Cam and Howard, I so enjoy your recent exchange and excitement of your news and support of each other. It is refreshing.

Lily -- This was just so incredibly sweet of you! Howard and I know, probably more than many couples, how lucky we are to have each other. We went through so much to be together at the beginning of our relationship and faced so many challenges that we think of every day as a blessing. :cloud9:

Good luck with the race for the taste in October. The 10K course on that day is "sort of" the last 10K of the full Marathon. The race for the taste differs in 2 ways. First, it starts on the road in front of the sports complex, goes north, and turns left, and at about 1 mile or so it comes to the 20.5 mile mark of the full marathon. Second the RFTT follows an entrance ramp to the left, then makes a very sharp right, and enters the Studios from the back (south) side, through roads and then into the Car Stunt Show area (the full marathon follows an entrance ramp to the right, up and to the right again, and enters the Studios from the north behind the Tower of Terror). After that RFTT winds through the Studios, and once you are on Main Street from then on it follows the PRECISE path as the marathon. Yes, knowing all of this part on will help you on January 7, 2007. Particularly when you realize how far it is around the EPCOT lake. On a cool day of vacation getting around that lake is pretty easy. At mile 25 it feels like an episode of The Twilight Zone, as you keep running but the finish line seems to be further and further away. :happytv: Do do do do.

Howard

Congratulations to you. The best advice I can give you is that few or none of the topics in an MBA program are particularly difficult intellectually. Almost all of it is straight forward and makes intuitive sense, particularly to an adult with real world and work experience. Well maybe except for Microeconomic and Macroeconomic theory, which can get pretty abstract depending on the professor, and Operations Research which is pure quant stuff. The workload, however, is absolutely enormous, as all MBA programs really work the students. You cannot work undergraduates too hard or they'll complain all the time and no one wants to hear 20 year olds whine :teeth: . In contrast MBA students are adults, who chose this path, so you can really work them hard, and they clearly see the payoff of the hard work. Plan on feeling underwater almost immediately when you see the course syllabi and the assignments. One good example of this is an intermediate accounting elective in an undergraduate program is 2 semesters. The same intermediate accounting elective in an MBA program covers the same material in 1 semester. Be prepared to run fast.

As an aside, last week Martha and I were climbing Peak 8 above Breckenridge, to its stated summit of 12,998 but we believe and like our GPS reading of 13,031 better. From 11,000 to 12,000 feet it's really steep, and those of us from sea level need to stop every minute to breath. Martha asked me if it got easier. My response was, "no, the last 1,000 feet is a lot steeper, and you also have to deal with 3 rock fields which are really hard to get through." Her reaction was, "you're not helping me with those comments." I recovered by telling her "okay it's a tough hike, but doable."

You will find the MBA program tough, but definately doable. After you do the work, even though it is a lot, you'll find yourself sitting at the commencement ceremony feeling pretty darn good about yourself.

If you have any generic questions about MBA program life. Feel free to contact me at stephenson@babson.edu. Short questions about finance are also fair game. You're of course welcome to ask questions in other disciplines but don't expect correct answers  .

Good Morning Team! :surfweb:

I had a breakthrough yesterday. I went out for a run AFTER putting the princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:, to bed. It was a busy day at work, and I couldn't get out there afterwards so I told myself that I would run in the evening. I didn't feel like getting out there, but I did it. AND, I had a good run. I did my run/walk plan on the track, and did 3.65 miles in 42:20 min/11:36 mpm pace. My shin felt OK. Not great, but certainly not any worse either.

One other thing I realized is that at the end of this week I've been training for 6 full months - from the end of January to the end of July. Admittedly the month of June I was in the pool most of the time, but I've stuck with this exercise regimen now for longer than I have in years. Thank you all for your help and support!!!

Congratulations Howard!!! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :cool1: Good luck on your new MBA program, and I hope everything works out with getting into the Corporate Associates program too!!!

Denny :welcome: Sorry, I don't have any L/XL WISH team socks left. I do have lots of s/m socks left though if that would fit you.

Tracey :welcome:

Kelley :welcome: I agree with what others have said. At least you were out there walking. You'll figure out what works for you as far as what to eat or what time of day you exercise the best.

monte - I sure hope everything works out that you can make it to WDW in January. My wife has similar concerns about being able to afford the trip to Disney. I've been saving and saving so the trip shouldn't make too much of a hit to our family budget, but yes, there is always the thought/conflict that the saved money could be used for something else like college funds, etc.

Amy - WTG on your 5K!!!

Lily - Good to see you here too! You're the reason I'm here. I remember you sending me the message directing me to this group. So because of you, I've reinvigorated my exercise program!!!

Cam - Wow! 7 mile LW! Great for you, and incredible pace too!!! Yes, you were definitely running out there. WTG!!!

Craig - Are you back from Colorado or posting from there?

OK, off to do my leg exercises. Have a great day all!!!

Well today is an off day. As soon as they post class assignments at the school, we are off to Atlanta. I am originally from there, so I love every chance we get to go back. And I love sharing Atlanta with my kids. We have a Braves game tonight (the last time my dad drug me to a game Parker was 2, it was a middle of the day game, end of July & I was 4 months pregnant. Hot & misserable.) I made sure to verify this was a night game! Tomorrow we go to the aquarium which I've heard is awesome! (of course this is when step sis come into the picture) and then Sunday the zoo, which I know the kids will love (and step sis is not spending the night so she wont be there, BONUS!)

DH & I went out & bought a new dig camera last night. Ours is 3 yrs old so its ancient in the world of technology plus is takes horrible pics in artificial light, takes great ones outside, but so does a disposable camera. The one we got has image stabilization which means that when I take pics when walking (say along a race course thru a them park :) ) then the pic shouldnt be blurry. It is also more compact & better fits in my fanny pac. I am so excited to try it out this weekend!

Dave-I am so impressed that you got out there last night! WTG  that's dedication!

Cam-Man you were flying last night! That pace is awesome! :cool1:

Jodi-I saw several people in sports bras for the Minnie (I think it was too cold at the 1/2 this year) I think they are fine to wear, its sports apparel, not a bikini.

Kristi-great pace on your 4 miler! The heat & humidity is definatly messing with my pace!

I will miss you guys this weekend! Have a good one!

good morning everyone.

Cam, I must say that your 7 mi long walk pace is an inspiration to me. Now that I know someone else can get to the low-13's, maybe I can, too.

Thanks!

Dave

Good work yesterday in your workout. Remember it's still July so build slow and easy on those sore legs. Right now pace matters little since you're trying to both rehab and build.

I am back in New England, returned on Monday. I'd like to get 7-8 miles today, but there is more moisture in the air today than in the harbor. I don't do well at all when running in heat and humidity (translation = blow up all over the course), so I'll probably do it inside and air conditioned on the treadmill. Dull, dull, deadly dull.

I am looking forward to mid-September when I'll be running in cooler and drier weather. I'm always amazed during that first run when conditions are ideal, and I get the totally excellent trio of longer, faster, and less effort. Too bad it's 50 or so days away.

Good luck with the legs.

Craig

Thanks Craig- I am being very slow and deliberate in my running, and trying not to do too much too fast. My PT told me to make sure I have 48 hours rest in between wogs outside (with impact). So my routine has been to run/walk outside, next day deep water run (no impact), and 3rd day rest. So today I'm back to the pool, and tomorrow I'll have a rest day. Last night during my run/walk I built to jogging 3 laps in a row. The runs have actually been surprisingly easy. I guess all that pool work did keep my fitness level up. During the jogging bits I'm easily doing 10 mpm pace or less. A lot of the time I look at my Garmin and I'm doing sub-10 mpm. I then intentionally try to slow up so I'm around 10 mpm. My goal is to be able to run 3 miles straight, pain free, by the end of August. That will also work well with my x-country series I'm running Thursday nights in August. I'm going to start the series running and walking, and each week I'll add on a little more running. I'm hoping by the last week I'll be able to run (easy) the whole thing pain free. Then I should be in good shape to start my full marathon training.

Morning WISH Team,

Thanks for all the inspiration you are providing to me. Last night TM did not happen. I let another obligation interfere and then I was just plain too tired and went to bed. Saturday our group steps off at 6:15 prompt! They are doing 11-12 miles. I will do half. Their races are coming up soon, I'm still playing.

Dave, I am so proud of you that you have kept up through all your difficulty. You most certainly are an inspiration to many.

Craig, great to have you here with us. I must say though, mini/macro economics--Eeeyyeeewwwww! It did/does interest me, but whew! I need an interpreter by my side for that ALL the time.
:teeth:
Cam, congrats on your accomplishment. Will you take a moment to reflect about last year at about this time to this year. Do you feel the difference? I was amazed at myself as the time progressed from one year to the next at how much different, in a good way, things became while I was out on the trail. I did a good amount of pool work last year and wonder if that was the big difference or if it was that the more you keep at it the better it gets.

I've got to find time to make a calendar for myself if I am going to work toward the January goal. I'm stalling on it since the final determination of my going is not made yet. I am in a boat similar to Monte about retirement. We are planning on my retirement next year. (Eek, I should be retired by this time in a year! It takes away my breath when I think of what I am about to do.) I have several options to explore yet, being if I will retire and volunteer time, work part-time, or be the stay-at-home-wife (something I've never been). Anyway with the reduction in pay I have been facing this year and our plans for next year the January trip may not be.

Currently I am half-heartedly pursuing all this. I am registered for the event, I did get approval yesterday for the time off I need to go. Now Ted and I have to really sit down and discuss.

Have a great weekend and keep on keepin' on!

Thunder, thunder, thunderation!
We're the WISH Team delegation.
When we move with determination,
We create a GREAT sensation!

MelR and Sunny - I just ordered a pack too from Sierra Trading Post. I've been wanting to get one for a while. MelR I got #82907 - Ultimate Direction Solitaire HHS Hydration Pack (in green of course to match my shirt and socks). Sunny- I ordered it through your Sunnyshopper site - so I hope you get an extra $0.10 kick back to help with your trip. I hope your back is doing a little better too.

Craig - As always your words are on target and inspirational no matter which discipline you are referring to. When I first began my MBA I will admit to feeling like I jumped off a cliff with no parachute.... It got better though and I am now one course away from moving on to my area of emphasis which I cannot wait for. Howard it's overwelming at first but it get's better!! Best of luck to you!!!!! :cheer2:

Cam - Wow girl you were moving there! That is a great pace, I remember last year when you worried about the sweepers. Awesome job Cam!

Tiff - Last Dec I had a work function in Atlanta and we went to the Aquarium. We really enjoyed it! I would highly suggest that you order your tickets online in advance though.

Dave - I am so glad to here that your shins are doing better :goodvibes

I am going to be MIA until next week sometime - busy, busy, busy! And I know I promised to play catch-up today, but I am so excited, I can't sit still to read and take notes this morning!

My sister (LOVE HER) - won me front row tix to the Goo Goo Dolls for next Tuesday night! She wins things all the time on the radio and certainly pulled this one off for me. Thank goodness she doesn't like them. So, not only do I get to go backstage before the show and hug Johnny - I get to go out and watch them from the front row! :faint:

Here's me & Chad meeting them in '99 - not the best pic, but certainly proof it happened. And how did Chad get between me & my 'boyfriend' anyway? :scratchin

The tall guy on the right in the white t-shirt is their drummer, Mike. He runs ultra marathons! (see - this post is running-related!)

CONGRATS HOWARD!

Have a great weekend guys!

Tell me...is it possible to die from humidity? I am incredibly exhausted. :crazy2: Having said that, I did have a great, very strong training session this morning. :thumbsup2 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1% then 5 min jogging @ 4.5 @ 1%. I felt very strong doing it. Then I went outside and did stable chores for an hour and a half. By the time I came in the house at 8:00 I was shot. Soaking wet from sweat and ready to go back to bed. Oh this weather is wearing me out!

Tomorrow morning I have my first post-Tuscany weigh-in at WW. I know this will be disastrous. :sad2: WW just isn't working for me this time and I don't know why.

Carrie - Thanks for the story! I'm SURE it wasn't any of you guys that ran into the wall! Charlie and I did the Segway tour last June the day before we got married. At first I just could not get it! Then I made myself laugh by saying - out loud, mind you - "Feeeeeel the Force" :yoda: and when I laughed I relaxed and after that I was fine. I think the trick is not to try to hard on those things.

Tracey - Welcome! :welcome: This is a great group! You'll learn so much from everyone. OK, well, maybe not me. I'm good at asking the beginner questions. :teeth:

Cam - Holy Toledo! :worship: You are BOOKING! You're doing those splits at a WALK? You must walk so incredibly fast! Oh man.....I better get my rear in gear! I'm falling waaaay behind!

Dave - Whoo hoo! :woohoo: That is fab-u-lous! I'm so happy for you! I considered that waist pack too. I really didn't know which one to get, but I thought the smaller one would make my backside look petite. (Insert hysterical laughter here). :lmao:

I have to work on a newsletter for a while then I will go over and update my "Who's doing Disney" thread. Looks like we have a LOT of people going!

Thank you so much everyone for the warm welcomes!! I am just soaking up all your advice and training techniques. I went out and bought Marathoning for Mortals based on a few WISHers advice. I am excited to start reading it.

This morning, I jogged 30 minutes on the TM for a total of 2.53 miles. That averages to 11.85 min per mile. (I forgot to check my time after each mile to get exact splits. Does a Garmin help with that?) The trouble is, I am TIRED after 30 minutes. Cardio-wise I could keep going, my legs just feel like lead. Should I slow my pace in hopes of increasing my time right now? I am just not sure what to do. Also, for cross training, I hear a lot of you mentioning jogging in the pool. Will that help with endurance? Is it just what it sounds like....jogging in deep water?

Thanks again for the wonderful support!!
Tracey

Hi Tracey- I'm doing the deep water running because I've been dealing with severe shin splints. The water running allows me to use all the same muscles as running on the roads without the impact. I'm doing it to allow my shins to heal. I have a life jacket on, am in water where I can't touch bottom, and I mimic all the same actions I would use while running outside. I don't know about helping with endurance. I have been doing long water runs of 60 minutes to try to not lose my fitness, but my usual workout is 30 minutes.

OK, now I have 2 questions for you Disney experts. I'm thinking about my dinner plans. I have a ressie for Whispering Canyon Cafe at WL for the night after the marathon (Sunday night). I thought it would be a good place for the kids to unwind. However, after reading a bunch of mixed reviews I'm questioning it. I can also get a ressie for dinner at O'hana's after the marathon. Do you think that would be a better place for the kids? So what do you all think for a nice celebratory dinner after the marathon - WCC or O'hana's?

Also, I have a b-fast reservation for 8:05a Sunday morning (of the marathon) for the rest of my family at Crystal Palace. My DD5 princess: Looooooooooooves Pooh. Will the family be able to see me run by during the marathon if they are in CP? I figure if I'm running 10 mpm, that would put me on Main Street near 8am. Or do you think that is trying too hard to arrange my Scream Team?

OK, I just changed my ressie to 9:05a Sunday morning. I was thinking my family could see me go by, and then go in and have their character experience. Now, I'm just wondering if they will be able to make it to see me at the Finish Line after breakfast. I would think so. If I can keep up a 10 mpm, I should be able to finish in 4 hours and 30 min. That means they would have to be at the finish line by 10:30a. Ooooh, maybe that is pushing it too much... :confused3

Dave, thank you for the quick reply about the water jogging. Wow, 60 minutes doing laps? I am sure you are keeping your fitness level up with that! I have problems with my shins when I run outdoors, but never when I treadmill. That is the one physical thing I am a little worried about when I start training outdoors after the weather cools down a little here in Houston.

Regarding WCC vs. Ohanas, we have done both twice. I think the mixed reviews about WCC are true. The amount of fun you have really depends on your server. The first time we went, our server was great and our kids had a lot of fun. The second time, our server was not playful at all, and it was just a basic bbq dinner, good but not great. We loved Ohanas both times however. My kids love the coconut races, there is enough variety in the dinner to please all of them, and it is a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. Plus, if you are lucky enough to get a table with a view of the castle, it's really magical. I would vote for Ohanas.

Tracey - I only do the 60 min long deep water run (I call it SWOG for swim jog) once/week usually on Saturday when I would do my long run. You know I am similar to you in that I have trouble with my shins outdoors on the roads but not on the treadmill either. I've been working hard to try to build up those muscles in my lower legs too, and also giving my legs lots of time to recover from the runs.

Thanks for the info about WCC vs. O'hana's - I think I'm leaning towards O'hana's now. Any other WISHers going to be there after the marathon?

Dave,
Thanks for the reply on the socks, but I don.t think S or M would work. Based on others' recommendations, I bought some socks at Target yesterday. They seem pretty thin, but hopefully they prevent blisters

Craig ~ Thanks for the supportive words about my upcoming plunge into Graduate work at the U of D. :teacher: I have been out of school for nine years. I don't expect to go in with a big head acting like I know everything... quite the contrary. I will be battling up hill for the whole year and trying to stay afloat. The Quantitative stuff will be my greatest challenge. It seems that it went by the wayside some time ago (at least according to the GMAT). I appreciate your offer for questions and will keep you in mind. However, I will only bother you in the direst of circumstances.

Minnie ~ Thank you for the support. It seems a few of us here have gone down this path before me. I am sure it willbe a comfort to me in the future. I am a hard worker and I will make the most of this opportunity.

Lilly ~ Thanks for the comments about Cam and Me. We are lucky to have each other.

BTW, since this is a running thread... I wanted to share my last few 5K times.

Another random post from me...

Just finished up week 1 of the beginner's half marathon program that takes me right up to the Disneyland half...
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,5033,s6-51-55-0-2197-3-1X3X6X8-5,00.html
Long run was a 4 miler to start and I was surprisingly relaxed, and did one hard 2 miler and one easy one tonight to finish off the week. Also hit a new low weight wise again temporarily after the long run, although a few have come back since then, surprise surprise. :) Gotta love weighing in after you drip off about 3 pounds...

The DW and I have a 5k coming up next Saturday in Pensacola Beach, where we'll both be trying to PR...

If you can already run a few miles twice a week + a long run of 4-5, and are running the Dland half, join me on that schedule, and we'll suffer together!
