Wk of Jan 28--WISH Walking/Running Club

I've decided not to do the pig. It looks like it would cost me at least $500 and I just can't justify that.

So... I did some research and signed up for a Burlington, VT marathon May 27th. Perfect since we get May 28th off for Memorial day.

http://www.runvermont.org/marathon/

There's a little catch... The pace requirement is 13:44 (6HR) finish. I better get my butt in gear. I mailed my reg. today:cool1:

Any other Northerner's interested?

I just want to say "Thanks!" for all the replies. I am going to check with Julie about running on her toes. That might be it! It could also be the laces, but she insists that it's not.
Ashley

Ashley....I missed this somewho. Running on toes? I ask b/c I run on my toes...mainly when I am going fast. My DD8 also runs and walks on her toes...I sometimes walk on my toes too.:confused3

Cam - Trying to accomplish a 5k PR with all you ongoing issues is impressive. Be sure to be prudent.

Ashley - It's great that you manage to get your training in with all your other activities.

I guess hearing about Cam working on her 5K time got me thinking. I had a 3 miler scheduled for today. Why not go out hard and see what I could do? I took off with delusions of grandeur. By 0.3 I realized that MY inner Kenyan must be the old villager with no teeth. I had to work real hard to keep going the rest of the way. Lesson learned! Finished off 3.2 mi at 7.53 mpm but that is sort of deceiving.

Best of luck to everyone keeping at it this week.

Too cold here for me to get out and ride, so i rode the trainer for 1 hr. today.

Sunny - cool! I'm glad you registered.

Kevin - I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. You have had a pretty overwhelming year! You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Christa - I have tried to run on my toes. I though it might make me faster, but it didn't work:confused3

Icebathers: You are all more brave than I am. I just run cold water and I say that counts. If it is cold enough to make my chest constrict when i sit in it, i think that is cold enough!!! I do think it helps, but I have to be pretty serious about it to actually do it. I probably will do it after the 50k, b/c i don't want to be incredibly sore. It should be pretty cold on that date anyway, so maybe that will help.

Hello Everyone,

I am going to be registering for the 5k during the Minnie Marathon. It will be my first run. I have been obese my entire life and never been an athlete of any type. Even in grade school when they had the Presidential Fitness Tests and Awards, I would always finish dead last. The 600 meter dash was more of a 600 meter stroll around the school grounds. Over the past year and a half I have started working out and using my treadmill for its intended purpose. I first started out walking a 20 minute mile and I have worked my way up to running 20 - 25 miles a week and lost 110lbs. I'm hoping to be able to complete the 5k run in about 25 the 30 minutes.
I don't have a running buddy or a workout partner, so this board and your postings are inspirational and very informative.

Hope to see some of you at the 5k in May

Kim -- I fell during the marathon before mile 7 and cut my left knee and both palms, wrenched my right knee and wrist and did something to my left shoulder. That is all healed now, but I also banged my toes up somehow during the marathon and four of them remain a total mess! I know -- it sounds gruesome and gross, doesn't it?

OMG Cam, that is terrible but wow amazing that you were able to continue with the marathon and that you have continued with your training. What a impiration you are:hug: I hope all your injuries heal up real soonpixiedust:

Just stopping by quickly, just came back from the gym, didn't go this morning, I slept terribly last night so was not going to get up at 5:15 AM. Did my 30 min, 2.11 miles. Not fast but OK, I tried a different machine and I believe the first one I was using was way out of wack. I am OK with it though, we move on.

I hope to check back later, I am starving and dinner is ready.

have a great night all.

Kim

:rotfl: :rotfl: :lmao:
I think my inner Kenyan must be from the same village as yours ;)

:welcome: to Chernabog#1Fan! Congrats on your weight loss and fitness!

Kevin...so sorry for your loss :grouphug:

Sunny...sorry...I have a weird sense of humor :joker:

Well, I'm not a fan of cold weather or cold water so have not attempted the ice bath yet. I'm thinking I may need to while training for the full. My question to you pros...how do you coordinate all the things we have to do after a run? In the first 30 min, we're supposed to eat, I need to ice my foot, and now the water bath??? Do you just eat your post-race recovery meal in the tub with your hot tea/cocoa and a good book?

Kevin - Sorry to hear about your loss. I hope the time you took to reevaluate things was worthwhile.

Kind of a drive-by as I'm working on the laundry I ignored this weekend, but I just had to post my good news: I ran for the 1st time since the marathon and I didn't have any IT band pain!!!!!   I did w4/r2 and I was running at 10:54 (kind of slow for me) but I RAN!!!!! So happy!! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: I still have a long way to go before my IT band is completely healed, but I'm feeling good about it so far.

Chernabog--Welcome and CONGRATULATIONS on your weight loss!! That is wonderful!!

Mel--As far as the timing post lr, I usually drink a Slim Fast on the drive home from running (Stephen does this too) and then take an ice bath once I get home. I usually count the ice bath as icing, but if I need additional icing, I ice after I take the ice bath and then the hot shower, after all that, I eat for real, usually a scrambled egg and my best friend, Diet Coke. That was an incredibly long sentence! My English teach would have given me a dentention for that!

Sunny--Sorry you can't do the Pig, you will be missed! I understand about the expense of this "free" sport. Stephen was thinking about doing the Chicago marathon, until he figured out it would be a $1300 weekend! :faint:

:worship: The one and only time I tried to fill the tub with cold water (no ice) and just get in, I jumped right out as soon as my cheecks hit the water. :scared1:

Howard - :grouphug: :wizard:

The checks really are not the issue! :scratchin :lmao:

Chernabog#1fan - :welcome:

Kevin - I am so sorry to hear about your co-worker. I am glad to hear you stuck with your workouts though - I bet that helped with all the stress you have been under.

Cam - you make me feel better about my 3 perpetually purple toes! :rotfl: Seriously though, I hope they are healing ok and soon! I think I am due for another trip to the pod. myself. My one toenail is so "thick." I don't know how to describe it except thick - it sticks way up now. Looks kinda funny when I have just socks on!

Dena - love your version of 'exercise!' ;) Very cool! I hardly ever got kicked by Zack, so I love hearing this stuff. Turned out I only had half a uterus, so he couldn't really move in there! (TMI, I know!)

I have nothing to report, except another sick day from work. I am however much better today, though not 100%. I am hoping to get to the Y tomorrow afternoon and get back at it.

Congratulations on getting started. I could not run a mile with my son 18 months ago. Now I'm running marathons. If I can do it.....anyone can do it.

Hang in there and enjoy the journey! ::yes::

You don't have to do the ice bath right away....just within a few hours. If you do that you won't need to ice your foot. You'll be icying your lower half.

I did get pizza served to me Sunday during my bath. That was a special treat! :cool1:

Hey all--

Newbie here. I started running three years ago, ended up with PF (classic too much, too fast, and oh yeah, too fat!), stopped for awhile, had a baby... anyway, now I am back trying to run sensibly. I've been working on my base, and just did a slow 5 mile run on Saturday. I was rather pleased with myself. :cool1:

I signed up for Minnie, and then freaked out and signed up for Goofy. Why is it that everyone I tell my plans to either stares at me or laughs? Everyone around me is incredulous that I voluntarily signed up for these races-- I'm trying to convince myself it is because they can't imagine running that far and not that they can't imagine ME running that far! I just had a conversation with my mother that basically ended with me saying "Hello- I'm not trying to win the race!"

It's been so helpful to read all of your posts-

Thanks

Jen

:welcome: Jen! What are type of training plan do you use? Don't worry...my family doesn't quite get it either. :confused3

Jim...kinda reminds me of an old Seinfeld episode :cold:

Dena...congrats on the first kick!

I did 60 min on the TM tonight at a 13:13 pace. Best TM run I've ever had. I got the Maffetone book that Mike recommended for Xmas and realized I've been training all wrong. I used to do a 5 min warmup, then start at my target pace and see how long I could sustain it. Now I work my way up to the target by increasing my interval speed slowly, sustain it for the middle of the run, then bring it down in the same manner. Seems to be working really well, much better than when I trained for WDW!

Just checking in. I've been keeping up with the posts, but don't have anything to report myself.

I am kinda jealous of you folks who are training. I tried riding the bike for awhile, but foot has been kind of sore. I'm afraid to try to much until I get the results of the MRI. Don't want to make the foot worse.

Jen - my friends all think (thought) I was crazy, too. A bunch came down as my scream team this year. Now 3 are talking about doing the 5K and 2 want to try the 1/2. They say I'm a bad influence on them;)

Cam - sorry the toes are still messed up. Believe me, I feel your pain.::yes::

Kevin - sorry for the loss of your friend. :grouphug:

Terri

Thanks Mel!

I've been trying 4 minutes running/1 minute walking (it usually fades into more of a 3/2 pattern). The gym nursery hours don't really work for me, so I pretty much have resigned myself to running outside with my stroller. I may have to recruit DH to watch the baby tomorrow- may be a bit too cold for him. I have an irrational hope that I'll suddenly be super speedy without the stroller!

I'm sort of combining Bingham/Galloway best I can. I'm signed up for a 5k in February- it's basically a really BIG bridge- over and back. I'm walking that one! My seven year old daughter wants to do it with me. I guess I will let her, but I really hope I don't have to drag her up the bridge! I hope it ends up being a good experience for her. We've been walking together, but I don't think the hills I have found around home come close. (She's all about seeing if she can get a medal-- this makes her the most supportive in my family of my Minnie/Goofy plans!)

Jen

Good evening,

Kevin, may your friends' memory always be a blessing.

I did make it to the gym this afternoon and walked 2 miles on the treadmill before work. I planned on doing 3, but had to cut short to get to work on time. I gave up the mile so that I wouldn't skip stretching.

Good night,
Maggie
