Sunny - the boy is riding in a perception aloha (it is actually a sit-on-top wave surfer). He paddles for about 25-50 meters and then he is just a rider. We generally go out for about 4 miles round trip. He hasn't dropped the paddle yet, but i'm sure it's coming. You can get a paddle leash to mount to the boat, but the whole leash to the boat thing really stresses me out as it has a cable or string that goes from the boat to the paddle and I get nervous about it getting wrapped around him some how. It is really easy to pull him if he sits in the seat of the kayak. It is really difficult to tow him if he dangles his feet, sticks his hands in or sits right up in front w/ his arms in the water! (Guess where he sits!) I'm sure you have formed a mental picture at this point! After last friday (really hard towing) I had some pretty bad back pain for 3 days. It didn't ease up until wed. morning, when I promptly loaded up and went out with mr. wiggles again! This time (it was an "aha" moment as I figure out what was hurting my low back) I paddled easier and slower and took ibuprophen when I got home! At the end of yesterday's paddle trip, he proclaimed (from a supine position) "whew, after all this kayaking, I think I got my exercise today" Ah, parenthood

Oh, BTW, the little boat he has is incredibly stable and he can get back on it if he falls off in the middle of the water. That is just too much info isn't it? Also, about watches, I just use a cheap timex ironman (i think it may have a 30 lap function). It is nice to take instead of the garmin on routes you already know b/c you can keep the splits and it is a lot smaller.
Evil Queen - don't read the following:
Kevin - I thought of you today. I swam 1 mile and then planned a 10 mile run (88 deg, 55% humid - feels like 92) anyway, I was doing an out and back and turned around at 4 1/2 b/c I didn't think i could get back to my car if i went any further so 10 turned into 9 and w/ a 12:01 pace (generally I would average in the low 10's on a training run) I knew you'd sympathize w/ me!!!
Lynn - OK, I cannot find a 1/2 ironman training program on the internet anywhere (for free that is) I have about 5 weeks left. This week on Tues, I rode 45 miles at a avg of 16.5mph (it seems slow, but it is basically a 6.5 mile super hilly loop so my ride times on normal terrain would be better and the 1/2 has some hills to start and finish but not in the middle) Wed I was planning to rest but my friend who just had a baby asked me and the boy to go kayaking, hence the boy towing kayak workout on Wed. Today I swam a mile (42mins-that is about normal for me-i know i'm slow, but....) then after a 40 min break (to go to the store to get gels and get to my run route) I ran 9 miles in the heat of the day. I did a lot of walking on the run as i could not stay cool, but I was figuring between a 12 and 13mpm pace on the run for the 1/2 anyway (my best half time is around 2:10, but I'm pretty sure I can't do that after the swim and bike in the summer!) So basically all of that info is to ask.... Do you think I can do it? Is that enough base? I'm planning on a 7hr or a little more finish. What do you think??? Did you notice I have issues w/ run-on sentences?
