Wk of Jan 28--WISH Walking/Running Club

:welcome: Jen - and any others I've missed! I started with the Minnie last year and am aiming for the half next year.

Terri - Hope you hear something soon.

Did 40 minutes on the TM this morning and felt really good - almost think I could have run the entire 40 but didn't want to push it too much! Gotta hit the shower now and get ready for work, but had to post since I rolled out of bed at 5:00 to make this happen!

Jackie

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Yesterday I did 4.0 miles on the TM. I was feeling really good during my run, and it was a nice easy run. My first 2 miles I did at 10 mpm (6.0), and it didn't feel like my heart rate was even up that high. For the next mile I increased the speed to 9:40 mpm (6.2) and still felt good. For the final mile I upped it to 9:30 mpm (6.3). I was feeling really good about my run until someone hopped on the treadmill next to me and was running 6 mpm (10.0 mph). Whoa, he was moving. I know, I know, I'm only competing with myself.

Sunny- Aaaah, too bad you won't be running the Flying Pig. I've heard great things about the VermontCity Marathon in Burlington. When I lived in Middlebury, VT, I had a couple of friends run that marathon. I've heard there's really good crowd support for it. It's definitely on my list of marathons to run. Good luck with your training, and I'm glad you're feeling better. I remember before Disney you said your career as a distance runner was over. Glad to see that isn't true. I look forward to running another race with you.

Mike- Your post cracked me up. About 10 years ago after running the CRIM 10 miler in Michigan, and seeing the Kenyans burn up the course at 5 min miles, I decided I wanted to go to the track and run one lap at the pace the Kenyans ran. So I did my 1/4 mile in about one minute, and promptly hurt myself in the process and couldn't run the rest of the summer.

Hello Melissa :wave2: - Great job on the trainer. What's your next event? The 50K?

:welcome: Chernabog#1Fan :welcome: Congratulations on committing to the 5K, and for your committment to fitness. Congratulations on the weight loss you've already had. That's amazing, and I'm also impressed with your running 20-25 miles/week. You're doing fantastic.

Kim - Great job with your 2 miler and getting your steps in.

Krista - YAHOOOOOO!!!! Congratulations to you, and I'm so glad you didn't have any IT pain! Good job recovering from the marathon, and take it nice and slow and easy and you'll be in good shape.

Kristi- Hope you are feeling better soon! Wha??? Half a uterus? That's a new one to me.

:welcome: Jen- You won't get any stares from this group. Congratulations on signing up for Minnie and Goofy. We look forward to hearing more about how your training is going. Many of us are using Bingham and Galloway training plans. Good luck with your 5K bridge run!

Mel- Awesome TM run! Good for you. That sounds like a great way to increase your speed on the TM. WTG with the 60 minutes! :thumbsup2

Terri- I'm really curious to hear the results of your MRI. I'm WISHing you all the best.

Maggie- Good job on your 2 miles. I've often had to cut runs short so I had time to stretch. I decided the stretching is as (or more) important than running another 5-10 minutes and not doing any stretching after. I finally understand why my old high school coaches made us stretch. I never needed to then, but now, 20 years later, my older body needs it.

Jackie- Good for you for getting out of bed at 5:00am and getting your steps in on the TM. WTG!!!

Have a great day everyone, and good luck with all your training.

Good Morning all! Today is going to be a self-imposed rest day. I've been having twinges of pain in my ankle, so going to rest it today and see how it feels tomorrow. That, and both kids were up in the middle of the night--ended up with DS in the middle of our bed until 2am. REALLY dragging this am!

Kevin--So sorry to hear about your friend. Sending lots of hugs your way:hug:

:welcome: To all our new members! We're gonna be taking over WDW in January '08! Watch out for the pack of safety lime green!!!!::yes:: ::yes::

Sorry I'm not responding to all! Need to get ready for the day--Have a great day and good/safe training to all!:wave2:

Jim,You are hard core to actually read a book!
I agree, I sit and whimper the entire time. Of course there are two huge bags of ice taking up much needed room in our freezer because I completely wimped out on my last ice bath.
I have already lost the second toenail on my right foot and now the big toe is about to lose the nail, too. The soles of my feet are a mess. I had no idea we could lose that many layers of skin and still walk on our feet.
Toe nails are for wimps. I lost 2 before the marathon and 2 more in the week after. My shoes fit fine, some people just lose toenails during intense training. Usually it only happens the first time you train intensely.
I burned the soles of my feet once and I know what misery you must be feeling. Ouch ouch ouch. I hope they heal quickly.
I got kicked :cool1: by my little fetus for the first time yesterday!!!! :cloud9: I guess I had to report his/her exercise since I have done much of my own lately.
Oh that is such an awesome feeling. Congratulations!
Cam By 0.3 I realized that MY inner Kenyan must be the old villager with no teeth.
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: That should be on a tshirt!
I signed up for Minnie, and then freaked out and signed up for Goofy. Why is it that everyone I tell my plans to either stares at me or laughs?
You will have the entire set! Awesome! I know I would love to have the Minnie to match my Mickey but DH said not this year. I entered a contest so maybe I will win the trip.
Telling someone you signed up for Goofy a test of how intense a runner the person is: Non runners don't get it at all, casual runners think you are crazy, and serious runners look at you and say "When is it?"

Have a great day everyone!
Cecilia

So... I did some research and signed up for a Burlington, VT marathon May 27th. Perfect since we get May 28th off for Memorial day.
http://www.runvermont.org/marathon/
Sunny-Since I'm committed to Grandma's Marathon on 6/16 I can't run Burlington, but I PROMISE to have my scream team out there for you on the course if you do come:cool1: . It is about 2 hours from me and a bunch of women from my running club are trying to qualify for Boston with that marathon.

Kevin - Deeply sorry for your loss. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

As for the ice bath topic, my girls always ask DH if I am waxing when they hear me screaming in pain while submerging into the ice baths.:rotfl2: :rotfl2: Sorry if that's a little TMI but the good laugh helps alleviate the initial agony of it all.

5 miles for me on the TM followed by a Pilates class this morning. I continue to be in lurker mode while my life is crazy, but I am trying to keep up here and I hope you guys are all doing great with goals and training.

hoosmi & Chernabog - Welcome!!!!!!

Mike - :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: That's my inner Kenyan too!!!!

Dave - WTG! Great run!!

Stephanie - Way to go on listening to your body! It's wayyyy too early to be hurt.

Jackie - You must be feeling much vbetter! :cool1:

Terri - Good choice on taking it easy! pixiedust:

I did 30 to 40 min of XT with the snow blower last night. Heck, just walking to the barn in 8" of snow with my winter gear on was a good work out. The snow was beautiful, though.

BTW, during my Saturday run, I remebered why I don't live in a warm climate. Watching 2 kids (~3 and 5) play with their snow man was priceless!

Kevin - I'm so sorry to here all that you've been through lately

Cam - Hope your feet are doing better!

Okay has Judy gone missing or what :confused3

No training whatsoever. Now my neck matches my lower back. It's end of the year so no chiro for me until next week

WISHing everyone happy training pixiedust:

Good morning, all!

I am posting from school today. It's "Ugly Day," aka Mismatch clothes and funky hair day. Ick. Catholic Schools Week is so wild and fun! We're heading to the bowling alley in about 15 minutes -- is that cross training?

I got in my time on the TM -- 4.08 in 48:00. No spin class. Our volleyball actually did pretty well, but I'm not going to lie -- I'm starting to feel like I am hauling bricks behind my butt when I run! I think I need a rest day today.

Christa -- Julie's feet have been going pins-and-needles and numb right on the ball of her foot. One question was whether or not she was running on her toes.

Mike (Optimator) -- I fit in my training along with everything else because I don't have family to take care of! It's just me, so that makes it a lot easier. Although, I do spend a considerable time on work outside of work and coach and whatnot, I guess I just require less sleep! I'm sure I don't do any more than anybody else here, though. I am curious why your time was deceiving, though, because I always look at my times for what they are!

I didn't have a lot of time to cruise through the thread today, so I can't respond to everyone.

I do agree with whoever commented about kids making snowmen making the cold weather more bearable!

Talk to you all soon! Keep it up!

Ashley

Sunny – Congrats on signing up for a race closer to home! I hope your family will be your Scream Team! Remember your WISH team will be cheering for you whereever we are!

Mike – you had me totally :rotfl: with your comment on your inner Kenyan! What a riot! I wish I could find mine! Mine is the only short, fat lady in the village, the one who is usually home cooking for all the other real “kenyans” who are out doing great things. Anyway, your pace was still totally great! How in the world could you NOT be so incredibly proud of a sub-8:00 pace? Give yourself a pat on the back, buddy!

Chernabog#1fan – WOW! I am so impressed by all you have accomplished. Congratulations for setting the goal for the Minnie 5K! And :welcome: It is going to be so exciting to see you here and share your progress. Please be sure to check in on the WISH Minnie Roster thread and introduce yourself. There is a WISH meet scheduled for that weekend and lots of WISHers doing the 5k. Come join us! :goodvibes:

Kim – 2.11 in 30 minutes is a 14:13 pace. That is great! :woohoo: You are already WAYYYY ahead of the sweepers and you have lots and lots of time to work on endurance and pace. :thumbsup2

Krista – I am so glad your first run was pain-free! YAY!!! I hope you are still feeling great today! :goodvibes:

Kristi – I hope you are feeling better, sweetie! pixiedust:

hoosmi – :welcome: Jen!!! No one here will be incredulous! We truly believe that if you put in the steps you can accomplish your goals. Good luck on training for Minnie! As I said above, be sure to check in on the WISH Minnie Roster thread and introduce yourself. There is a WISH meet scheduled for that weekend and lots of WISHers doing the 5k. Come join us! :goodvibes:

Mel – awesome workout! :woohoo: It is amazing to me that our very accomplished WISHers (like you) are improving their time/pace/distance based on new approaches. It gives me hope that I might stumble upon some miracle method that helps me improve significantly.

Hi, Terri! So nice to see you here. Please do not push yourself. And be sure to tell us as soon as you hear MRI results. You are in my prayers.

Maggie – good approach not sacrificing the stretching. I have learned the hard way in the past that that investment of time can keep your training efforts on track rather than suffering an injury that derails you. :thumbsup2

Jackie, Dave, Ashley – :woohoo:

Cecilia – “Toenails are for wimps!” – Maybe THAT needs to be on a shirt! How funny!

Sara – :lmao: on the waxing comment!

Carrie – yeah, snowmen are great! I LOVE looking at them out the window with a hot beverage in hand. Our backyard is gorgeous with snow and I’ve actually seen deer and fox in the woods beyond our yard – they are much more visible against the white of the snow. Absolutely gorgeous!

Hey, Judy, where are you? :sad1:

Okay, I HAVE to post this before anyone else posts and I get further and furhter behind! I can barely keep up with you guys.

Oh, one last thing. Howard's back is NOT getting better. I am going to remind him to try to get in to see the doctor tonight. Hopefully, a chiropractic adjustment will alleviate the pain. Poor guy! Thanks for your good thoughts for him. :grouphug:

Mike – you had me totally :rotfl: with your comment on your inner Kenyan! What a riot! I wish I could find mine! Mine is the only short, fat lady in the village, the one who is usually home cooking for all the other real “kenyans” who are out doing great things.
No, no, no Cam! You are DOING great things too! Your family life is so busy, you support the community, you are working a strenous job full time, AND you are a marathoner! Do not belittle your accomplishments. You are GREAT! Any Kenyan would be proud!

Good morning WISHers!

Just a quick pass through. We're right in the middle of our renovation and we have a carpet crisis. OH NO!!! :headache:

Kevin - Sorry to hear of your loss. Good thoughts enroute.

Krista - Give Hines a hug for us. :)

Helen - Do you mean to tell me, you were in NW Florida and didn't call? I'm Hurt.

hoosmi and Chernabog - :welcome:

To the injured - Get well!

To the sick - Get well!

To all - Get your training walks/runs in. Don't make me get this guy after you.

Take care.

No, no, no Cam! You are DOING great things too! Your family life is so busy, you support the community, you are working a strenous job full time, AND you are a marathoner! Do not belittle your accomplishments. You are GREAT! Any Kenyan would be proud!
Thanks, Dave -- actually, I should have said I USED to be. Now I'm still the short, fat lady who's out trying to keep up with the villagers who inspire me to do great things!

Hey, guys, speaking of awesome, inspiring people, I think most of you remember how Special Olympians inspire me and Howard everyday with their spirit and determination and passion, right? Well, this weekend, Howard and Andy and I will be able to assist the efforts of Special Olympics Delaware by raising funds through the Annual Polar Bear Plunge. I think this is Howard's 9th year doing it and Andrew's third. I think it is the 5th year I've done it, since I'd missed a bunch of years in between on cardiologists' orders. Just wanted to ask you all to send warm thoughts, that is prayers for not-too-severe weather conditions this Sunday in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware when we plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. :scared1: <----yes, we will be this blue but this happy :yay: !

Just a quick drive-by before I really have to dive into work.

Kevin - I'm so sorry for your loss.:grouphug:

:welcome: to all the new folks!

DH and I blew off our scheduled gym visit last night. His back was bothering him (we're not sure what he did), so we were total bums. Planning to get in and do a 2 mile tonight.

Sara-- I'll wear my WISH shirt so they'll be sure to see me!

I'm on my way to the gym for a 5 miler. I printed out Hal Higdon's Inter. I last night. Last week was week 1 of the 18 week plan and I only fell a little short. Turns out the VT date works perfectly to start training now. I'll definitely trade one of the FIVE running days for xt, but try to stick to it. I really need to improve my current pace for VT.

OK, ice baths. At the time of the experience I thought about sharing and then thought there was no way to do it in a "moderator approved" way, but I'll give it a shot. Disney half I was in great shape, stretched, got my own ice and did my normal routine: tub few inches full, then pour in the ice. Disney full I was in terrible shape and asked Paul to fill as many ice bags as he could (we had about a dozen gallon sized zip locks plus the ice bucket). I started stretching and he promptly started loading the tub up with ice. He could see I was in dire condition so he was quite zealouse and probably dumped a good 16 gallons of ice in the tub. So I get there and have to "sit down". Well, there's a problem with the naked bum sitting on a large pile of small ice cubes. Ice tried to go places it did not belong!:lmao:   I immediatley jumped back up and tried to rearranged the ice to make a bare spot but there was too much. I finally managed to get my soak. So runner tip #1023: do not sit bare butt on a large pile of small ice cubes:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I think we've been pushing the moderators to the limits for a while now:rotfl2:

My Garmin has been MIA for months now. So I did the only right thing: I ordered a 205 last night:woohoo:

Hi,
Well it is the year of a million dreams after all. I turned 51 last Sunday. And since then have been secretly thinking about walking a marathon. Secretely because my DH would say it was too much. I had an ankle fusion last March. Could not walk more than a block before surgery...pain. Now, no pain and I'm up to 40 minutes on the treadmill at 3.9 speed. So my dream seems feasible.
See if this beginners plan sounds allright. BTW I'll never run. Didn't before surgery and couldn't now. And I have my surgeons blessing to do anything but jump or run. Too much impact. Anyway today and three times a week I will walk at 3.9 speed for three miles. And one day a week at 6 miles. Well at least I will attempt 6 miles this week. Not having done it I'm not sure yet how it will go.
My goal is to walk a marathon next year. So training can be slow.
BTW. Does anyone just walk a marthon at Disney? Will I be lonely walking in 4 or 5 hours later than everyone else? Not that it will stop me. Just curious?
BTW thanks to Carrie for pointing me in the right thread. I told my story on last weeks thread last night.

Hey guys! Just finished catching up with all the posts. This thread is moving fast again this week!

Kevin—I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your co-worker. Our thoughts and prayers are definitely with you. Glad to have you back here. We all missed you!

Christa—awesome pics of the shirt run! That looks like so much fun, and I especially like the dog in the last pic with the shirt!. :)

Maria—WTG on the morning run! That’s dedication, especially if you’re not a morning person.

Cam—glad the hands and feet are healing (at least somewhat). You’re right, wear those badges of honor proudly. Next time anyone says, “Yeah, I could probably do a half marathon/marathon,” just show them the feet and ask them if they could deal with that! :)

Helen—good job on the biking. Hope everything continues to go well with your feet. Keep us posted.

Mike—you had me rolling with the Inner Kenyan stuff. That’s great!

Chernabog—WELCOME and congrats on the weight loss and fitness! WTG on registering for the 5K. You should probably be warned that after you register for that first race, you’ll be addicted. Next thing you know, you’re surfing the web looking for any race within 500 miles that you can sign up for. Not that that’s happened to any of us before!

Mel—I know what you mean, there is so much to do in the first 30 minutes after a LR. Between eating, stretching, ice bath, changing clothes, shower….. And we wonder why the non-runners/walkers in our lives don’t understand how a LR can take us the better part of an entire morning.  WTG on the good treadmill run.

Jen—WELCOME!! Nice job on the 5 miler! Don’t worry about the looks you get from others when you tell them what you’ve signed up for—we’ve all been there. Just put the steps in and you’ll be fine.

Dave—WTG on the pace! Don’t you just hate it when those 10.0 mph people jump on a treadmill next to you? And it always happens when you’re finishing a really good run, and then they get up there and make you feel about 2 inches tall. Next time, just lean over and tell them, "Hey, I'm in touch with my inner Kenyan. Are you?" :)

Ashley, Jackie, Sara—good for you for getting the miles in!

Cam—I just read your last post about the Polar Bear Plunge. You guys are crazy! Ice baths are one thing, the Polar Bear thing is another! We’ll be sending pixiedust: for good weather conditions for you. I’m not going to lie—I don’t envy you guys this weekend!

Sunny- :rotfl2: about the ice bath. You’re going to scare all the ice bath newbies away!

Not a whole lot of crazy training to report. I lifted and did 45 minutes on the stationary bike last night (I REALLY can’t wait for it to warm up so I can get my real bike out on the road). I’m thinking about trying out a spinning class this weekend. Never done that before, but I know it would get me back into biking shape so that when it does warm up, I’m ready to go again. What do you guys think of those classes? Are they really worthwhile, especially for keeping in “biking shape?”
I’ve got a 5 mile run to do tonight, and I might actually cave in and do it on the treadmill. I know, I know, I raved about all this cold weather and how great it was, but it really is starting to wear on me. :sad2:
Have a great Tuesday, everyone!

Steve

Congratulations, Carole, on what you've done far. That's amazing. Next time I want to blow off my workout, I'm going to think of you and what you've accomplished.

:welcome:

I believe a lot of people still walk the whole marathon. It's an impressive feat. Many people out there don't walk 26.2 miles in 2 weeks, let alone 7-8 hours.

Hey y'all-- I've been hanging out on the unofficial marathon thread, and it took me this long to figure out this is where the action's at! I'm a newbie to running, although I've been walking a lot over the last 3+ years, and have lost 60 pounds with about 20 to go. In a break with sanity, I signed up for the full marathon, and I'm totally excited about it! Currently I'm following my local track club's 5k in 12 weeks schedule (I'm on week 5), and from there I'm going to pick up with Jeff Galloway's marathon plan (and possibly complete my town's half-marathon in September on the weekend of my 35th birthday!). Right now I'm running 3 times a week for 30 minutes on the treadmill at the Y, doing 4 minutes/1 minute running/walking intervals, and I feel pretty good. I miss running on my days off, and when I think about it, I get that butterflies-in-my-stomach feeling I used to get in high school when I thought about the boy I liked. But maybe that's too much information... Anyway, I'm looking forward to chatting with y'all, and hopefully get some good advice.

again this week!
What do you guys think of those classes? Are they really worthwhile, especially for keeping in “biking shape?”

Steve
OMG--Steve I just read this as "keeping in bikini shape":lmao: I was sure wondering what sort of beach attire you wear!!!:rotfl2:

Sunny--WTG on ordering the 205--I can't stop ordering more stuff for this free sport--today I ordered Crocs for me for after LRs and WDW--now I'm in dire need of new tights, socks, etc......

Well, lunch time is over and the kiddos are needing some mommy time!
