Wk of Jan 14--WISH Walking/Running Club

And, enough of that butt whipping talk. We were all out there giving 100%. What's Christa's siggy say? "We're all winners, some just finish before others" (or something like that).

Hi Everyone!
Just in case you hear this rumor that I am claiming to have won the marathon -two quick stories:

As our TNT team got off the plane in Atlanta, one of our mentors asked us to wear our medals. So we are walking down the concourse to baggae claim and some guy yells out "did your team win?" Without any consulting or planning the group of us yell back "YES!"

I teach sunday school to 2nd grade girls. My partner had them pray for me on Marathon Sunday and explained where I was and what I was doing. So this Sunday I brought in my medal to show the girls. They loved it! They were horrified to hear that I was giving it away. However they seemed to misunderstand what the medal was for because more than one parent came up to me later to congratulate me on "winning" the WDW marathon!

So, my 10 year old daughter is standing beside me when this happens for the 3rd or 4th time and she rolls her eyes and looks at the dad and says "She didn't win it -It took her almost 5 hours - they gave everyone a medal." (I can't wait until she is actually a teenager...) By the way, at least that dad was properly impressed that I had finished.

Ahhh, humility! Paul wore his Half shirt home and people we're constantly congratulating him. I wanted to yell out "hey, I ran BOTH" but I didn't:angel:

When we got home Paul immediately asked DS if he wanted to see his medal. As he showed it to him I chimed in "Daddy beat me big time!". I wanted so badly to say, "want to see my THREE medals?" but I refrained:angel: . I waited a few days before I showed him my medals.

Ok, so I am never going to catch up here!

Steve - I am sending our lovely 10 degrees (before wind chill) & ice storm to you! ;) My parents haven't had power for 36 hours. Thank goodness they closed on the 'new' house down the street from me last Friday. They have slept there for 2 nights on my Aerobed. Our they would have had to come to my house! :scared1:

Cam - how are those feet doing? Also, we were thinking about you guys as we drove through DE Sunday afternoon! My friend Kristi lives off exit 9 in PA. I will probably be down that way this year more than in the past. She asked me to be her matron of honor! Another reason to stick to WW! Also, let me know if you decide to do a structured class & how it goes. I've been toying with the idea also. And, I also keep forgetting to ask what kind of law you practice! Kristi was asking me and I had no idea.

Dave
- in 2005, Chad & I went to WDW alone for the race weekend. We had a great time. Of course, Zack was only 18 mos. old & had no clue where we were going (or that we were gone). I think child-less trips are very important! ;)

Jodi - great pics! And great job!

Oh gosh, I know there were more comments I wanted to make, but they have left my head at this point.

We did a story this morning about ERs filling up with people with the stomach virus thing. I guess it really wasn't just me!

I decided to order a new pair of running shoes now while I can. Don't you know they discontinued them? Argh! I know the new version is probably ok. I am going to call roadrunnersports and see if they have any hiding somewhere...

Oh and one more thing! I just want to explain to all of you why I wasn't the big cheerleader I promised to be during the Full. After the Half - that evening - my legs started killing me. I have always had circulation issues. Usually if a do alot of standing, my fluid in my legs gets trapped below the knee and my calves swell up huge. It can be uncomfortable to painful. This has never been a problem with walking/running. So, I went to our chairty dinner in pain, popping Advil. I even was rude enough to eat dinner with my feet propped up on the chair beside me. We left and I kept feet up enough as possible. Mom & Chad wanted to rest, so since I felt better, I took Zack to MK for a few hours Saturday night. Legs were hurting again by the time we left MK.

Sunday morning got up to much better legs. Having them 'up' while sleep does do wonders. I begin my trek to track down Chad near MK. I realize I am late, and go to AK to see him. I see him twice there and head to MGM. I was going to head right to the Boardwalk, but Chad was having a hard time. I felt bad & thought it would be a better wifey-thing to do, to find him again & help him along. By the time I get to MGM, I am in pain again. I manage my way back to NY street and plop down on a bench. I sit there until he goes by with my feet up on the bench. I felt so terrible, I really couldn't cheer. I felt like a jerk sitting there watching people go by & not cheering. :sad2: I then walk/run with Chad through MGM a bit. He goes on & I go to the boat to MGM.

I get off at the Swan and make my way past Mel, Karen & Judy on the Boardwalk. Again, my originally intention was to stay somewhere in that area too, but my legs were killing me & I wasn't feeling so good about how Chad was feeling during the race. I decided I would walk thru Epcot to the front, along the race route to make sure I saw any WISHers. I get all the way to the front of Epcot & I am in so much pain, I can't talk, let alone cheer. Chad has finished before I get out the front gates. I plop myself on the first bench I find & Chad has to come find me! :rotfl: We sat around for about an hour. I finally felt up to walking back (car parked at BWV). We very slowly walked back thru Epcot the long way, along the race course. I stopped a couple times to put my feet up. Finally, in China I had to sit & we were hungry! Chad got us take out from China and we sat on the bench eating. I wanted to be sure to see Cam & Rhonda! Low & behold, they came by! :cheer2: I jump up, ran to see them, took pics...then went right back to my bench. We saw the last runner go by. After awhile, we walked all the way back through to the van, stopping at benches along the way.

Sorry that was so long. I juts felt bad about talking about how I would cheer everyone on, and then I didn't. :sad2: I got all the txt messages & loved it though! Next year I will be a better 'full cheerleader,' I promise! :cheer2:

I wonder how many people have done/will do all 3 Goofy Challenges.

Chad has done them both, and I am mailing his registration today for '08. He plans on doing it every year. (me & my big mouth!)

Also, take care of that IT band! Chad really did a job on his after his first marathon in 2002. He was in physical therapy for months and had to bail out of the Boston Marathon! He had a voucher to run from a friend that year, and could not use it (he will never be fast enough to qualify)! Now, that sucked big time. And we haven't been able to beg another voucher off anyone again.

Sunny
- take care of that vertigo! I had issues with that a couple years ago, on & off for a year or so. Never figured out why i had it. I think it was a sodium imbalance from eating way too many frozen weight watcher meals. I have since cut those down to almost never and I haven't had another episode.

Oh my gosh, I can't believe I almost forgot to tell you guys, the FUNNIEST thing happened last night. I had my medal sitting on the dresser, I moved it when I was getting ready for bed, to put it up until we do our shadow box. Hines heard the clinking, so he came over to investigate. I let him sniff the medal and the ribbon and then I put the medal on him. He totally FREAKED out!!! He started running around in circles and pawing at the medal while it clanked around his neck. When Stephen and I could catch our breath from laughing, we took the medal off him; for the next few minutes Hines stood there shaking and looking at us like "I can't believe you did that to me". :dog:
Ha, ha, ha...:lmao: Too funny. Krista, was it you that posted the great shadowboxes you made for your medals last year? If so, could you post them again? I'd love to see how you did it, and get ideas to make mine.

Kristi--Do you know what kinds of stretches/weight lifting Chad did for his IT band? Has he had any trouble since 2002? I'm trying to heal mine on my own before I do the physical therapy route.

Cecilia--One of the ladies at work asked if I won the marathon and I said yes. :rotfl: Stephen and I teach 2nd grade girls Sunday School too.

Sunny--Too funny about Paul!!!! When people were congratulating my Dad on the half, I wanted to yell, "but I did the full!!!"

Dave--2006 Marathon Shadowbox. I guess we will have to do 2 shadowboxes this year since Stephen will need a whole one to himself.

Thanks Krista: Can I ask some details? Where'd you get the frame, and what did you mount your medals on?

Morning All,

I want to thank everyone for the warm welcomes I received, but it seems I can't keep up with ya'll -- either on the road nor on the computer. This is a talkative group.

I also wanted to thank everyone for their advice and for giving me permission to start out slow. I would've started pushing myself and would've ended up hurt for sure. Now, I know that it is okay to jog for, say, 30 sec and walk for several minutes. My MFM should arrive soon, and I heard all of you and will NOT be loaning it out.

I have been getting up every morning and doing 30 minutes on the elliptical. I know it isn't optimal, but it is what I have and something is better than nothing. I have also taken a couple of 1 mile walks with my dd(7). Those are slow though because she literally does take time to stop and smell the roses.

This morning was my first solo mile. While I wish the time (15:14) was better, I am optimistic and looking at it as a good thing. I looking at is a good benchmark to see where I am now and what I need to do to get where I want to be. All the talk of that special Mickey medal had me wondering if I should try for the full in '08. Now, I know that the 1/2 is where I need to be, and I'm sure there will be some special bling for the 20th and/or 25th anniversary. (See, I'm thinking long term.) I think I'm going to continue working on my elliptical because it will help me get stronger and lose weight, and that will help with my training. I'm also thinking (and here is where I'm guessing. It is all subject to change after getting my book and hearing what ya'll think) that I will continue to hit the pavement 2 or 3 times a week for a few weeks. When I'm more comfortable walking/jogging, I will increase the number of times I get out. Also, should I set my goal first for time or distance? In other words, should I continue doing just 1 mile, until I can comfortably do it in, say 12 (or whatever I decide I want to make my goal) minutes and then increase distance? Or since I'm doing the Minnie 5K, do that distance but keep working on time? I know this is probably a silly question, but like I said before I am a complete newbie at this.

Finally, I want to thank all of you for the inspiration ya'll have provided. Wow!!! A year ago I would've said I had a better chance of hitting the lottery (very hard when you don't even buy the tickets) than completing a marathon. Now, I know I can do this. So, Donald '08 and then Mickey '09. :yay:

Have a great day everyone.

Krista that is awesome I love it. Do they put your name and area that you live in on it or did you do that yourself?

Kim

Good morning Team, and may I just say? BRRRRRR! :cold: Well, at least in these sub-zero temps we don't have all that mud.

Today was a rest day. :upsidedow

Charlie has taken my MfM and is studying it like he's got a test to pass. Now, I have no idea what brought THIS on. :lmao:

Laurie - Ha! I told you that place was dangerous! We went in there to buy Charlie some shorts and came out $400.00 later!

Christa - The Little Red Hen - How cuuuute! :cutie:

Kevin - YAY! I am so glad you are back. :hyper: Now don't you leave us again, got it? Otherwise we'll send Carrie after you!

Lynnda - Glad to hear the littlest WISHer is doing great. :goodvibes

Jodi - Yay! There's Jodi! :yay: What great pictures! Oh I'm sorry you got a cold, I was popping Airbone Gummis for a week before we left and drinking the fizzy Airborne every night. I didn't get sick so maybe that stuff really works.

Dave - I was thinking about something this morning......You were really REALLY fast in the marathon! :worship: Knowing you from when you started with us, and all that you went thru, I have to say I am WAY impressed by your time. Man, you really booked! :woohoo:

Krista! Poor poor Hines! Poor dog... (but I'm secretly snickering.) :rotfl:

Cecilia - Great stories! :goodvibes As we were boarding the plane to come home some lady said "Oh look! She must have won!" Umm, yeah, OK suuure, lady.

Kristi - Oh my! I hope you are OK now.

OK let me actually do some work so I can start paying for our 2008 Half Trip.

Krista-- your box is great:thumbsup2

As if we don't have enough WISH stuff in the making, I just put in a request for a customized tyvek bib order. It looks like typical numbered bibs with a logo run about 75-90 cents per bib with a $45 setup fee. I was thinking, in case of inclement weather, where layers are needed, etc., we could get cheap WISH bibs to wear on our backs, why not? I'll let you know what I hear. My idea is to have the WISH front logo on the bib, no numbers of course. If its cheap, I'll ask who's interested.

Kristi-- yikes, I hope your parents are warm. It's 8 with wind chill -8 here now. Whatever happened to "baby steps" into winter?

Sunny

Dave--We bought the shadowbox at Michael's. I think it was around $100 for the big one. As far as the medals, we used black card stock to make boxes and attached our pictures to them, we folded the ribbon up under the picture cube to make the medals hang down below. Yes, I'm married to Martha Stewart. :)

Kim--Disney will put your name on your racing bib. Whatever name you have on your registration is what they will use, so if you put Kimberly, then that will be on your bib and you'll hear "GO KIMBERLY" a million times during the marathon. I can't tell you how encouraging that is!!

Eva--You are doing awesome!!!! Definitely start slow and take your time. Don't worry about time right now, speed will come. Keep on doing the elliptical, it's a great machine and you are getting a great workout. When I hurt my IT band on my 20-miler in December, I finished up my last 3 weeks of training on the elliptical and endurance wise and aerobically wise I was fine in the marathon and didn't have any problems with that. Injury wise and weather wise is a different story. ;) You have almost 4 months to train for the Minnie 5K, you will so be ready!!!!! And don't worry about missing out on the 15th anniversary marathon medal, I'm sure the 20th anniversary one will be even better. ;)

Krista – I am glad you are taking it easy and letting your IT band heal! And poor Hines – what a sweet baby. I hope he is over the trauma!

Kristi – We would have loved for you guys to detour the 2 very short miles off I-95 to visit. Oh, and I practice corporate law on th e shareholder side. We file class and derivative actions against corporate officers and directors who breach their fiduciary duties to shareholders in connection with corporate mismanagement or in the context of corporate transactions where we believe the Board isn’t acting in the best interests of the shareholders.

On discontinued shoes – I found mine long after they were gone everywhere else at zappos.com You may want to check there. I was thrilled with their inventory and their price and free shipping both directions (if you have to return something)

BTW, if any of the WISH team is every traveling on 95 south of Philadelphia, PLEASE come visit! We miss everyone!

Thanks to everyone who asked about my feet. They are definitely better and I am heading for the treadmill tonight. I am really hoping to be able to pick up where I left off on building my running times. Back in late October and early November, I had worked my way up to jogging for 4 minutes at a 12 minute pace and was loving it, but had to drop back considerably to build distance and endurance. So, I am going to work on building up to jogging intervals again for extended distances. I plan to be in great shape, time-wise, by the time the Minnie comes around.

Jodi – congrats on signing up for your next marathon. Isn’t it great to have a goal in mind? I bet you are going to be sooo awesome when you aren’t worn out from doing a ½ the day before a full. :woohoo:

Sunny – you are such a sweetie for allowing Paul to bask in the glory before showing DS your medals.

Cecilia – your stories are fun! I really do have to agree with Christa’s saying in her siggie – we are all winners. Some just finish faster. Or something like that.

Krista – awesome shadow box!

Eva – your commitment and pace are already very impressive. You are going to be in such great shape to train when it is time to turn to a very scheduled pre-race training plan. I really admire you for making the time to do the elliptical. That is great!

Oooo, Sunny is designing more WISH stuff. Have I told anyone here just HOW MUCH stuff I have bought on cafepress and the fact that I have every WISH item ever offered for sale here? Geez, I really am an addict.

That reminds me – I bought an oval window sticker for my car that says 26.2 and one of my goals was to finish the full so that I could put that on my car. I am so excited about putting it on and seeing it every day. :yay:

Geez, I’d better post this before I miss anymore posts, and so I can get back to work. Oh, and in the next few hours I hope to post all my WISHers pix from the ½ on the thread I started yesterday.

To those that can't do Minnie 07 or marathon 08, :grouphug: :grouphug: and :wizard: for a miracle. I was so depressed that I coul dnot do MInnie last year or DL. PLus, before 06 marahthon, I never thought dh would agree to 07. Hang in there and hope fo some Disney magic! WIsh we could take all our WISH friends everywhere with us!

...I teach physical education so I am running around all day with my students...
I think you get plenty of training!

...You know, one of these days I need to get back in the swing of training, I haven't done a single thing since the marathon...I guess I can always say that I'm just resting my It band. Yeah, that's what I'm doing, resting my IT band. ;) I have gone back to eating healthy again (I don't have a choice now that I'm not running a gazillion miles a week right now), I'm trying to lose about 10 lb before the Flying Pig half in May. I've been keeping my calories around 1200-1300 and it's SO hard!! I've forgotten how miserable it is to actually pay attention to caloric and fat in take.
Krista, I'm exactly with you on this. Sigh... Cute Hines story.

I'm drafting on the rest of what everyone has said to everyone, yeah, what they said!

Kristi, I’m so sorry to hear of that pain you were in during race weekend. I hope things improve.

Eva, you are doing great! In answer to your question about doing speed or distance first the answer is that a combination is what will allow you to go farther and faster. Most plans call for timed training/hill work/spped work/cross trainig combinations (not all at once) during the week and longer slower distances on the weekends with small incremental increases as your body will adjust in smaller doses. You're doing great with what you've started for yourself.

Cam, glad you've got your pics up! They are great!

Haven't done anything physical yet. I still feel the knee twitching some, but it is definitely settled down a lot.

Morning all - not much to report for me, managed day one of 'foot rest' okay. I did 40 minutes on the exercise bike when I would normally run with the running club - then went down there are drank beer with them all anyway. Running buddy is rumoured to be trying to find her way to our little board so she can see what I've said about her, so just in case she does - HI ARIAN!!

I'm getting a little concerned about the faces of other runners when I explain the Goofy - the words 'you're mad' have been uttered more than once, and they don't seem to understand the lure of the shiny goofy head!!

Anyway, that's it for me - I had 30 minutes until my next interview when I came on here, and I've just realised I know have 30 seconds. I'm off to discuss bones with someone... Helen
