Wk of Jan 15--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey everyone! Just a quick post b/4 I pick up DDs from school. Did 45 min of swimming today then a kick boxing class with my sister. I thought I shoud get used to doing something after swiming. Because that is what I will have to do at the tri. All that and it only gave me 12 WW points! :crazy2:  I am so much more hungry than just 12 points! It is hard to live on 20 + AP points alone. well I guess that does give me 32 points for today. They will be eaten! ::yes::

I cannot believe I am saying this (yes, again, but a little more firmly this time) the FULL in January! I figure if I could lose another 30 pounds this year and really work on strength and core training, I could probably make this the most exciting 367 days of my entire life. What do you guys think?
Oh...Cam! The full...THAT IS AWESOME! :cool1:
Oh Cam....... for doing the full and for me not being able to do the Half with you. Ahh, thats what I get for starting a year too late.
Honeibee - That is great that you are doing the half! Don't  .
C

Honeibee -- You have to understand the very positive aspect of this! I can CHEER on the 1/2 marathon WISHERS to my heart's content! Do you have any idea at all how much it meant to me to hear people cheering for us? It was AWESOME!!!! I cannot WAIT to do that for those in pursuit of a Donald medal!

Pat -- I am right with you, kiddo. I almost exclusively walked the 1/2 this year, and not with much time to spare and I don't know what I would have done without Rhonda (akasleepingbeauty)'s encouragement right next to me. And yet, I feel like I HAVE to go for the Mickey medal. I am hoping that I am starting from a place where I am so much more fit right now than I was a year ago, and even though I won't make great strides in my training (going from 0- something is easier, I think, than going from fit to marathon, if you know what I mean), I need a huge commitment to keep me on track. I am afraid that if I was training for the 1/2 again, I might not work as hard and try to lose more weight and get more fit, since I know I was able to pull it off at this fitness level and this weight. Does that make sense?

I think about how hard our WISHers worked to do the full this year and how wiped out some of them were afterwards, and I am like :worship: but also going "what am I? NUTS? What makes me think I could do what they did? And then, that little voice in the back of my head (yeah, you all have been hearing about it all year) says "but you are "ONLY" walking it! Yeah, right! I really think it will be even more important to train for jogging intervals for the full because I have every reason to believe I may be crawling by about mile 17 and will need all the cushion I could get.

Honeibee -- Did you ever think the day would come that you'd lament not being able to walk on the treadmill? You go, girl!!! I am so proud of you!

Christa -- You are so awesome! I can't believe you did that much exercise today. 12 APs just doesn't seem fair! I hope you are planning to do something really, really good with them! Spend them well! I have taken to making huge quantities of nearly free veggie soup so that I can spend my points on other things (like 1 4 point devil dog for dessert each of the past two nights! )

I am really excited about all of us supporting each other through another year of first, training to train, and then training. And for some people, training for successive events. :cheer2:

Sunny - I am with you on your list of new year's resolutions! I have been doing great on the WW so far after the Goofy! I also have to up my workouts a little! Also...I have been thinking about the stupid things people say...like, "I cannot believe YOU run?" (do you remember the posts about that a LONG time ago? I think it was after you won your division in a 1/2.) Well girl let the Evil Queen tell you something...YOU LOOK GREAT! and if anyone ever says that to you again flex for them, then kick their BUTT! You do look like a runner! Am I rambling?

Christa

Oh you are the sweetest thing  And speaking of runners, you look llike and are an awsome runner, don't let clueless people sway you to think any differently. Most people are totally clueless when it comes to marathoning. As for the swimming APs, I haven't been swimming, but I do recall always being ravenous after I swam, even when I knew I didn't burn that many calories. I wonder if it has something to do with the body temp lowering in the water? Sounds like you are doing great to me!

Lynn-- be careful on the weight issue. You are very thin. I know of a woman (friend of a friend) who kept losing for better performance until she got too thin and injury prone and illness prone. Its a delicate balance. As for calculating daily calorie requirements, I know a very slow and accurate method (which I do): weigh yourself every day, record all your activity calorie burn (estimated the best you can) and all the calories you take in. Average them on a weekly basis and watch the trend! I know (in WW terms) my average activity points per week is ~60 (normally, not during peak training), my break even points based on that activity level is ~52 (an outrageous number in WW terms! they tell me to have 22 points per day +APs :rotfl2: like that will ever happen :rotfl: ). Actually, I followed the program exactly to a T the week of Thanksgiving and lost 6 lbs. I aim at 40 points per day plus APs, in hopes of losing slowly. I rarely hit my mark!

You TG (Tri Geeks) are killing me. I'm so tempted to start shopping the sites for this new "free" sport of which you speak. I don't dare!

Cam-- Whooo Hoooooo  I'm so psyched to see you setting your goals high and feeling good about them. You go, girl! That Mickey Medal is yours (with a whole lotta bling along the way)!!!!! I too have been denied my WISH fix by the server all day :crazy2:

MelR-- so where are the photo IDs for your lost pics ;) I haven't had a chance to look at the lost and found ones yet. But I did search the race results for Massachusetts residence to see if I knew anyone! I found three people from Lexington, but I don't know them. THe woman that crosssed the finish line right before me was from MA.

I jelloized my arms last night. It was the first serious upperbody WO since before the race so I feel good. I also did rowing, forced myself to stay off the TM. Today I have a sore throat, so I might not WO.

Is it time to go back to Disney yet????? All of the sudden I am keenly aware of all the work I have been putting off for the past 3-4 months and now I have to deal with it. I'd rather run ::yes::

Waaaaaaaahhhhh - I wanna come next year. It's like my little life is empty now with nothing to aim for (yes, I have a half in 32 days and I can't actually face running at all yet, and I know I'm doing Disneyland, but it's the not the same as the idea of Goofy 2007). I was sitting talking over Xmas holidays with Tim this morning and all I could think was 'I wanna go Goofy, I wanna go Goofy' but I just don't think he can take the time off work again next year and it's a bit far for me to come alone - and lets not even get into the cost.
Helen

I know how you feel! The idea of me making the '07 Goofy is so ridiculous for soooo many reason (money being about 12 of them). So being a runner of sound mind, I signed myself up for Goofy and Dx up for the half. That does make sense, right? If one is concerned about money, plunking down $300 a year in advance for a race one can't possibly attend is by far the most logical solution. (Susy Orman would back me up on this one I'm sure)

Sunny

Cam - You're way frther ahead than i was last year at htis itme. You CAN do it!!!!

Thank you so much for your confidence and encouragement, Sunny and Carrie (and everyone else here!). You know you guys are my heroes! :worship:

The stupid server is driving me!! :upsidedow :scared: :upsidedow

Cam-- :worship: Wow!! You are the woman! I can't believe you are doing a 15K, 2 1/2 marathons, and a full marathon in a year's time!! How much vacation time do you have?? :cool2:

Christa--I can't believe people question that you are a runner. You look like such an athletic person, they are all just jealous. ::yes:: Oh, and I don't think you have to worry about gaining weight with all of the physical activity you do. What an awesome role model you are to your girls.

Sunny--You are funny and your reasoning makes perfect sense. :goodvibes

Tiffany--Thanks for the warning on Nashville. I've been to Nashville twice in college for the Dove Awards in 1999 and 2000, but I wasn't really paying attention to incline of the roads. :) Cincinnati is very hilly, I think I can find places to train for the hills. Where I live is pretty flat, but I can drive about 20 minutes and get some monster hills.

Honeibee--Your enthusiam amazes me. I think you will do just fine in the 1/2, with all the energy you have. I ran the half wearing an ankle brace and it was no big deal, don't be afraid to wear your knee brace!

I better get back to work (or rather back to faking, I've been sick the past 2 days and I've been pretty much worthless), I'll check back later, that is if the server is up.

Krista -- It is so funny you ask. I am tormenting myself with knowing I'll be in all these great places with little, if any time to actually vacation! I learned my lesson this year about flying in a couple days early and trying to do the parks, even at a relaxed pace!

For the Minnie, I am flying in Friday night after work and home on Monday night, only missing one day.

For the Chicago, I will probably do the same thing, especially since the race is on Sunday. Fly in late Friday night or early Saturday a.m. and fly home on Monday, missing one day of work.

Hoping to spend a couple days in DL after the 1/2 there. Probably flying in Friday night for the Sunday race and flying home Wednesday night. 3 days vacation! WOOHOO!!

January is a whole year from now, but I definitely learned a lot this year and we won't fly down until at least Friday (I already warned Howard that if he isn't available to fly down for any WISH event that may be planned for Friday night, I will have to go ahead of him). We'll probably spend 2 or 3 days down there after the full on Sunday. See? Only 8 days total in the next year! Doesn't sound too bad when you look at it that way. Convincing judges and colleagues not to schedule stuff in conflict with race plans has been easier than I expected! ::yes::

I should mention that I am planning on taking a couple non-race related vacation days over the next 10 months -- visiting DS at camp and his performance days there, moving DD into college this summer (I hope!) and taking at least one day before Thanksgiving to head to Hilton Head DVC for our traditional Thanksgiving there. Again, it depends on DD's college schedule, etc. Funny how that all is up in the air but I know exactly where the 1/2 marathons, 15K and full are and when and have already blocked those days on my calendar.

I realize I am rambling. But I have been so unsuccessful in accessing the DIS today :crazy2: that I figure I should seize the opportunity to gab whenever the server isn't too busy to accomodate me. :scratchin

Oh Krista...you are so sweet. :flower3: If you only knew how not like me this is, I mean the old me anyway. This is all new to me and I am just as amazed at me as anybody. :teeth:

Geez, thats an awful sentence. I hope no one here is an English teacher.

Help! Help! Somebody brought in Girl Scout cookies! Thin Mints no less! :scared:

Judy

Wow!! Y'all have been so busy while I've been at Bible study and sipping mochas!!

Judy - Send the thin mints to me PLEASE!!!! I didn't even get hit up this year, much less know it was cookie time!!! Now i'm going to have to drive by street corners until i see the girls with the cookie surplus just to fill my cookie needs!

Lynn - I second sunny on her weight comments. You know your body better than anyone, but you are already thin. I notice that when I don't have a high enough calorie intake, it really slows me down. With all of your physical activity, I can't imagine how a calorie restricted diet would help you feel better or go stronger! BYW, phil was so impressed with your Ironman resume!! He thinks he might be inspired to try one! If he does, I'll keep you posted, and maybe you can give him some pointers!

Sunny - Gee, I wonder why I didn't post my lost photo ID #'s, hummm... I can't imagine why :scared: BECAUSE THE PICTURES ARE WRETCHED!!!!!!!
I knew I had poor posture, but wow... the pics speak volumes about my running form! They are almost worse than my hike-a-bike pics. I havent forgotten the bike pics, I just haven't hijacked phil's computer yet!! Since we have been on the subject of this yrs athletic goals and photos, My personal athletic goal is to look tough in one of the action shots from my races!!!! I need to look at the tough pics and practice the poses. Then I'll have to become more aware of where the photographers are on the course!! I might just have to do a tri to get the pic of me pulling off my swim cap while running up to the TA! I was smiling in the one's from june (not very tough) I was pretending to run fast in the running pics ( how embarrasing!)

Cam- - Clearly you are hooked!!!! I love it that you already have your race schedule lined up for the year!

Today I spent my Christmas money on an Adams Trail-a-bike. It is like a tandem that hooks onto my seatpost and is the right size for the boy. It has pedals and handlebars, but not breaks or gears! We made it down our street to the cul-de-sac before he was begging to stop. It is a whole new sensation for him as his training wheels on his little bike won't let him lean. I wanted to get something for our warm weather rides together b/c he is getting bigger and is not so keen on being dragged around in the trailer. I MUST RIDE THOUGH! I'm hoping we can get better by the spring/summer and we can do a family bike ride on some rails to trails multi use trails. The first step is going to be getting the screamer (that would be the boy) comfortable and actually get him to pedal. When I stopped today, he was white knuckleing the handlebars and leaning way forward almost sitting on the top tube. It was actually quite funny (do you think the neighbors will think I'm mean?)

Oh Melissa.....sorry but it's TOO LATE! :faint: I ate an ENTIRE SLEEVE MYSELF! :faint:

Well, I guess I don't have to worry about the electricity being out. I'll just push the treadmill around the room. That'll work off the 8,579 calories I just consumed. :crazy2:

Well I finally have commitments from my mom & best friend for the Minnie Marathon!!! :cool1: Looks like I got me some plannin' to do ::MinnieMo We will prob get there Friday & stay until Tues. I learned the hard way from the 1/2 this year. Do not tour & shop prior to race. Even slowly!

Cam-Seems like we have the same things floating around in our heads. I keep thinking-if I trained for the 1/2 in 4 months surely I can do the full in a year. Right ? Right now I am doing the Minnie, a sprint tri Memorial day weekend. Hopefully the Chicago Classic (although the DL 1/2 is still in my head) and then the full Jan '07. I'm sure there will be some local 5k's thrown in there. That means a full year of training & a full year of being healthier! That has to be good. I've got to find out the verdict on my foot before I decide exactly what ones I'm doing.

Judy-watch out , those aliens that have captured the rest of us self proclaimed couch potatoes seem to be coming for you now.

I'm going swimming for the first time tonight (not ever, just for training purposes) I am meeting my friend that has decided to do it w/me & her DH. He is going to coach us. He used to be a competitive swimmer & has done several tri's. It should be interesting tonight to say the least.

I've also started the hunt for a bike. So hopefully will be full steam ahead soon.

Yeah Cam to deciding to do the full. I know what you mean about the flying in, racing, and then leaving. I'll get in late Fri for the Minnie and then fly back out again Sun evening, and am doing the same thing for the St Anthony's tri in St Pete. I prefer the come in Thurs, leave Mon but just can't do it for those races. Tell Howard that WISH activities are impt and that he's invited too, then he'll have to agree to arrive early enough.

Honeibee(Judy)- I wrote something last fall that seems more appropriate than ever. Sometime when we weren't paying attention due to all the training we are doing, the aliens came and replaced us with, gasp, runners. This alien replacement leads to things ranging from doing negative split workouts for the first time to signing up for a half/full/Goofy to just being excited to be doing activity. It's a good thing, I promise.

MelR and Sunny- I know I can do more damage to my training if I don't take in enough. I think I'll basically just follow my workout schedule and eat 'normally' and see what happens. If I start losing weight too quickly or too much, I'll know I need to eat more.
MelR- no, you're not a bad parent in wanting to instill a desire to be outside and exercise in the Boy. He'll get used to it.

Christa/Sunny/anyone else interested- I had known for years that running makes me not want to eat for a while(getting over that unfortunately) but I was always starving after a swim workout. I just recently read a good explanation as to why(and it also confirmed it wasn't just in my head). "Core body temperature is a major hunger trigger. Humans get hungry when they get cold. Exercise almost always increases acute core body temperature significantly, which reduces appetite. One exception is swimming, during which the water usually draws more heat away from the body than exercise produces. The idea that swimming is not the best exercise for reducing body fat is not a myth. Research consistently shows that peopletend to eat more after swimming than other types of exercise or when they don't exercise. One solution to this problem is a short trip to the sauna or hot tub." This is out of the Reaching Optimal Race Weight chapter in the book, "The Triathlete's Guide to Run Training" by Ken Mierke. I know from personal experience that you can lose weight swimming though but probably not at the level that a 'casual' swimmer does it. It took swimming 5000-7000 yd practices 6 days a week. I don't swim yardage that high anymore nor do I need to for triathlon.

So today's workouts- swam 3250 yds and then ran 3 miles on the indoor track. Should have ran 4 but I wimped out. I probably shouldn't have put the two back to back with no lunch until after. If I could have/hadn't been too much of a wimp to run outside, I would have spaced them better and done the full distance. The winds are still obnoxious but it seems to have stopped raining and I even see a little blue sky through my skylights.

Cam, you go girl!! You absolutely can do the full next year. You already have the base. I think a walk/run program would be great for you. The full is such a natural progression, I am so happy you are taking the leap.

Christa and Sunny, I am interested in the WW program. Do you both actually weigh in and attend meetings? I am not familiar with the point thing, is it easy to use?

Also, Christa and Bree, your endurance amazes me. The goofy thing and all, BUT when you add in the fact that you both ran the Charlotte marathon a month earlier (with a great time, I might add), your feat was awesome!

Judy, Judy, Judy, as Krista said, your enthusiasm is great! I tell ya, we missed you marathon weekend. I hope to meet you next year.

Lynne, I like your explanation of the core body temperature thing. I am always cold. I have 3 layers on now and the heat is at 72!! I always want to graze. Now if I can just figure out a way to lay off the donuts.

Tiff, yahoo on the Minnie Marathon. Isn't it great when you can influence others into an active lifestyle. :flower:

Does anyone have a Spring marathon on the docket? I was thinking about running one in April, May time frame.

Lisa - What is a "cho-pat" brace?

Judy

They make knee braces and such--this is what I wore.

eng.dual_action.jpg

Really does nothing for the ACL--but it does help the knee cap and all my muscles and such going into the kneecap were what were wake so this provided a smidge of stability for me.

Cho-pat makes other braces that you might check out that might be better for ACL.

Most of there stuff seems to be for kneecap issues and stuff, so not sure if they'll help you out much come to think of it (after searching around).

You can check out the website:

I'm here! :crazy2: <------- This is Cam scrambling into the thread, after what seems like HOURS of being told first that the server was too busy at the moment and then that the server could not be found! *@#$%@&^ server! It's not like I was ordering a lapu lapu or a kungaloosh or anything like that! :rotfl2: Just looking for a place to hang out with my favorite WISHers!

So, here's the thing. I am doing the Minnie with Rhonda in May (DD17 wants to go. I'm still debating that one). Now I am pretty much committed to doing the Chicago Distance Classic in August with Liz and Lily and whoever we can convince to join us (maybe David and Denise?) and then the DL 1/2 in September, and then . . . . BTW, Honeibee, in case you didn't hear amazon has the Garmin 201 on sale right now for 99.99 with free shipping. I twisted Liz's arm last night (I am from Joisey you know! :teeth: ) and she finally ordered one! Isn't your birthday coming soon? ::yes::

Go for it girly girl! That Mickey is yours!!! ::yes::

Thank you so much, Colleen! You do realize how much I am going to count on you guys to remind me as the year goes on that this is do-able if I put in the steps, right?

BTW, I follow WW too, though I do it all on my own after having attended meetings for a while. I swear it is the most realistic approach to weight loss I can find. Real life food and real life flexibility. It is how I lost 60 pounds in the past 13 months and hopefully, how I will lose another 35 in the next year or so. I think you will love it. If you have any questions at all that I can help you with, please feel free to PM me.

Thank you, Lisa! I am hoping you will be doing the Mickey-medal dance too, or at least there to cheer us on if you decide you need another Donald! All I want to know is how you made the time to train to do the 2006 1/2 so successfully on top of being a mom and your surgery and all the party planning you did for WISH besides your TNT commitments and all the great information you researched and shared here? I get exhausted just thinking about it! :faint:

There is one just a few states north of you in May -- the Delaware Marathon is the only marathon run in this state (May 21, 2006), so people come from all over the country (and the world) who are trying to do one marathon in each of the 50 states. Registration is limited to 600 people (Howard and his HS buddy, who is an accomplished marathoner, are within the first 60 registered). Let me know if you want me to get you any information on it!

I get exhausted just thinking about it! :faint:

My TNT fundraising was done before my husband left on his field assignment last summer. I may have forgotten to mention that detail of me flying solo all season. So I was *single mom* for the entire season.

Party planning--I didn't do much--just posted when I could and Mel (Chimera) deserves the accolades for that. She found out the scoop for Trails End. I just helped by calling in on my long run. Had my cell phone with me--figured...hey noone to talk with...I'll call Disney Dining. :hyper2: The CM on the phone thought it was funny. :hyper:

And running (I'm a slacker with cross training and such--so that was practically nonexistant)--I woke early for the Treadmill--it always woke my kids up--and they just free played until I was done. They understood the importance and remembered from last season to not interrupt mommy. Usually this required a 5am rise (I was pretty good about early bedtimes).

Long runs on Saturdays--I had an awesome baby sitter who came to my home and watched the girls so that I could leave anywhere between 5:15am and 6:30am to meet my team for group runs. I even worked it out so I could go to breakfast with everyone for a little grown up time :).

Also--my training schedule was prepared for me. I only switched to MFM when I was having knee issues and then just finished up with it as it was easier on the body.

Towards the end I joined a gym with an excellent child care program :goodvibes .

I had a friend going through a nasty divorce who is still a SAHM to 5 kids (has a baby right now) so I had her do my baby sitting when I went to PT.

Tired yet?

I'd like to say it wasn't that hard--but towards the end I did have a meltdown on the phone with hubby which resulted in him hiring me a housekeeper. I was ready to flush my home down the toilet it was so bad. Homeschooling (oh--did I forget that part? :hyper: ) fell to the wayside! So stuff did suffer for the sport.

Now I'm doing okay--we are doing the gym thing (wish I had it all along last season), not using the housekeeper (come to find out I just didn't know what I was doing--seriously--copied everything she did and now it is my routine--the exact order they cleaned my home. And man is it EFFICIENT!!!), and homeschooling is soo back on track.

People say I'm organized--and I say I only *look* organized...and it seemed very much so last season.

I have some minimal New Years resolutions to reduce stress and hopefully we'll have a better (and injury free) 2006.

How's Howard doing?
