:rotfl: I love newbie questions like that!

Yes, actually put ice in! :scared1:

My Method:

Get in tub with no water. I wear a sweatshirt to keep my top half warm.

Start filling tub with cold water.

Once you are used to that temp and tub is full...

Add a couple bags of ice.

It actually starts feeling really good!:yay:

I usually stay in for 15-20 minutes.

Also:

We have a separated tub and shower, so I get out of the tub and have my warm shower. On especially long or tough runs (16+ miles) I GET BACK IN THE ICE TUB for another 10-15 minutes!:scared:

I feel great the next day!

Colleen

Interesting way of doing it. I do mine a little different.

I take my shower first that way I don't re-heat what I'm trying to get the heat out of....my muscles.

I dump three bags of ice in the tub and fill it with cold water, just enough to cover my legs. It's usually 52-58 degrees.

And then enjoy for 20-40 minutes, depending on how good the book is.

Well, as I mentioned, I braved the cold this morning to get my LR in. Did 10 miles in 1:36. Felt pretty good with that. I think I may not increase my LR distance too much more for the next two months or so, so that I can work on some speed. I don't want to break the cardinal rule and increase speed and distance at the same time. We'll see how that goes. I'm still not completely used to this "reverse-taper" after a marathon. Last year I completely screwed this whole process up, started back too soon, and ended up injured for a month. This year, I'm probably starting back too slow. I know you need to start back gradually, and rebuild your miles slowly over a few weeks, but I'm wondering if it's too early to add in some speed sessions/hill work, etc. Any thoughts?

Well, hope everyone has a good rest of the weekend. Talk to you all later!

Steve

My answer would be to judge it based on how you feel. Did you really push yourself during the last race? Have you felt good during the recovery period? If so, I would start adding some speed work a little at a time. You can also knock it back if you start getting sore.

How long after a marathon do you have to wait before doing another? I want to do one on May 27th and one on July 15th. I know it's a short amount of time (month and a half), but I figure my mileage will already be up, and I can reverse taper, do a couple LRs, and then taper down again within those weeks (allow 2 to reverse, 2 for training, 2 for taper). I hope that's okay, but please tell me if I am actually INSANE! (But I might not listen, I really want the t-shirts...)

Ashley

So experts like Galloway say one a month is okay if you don't push it real hard and depending how your recovery is going.

I did one in Nov and then in Dec with no problem. I just thought of the Nov race as a training run. I did not go for any PR and put the extra effort in the second race.

Kevin

Sorry about all you've been through, particularly the loss of your friend. Life is so short, and parts of it can be pretty miserable. Happily it can also be beautiful and wonderful. We all get so busy and tied up with the day to day stuff that runs our lives that sometime we forget what really matters and what doesn't. I try to take time to reflect on the good fortune I've had and not obsess on the crummy part.

In the words of the poet Buffett, "24 hours, maybe 60 good years, it's really not that long a stay."

Good luck to you.

Craig

Kevin - So many :grouphug: :grouphug: to you! I am so sorry! I know this is a tough time for you.

Ice baths - :scared1: OUT OF CONTROL! Sometimes, in the summer I get in a cool bath or the cool pool at the YMCA...but I have NEVER taken an ice bath. TOO much of a wimp.

Ran with sis today. We did 5 miles in 54 min. She is training for her 1st 1/2 marathon (April 14th) and I am going to run it with her.:yay: She did so great!
I was going to ride my bike about 12-15 miles today but alas, I am too much of a wimp to get out on the bike in the cold. May just lift instead...or may take a nap....yeah right, like I have time for that.

Good Monday, Everyone!

I am happy to report I bounced (o.k., resolutely got up) out of bed this morning at 5:30 and did my half hour run. I am not a morning person, but I did feel good. DS's birthday dinner is tonight (ds is 9 today!), so I had to get it in before work.

Craig -- You have the right attitude. The glass is half full! :goodvibes

Kevin -- I'm so sorry for your loss. :grouphug: Kudos to keeping your workouts up during this difficult time. I have a minor in Anthro, so I had fond memories when I read your post!

Ice bath aficionados -- You are brave folks! I guess some day I will have to take one, but I'm putting it off as long as I can! :scared:

Hockeygirl -- Enjoy your rest day! Take a minute to do something special for you. :thumbsup2

Howard -- I hope you feel much better after more rest and relaxing! :)

Thanks to everyone who offered me encouragement! I am still trying to get names with signatures, so please bear with me!

Oh! and I wanted to publicly thank Kathy (NYcpa) for suggesting this thread to me. This is definitely the find of the year for me, to date!

:worship: The one and only time I tried to fill the tub with cold water (no ice) and just get in, I jumped right out as soon as my cheecks hit the water. :scared1:

Who else laughs hysterically when they hear Vic and Christa call themselves whimps?

Kevin - :grouphug: Work issues too? Talk about when it rains it pours. :umbrella: Hope you get some :sunny: soon! WTG on the work outs!!!!

Maria - 5:30 am runs for non mornign people are impressive!!! WTG! Although I'm often up before that, not way I could get my legs to run before 7.

Stephanie - My friend lives in Combined Locks. While she is a transplant, her dh grew up there.

Tinks - Way to go!!!!

Jim, yes, this is the way it should be done, but after a hot shower there is no way I could get into an ice bath. My hot shower after the ice bath is so short that my legs really don't reheat (DH's showers are another story, he is in there forever!). I am still so cold I need to jump under the covers because I am shivering.

You are hard core to actually read a book!

Cam--Great job on your runs. You are getting speedy!!! Are you feet and hands fully healed yet?
Cam - Way to go on "craving" the run. Your feet must be doing much better!

Thanks for asking, Krista and Carrie! My hands are as healed as they are going to get, I think. I have scars on both palms, though, and it looks like I did something horribly stupid with a knife. ICK! Now, the feet? That's a different matter entirely. Anyone with a weak stomache can just skip the rest of my gruesome, TMI post, but I am trying to figure out if these battle scars signal the true passage to being a "runner" or just some stupid move on my part that caused some long term damage.
I have already lost the second toenail on my right foot and now the big toe is about to lose the nail, too. UGH! My stomach is so weak at the thought. I thought it was going to be fine except for the blood blisters, but then the nail turned black-black at the base and that moved up the nail. :confused3 The left foot is much better. Both toenails are somewhat black but the bloodblisters are gone. The soles of my feet are a mess. I had no idea we could lose that many layers of skin and still walk on our feet. The really strange thing is that my feet never hurt during the marathon! It wasn't until I looked down at my sneakers at the WISH "tent" afterwards and saw bloody shoes, then bloody socks, that I had any clue. Now, having them touch the bedsheets is painful. 3 weeks later! :sad2: Oh, well, they sure won't be pretty for a long time, but I do feel like they are badges of honor! I considered "milking it" to use them as an excuse to avoid the TM, but figured I'd only be backsliding in my training, so might as well suck it up, right? :rotfl: No chance of running around my office with my shoes off for a while, though! ;)

Sunny -- so glad to see you. Please take it easy!

Kevin -- I am so sorry about your loss.

I apoligize for not being able to post sooner--- the past couple of weeks my life has kind of gone off the rails. It began with dealing with some significant work nonsense that was intense stressful, followed immedately by the passing of a co-worker that I've known for about 5 years. He had bravely fought brain cancer for 20 months before he passed, but it has been difficult nonetheless. The sum result for me has been some real evaluation of a lot of things in my life (as one is oft to do in these situations) and it has been really eye-opening in a lot of ways.

I suprised myself by being very vigilant about my workouts through all of this-- 5 days a week for the past two weeks, including some treadmill runs-- and that was a big help. Things feel much more back to normal this week, so I fear you'll be seeing a lot more of me :)

Well, back to the grind for now---
Take Care,
Kevin :earsboy:
Kevin- I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend and co-worker. You have had a very difficult time the past couple of months, and I wish you all the best. I'm very glad that you were able to get some runs in. I bet it was a good way to deal with your stress. All my best,

Cam-- my right second toe was completely white across the tip until a couple of nights ago. I finally decided to disect the blister/callous and the toe nail (which was under the big bubble) came off easily. The left toe nail was the same escept the entire tip was black. When I dissected it, I realised it was one big blood blister (again encompassing the toe nail). But this toe nail won't come off yet, but it is totally sidewise! YUCK TMI!!!! I figured I'd better clean them up a bit before I see the podiatrist in a few weeks. I don't want to get scolded.

Sunny

Kevin, I'm so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts.

Sunny

Kevin--:grouphug: I am so sorry for your loss and the difficult time you've been going through. Your WISH family is thinking about you and praying for you.:grouphug: :grouphug:

Hey all - well I was back on the bike at the gym this weekend after physio assured me I can't do the foot any damage by cycling. So I did 40 minutes Sat, 1.20 Sun - considering normally I can last 6 minutes on a bike I'm faintly stunned by this, and no book either. As for recovery - he tried something new with the ultrasound this week and there are now points in the day when I can put my foot down and it feels normal. I don't think I'll be running next week, but hopefully within another 2-3 weeks. I've worked out that as long as I start again by March I'm on schedule anyway. It's got to get better soon - otherwise he's going to try acupuncture and while I'm quite willing to have needles stuck in my face for the sake of vanity, there's something about someone sticking in a needle, leaving it there and twiddling it that makes me feel very queasy!!!

Just read all last weeks posts, and Terri I know what you're going through. Normally any injury I've had has been cured by a one shot of physio, to have something that doesn't respond fast, that they can't tell me when it'll respond - and most annoyingly of all doesn't actually hurt is soo frustrating - and like you, to not do it while running is the worst thing of all!!!

Which brings me to Jen: I had burstitis in my knee shortly before the Disney half a few years ago, I saw a physio had one shot of ultrasound and it cleared up within days. Not sure how easy it is to see physios in the US but it might be worth a try.

Ashley: I was interviewing a famous British fitness trainer for a job recently and told him about the Goofy and asked for any advice. His quote: take prozac and a lot of caffeine!!! I'm not sure that helped. Also re fizzy feet, I know if you use a stairmaster or similar, the numb feet thing is quite common and caused by you pressing on the nerves if you're leaning too much on your toes, haven't heard about it for running, but maybe get friend to check how tight she ties her shoes - or whether she's running on her toes.

Vic: I live in New Zealand and even I've been to Seaside!!!

Pat: My car is called Snowball, and I think it would do less damage to the Total Gym than the husky!

Anyway, that's it for me, physio again tomorrow for another ultrasound blast. Actually stupid question here, that someone might know the answer to: I've been taking anti-inflamms for 10 days now (Strong ones) have run out and think I should give stomach a rest so don't want to go on nurofen yet - got anti-flam gel but heel is strapped so can't apply it directly to the 'affected area' - what do you reckon chances of anti-flam gel working if I apply it to the top of the foot are, logic says some should still get to the heel - but any thoughts from the medical types in the crew (Lynne, Mel, anyone!) Helen

Hi all!

I just had to stop by and share. I got kicked :cool1: by my little fetus for the first time yesterday!!!! :cloud9: I guess I had to report his/her exercise since I have done much of my own lately. ;)

Take care!

CAM............OMG what happened to you to cause all these injuries...sorry If I have missed it somewhere.

Kevin: So sorry for your loss,:grouphug:

Kim

Dena -- That is so exciting!!! You are growing a little runner!  :cool1: :goodvibes:

Kim -- I fell during the marathon before mile 7 and cut my left knee and both palms, wrenched my right knee and wrist and did something to my left shoulder. That is all healed now, but I also banged my toes up somehow during the marathon and four of them remain a total mess! I know -- it sounds gruesome and gross, doesn't it?

A quick word on ice baths. I took my first and only one after the 2006 half and I am a believer! I stayed at BCV so I was able to throw a fluffy towel into the dyer to heat up before I took the plunge. I wrapped my top half in the towel, sat in the tub while the cold water filled it up then dumped in the ice. A quick warm shower then off to Epcot for fish and chips and a beer - good times!

Susan

Hey all! I don't have much time as I am coaching a basketball game in exactly 7 minutes (I'm the girls coach here at school.)

I just want to say "Thanks!" for all the replies. I am going to check with Julie about running on her toes. That might be it! It could also be the laces, but she insists that it's not.

I am going to the gym tonight to run and do spin class, then I have volleyball games. Big night of Monday exercise to start the week off right!

I will post more later or tomorrow!

Ashley
