends with my look like paradise. :grouphug: Way to go on scheduling the cruise. Sounds like it's much needed. :wizard: That DW gets the break she needs.

Stephanie - :wizard: for a better day today!

Does 2 hours wanderign at the fair count as XT? I'm guessing teh cotton candy kind of deteracts, but it really was for medicinal purposes. I knew it was meant ot be when the bag was still warm. Yummy!

OK, back to it today. If teh break in huidity comes throuhg, I'll hit the bike path. If not, it'll be in the pool today.

DaveSW--:grouphug: to you and your family. What a terrible ordeal to go through. The vacation sounds like just the thing your family needs. We decided to take a weekend getaway next weekend for the fam. We needed a trip as well, that didn't revolve around a race of some sort. Sorry to hear that you missed your race--but they'll be others; you DW really needed you.

Kristi--wow, xmas shopping already???? You are so on the ball! I see you enjoy my kind of xtraining!

Well, gotta go get ready for the day. Got 6 miles scheduled this am and then tennis camp for DD this afternoon. Have agreat Thursday all! Oh, and thanks for letting me whine last night--I"m feeling much better today

SwDave Kudos to you and your wife... it sure sounds like the family drama we've put up with - no kidding! This year, my dh stayed home, my kids stay here at the cottage on a different week (and with their friends!) and db stayed in Texas... unfortunately our last "family" gathering here didnt end so well, and my db didnt call me - so we've never worked it out... sad that. I often think of mailing him a card to let him know I do think the world of him... but that drama... its overwhelming!!

We had lots and lots of rain today - I love weather.com interactive map with satellite images!! Very addicting! DH has been riding his bike to work to get in some xtraining, got to the grocery store to pick up some dinner (I'm still at the cottage) and he got caught in a huge downpour, so he camped out at Starbucks ate his meal, read the paper and called me - I looked at the map seeing a huge red splotch heading his way in about 15 min or less - and he got home before the big one hit!!

I lost my Hal Higdon print out ( my mom keeps cleaning!!) I think I just need to do 2.5 miles today? I'm going to try and do another 3 - that way the 5 miler on Sunday wont seem so daunting? (3 miles is the furthest I've ever run, I keep trying to tell myself to go it a little farther - but havent broken through the barrier yet! going from 2 to 3 took a change in scenery - but it wasnt bad... I think dh will coach me thru the Sunday run... ok wog!! *grin)

Kristi- I love that Jedi Mickey picture in your siggy. Can you send me a copy? Also, is this the big Target toy clearance? Because I've been wanting to do some x-mas shopping x-training too.

Everyone can add me to the hypothyroid club too. My Dr. just upped my synthroid dose as well.

Finally, thanks everyone for the good WISHes as I deal with my family drama. Sounds like a lot of people hear know what I'm talkin' about.

Stephanie, I wasn't too upset about missing my race. Like you said, there'll be other races, and I'm fine trying to help my DW through a difficult time.

OMG Dave what drama. Glad to hear all is worked out. Have you cruised before you will love it. BTW....I thought that was you over on another board I frequent, I use a different user name there. I hope you and your family enjoy your cruise.!!!!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAURIE AND KRISTA!!!!!!!

Helen: A friend of mine's daugther was just accepted in a teaching program in Australlia (sp) It is in Newcastle. Do you know where that is?

The Running Room's in Canada held a 20 min challenge last night, it was really neat ( not sure if they have these stores in the US) anyways. I have never joinned in their group walks but last night DD and I decided since we where there we would do it. Anyways they split the walkers into 3 different pace groups, 1 being fastest. So DD and I went to 2 cause I wasn't sure what they faster pace was.....well.....we had to run up and join the Pace 1 group as our pace was so much faster.....I felt awesome about my walking pace...!!!!!

To everyone else hope training is going well, sorry I am a bit swamped this morning so I haven't had a chance to totally catch up.

have a great day all.

Kim

Hi Kim- No, we've never cruised before, and yes, I was trying to get some information on the Cruise Critic boards. I'm feeling a little out of my element regarding the cruise - so any information you might have would be hugely appreciated.
