Wk of Feb 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Well, I was beat after my meeting last night. I never got the second wind I thought I would. I went home and snuggled with DW and watched Survivor. It was a nice night, and I'm planning to get a walk in today.

Jodi - Cool about the running club. I'm planning on joining one myself that has a beginning running program starting in March. Let me know how yours goes.

Lily - You did send the snow this way!!! Thanks a lot. Oh well, can't complain - it's been such a mild winter this year.

Helen - Tokyo DL! Cool! That would be something to see. Do they have a marathon too?

Have a great day everyone.

Hey all you runners/walkers....I'm popping in here to join your thread :thumbsup2 .

Two of my inspirations for training for the Jan. 07 Half are Carrie and Mel (Chimera). I've just begun my official training using a mixture of Galloway and Bingham training plans!!! I love those guys!! I've been pretty athletic my whole life BUT I've never been a runner. I've always wanted to, though and I've had dreams of doing an endurance event ever since my Dad was training for Iron Man when I was just a little girl. He never did make it to Iron Man due to hip problems that eventually led to his need for a hip replacement....but I can't wait to see the look in his eyes when I tell him I'm doing a marathon (or half). I haven't broken the news yet. :cheer2:

You are all such wonderful inspirations after lurking here for a few days. I feel kind of funny jumping into your thread but I need a place to come and ask my multitudes of questions and since I'm running pretty much alone for this training, I love the idea of a virtual running club!

As Carrie and Mel know....I've purchased my ridiculously expensive sneakers, my cold weather running apparel and tons of books! I did my first official training run on Tuesday....a 5 min. warm-up walk and a 20 min. run. I went 2 miles on that day. I ran again on Thursday for the same amount of time and felt pretty great when I was finished. My XT is currently 3 days/week of an intense Cardio-Kickboxing class which I've been doing for 5 months now. I firmly believe that class has given me two great things. First is the strength and endurance I needed to get out there and run 2 miles the other day without stopping (haven't done that since I was in HS) and secondly it's given me a confidence I haven't had in years.

I'm sorry to ramble but since I'm jumping into this wonderful WISH community, I felt it was probably a good idea to give you an idea of who I am :teeth: . I'm a mommy of two, 37 years old and looking to do what I have always felt was impossible for ME until NOW. RUN an endurance event! :woohoo:

I've got one question for all of you now. It's supposed to snow on Sunday....my LR day. Which at this time is only 2 miles but we're expecting a foot of snow up here. So now I am thinking that I should do my LR tomorrow...even though that means I won't have had a rest day since Sunday. Is that pushing it? Or do you think since it's a short distance I should be a-okay! TIA for your help! And sorry for the ramble!!

Ah, Dave, what a sweetie you are! Rest days are good and required!! Great job on your increase distance.

Tiff, I had to laugh at your SAHM bunko comment! Everyone here wants to play bunko, I get invited to a another group every couple of months. Just can't play that game, I go occasionally, but only for a glass of wine! :drinking1 :yay:

Sunny, I am not really upset about my toenail (or lack thereof), I was really mad at myself thinking I could have prevented it somehow. I now know that it comes with the territory. That is why I love this group, we are all going through the same experiences and learn so much from each other! :grouphug:

MelR, can't wait to hear about the new treadmill.
bike.gif

MelR, imagine this guy on a treadmill...I need to find of these guys running on a treadmill. Funny I have treadmill on the brain, since the marathon, I have no desire to run outside, almost all my miles have been indoors.

Heather, wow, you are sure biking a lot. Do you have great trails?

Jodi, 12 pounds lost :woohoo: . You look so tiny in your picture. I can't imagine you have much more to lose. Congratulations.

:dancer:

AmyBeth welcome! :wave2:

Wow, you are doing great! Two miles on your FIRST run!! That is awesome. You are doing all the right things. Stop by often and ask lots of questions.

We are glad you are here!

Hi guys! It's so hard to keep up with you guys!! Work has been crazy. I've been checking in to read but have not posted in a while.

I'm really intrigued by all the talk of bikes and trailing running. I've been taking a spinning class at the gym. I would really like to move the cycling outdoors. Does any one have any advice for a novice? I don't know anything and don't have anything. I do know that I'll probably want to stick to the road, to begin with anyway. I also read one of John Bingham's books this weekend where he was writing about trail running. It intrigued me as well. Anything special I need to know before attempting to trail run? He mentioned trail shoes. What's the difference from regular running shoes? :confused3

Ok...I'll stop with all the questions...work is calling. I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday. Happy training!!

Amy - :welcome: Welcome to the thread Amy! Great to have you here. I just joined up a couple of weeks ago, and found this to be a wonderful supportive group. Sounds like we are at the same stage of our running (and life). I'm 38 and a father of 2 princesses princess: princess: . I used to run regularly before my oldest daughter was born (now 8), and I'm trying to get back into it. I've always wanted to run a marathon, and through the support of this group I think I can do it this year. I'm shooting for the next WDW marathon (but I haven't signed up yet). I also am using a mix of Galloway and Brigham. I have an old Jeff Galloway book from a former time I was running about 10 years ago. I too am up to around 2 - 2.5 miles, but I'm just walking right now. I plan on mixing in some running starting in March. Anyhow, again, welcome - post often, and I'll see you in Orlando.

Good morning everybody!!!! I'm back!!! Did you miss me??!! :teeth: (Did you even know I was gone? :guilty: ) So I ran last night for the first time in almost 3 weeks, I figured since I have a half marathon in 12 weeks, I better get going. I ran 3 miles on the treadmill, I am SO mad at myself for losing muscle and fitness! :furious: The run wasn't hard, but it wasn't effortless like it used to be either. Oh well, I think I'll be fine for the Country Music Half, I just have to remind myself after that half to keep up with my running!

Welcome to all the new people who aren't quite so new anymore! :wave2: :teeth: I'm glad to see our little group is growing!

There's too much going on that I can't remember everything and if I did address everyone, I think this might turn into a novel! There were a couple that stuck out to me though. And from now on, I promise that I will be more diligent about posting (I'm making a lot of promises today, like for example to slow down since I got my first ticket this morning on my way to work :moped: ).

Cam-- :woohoo: :woohoo: for your daughter!! That is great that she was accepted at West Chester U. My sister is doing her student teaching right now, education is a tough field, but a very, very rewarding one.

Carrie-- pixiedust: for your foot and :cheer2: that you found a doctor that runs.

AmyBeth--Welcome! I'm certainly not an expert, but personally I would rest today and run my 2 miles tomorrow--you don't want to run in the snow or ice and risk an injury. Hope that helps!!

Oh, and I need to ask for some pixiedust: for Stephen. More knee issues, he did something to his knee during the marathon, it was bothering him immediately after the marathon, and so he iced it and took ibuprofen. He took off a week and a half off, ran about a mile and the knee acted up again, last night Stephen ran after taking 3 weeks off and made it about 2 1/2 miles before his knee started hurting. I think he may need to go back to the doctor and see if there is a more serious issue. I've been telling him he honestly has 10 months until the marathon, yes we're planning to run a half the end of April, but we don't HAVE to run that. He just needs to get himself well for Goofy. But we all know how men are :rolleyes2 (no offense, Dave ;) )

I better get off here, I was a little late this morning because of my run-in with the law, which ironically was why I was speeding--to get to work on time! I'll check in later, happy training!!

Krista - of course we missed you!!!!! Who do you think we thought about last sunday??????? I honestly think all distance runs are not effortless!!! I dont care if it is 3 miles or 30, I'm always tired at some point!!

Dave - I need permission to have my lazy day today!!!! I mt. biked and ran yesterday and mt. biked on tues, but that is all i have done this week (needed a few days of recovery from the 31.7 - or whatever- miles) I'm just feeling tired today, but i'm planning on doing 10 tomorrow (tapering for a marathon on feb 25)

Amy - welcome!!! so glad you are here. Great job w/ your 2 miles. You should probably be find to get your miles in early (if you feel tired, just take it slow. You'll still get them time on your feet in that way!!)

Collen - I CANNOT PLAY BUNKO!!!! When I went, it was a church gp, and they wouldn't even talk about wine :guilty:

Tiff - when you pick up your bike, get them to give you whatever freebies come w/ it, like a water bottle and/or drink cage. Also, you are spending lots of $$$ there, so you can probably convince them to show you how to change the flat and put the chain back on b/4 you leave the shop (you will want to get a little seat bag w/ a spare tire and tools anyway, so they should show you how to use them) You will have flats so it is a good idea to know how to fix it. better to learn now than in the middle of a race, or worse, to have to walk your bike w/ flat tire though the bike leg!!! Have fun w/ you bike this weekend, biker SAHM :sunny:

The boy is yelling "Momma, come on, make your coffee!!" b/c I told him i would go sit with him downstairs and play after i made my coffee, so I'd better go!!!!

Happy Friday Everyone!!!!!!!!!

First off before anything else I have to SHOUT OUT "THANK YOU" to all of you that have supported me this week. I have been so down due to the pain and lack of improvement this week and coming here and feeling the :wizard: has helped more than I can possibly express  :grouphug:

I had my 1st water therapy appointment yesterday and to be honest I really don't think it did anything. The stuff he wanted me to do hurt too much and the stuff we did do wasn't much. I'm very doubtful on it as this point :confused3

I did call my original DR and ask for a referral for a 2nd opinion. I have an apt on 2/20 and will insist on the MRI that the PT tells me I need to have. As he has a new open MRI machine in his office I have no doubt at all that he will have any problem ordering one. Gotta pay for the million dollar machine you know :lmao:

Amy - :welcome: You've found a great group!

Krista - Of course you were missed!!!!!! I'm so happy that you found the time to post :yay: Slow down though :moped: :rotfl2:

Chropistopy I dont know a thing about bikes. But I'm sure someone will be along to help you. There is a new tri club that just started in my area. I've got crazy thoughts going through my head if I ever get better

Gotta go hope to post more later!!!

TGIF everyone and happy training

::MinnieMo

OK, i forgot one thing. Christy, my trail shoes drian well (in case of h2o crossings) I have a pair of waterproof ones, but they are too hot and if the water gets in you can't get it back out. they also, i think are a little stiffer and sturdier. I think they are built a little different to help w/ being stable on rugged terrain and the sole is a little grippier. I don't think it is any big deal to do an occasional trail w/ normal shoes. i did a 21 mile trail run in my cumulus gels!! :sunny: If you like to get dirty, you might get a mt. bike, then you'd be all set up for dirty triathlons!!! (you'll have to ask lynn all about that!!) or maybe adventure race (we all know how i feel about those!!)

Now he is saying "mom, close your computer!!"

Good Morning,

I started working 12 hour shifts this week at the hospital and worked the last two days. I can't believe how many pages of threads I missed! Wow, so much talking. :sunny: I had to put on a Barney DVD for my boys so I could get caught up. :teeth:

MelR - I am with you on the coffee. I have 3 cup to start my day and that is just my morning dose of coffee. I usually brew a pot in the afternoon too!

Anyway, due to the last two days at work, my training schedule is way off. I did some weights at home last Tuesday, rest day Wed, and missed yesterdays r/w. Today I will get some weights in at home and am waiting for my new yoga DVD to arrive so that I can start that on my Xtraining days. Tomorrow will be my LR/W. I am up 7 intervals of 4/2.

Pace - I seem to be at a 13.5 min pace. Listening to all of you, I realize I am pretty slow. BUT, I am enjoying myself and meeting my goals. Oh, and my knees don't ache if I take the time to stretch enough!

Thoughts on free sport & WISHers: Being a nurse, I have always had good shoes, so not a big deal. I have a free membership to a great workout facility/wellness center at the hospital I work at. However, I have now bought underarmour cold gear for running outside, running pants, socks, & top from target for my indoor runs. Not to mention the registration fees for the 3 events this year, plus the cost of a trip to Disney in Jan. I am daily telling myself that I don't NEED the Garmin and a TM is not necessary! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Off to spend some time with my boys. I haven't seen them in 2 days!
Maggie :surfweb:

Maggie - your pace is great. keep up the good work (for future reference, when i get into the longer runs, i use an occasional gel w/ caffiene to give me my mocha pleasure during the hours of misery) :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Happy Morning Everyone!

I'm all packed and ready to leave for the Suncoast Classic 5k in St. Petersburg! I still can't believe we are making a 4 hour drive to go run. Wow! This exercise stuff has sure changed my life. A year ago I would have thought this was completely insane! :rotfl2:

Judy- Thanks for your encouragement about being able to do 1/2. I drew off of your positive attitude this week when I didn't feel like getting my butt off the couch and exercising. Thanks!

Tiff- I still can't believe there were lots of people over 200lbs there. Yay! I feel so much better. Thanks for the info. I'm starting to feel like I really can do this! :cool1:

See you all when I get back. I added the link to my dh's journal under my profile if anyone wants to check it out. It has pics from our first 5k in one of the entries. I was scared to death!!!

Have a fun weekend. Get out and enjoy moving those bodies!

DENA

Good morning all. No wildlife stories today. paw:

I overslept and didn't even wake up until 5:20am. At first I said well, guess I can't do the TM now, so I went back to bed. :sad2: Then I was laying there and I said if I really wanted to do this I still have time. So, I did! I find this amazing. It's so not like me. :thumbsup2

Since I am in the beginning stages of Lupus, I have to have bloodwork done every six months. My doctor has been watching my ANA count for the last four years. It has been staying level but increased a year or so ago. Only slightly though. At any rate, this past week I had it done again and guess what...It went DOWN! She said "I don't know what you're doing but keep it up". OMG can you believe it!?? :yay: I attribute it all to training. See what you've done Cam? :teeth:

I switched to my new pair of New Balance 609s this morning. I'm such a dope. I should have done this a while ago. I don't know what the heck I was saving them for. My knees don't hurt at all today. :woohoo:

Dave - Oh Dave, surely you jest! Me?? An athlete? :lmao: Hardly! But gee thanks! Hey keep us posted on the grant.

Mel - Way to go on the jogging! :cheer2: And so nice that it's around WDW. That can't hurt! Yeah for slaying the dragons! :woohoo:

Cam - OMG Jenn! :cheer2:  :Pinkbounc :yay: :cool1:

Sunny - Ohhh I'm scared of the taper. :scared: Even reading about you all tapering before the Disney race made me nervous. :scared1: I'm so AMAZED that I am even doing this that I'm REALLY afraid to stop. Although I know how important tapering is and I WILL DO IT. But we must have a taper support group start about two weeks before the Half. :rolleyes1

Melissa - Congratulations on the TM. :cheer2: I am at 1%, but I am just a beginner.

Tiff - Thanks for asking about my "new addition". I am signing the last of the paperwork today and depending on what the stupid storm does tomorrow, I may get her either tomorrow morning or Sunday. Whooo hoooo!

AmyBeth
- Welcome! :welcome: You're off to an excellent start!

Krista - I just figured you were in Detroit all this time... :lmao:

Minnie - Good idea, got get that MRI. Let's see what is shows. :wizard:

Dena - Oh I'm so touched by what you said. To think that I inspired someone....oh my goodness....

OK let me - like Sunny - pretend to work. No green light for me! (Yeah OK. Is mine EVER NOT green???)

Judy

Hello, just a quickie for me.

First, Krista! Of course we've missed you and noticed you weren't here. Just as MelR said, you were the first person I thought of when the game ended!!!!!

I went to the Y last night and did mega weights and rowing. I thought I had my gym bag with me but I didn't. So I did my workout in a T-shirt and jeans  Quite gross actually, but once I drove there, I wasn't about to leave without a workout.

I also signed up for swimming lessons  I'm psyched. That should be teh push I needed to get into the pool.

Sunny

Thank you all soooo much for the warm welcome :grouphug: .

I did get my 70 minutes in of k-boxing today. It was a crazy insane class...the hardest I think we've ever done. But I feel great right now!

With that said....I don't think I should run tomorrow unless I wake up feeling especially good! I need those things you can put on your shoes to run in the snow....we're in for a doozy snow storm and I've just got to get out there on Sunday. Or maybe I can go to my friend's house and use her tm? That's an option!

Anyway...Sunny, I'd love to start swimming! :thumbsup2

Dave, sounds like we're charting the same course! It's great to have partners in this amazing journey! :goodvibes

Minnie...I've been following this thread for a while now and I think an MRI is definitely the way to go. So sorry to hear you're still in pain :sad2: . Loads of pixie dust coming your way!!!

And again to everyone.....THANK YOU so much for the words of encouragement and putting your inspiring stories on the WISH board to help motivate us! You are all my hero! :worship:

OK, everyone..I've registered for the DL half with my DH!! :scared1: It turns out that he has an aunt who lives nearby with whom I had already spoken to about the possiblity of coming for the DL half. I originally called her for hotel suggestions, but she said "Stay here!" That was great and all, but I had no idea where she was in relation to DL. I MapQuested it yesterday..she lives 8 miles away!! :cool1: I know that's not the parking lot..but, hey!! So, after due consideration...I just HAD to sign up! Now to just get to that 15 minute training pace..siiiggghhh. I am a WALKER..so, Maggie, only if you are a runner is 13.5 slow to me!

I also signed up for my very first official 5K on March 5. :jumping1:
Thanks to everyone for the sock help!! :thanks:

Cam - Yahooo for your daughter getting into West Chester U!!! That's fantastic, and must be a big load off your mind to know that one's in the bag.

Krista - Hey, whadduya mean, we know how men are? :confused3 You must be referring to warm, supportive, loving, people who may just be a teeny bit dense and stubborn at times? Good thing you have that picture of Hines Ward in your signature.

MelR - Laziness permission granted. pixiedust: You were really supportive of me taking a day off yesterday, and it was nice just to be able to go home after my meeting and not worry about it. Rest today. You've done a ton lately.

Minnie - Oh that's too bad the water therapy didn't help too much. Know we're thinking of you and pulling for you. I hope you get some real relief soon.

Maggie - wow, those 12 hour days sound absolutely grueling. Your 13.5 min pace sounds great! You're faster than me right now. Good for you for being happy with what you can do.

Dena - Good luck with the 5k. Can't wait to hear the report.

Judy - I'm really sorry to hear about your lupus. I hope everything stays undercontrol. I have some family members myself with autoimmune diseases. Great job with the training though. Mind over body, right?

OK, here's my training update for today. Walked for 1 mile on the treadmill at 14:30 pace before my yoga class. Contorted myself into all kinds of unnatural positions named for some reason after animals (I've never seen a cow do anything like the pose we did) for an hour. Then walked another mile on the treadmill at 14:30 pace.
