Wk of Jan 15--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

DisneyGirl- You discovered the key--finding what works best for you. I used the MFM walk/run program for the 1/2 and it worked great. I finished in 3:11. Not lightning speed by any measure, but I kept a steady pace and did not tire at the end.

I rode 13 miles on Sunday on my road bike and 6.7 miles at the gym this morning. Today was hill training, which was not too bad. Maybe on Thursday I will actually try something other than Level 1 (the lowest setting). ;) Tomorrow will be my first post-marathon run. Looking forward to running again.

UPS finally delivered my Asics last night. I look good in them. :cool2: If only that box could talk about its long journey via plane, train, and truck. I am glad that the long shoe saga is finally done!

Okay, back to work. :badpc:

Can't wait to start to train again. I am down for a couple days with a muscle strain.

I tried to push it to quickly after my first 1/2 and did a little damage. I should be good to go by the 23rd - I feel like a slug now when I don't run.

Chicago Distance Classic ??????

Wow that is actually not too horribly far from where I live. About 4.5 hrs so definitely within driving distance. I may have to consider looking into that one. I am worried about the heat in August though.

I am definitely considering the Minnie in May. I wonder how long I can wait before signing up?

In the paper this am there was a notice about a endurance training club opening in my area with tri certified coaches. Hmmm maybe after my ortho apt. You tri geeks have me thinking :rotfl2:

My PT apt is this afternoon so hopefully I will have some good news to report tonight!

Happy training everyone!

::MinnieMo

I too am considering the minnie but will be a last minute thing!
soooooooooooooooooooooooo I am about to the ole TM out and dust it off.
Although, I have been to the gym everyday since i got back, wanted to give myself a little rest time after the marathon. Today also makes one week

since I gave up smoking!!!!!!!!!

wow the hardest thing I think I have ever done. no joke!

but I am feeling yucky today very irriatable and just well, not myself.......
so figure ill hit the TM and go for a straight hour. I was able to do that while being a smoker so thats my goal.

till next time!
renee

Renee,

Keep up the excellent work. I know it's hard but you can pull through. I think I'll pull out my TM and have it work me a bit. 16 weeks for the Minnie will be here before I know it. And then the 2007 1/2 will be here before we all know it :)

Hey all!!

I LOVE the pictures you've all been posting. I found a few of myself in the Lost & Found on the ASI website, but have no idea how to post them here. Any ideas??

Question - if you recall I've had some knee probs. throuhgout training for the 1/2. I just sorta ignored it & kept plugging along. Best I could tell it was "runners knee", which I believe is swollen cartilage under the knee cap. My knees were ok during the 1/2 & didn't hurt @ all afterwards (while the rest of me was pretty stiff). Usually I can't walk up & down stairs too well after a long run like that. O-K-....

When I got home last week I tried to run for 30 mins. & my knees were screamin? What gives? I've decided to just CT for a while. I've never seen a Dr. for an athletic injury, but I suppose I should now. What do I do? Make an appt. w/ my reg. Dr., then they refer me or something? I know this ?'s probably a no-brainer for most of you, but I don't want a dopey Dr. who tells me "easy fix, don't run!" I want to run the full next year. Any advice what kind of Doc I should be looking for?? Would it be an orthopaedic or a sports medicine clinic? I'm dreading this because of all the bogus advice I may possibly get!

H-E-L-P!

Jodi

hi........
ty kimickey! I just did it! I didnt go for an hour but did 36 minutes stright putme at 3 miles then walked for 4 minutes!

I dont want to over do it!

about amonth ago, I did a straight hour at 4.5 mph and got about 4.25 miles......... but then I didnt get back on my treadmill for about another 2 weeks.

Think I scared my body out of it.
today wasnt too bad and its doable...............
I can do it everyday I think! :confused3
or at least a few times a week! lol ::yes::

renee :flower3:

Renee - WTG! That is an awesome thing to do for yourself. Keep with it! Here is some :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: coming your way!

Sunny - I am with you on your list of new year's resolutions! I have been doing great on the WW so far after the Goofy! I also have to up my workouts a little! Also...I have been thinking about the stupid things people say...like, "I cannot believe YOU run?" (do you remember the posts about that a LONG time ago? I think it was after you won your division in a 1/2.) Well girl let the Evil Queen tell you something...YOU LOOK GREAT! and if anyone ever says that to you again flex for them, then kick their BUTT! You do look like a runner! Am I rambling?

Anywho.....The tri training continues.....I biked 7 something miles (up hill course..very high resistence) and ran a 5k on the dreadmill. All this took me an hour. Calling all tri geeks...is that OK? Will tri to get some ab work in tonight and swim/run tomorrow. I have to admit when I got off the bike and started running, my legs were so tight. But, after about a mile I loosened up and was fine.

DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT put this off any farther. I was an idiot and let my hip/back injury go and missed out on the 1/2 marathon. I am regretting that decision so much right now :sad1:

PLEASE go see a DR about this. I would first start out at your regular DR because unless your area is different from my own, the orthos require you to be referred to them before you can be seen. I would NOT take just anyone they recommend. Make inquires of both your DR, nurses, those you know of who is the best SPORTS DR in your area. Many that are not will not understand the athletes need to be active.

I am sending a truck load of :wizard: your way!!!!!!!!

Jodi--it depends on your insurance--some insurance require referrals and others do not. Yes see your doc and insist on a referral to a specialist. Sometimes those with runners knee can run with those strappy doo-hickey things under the knee cap (or the cho-pat for both above and below the knee cap). It helps to prevent the rubbing where you are feeling pain so that pain will not happen.

ETA: I agree with Minnie DO NOT wait. Initial injury for my meniscus was 15 or so years ago with further injury in August. I waited until October b/c I was clueless and thought it was just normal ordinary stuff.

Perhaps call a local running club for word of mouth referrals on runner-friendly docs and therapists ("friendly" is key to success!). Then look them up, call them up--then get your referral to them.

There are docs that say "when it hurts, don't do that" and then there are docs that say "let's find out the source of pain (i.e. NOT the cause--we know it's running LOL!) and see if we can fix it". You want someone who will say the latter and then help heal you and make you stronger so as not to repeat the ailment or injury.

I've had luck with PT's. But my PT also is very athletic and understands :) (the one I saw for sacrum--the ortho and his PT understood athletes as well).

Mel--link for you about running and pregnancy---some notes to ponder :).

Renne! Woo hoo for you! Keep up the great work!

Renee - Congrats on 1 week. I quit smoking 6 years ago after trying multiple times. What got me through it the last time is telling myself that I didn't want to do those first few days again! It is the best thing you ever have done for yourself! Way to go!!

I am off to the gym then work. Today is 1.5 miles. Last time it felt great, so I hope today it feels as good.

Waaaaaaaahhhhh - I wanna come next year. It's like my little life is empty now with nothing to aim for (yes, I have a half in 32 days and I can't actually face running at all yet, and I know I'm doing Disneyland, but it's the not the same as the idea of Goofy 2007). I was sitting talking over Xmas holidays with Tim this morning and all I could think was 'I wanna go Goofy, I wanna go Goofy' but I just don't think he can take the time off work again next year and it's a bit far for me to come alone - and lets not even get into the cost.

All this talk of tris reminds me that I entered one way back in June and it's in a few weeks, but I can't actually remember when - I've blocked it out. I'm kind of hoping it's when I'm away (off to Thailand to meet my mum - and then Tokyo Disney) so I don't have to do the swimming thing - not to mention the fact that I haven't got on my bike since I got off it in last years race. The best piece of advice I can give anyone don't forget to untie your shoelaces - I forgot and that's why I did 1 hour and 2 seconds!!!! Helen

Christa - Seems ok to me. You might want to ask Ron the expert! Just practicing some spinning might be good, but I don't know. Most of my riding is hills with the boy and it seemed to be good for the race. I'm looking at graduating him to an adams trail-a-bike and out of the trailer!!! I let him sit on one today and he seemed interested.

Phil and i did a 7 mile trail run today (my booty hurts!) I haven't been doing many big hills. It was really fun and nice to be in the woods and dirt again! I did get a blister on my heel from my new shoes and a bloody toenail :crazy2:

Tomorrow is rest day! (bible study mocha day!!!)

Helen - you gotta do goofy!

Hey everyone!!! I'm a little late posting because our computer crashed the day we got back from Disney - UGH!!! DH worked his magic and got it fixed, though! :flower: It is taking me forever to catch up!!! I did post a quick race report on the Full marathon thread. You all are awesome!!! I'm so glad I got to meet many of you!!!! ;) If I forgot to mention a wisher - I am soooo sorry!!! I really have forgotten alot of the details of the race in the last week - including the pain. :teeth: Hmmmm... what kind of torture should I aim for next???

Upcoming races for me: Minnie 15K - May 7, Danskin Tri at Disney - May 14, possibly a local tri in the middle of June, DL 5K (DH is doing the half) - September, and we have yet to decide who is doing what for next year's marathon, but we will definitely be there running something! :flower:

Training wise we haven't done much. DH got the stomach flu on Thursday, and I had it on Friday. I still haven't gotten all my strength back. I did have a swim lesson on Thursday that was great!!! I have another one this Thursday, but the temp is supposed to be 39 degrees in the morning! :scared1: They better have that pool heated nice and toasty!!!! :rotfl: It is at the community rec pool, so it's up to the county if they spend the money to turn the heaters on... Depending on how DS and I are feeling tomorrow, I will try to get a long walk in the morning. Running is slated for Friday or Saturday morning. It's so great to hear from everyone again - it feels like the race was forever long ago! :flower:

Oh, and one cute story about the Family 5K I had to share... We wanted DS (age 2.5) to do his first 5K - we've been practicing forever for him to run across the finish line. So, race morning comes and we put his bib number on (much screaming), put him in the backpack which he apparently outgrew in the last couple of weeks (more screaming), waited for the start and the fireworks (a whole lot more screaming...), then the confetti guns went off with all the confetti flying everywhere - he LOVED trying to catch them!!! He did okay for about half the race, but we were seriously wondering why in the world we did this... Then he got tired of it all. So, a little bit from the finish line, we took him out of the backpack and said "Run to the finish" - you can probably guess what happened next... He threw himself on the ground and screamed. We tried to stand him up, pull him, drag him, nothing... So then we saw Pluto near the finish - we said "Run to Pluto". He took one look and ran as fast as his little legs could go, pumping his arms, and grinning from ear to ear. He hugged Pluto, lots of high fives, etc. Then - Pluto took his hand and ran him across the finish line with all the spectators cheering and clapping, and photographers taking pictures!!! It was sooo perfect!!! :lovestruc (We found out the next day that he had the flu, and probably wasn't feeling well at the 5K, but I'm so glad he had such a great experience. He still tells everyone about running with Pluto!)

I'm sorry we missed you all at the breakfast - DS was still sick Monday morning, and we were trying to figure out how to get him home without causing him too much pain and stress. Fortunately he slept all the way home. Yea!!! :goodvibes

I'll check in with you all later - time to head to work.

Krista- No way am I doing the Country Music race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :scared: I know it will be a great event, but have you ever been to downtown Nashville? Very hilly to say the least. I dont mean to discourage you-just warn you, you need to throw in alot of hill work into your training. I talked to a girl that did the 1/2 last year & she said she was cussing from mile 1. I do think I am going to volunteer for it though. John Bingham is going to be there.

Liz- I have met for lunch with a couple of local WISHers in the last month. The first time I told DH I was having lunch with someone I met off the internet, he looked at me like I was insane and said "well then, so am I " :) As if I was going on a date. I told him she was a mom w/3 kids. He said "sure, that's what they all say" I am penciling in Chicago on my race schedule.

I had my bone scan today, but it will take a couple of days for my DR to get the report & call me about what we are going to do next. I'm going crazy with no exercise so I am planning on bike & swimming this week.

My DH asked me to sign him up for the DL Half :cool1: and I just did! He did the LWs with me in the fall and really pushed my pace with no training at all on his part. Of course he is 6'3" to my 5'5", and is more than a couple of years younger than I am, but we are going to train together - should be fun!

Now I just have to figure out where to stay.....I am leaning towards Candy Cane Inn right at the moment.

TiffJ- PD on your bone scan.
Renee- Lotsa of PD for the quitting smoking!!!
Christa- Yes, generally it is only about a mile that your legs feel like Jello. You certainly seem to have the right idea. One thing that supposedly helps make the transition from biking to running is to soft pedal the last 1/2-1 mile on the bike. High cadence but not pushing a big gear.

I ordered some Spinervals DVDs prior to X-mas, 4 of the Aero Base Builder ones and one Ultraconditioning Full Body, and finally did the first one today. The aerobic base builder workout was 83+ minutes and was actually a bit challenging particularly towards to end doing the high cadence intervals. I'm not sure I have the bike computer set quite right, either that or the resistance/tension settings on the trainer are a little light because I know I couldn't have ridden the distance/speeds that it was giving me credit for outside right now. In a few months, yeah, but... That was before lab today and then I went and lifted after lab. One of my classmates laughs at me for looking lost at the gym. I really have avoided the strength training with a vengeance but know that I shouldn't. I really am trying to do Everything right this year and hopefully it will pay off with some good results.

New year's resolution question- is just the women that all want to lose some weight? Even those of you who look great? Or is it the runner transformation in us? I want to lose 10 pounds because lean is good when you're dragging your sorry butt 140.6 miles.(I want thin legs too but have resigned myself to that never happening) I'm actually close to where I last raced at in 2003 but feel I could comfortably lose 10 and still have a healthy percent body fat. My weight loss issue is I really like to eat so only tend to lose weight when my activity level goes up. I've made my diet healthier and that seems to have helped after the first year of med school 10(all gone) due to too much studying and not enough activity but I've also increased my activity. I always worry about the balance between getting enough calories to fuel the workouts and recovery vs trying to lose some weight. Does anybody know of a good way of calculating daily calorie requirements? Just estimated BMR plus activity seems like it may be underestimating :confused3 My mom is about as sympathetic on this issue as she was about how unhappy I was with my marathon.

Thanks for the advice on my knees, Minnie & Lisa.

I called my primary physician today & they gave me an appt. for a month from now! What gives??!! When she asked me if I needed to come in today, "is the pain that bad" & I said no, she tried to give me an appt. on Feb. 27th! :headache: When I balked, they bumped it up to Feb 8th. Great. No wonder why ERs find themselves full of people w/ non-emergent ailments. Frustrating to say the least.

Renee - Good luck quitting smoking! Go for it!!

You Tri group out there are crazy. My husband wants to try a tri, but he's very afraid of the swimming part. He's so "in shape" it's ridiculous.

I think I'm going to sign up for the full soon, I'm still on high from the 1/2, though starting to touch down a little.

Does THAT  really count as cross training??

Sweet.

Jodi--on a bad day call and say you need same day urgent care. Call me naughty, but that is what I do. I mean--go running and so...oooh owww oooh---what did I do?

Don't tell 'em LLP sent ya! ;)
