Wk of Jul 16--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Walked 2.07 miles today on my tm and my time was 38 mins. EEK!!! :sad2: I better increase my speed, or the sweeper is going to get me come Jan.

Monte - the treadmill used to scare me half to death. I cannot go nearly as fast on the TM as I can outside!

Sunny
- I think they released a "marathon weekend" rate for the Swan last Sept. I forget how we found out about it, but I thought $149 was pretty good for there, and those beds are indeed heavenly! We always rent a car, or drive down, so I'm not sure about ME. I didn't like having to pay their daily parking fee though.

Please, please listen to your doctor and take it really easy for the time being. I know it's really hard for you to do, but in the long run it may be what your body truly needs to get better. And you need that body to get Goofy this winter, right?! Here's some more pixiedust:

Cecilia - :welcome:

I talked to Chad and I am pretty sure we are going to sign up for that Moose Run thing here at home. Sounds fun!

Of course, I didn't wog today. Life got in the way - errands on the way home, pediatrician appt., playdate - got home from park and put Zack to bed. So, now I can't go wog since DSS would be after me if I left a 3 year old home alone in bed.
that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! ;) we won't mention that there's an old, but very usable TM in my basement :rolleyes1 or that I could do a DVD or something else...

I am 'officially' training for the WDW half as of this week. I doubled up the weeks from MFM again this year because I was planning to train to run instead of run/walk. Because of the PF, I'm waaaay behind on the running thing...and I've been on the TM all week, so my pace is slooooow. I did 2.62 miles yesterday at a 15:16 pace. The good news is that I'm up to W5/R5. Looking forward to Sat for my LR...outside pace is at least a minute better.

:welcome: Cecilia!

Krista...happy belated birthday :bday:

Sunny... pixiedust: for your back...hope the MRI gets you some answers. Your 5K pics were great...good to see you running again!

Kristi...the Moose run looks cool!

Jodi...no worries...we all miss one now and again.

Cam...dorm decorating sounds like fun! There's much cooler stuff out than when I was an undergrad!

Dave...my mom says Swan and Dolphin have teacher discounts, if that would help. The full course goes right by there.

Sara...what a great surprise! When are you going?

Tiff...glad you may have found some answers! Hope you're feeling better soon!

Nancy...where ya been? How's the noodle soup? Happy belated birthday! :bday:

Carrie...good luck with those meetings! How's your family?

Just a reminder...if anyone's interested in a WISH team message bracelet, please check here: WISH team Message Bracelets

Hi to all! I had a crazy week last week with a camp at my church - I was there all day and then had to come home to my three kids and DH and try to exercise somewhere in there! Anyway, I didn't have much time for my posting enjoyment!

Helen - so sorry about your furry friend. They are so special.

Sunny - hoping that you can get some more specific info soon. How frustrating!

Cecelia - Welcome - I am a newbie myself! ;)

I actually did pretty well training last week. The highlight of the week was swimming almost an entire mile in one session with only 30 sec. rest after every 1/3 mi.

I also ran four miles which is the farthest I have ever gone. Boy, I still have a long way to go, but I am feeling a lot more positive. Tomorrow is a swim and run day. The humidity has been killing me even at night with running, but I figure it will be like this in Sept. in FL so it is good practice.

I bought a wicking running hat this week - guess what color it is??? GREEN!

Planning on posting more!

Bekah

Hi Everyone :wave2: ,

Okay, I actually fit in training tonight - whew, thank god.....I'm starting to feel the pressure with the months and how fast they are passing....got lots to do.

Anyhow, tonight I worked on the Ellipitical (w/diff. set on 5) for 20 minutes, approx. 2 miles (don't know if that counts for anything). Treadmill work: 5 miles with a slight incline.....I'm trying to find a comfortable spead for me to do the longer distances and it seems to be 5.1 - 5.3 pace....tonight on the threadmill I was using the 5.1 pace.

I hope to do a little bit better on my 5k Saturday....a little nervous about the weather, but I will make it through. :goodvibes

Well, I have to get going to bed - or else I will never get up in the morning! I will try and catch up with everyone tomorrow.

Have a great night everyone,

Jodi

Gulp...I just registered for the tri and the marathon. Is there a nervous smilie? ;)

Looking at this positively - I just effectively scheduled two trips to the happiest place on earth! YAY!!! :cool1: I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!

Bekah

G'Day all,

Sunny - great photos of you and your daughter, and I am keeping my fingers crossed for your back. A few posts earlier someone mentioned a architects desk....I can voucher for that. Back in 98 I sprained my back. (a whole other story but for a few hours I could not feel or move my legs - very scary). Anyway my point is.....I could walk, swim, stand, lay down etc but sitting really really hurt. 5 mins was about my maximum. I was on muscle relaxers, demerol etc but nothing helped. At work I used a drafting table that I could stand at, and I had a bar stool which I used every now and then for a few minutes to rest my legs. It really helped. At staff meetings I stood or paced, it was annoying and distracting for everyone else for the first 2-3 meetings, but then they got used to me.

On another topic - I bought new shoes and shorts yesterday. The guy at the running room was like "these have had it" about my current shoes. Well they have done two weekend to end cancers (60km each), and a half marathon, so there was a few miles on them.

I am now the proud owner of a pair of Saucony Hurricane 8's - they are very bright white!

I also bought a new pair of shorts - they are dual shorts. They have a lycra short to prevent chaffing etc, and then over the top is a "regular" pair of shorts to hide the wobbly bits. I think this is my 5th pair.

I walked on Tuesday, it was my long walk. Dr said it was okay, just not to walk too fast. My abdominal muscles are still healing, and don't want to risk pulling or tearing a muscle. I walked 9 miles in 2 1/2 hours. I think that's about 17 mins per mile. And I have 59 days to work on the pace. There's only another 4 miles more. That's good, I was concerned that after having 3 months of waiting for, having and recovering from surgery that 13.1 miles would be too far. But fingers crossed - it's looking good.

Yesterday and today are rest days - I am have to have two days between walking, and no running, weights or swimming yet.

Hello to m all my fellow WISHers!

I have been lurking a lot but obviously not posting much lately. I have enjoyed reading everyone's posts and it sounds like everyone is gearing up nicely for the official training that will start before we know it.

Helen - I am so sorry about your kitty. It is so hard to lose a furbaby but I am glad you were able to give her a peaceful passage to the Rainbow bridge.

Sunny - I too have been experiencing am/pm sciatica although not as badly as you. I have suffered with it in the past but had no episodes since last summer until recently. My pain is also very bad in the morning and bad again (although not as bad as the morning) at night. During the day as long as I stay moving I feel pretty well but any sitting and I am miserable. I strongly feel that for me yoga and pilates are the keys to keeping my pain at bay. I started taking yoga/pilates last summer and had no sciatica problems until I missed several weeks of classes early this summer due to a temporary schedule conflict. Now it has been more than 6 weeks of pain and I am only now starting to feel better now that I am back in my classes. I read a good article in Yoga Journal magazine that also recommended yoga practice specifically for sciatica issues. I just wanted to mention this in case it was something that you might consider.

I have had 2 sessions with a personal trainer (I paid for 10 about 2 months ago and just now have had time to start using them!). He is great and I have enjoyed the sessions very much. I was VERY SORE after both sessions but it felt good to know I was making progress and getting stronger. I have done some treadmill work as well and of course my aforementioned yoga and pilates classes.

Dave asked me to mention on this thread that I have a poll thread up for an Illuminations Dessert party during marathon weekend/week. If you are interested and have not yet posted/voted, please check out the thread and let me know when you can come and what you'd like to eat! I am really hoping we can get this together as I think it would be a great event and lots of fun for all involved!

I can hardly believe it has been a month today since my dad passed away. My mom is managing but she is lonely and sad and I am of course concerned for her. We're just taking it day-by-day and week-by-week and hoping that we are doing better along the way. Thank you again to all of you who prayed and sent pixie dust our way - it was truly appreciated!

Hi everybody!

Haven't checked in all week. Been busy at work and also feeling a bit :guilty: since I haven't gotten a lot of training in.

I've been pretty consistent with riding my spinner while watching the Tour de France. It makes the time go by quicker. But until yesterday, I hadn't been out to run/walk for awhile.

Yesterday I went to the track and ran/walked 5 miles in 1:04.56
That's just about a 13 mpm pace. For not having been out for awhile, I was thrilled! I felt good afterwards also. But this morning I was sore. It took almost all day until my body felt kinda normal. I skipped the ride tonight. I had errands to do and I figured I'd let the body rest and wait until tomorrow.

Sunny - Sending :grouphug: and :wizard: your way. Hope they figure out what the problem is. Great pics of you and DD. Love the walker slogan. My favorite shorts to run in are a pair of board shorts I bought in Hawaii about 8 years ago. They are so comfortable and no chafing!

Kristi - If you do the Moose Run, could you check if they sell T-shirts with the Moose pics on them? My brother-in-law's nickname is Moose and I always try to find different stuff with Moose on it for him. If you could get one (size XL), I'd gladly send you money for the shirt and postage.

Tiff - Hope the supplements work. At least now you know what the problem is.

Cecilia - :welcome: . Don't worry, rambling is a favorite pasttime for us! :teeth:

Helen - so sorry to hear about your kitty.

Rachael - Great job on the long walk.

Gotta go. Will try to check in again more frequently. Happy Training!

Terri

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

I had a rest day yesterday. Today I am supposed to do my walk/run plan on the track again. Keep your fingers crossed. So the princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:, are at an overnight camp yesterday and today as part of their summer day care program. That gave DW and I a needed date night. We had some gift certificates left over from Christmas for theater tickets and dinner. So we got to have an adult night, have a really nice dinner, and go to a show. It was a real treat.

Cecilia :welcome: Good for you for doing the Team in Training! I'm glad you found our group. They've been such a supportive team for me, and have kept me going since Janaury now. Longest I've exercises in years.

Sunny- more PD :wizard: :wizard: for your back. I'm sorry you are in so much pain, and I hope you get some relief soon. Take it easy on yourself. I agree with Cam, it sounds like you got a good Doctor this time. Let us know how the MRI results turn out.

today i tried 6 french braids and it gave me some airy spots on my scalp for air to flow. (that is just way to much about hair and sweat isn't it?) Anyway, that is what i did!
MelR- Awesome workout! I think we need some pictures of your new hairdo though (pre-sweat though please)! Different thought - are you planning on going up for the CRIM at all this year? I had been planning on doing it with my BIL, but this injured leg has really thrown a loop in my plans.

Monte- Good job on your walk. Don't worry about pace. It will come. At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

Mel/Chimera- Sounds like you and I are at the same point in our training too. My runs have been very slow, but I'm trying to get built back up for it. So when is your 20th high school reunion? My 20th is supposed to be this year too, but I haven't heard one peep about any plans at all. Not sure if I'd go anyway... By the way, belated Happy Birthday!!! :cake: :bday: :cake:

Cam- How'd the dorm decorating meeting go? Awesome job on your workout! :thumbsup2 Good luck on your 5K this weekend.

Bekah- Good to hear from you again. Wow, I'm impressed with your swim/run workouts. Good for you! Congratulations on registering for the TRI and Marathon!!! WTG!!!

Hi Jodi :wave2: - Glad you could get some training in. It sounds like you've been so busy at work. Is your 5K this Saturday the one with the ice cream at the end? You can suffer through any weather for ice cream. So Jodi, where are you and your husband staying for the Marathon weekend anyway? Are you staying at POFQ?

RachaelQ- Ooooh, fun, new shoes. Have fun breaking them in and getting them nice and dirty before the DL 1/2. Sounds like you are on the same schedule as I am - 48 hour recovery after any walking/running with impact.

Rhonda- I hope your sciatica and pain clear up soon too. :wizard: :wizard: You've been through so much lately, take it easy on yourself and use your training as a respite.

Terri- Good to hear from you too. Sounds like you've been spinning right along with your training. Good job getting outside and running. It must be hot over there in Philly.

OK, well I get up early so I can do my leg exercises. So I guess I better go do them. Have a great day everyone!

Hi Dave, good luck with the training today -- today is my rest day (although, I might do some crosstraining).

Glad you were able to work in a date last night! :thumbsup2

Nope, the Ice Cream Run isn't until August -- This weekend I am running the 5k near Bradley International Airport, here is a link to their website: Space Race .

My husband and I will be staying at POFQ, still waiting for that AAA rate (which they can apply afterwards). I kind of have a funny story about AAA travel while I'm at it --- ok, maybe not funny but a story none the less.

Earlier in the year I had booked with my AAA travel agent, now I decided to give her one last chance and booked with her. Everyone reminded me about how she messed up our travel in the past but did I listen.....well, no!

Before I set up all of my reservations for Dining I asked her for the confirmation number for the room (I hadn't seen one since booking), well she called me up with it -- and a few days later I received the confirmation sheet.....she messed up again. She booked me for the sister resort (Riverside), and did not have any of my requests on the reservation. Actually my only request was to get a non-smoking room (I have asthma and it would drive me crazy).

So I promptly, called Disney and reserved a room with them.

The next day I called up AAA and asked if there was a reason that my confirmation was at POR and not POFQ. She later in the day left a message saying that it wasn't her fault when she called it in the reservation person in Florida messed up -- but it kills me, doesn't she double check things when the confirmation are sent to her? Oh well, I'm in the process of cancelling her, she is giving me a little bit of attitude.

If she hadn't messed up in the past.....I don't think I would be upset at all but our last trip (honeymoon) - She told me when I booked that we would have a King bed (really hard to get -- limited number) and that it would be noted that we were on our honeymoon. Since things were a little different then you only received a statement from AAA and not Disney, so you couldn't really see what was requested.

We arrived to POFQ and no king bed :guilty: and they had no clue that we were on our honeymoon.

Let me finish by saying I know not all AAA offices are like this and I know there was little Disney could do once we were already there! We had a great time anyway.

OMG - I didn't realize how much I just wrote.....hehe blame it on the coffee!

Hey, Dave on my other thread I posted my DH's basket finished! :goodvibes

8 weeks from today I will be waking up on the other side of the country & going to the park where it all started! :cool1: :cheer2: I am so excited I cant stand it! I am hoping the heat/humidity in CA is not as bad as it is here.

Dave-that's great you got a "date night" good luck on your run.

Cecilia-Welcome! This is a great, chatty group that's sure to keep you motivated. (if they can get me off the couch then it can work for anyone :lmao: )

Terri-WTG on the pace!

Rachael-glad your training is progressing. But like the doc said, dont do anything that might hurt you worse & put you out of the game. See you in 8 weeks!

Bekah-Congrats on signing up for the tri & the full. I am way impressed. Is this your first tri? An excuse to do multiple trips to WDW is how I got started in all this :rolleyes1 Oh and by the way "yes you can, yes you can....."

Mel-great job on the running! I've heard that when you first start increasing your running intervals, your overall pace slows a little, but it will be back up there in no time so no worries :thumbsup2

Cam-great job on the run! Cant wait to see you in 8 weeks either (can you tell I'm a smidge excited :yay: )

I tried the 100 calorie Balance bars yesterday. YUM!!! The only problem is you can't carry them in the summer on LR because they have choc. coating & it will melt. But very good for before & after :thumbsup2

Good Friday all, just a drive by posting from me today. Seems like I am only capable of drive bys during the week anymore. Hope things slow down a bit soon. Anyway, PS and :grouphug: to all those in need and :thumbsup2 to all with triaining efforts.

I am off today so I plan on enjoying myself. I may get in a short 4 miler later but, then again, I may not. I have had an off week this week due to the storm that went though and left us without power for 2 days and left debris everywhere. Got in a 5.5 miler on Tuesday before the storm and 5.4 miles last night. Maybe I will rest up today for the 15 miler I am doing tomorrow. Good Friday everyone.

Hey Lynne! I just read in the Rochester paper this morning that the Lake Placid Ironman Tri is this weekend. Are you in that one? Is that your next chance at Kona? If so, good luck!!! Here's hopin' you have a great race and qualify!

Hey all. I had my running group last night. We did 4 miles in the heat. I nearly died. The running leader was watching me and noticed my breathing is horrible. Well it's not horrible because I know HOW to breathe, I just can't catch a breathe. It progressively has gotten worse as I am doing longer runs. And I have lost 20 pounds, so I would think my breathing would be better. She thinks I may have exercise induced asthma and thinks I need to see my doctor. My chest still aches this morning. If I can't make it through 4 miles, 13.1 will kill me!!!!

So now I have to beg and plead to get into my doctor who I love, but is impossible to get an appointment with. 6 months ago they switched computer systems to make everything electronic and now it takes twice as long to get a patient through the system. Some technology eh!

Thank you for all the welcomes everyone!

I am trying to build up my base mileage right now to get ready for my 18 week Marathon training program. So right now I run 3 or 5 miles every other day. Yesterday I ran with my husband who just finished a triathlon. We ran 3 miles in 31 minutes.
We ran the Peachtree (10k) in 64 minutes but that includes a stop at the portapotties, dancing to the ketchup song, and stopping to get free t-shirts from the restaurants on the route. We declined the free beers since it was barely 8am but we won't next time.

By the way, I have never run more than 6.2 miles in my life.

Wow, I am so excited to be here! So many of you sound just like me!

I am looking for a t-shirt or the graphics so I can make a t-shirt of a penguin wearing Mickey Mouse ears or perhaps a Minnie Mouse Bow. For some strange reason, I am picturing the penguin from the back and on the back of a singlet. Maybe I saw this somewhere?

Cecilia

Dave - I don't think we are going to get to do the CRIM this year. I'm a little dissappointed about it as I wanted to make it a yearly tradition. Phil is doing a long course (100 miles or 30 hours) adventure race that weekend in August, so we won't be able to come. Bummer. Sorry you might not be able to go either.

Good Friday morning, all! I am so psyched that I will be seeing Tiff and all our DL WISHers 8 weeks from tomorrow. 8 weeks from this moment I will be on a west-bound plane for the first time! Howard got back from his Vegas trip at 5:30 am today and during the week he told me he knows I will HATE the flight (I am a bit claustrophobic, so I try to sleep on planes and sit on an aisle. I also have an odd blood condition related to clotting so my hematologist is very concerned about a long flight. I am not going to worry about any of that, though!

The dorm room planning meeting went great and Jenn's roommate's parents are both UD alums and her mom had all sorts of great advice/insight. The girls are a bit limited in what they can do until they find out their dorm assignment in August, but they did split up the huge list of must-haves last night so that they can go shopping. They are shopping for matching comforters today, so that should be fun. Wow! It really takes me back. Hard to believe it has been 25 years! NOW I feel old!

Jodi -- good luck on your 5K! We are doing one tomorrow a.m., too, for the Blood Bank. We can commiserate about heat and humidity together!

Jen -- Good luck getting a dr. appt quickly. I'd hate for you to be taking unnecessary chances with your health.

MelR -- I was very interested in your post. I know this is TMI, but I am having such a hard (read: disgusting) time when I run. The sweat just pours off my scalp and soaks my hair. Geez, it's not like I am running any distance and a lot of it is on the TM. I just got it cut, hoping that would help, but it hasn't, and it is too short for french braids. YUCK!!

Off to update a couple threads and journal and then to focus on work. I am so glad it is Friday though I am working all day Sunday.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

OK, as is typical, the earliest I can be "squeezed" into my doctor is August 2. So I will keep trudging along with my breathing that hurts until then. I am so frustrated that I just want to take a break. I wanted to run a 10K on Sept. 9, but now I am not sure I can handle it. Of course, when I looked online for info, it said that if left untreated, the asthma can cause serious damage. So I freaked!!!! I wanted to do a 4 mile wog tomorrow morning, but my chest still aches from last night, which was a faster pace than I am used to.

This whole thing makes me crabby!
