Wk of Feb 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Amy, where in Nj do you live? I am in monmouth county just down the road from Long Branch, but I have relatives throughout the state.

Dena - Awesome race pictures. I felt the same way at my 1st 5k!!!! I had an old lady run up behind me near the end of the race. She asked me if i was ok before she ran past me. she told me i was looking a little wobbly and then she took off and beat me down!!! It made me so mad, but now i have the story to remember. if i could have seen anything but spots due to oxygen deprevation, i would have remembered what she looked like so i could beat her the next year, but it was not meant to be.

sunny - if i were there, i would give you the "little shove you need to get you into the pool" :rotfl2: Hey, what are friends for?

Dave - thanks!! Phil is on call tomorrow, so i may try to do a 10 miler on the tm while the boy watches sat am cartoons????

maharae - congrats and awesome!!!!!!

Judy - glad to hear that your test results were better. that is really wonderful

cam- are they making you work today???? where are you??????

need nap!!!!!!! may take one!!!!!!

Hey MelR, take a nap for me too please.

Minnie, I am so sorry to hear that you are struggling. I hope that this can all be fixed soon. PD that there is a diagnosis soon to allow for the correction and healing that you need.

Dena, I look forward to your report on the 5k. Have fun!

Pace - I seem to be at a 13.5 min pace. Listening to all of you, I realize I am pretty slow. BUT, I am enjoying myself and meeting my goals. Oh, and my knees don't ache if I take the time to stretch enough!

Thoughts on free sport & WISHers: …I am daily telling myself that I don't NEED the Garmin and a TM is not necessary! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
Maggie, YES you do need a Garmin and TM! You will be amazed that you did without once you have acquired these toys er I mean “tools.” (I hate my TM, but was grateful I had it when I did the 22 mi. LR indoors instead of the slippery snow.) Garmin is the BEST toy I own!

Dave and AmyBeth, Sign up! You are currently at a speed that I think would carry you through the full. Remember, you have 7 hours to complete the full. You don’t have to be in first place. It is ok to take 7 hours. I trained to do 7 hours and managed a pace to clear my full in 6 ½ hours. I didn’t over do and I had the most fantastic time!

Anyone else need the nudge? You can do this and it is early enough in the training that you can complete whatever you choose. I registered last year for both races thinking I would do the one I felt most trained to do and whaddya know…the rest is now history. (Actually, I hoped I’d be doing the full but DS caused me to register down to the half b/c I wanted to run with him. I wanted that full so bad I worked for it.) Don’t over train, just train and XT. Build your base now and put in those steps too.

Commit to the registration. It is part of the journey. The roller coaster ride will really begin when you make that commitment. Take the full experience.

Good Morning,

I started working 12 hour shifts this week at the hospital and worked the last two days. I can't believe how many pages of threads I missed! Wow, so much talking. :sunny: I had to put on a Barney DVD for my boys so I could get caught up. :teeth:

Thoughts on free sport & WISHers: Being a nurse, I have always had good shoes, so not a big deal. I have a free membership to a great workout facility/wellness center at the hospital I work at. However, I have now bought underarmour cold gear for running outside, running pants, socks, & top from target for my indoor runs. Not to mention the registration fees for the 3 events this year, plus the cost of a trip to Disney in Jan. I am daily telling myself that I don't NEED the Garmin and a TM is not necessary! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Off to spend some time with my boys. I haven't seen them in 2 days!
Maggie :surfweb:
Maggie - You are doing GREAT! 12 hour shifts! :scared1: You are the WOMAN! You are not slow! About the Garmin - I have never trained with one and I have been running about 4 years. But I do have a Ron who I run with. He has a GPS program and has run 60+ marathons, tons of tris and a few ultras.

Rhonda - Oh when will you be in NC? I am about 2 hours away from where you will be.

Melissa - thanks for the bike smilie!

Someone asked where is Craig? Where is he? :confused3 Craig...have you dropped off the face of the earth?

I xtrained by painting DD8s room and putting up a border. princess: Will trail run tomorrow for 2 hours with the NC group. It is calling for snow.....Don't laugh all you people in the north. If we southerners see just 1 flake, we get excited and panic! :rotfl2:

Hey all the NC WISHERS (and anyone else who wants to) need to get together!

I agree! :thumbsup2 You are both doing all the right things.

Hey everyone - have a great weekend! :goodvibes I probably won't be on line all weekend. I'm supposed to get my new horse tomorrow but we'll see about this ****** winter storm coming our way! We are also supposed to go on a hike on Sunday at the new Nature Preserve down the street from our house. I was really looking forward to that but I don't know about doing it in 12" of ***** snow! :furious:

Can you tell it's time for me to move to Florida?!?!?!?! :smooth:

Darn that court case! I miss Cam around here! :sad2:

OK talk to you guys on Monday!

Sounds great! I could drive over to Greensboro when Rhonda is there for a WISH meet. Rhonda when are you there and could you fit us in your schedule?

Sunny or anyone, when I am posting, how do I put more than one person's quote in my text?

Colleen

Oh, boy, you guys sure know how to talk! (yeah, I know, it takes one . . . ;) ).

Rhonda -- I was hoping for a report here on how DH and DD enjoyed their Sweetheart Dance. I hope it was wonderful. :cloud9: Oh, and by the way, as far as your DD acting like a teenager getting ready? You ain't seen nothing yet -- just ask Sunny or me! :lmao:

Dave -- So glad to hear you spent your rest evening snuggled with DW instead of out with your buddies doing the beer and peanuts thing! :thumbsup2

First of all, I have to tell you, Sunny, that I went back and re-read your marathon report, too, and LOVED being mentioned -- it meant so much to Howard and me to be there at BC to cheer you on! :cheer2:

Judy -- I hope your new baby arrives tomorrow, though I hope she is not greeted by a show-quality skunk!

Jodi -- Congrats on your WW success! From your very cute picture, I'm not sure you could afford to lose anymore! BTW, I always imagine your adorable smile when you post here. That picture is awesome!

Heather -- where do you find the energy to do all that riding? I know your job is so demanding. I hope you have a great weekend and have some time to relax. :wizard:

Helen -- That little spinny guy is hysterical! :rotfl2: I hope there was some dinner left for Tim when he got home! Wine makes me hungry, too!

Hi, Amy! Welcome! As you can see, this is a lively bunch! You will be cross-training just keeping up with this thread! :rolleyes1

Christy -- I have nothing to add to the bike conversation. I have NO coordination at all whatsoever. I'll just virtual ride with all our WISH buddies and live vicariously ----> :moped:

Hey, Krista -- I thought of you Sunday night. That was a heck of a game, wasn't it? It's a shame so many Seahawks fans are such sore L---ers!

Melissa -- my kids know better than to bother me before I've had my coffee! :sad2:

Minnie -- sorry water therapy doesn't seem to have done the trick. Still sending :wizard: and  and :goodvibes:

Maggie -- I think you NEED the Garmin and a TM!!! :teeth:

Dena -- Good luck on your 5K! :cool1:

Maherae -- So glad you are joining the WISH team in Anaheim in September! We'll have to do another updated roll call soon!

Oh, and on the yoga thing -- Dave, I decided last night my favorite posture is the "Happy Baby"! OMG! I was nearly :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl: Actually, I think ending the session in the fetal position was pretty soothing, too! The good news is that I finally think I have "hands to heart center" down pat! :lmao: That's about what I can manage at this point!

For everyone looking for Craig, he posted a new thread for the 2007 full. Let's go see if his green light is on! Hey, Craig, are you "green". Geez, I guess we are lucky the webmasters don't make that little light red. Can you imagine pointing out that someone's red light has been turned on all day? :smokin: <--- Hey, maybe there IS a use for the ciggie guy!

Well, my apologies again for being MIA. Was local counsel for 2 trials back to back and then had a new time-sensitive matter blow up over the last couple of days. I just don't think I can stand to spend another weekend in my office. I hope to get in a really good wog tomorrow a.m. before the snow comes in. Of course, I am partying with my partners and our spouses tonight, so I am not sure how early I can drag myself out of bed in the morning.

More later. See you all soon! Miss you desperately! :grouphug:

ETA: Thanks to everyone who sent congratulations to my DD. She is still on :cloud9: and I hope it will carry her for the next 5 weeks until she hears from her first choice.

Dona, we are way up north in Oak Ridge. I spend a few weeks in the summer down at LBI. Is that far from you? I think it still is?!

Thanks Lily, I guess I never really thought of myself as being in the position to run the full. But in all honesty I haven't registered yet b/c I'm keeping the thought in the back of my head that I may want to go for Mickey. :confused3 I have this HUGE mental block about the Full Marathon though. It seems like some kind of alternate reality for me. YET...I really have this itch to do it. I don't know.....I'm really torn right now?!

Since distance running is sooo new to me, I'm trying to determine how painful the really LRs are, particularly the marathon itself. I know that pain is temporary ;). But were you guys in any serious pain during the run or did you feel good? I know that may be a silly question...and maybe I don't want to know the answer LOL....but I guess I'm mentally preparing myself for the journey! :goodvibes

So Dave....what are you planning to run? We are definitely in the same place in terms of training. Are you considering the full yet???

Wow- lots going on today. I have my new bike!! party: I am soooo excited. I love it :cloud9: Too bad we are going to have cold, windy, rainy snowy weather all weekend. Not good for riding. I just rode around the cul-de-sac & up the hill with the kids (we're at the bottom of a hill , so I get hill work right off the bat) Cant wait to hit the bike trails.

Krista-where are you staying for the Country Music marathon. We will be there. DS is doing the kids one & I am probably volunteering. We need to hook up that weekend. Should be fun. :wizard: for Stephen.

Amy-WELCOME! Jump in any time. We are glad to have you! Looks like you are off to an awesome start with your training. Keep it up!

Sunny-that's great about the swimming lessons. You will be signed up for your first tri before you know it :teeth:

Dena-good luck in St. Pete!

Maherae-great to have another WISHer coming to DL! :thumbsup2

All right, so here's the deal with me, and some of you have heard bits and pieces of this. I am definitely considering the full. I've always had a dream of running a full marathon, and that's what I would most like to do. The reason I haven't signed up is not so much because of the race and distance - it's more because of the trip to Florida in January. I think I can do the distance, and with the support of everyone here I know I can make the full.

If my DW is not going to support something, it's going to be taking a trip to Florida in January. I anticipate the reaction will be something along the lines of, "we just went this past September, we can't afford to go again so soon, and DD8's princess: birthday is the day before the race (Jan 6th). If you want to do a marathon why don't you do one closer to home? What's wrong with the Rochester Marathon in September (I was actually thinking I could do the 1/2 in Sept for training)."

Therefore, I was thinking if DW sees me really committed to this and training for a month or so she might actually believe I will do this and it's not just a whim. At the same time, I've been trying to save up some money so the trip and race wouldn't be a huge hit to our budget.

If it was just me, I would sign up right now. But I'm trying to figure out how me signing up for the marathon will impact on the entire family. Uuugh, as I write this it sounds very wishy-washy, but I'm trying to be both financially responsible and family responsible (in regards to DD8's princess: birthday, the holidays right before, and school and stuff).

What do you all think?

Family man dave - I don't know!!!! Your family is truely blessed, however, that you put them b/4 your own desires. I guess that is pretty much the only way to be a good spouse/parent. Basically, I have no advice about whether you should do the race or not, but you do a thumbs up for doing right by your family :thumbsup2 You might consider saving up $ by doing the walking/running to disney like sunny did. you will have to ask her about it!!

The boy wanted these in the post:yoda: :darth: :tink: paw: :dumbo: :charac4: :dancer: pixiedust: :worship:

Dave...just one thing that *might* help in persuading the family to go in January.

There is no better more magical place to celebrate a child's b'day than Disney World. They get soooooooo much attention!! We just celebrated my littlest princess' b'day a few weeks ago at WDW and it has created memories that will last a lifetime. Honestly, it was so wonderful. So you could really make this a two for one.....you could plan some special days for your DD and also run the marathon. :teeth:

Colleen-- to quote multiple posters you need to cut and paste the words you want to quote and then put:

{QUOTE=postername]

in front of the quote and:

{/QUOTE]

at the end of teh quote. BUT replace the curly bracket with a square one. I had to put the curly or else the server turns my instructions into a quote.

Dave-- you are not wishy washy at all. You are going through the exact same thing I struggle with. My desire to do these races has to fit within my family responsibility. So far I am the only passionate runner in the family. (Actually, so far I am the only runner in the family). DD has given it a shot a few times. Dx went to the Y once. But guess what? I signed him up for the WDW Half '07 :lmao: He doesn't know yet. I'm hoping my subtle plan of coersion over the year will get him there (and he'll think it was his idea if I really pull it off!). But seriously, I feel a constant pull between my heart's desire to train and race and my family, work, etc. I envy the couple runners/walkers here sooooo much!

Craig needs to come keep Dave company! What is Dave supposed to talk about when we go off on painted toe tangents????

TiffJ-- thanks! Ya my tri is right around the corner... as soon as I remember how to swim correctly and get on a bike for the first time in 20 years!!!!!

AmyBeth-- As far as pain goes, it is really tricky. LRs bring about a tight, non-specific aching/fatigue. I would be concerned if you feel a sharp pain during your LR. If pain causes you to change your gait to compensate or limp, that's not good. It can be tricky to know when to push through and when to back off.

MelR-- Our boys can communicate through smilies. Mine is putting his message here:

:thumbsup2 :lmao: :moped: :hippie: :rolleyes1 :wave2: pixiedust:  :dancer: :rockband: party:

I've got to get him to bed.

Sunny

I haven't been around this week - DH's 89 yo mom has been in and out of the hospital in NY all week and I have been busy dealing with that. He is off to Brooklyn in the AM to see what is really going on. From what we are hearing she is not doing well.
I have been working out - it does relieve the stress. Several of the workouts have been real stonkers but I am glad I did them anyway. I also got my first John Bingham book as an early Valentine and am about halfway through it!
Got to go get some sleep now. Early airport run in the AM to send DH off.

OMG - Thank you Cam, for the congrats and the great compliments! It's kind of funny - everyone that I know was surprised that I even went on WW, but I had gained a lot of weight between my wedding and going to Disney.

Weight Watchers has me at a goal of 127.20, which means I only have to lose a little bit more weight, but my personal goal is to get down to 110 - 115.....So I have a little bit to go.

Hey Everyone,

Right now - after reading so much about marathoning and being a part of this thread......well, it has gotten me pumped up and yesterday I actually asked my friend if she'd like to take part in both the half and the full marathon at Disney - am I crazy??? Do you guys think that I can do it?

Of course, I won't be sharing this with my DH - he already has his doubts about me being able to do the marathon, and now I'm going to get all goofy on him.....I don't think he'll be able to take it :teeth:
