Wk of Feb 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Just a quick post before I take DS to the climbing wall at the Y.

I did my LR this morning. Remember back in Nov when I said I don't run if its under 25 degF? Well today's LR was (Mel look away) 14 DEG F!!! It was bitter cold but at least very little wind. I wore two pairs of gloves, two pairs of socks, two fleeces over my ls running shirt and my CWX tights. I should have worn two pairs of tights as well. My pace was horrible, the worst in a full year. I did 10 miles with an avg pace of 11:26. But its done. Now I don't feel so worried about my half. I will try to do 12 miles next Sat.

Sunny

Sunny - way to go!!! we have days like that here, but this winter has been extremely mild. today the low is to be 19 deg f. I'm planning on beating down the ol' tm!! Have a great time w/ the boy at the y. You should do a few routes. With your strength training, you should be able to top it out no prob!!!! The boy loved the smilie message last night. He had lots of questions about the sender of such. We'll have to get them together next year and then maybe it won't be so boring for them while we chit chat!!! :teeth:

10 miles with a 11 minute pace is something I can only dream about. Congrats on doing it in that cold of weather. It is about 32 around here and my husband is hiking about 10 miles with a group of boy scouts to get them ready to go out to New Mexico this summer. THey will behiking for 10 days straight so they are going out once a month to get ready.

Amy LB is about an hour from LBI. I am at exit 105 on the parkway. Are you anywhere near Glen ROck. ONe of my sisters lives there and one lives in Bergenfield and one in Hackensack.

Oh, got another question - Is there somewhere I can call with questions about the marathon? I want to know if I register for the 1/2 marathon in addition to the full marathon......would they automatically just track that or can I change to the Goofy Challenge?

Thanks,

Jodi

OK...my training plan called for a 2 mile run tomorrow. But since we're expecting a big snow I decided to run today. I was sore from my XT yesterday....it was a really hard class. But I'm glad I squeaked my run in today.

I ran my first mile in just over 11 min and my second in 12. It's a really hilly course that I run, and I had about .5 mile of incline after my 1st mile which really wiped me out. I was really spent when I hit my 2 mile marker. I really don't think I could have pushed for 2.5...and yet in two weeks that's what I"ll be running!! YIKES!

BTW Sunny.....that is an awesome pace! I can't even imagine doing 10 miles let alone 10 at that incredible pace. You rock!!! :cheer2:

Dona: Your relatives aren't too far from me....they are just a bit east in Bergen County. My DH works nearby those towns :) . Too bad LB isn't closer to LBI....would be nice to get together for a run this summer. :sunny:

Jodi! Congrats on your WW success! :thumbsup2 And if you go Goofy I'll really be in awe :smooth: . That's an amazing goal. Wayyy beyond my realm of comprehension right now LOL. But I am considering the full. However after feeling pretty wiped out after just 2 miles I question how I'll even do 13 ?! :confused3

Hey all! Just got back from my 2 hour run. No snow, just rain, hard rain, in the low 30s, in the mud, running 2 hours. I was freezing. I told Bree we were sick in the head to think this was fun! I came home and soaked in the hottest bath ever for at least 30 min (or more). I know...ice bath after a LR, but I feel like I had already taken the ice bath.

Jodi - I think you can do it. If you can run a mile, it takes around 20 weeks to fully train for a marathon. You have plenty of time to train, but take it slow and don't get hurt...you will have to do some back to back LRs. So the time is the biggest issue. I don't know about your 2nd question...when I signed up, I just signed up for the Goofy.
Since distance running is sooo new to me, I'm trying to determine how painful the really LRs are, particularly the marathon itself. I know that pain is temporary . But were you guys in any serious pain during the run or did you feel good? I know that may be a silly question...and maybe I don't want to know the answer LOL....but I guess I'm mentally preparing myself for the journey!
Amybeth - Every run is different. You can do a 22 miler and feel great, then next week do the 12 tempo run and it is aweful! I have never, yet, been in pain during a marathon. The Goofy, for me, was pretty easy...I was running a lot slower than normal though. You have plenty of time to train, so that is good. I think you could do it. Like I said before, you have to think about the time it involves to train.

To all the new people wanting to do the marathon and not knowing if you can do it! Here is my humble opinion. - The race is, well, the easy part! It is the training that is hard and time consuming (sp?). If you put the time into training, you will do the race with no problem. If you do Goofy, there will have to be double LRs. (My training group went to 12/24) This said, I always train to 24 miles instead of 18 or 20. I feel like the 18 &/or 20 mile marker is where the race becomes mental! This is where people usually hit "THE WALL". If you have already run this distance, then you can say..."I have done this b/4" and it will be easier. Not trying to discount programs that take you to 18 or 20......this is just my experience. B/c we all have plenty of time, these distances can be done.

Trying to catch up here, everyone has so much going on.

Carrie - :wizard: :wizard: on the Xray, hope you can find the cause

Dave - Another Good luck on the grant. I agree making it a combo of a Bday trip is a great idea

Cam- Congrats to Jean, you must be so proud of her.

Helen - I am so jealous, I dream of TDL!! :cheer2:

Amy - Welcome, I hope to be where you are after months of training. You should be so good to go.

Krista - :wizard: to Stephen.

Maggie - 13.5 slow NO WAY! I aspire to 13.5 on a permanent basis.

Judy - I am inspired by you :cheer2: I am so glad your numbers are dropping

Lily - Thanks for the advice & inspiration. Also I loved the scarf, wore it through the whole race and it now hanging on my bedroom wall with my race number. It serves as a inspiration & affirmation that I can & will do the full in '07.

I talked to Dr. about the mystery pain in my knee, I am off the TM & any wog until I see him Tuesday. I do have permission to do the ARC trainer, less impact & pressure. He also thinks it is muscular but being a Marathoner himself knows I am so scared it will break up any training. Also is gonna make me a real training schedule for a full, well after about 100 "Are you sures?"

You guys impress me 4AM  I get up at 5 for work just the thought of 4am is

Just wondering if this happens to anyone else who wogs in the freezing cold, I get pain in my lungs. My throat feels scratchy like I swallowed glass and my lungs almost ache. Anyone? and if so how do you prevent it?

Oh does anyone have the picture from Trails End? I would love a download. Thanks

So Dave....what are you planning to run? We are definitely in the same place in terms of training. Are you considering the full yet???
My experience during the race was fantastic! I felt like I was floating and kept waiting for that “Wall” that thankfully I never experienced during the event. I hit my “Wall” while training. It is a story in itself so I won’t bore ya with it, but I pushed through and made my steps. Kept the training going the same as I had planned, and made sure I was not trying to go faster than I needed. I trained my base at a faster pace, but when I was in the really long LRs at the end I made myself stick to the slowest pace to get me through. I just wanted to make those LRs. It worked! I planned that my base training would take me through and if I was having a good day I could kick up a bit if I was feeling ok. For me it worked.

YOU CAN DO IT! (Did I mention this before?)

I would say that I truly did not understand what was meant by the full being a LOT of mental as well as physical. If you can beat that mental thing the rest will be a good history. Tell yourself YOU WILL DO YOUR BEST. Keep safe and train wisely, listen to your body and do what you are able. You have 3 ½ hours to finish the half and 7 hours to finish the full. You are at that pace right now!

Who wanted to know how to post multiple quotes? I usually open Word and compose there so you can quote and then use the back button on the browser to continue to the next post you want to quote.--Copy-paste-edit--Also, you could open 2 threads at the same time and go between them to do the same. (Hope it makes some sense)

Happy Saturday Morning Everyone!

Tammy & Christa - I'll be in Greensboro from 2/17 - 2/21. We (me, dd5, ds2, and my sister) are flying into Raleigh (cheapest fare we could get) early on 2/17 and then leaving from Raleigh on the afternoon of 2/21. Saturday 2/18 would probably not be best since it is our first full day there but I could probably steal away for a few hours on Sunday 2/19 or Monday 2/20. I will have a rental car so I can drive to meet somewhere but since I don't know the area that well I'll need someone else to pick the place! So, let me know and maybe we can work something out - that would be sooooo fun!!

We let dd5 stay up late last night to watch the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Anyone else watch? Dh and I are huge Olympic fans (especially the winter games) so we will be working the TIVO pretty hard for the next 2 weeks :rotfl:

Sunny - you are a madwoman - 14 degrees???????? Since it almost never even gets close to 14 degrees here in Texas I don't even go outside in those temperatures let alone run in it!!!!!

Minnie - sending you yet another dose of pixie dust :wizard: in hopes that you'll soon be on your way to a full recovery. I'll cross my fingers that the MRI is just what you need for a proper diagnosis so you can get the right care and be feeling much better soon!

Lily - so good to see you here again. Glad to know ds is healing and doing better.

Liz - where are you? We need you around here - come and see hello, okay?

Helen - any news on dh's vacation? Are you going to be able to go to Tokyo DL? I would love to go there and we plan to visit once the kids are older - everything I've seen about the two parks there looks fantastic!!

MelR - glad you are enjoying your new t/m. I'd like to have one too but then I'd have to worry about the kids while I am using it so I think we are all safer with me using the one at the gym :rotfl2:

Nancy - prayers for your MIL - hope her condition improves and that your dh has a good visit with her.

Tiff - great news on your new bike. I hope you have the chance to really get out and break it in soon!

AmyBeth - welcome to our group - it is great to have your here!

Cam - thanks for asking about dh and dd's Sweetheart Dance. They had a great time and I am sure she'll want to go back next year. It was held at Southfork Ranch (might mean something to those who remember it from the Dallas tv show) and they had dinner and a deejay for dancing etc. I will try to post a picture but I don't know if I quite know how yet so be patient with me :)

GentryAndDad.jpg

I don't know why dd was leaning like the tower of Pisa but it turned out cute nonethless!

Gotta get busy around the house and hope for some time left for a long w/r today. Hope everyone has a great day!

Rhonda-- what a great pic!

Nancy-- prayers for you and your MIL.

Mickey-- I used to have trouble with burning lungs in the cold temps but it seems much less now. Maybe that's something the body trains through, too. Today I used a micro-fleece wrap thingy (don't know what its called) that wrapped around my lower face, covering my nose and mouth. I pushed it down from time to time, but when my tongue started to sting and my nose got too numb I pulled it back up. It was really fine to run with, not to confining. I'm so jealous you found yourself a marathoner dr who will work with you!

Thanks to those who liked my pace! When I say 11:00 is slow, please realize I am speaking relative to my own current training/racing experience. We are a big group of people with all different paces/distances. I would never think 11:00 was slow for someone currently PR-ing there. And when my super fast gym friend complains she burned out at a 7:30 for her last 5K I understand what it means to her!

Christa-- I don't know if its coincidental or not, but my longest training run for the full was 22 miles and my post race analysis was that I felt I was well trained for 22 miles. I really hope to push to 24 before Goofy. But I have a friend who never trained higher than 16 mile LRs for her first marathon and pretty much breezed through it. (As you know, I wasn't "breezing" after 22 miles!!!).

MelR-- We had a blast at the Y. We were there for a while when a Dad asked if it was ok for him to climb. The staff guy said, "sure", so you know I had to try it after that!!!! I only went up once since there were lots of kids patiently waiting in line. I only made it 3/4 of the way! He put me on the hard side and I got to a point that I couldn't figure out what to do next. I tried to gain leverage from the rope at one point and he yelled up "the rope won't help you!" He was right. When I came down he showed me where I went wrong. So next time I'll go to the top! It was hard though! DS didn't do very well. He's too scared. I don't know where this sudden fear has come from. He used to be so fearless he scared me to death! Now he's wimping out big time. I hope its a short lived phase.

Christa-- Tell Bree I say "hi" and I miss her! BTW, I'll trade my Garmin for your Ron... I've looked and amazon.com doesn't seem to be stocking them anymore (Ron's that is) :lmao:

Ok, now DS and I are on our way to see Curious George. We went last night and sat for 40 minutes before they announced there were technical difficulties and the show wouldn't be on. :furious:

Snows gonna fly... Looks like I'll be getting a serious upperbody workout!

Sunny

Here is a smilie from sunny's site for the TM workouts!!

Sunny - congrats on your first climb. I have no doubt that you will get it next time!!!!!! Wesley has gone through the stages of fear and invincibility as well. I'm sure it changes like the wind!!!!!!

MickeySP I'll put myTE pic at the end of the post!!

Rhonda - I did 10 miles on the TM this morning. the boy was right there w/ me. He did some tv watching and made me pretend mcdonald's sandwiches that i had to pretend to eat while i ran!!

For amy, i think, who asked about the pain/marathon, goofy was my first marathon. I trained w/ double lr's up to 10/20. I never hit the wall. i ran the race slower than my training pace, but i felt really great the whole time and even had major negative spilts for the last few miles!

OK her is the te pic. I have several others, but i think this is the one w/ the most people in it.

Nancy - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your DH :grouphug:

I have an MRI update - My ortho's office called and twice. First to say they had a cancellation for 2/15 and then to call back and say that they couldn't get me in that day but could first thing on 2/16 which is better than the 2/20. I said the sooner the better :teeth: .

Thank you everyone for your concern and support. I'll keep you updated.

Judy - I hope you are enjoying your new addition! I know what an exciting time this is :cheer2:

Yea, Ron is AWESOME! He does all our training plans! He ran with us today and carried a 35lb back pack. He is training for Bataan and has to carry the pack in that. So that means he could carry all our stuff. :teeth:

I think I am going to sign up for the bike to Myrtle Beach in September. MB is 4 hours from Charlotte in a car. Not sure of the milage, but it takes 2 days!

Oh, cannot do Sunday & have a big meeting Monday. :sad2:

Wimped out on my long ride this morning. It was going to be 40 degrees with high winds. No thanks! I slept in instead. Took the DDs to the park, and it was cold. We still had a blast.

I did make it to the gym yesterday. I did 2 miles on the TM, running almost the whole time. I have the relay marathon in May. My part of the race is 4 miles, and I want to be able to run the whole way. I am going to slowly increase my mileage to reach my goal.

Dave would be so proud of me. We got a Ding fare to Tampa for spring break-$128 round trip. We will rent a minivan and drive to DW. :cheer2: We have 6 people in our family (me, DH, and 4 DDs) so that cheap fare made my week! Otherwise, I had a 16 hour car ride ahead of me, which I was not looking forward to. We leave March 4th. I have got to start packing soon.

Jodi- Last year, you simply registered for the 1/2 and the full and then you can do the Goofy Challenge. It should be the same way next year. I am registered for the full, but I am still thinking about going for the Goofy. :goofy: Registration for both events closed in August last year, so we have a little time to decide. It would definitely be a once in a lifetime achievement. We need to convince Cam and Mel (Chimera) to go Goofy and then we could all train and do it together.

Oh my goodness!!!! I did a six mile walk today at an EASY 16 minute pace!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! :cool1: I had my DH with his GARMIN or I would have thought that I had done something wrong to my GARMIN. I'm signing us up for Minnie...well, maybe. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you..Cam, Sunny, Christa, Mel, Judy...EVERYBODY!! It really can be done!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: That 15 minute pace is in sight!!

Hey all!

I guess I need to stop being shy...stop lurking. I signed on last year after committing to the 06 half, but dropped off the radar.

DH and I decided to do Goofy 2007.

Had a great run today. DD and I are doing Minnie in May, so I walked with her as my warm-up. Then, I surprised myself by running 4 miles at 10:08 min pace. (DH says I don't push myself hard enough.)

You all seem like such a great bunch!

:cheer2: Way to go Maherae!!! CONGRATS...that is sooo awesome!!!

Welcome Disneybelle....I'm a newbie to this forum and thread myself :goodvibes . This is the nicest group on the internet...and so super supportive! Nice to see another NJ girl here...are you a north, central or southern NJer :) .

Greetings Everyone: Sounds like everyone's having a good weekend of training. I did my long walk (LW) today - 3.9 miles at a 14 mpm pace.

Heather - I am proud of you for getting the DING fare. I always wish that I could use them when I see them. It's good to know that someone can make use of the good deal.

Maherae - Great job on the 6 mile walk at a 16 min pace! That is fantastic.

disneybelle - Don't be shy. I'm sure we'd all like to hear about your experience with the 1/2 marathon last year. I'm really impressed with your 4 mile run at 10:08 pace! Way to go!

Marahae - awesome job today!!6 miles is a long way!!!!

Disneybelle - welcome again. Good job on your fast pace that is wonderful!!

Dave - WOW!! Great job on your LW. You really upped the mileage. How do you feel?? Oh yeah, thanks for returning the favor and giving me permission for a guilt free rest on friday. I got it done today and now i can enjoy the weekend!

Heather - I hate riding in the wind. It often feels like the bike is going to blow out from under you. I would have skipped it too. Way to go on the running!

Christa - that myrtle beach thing sounds so cool. i just got a flyer in a bike gear order about riding a loop around colorado. i told phil that i want to go for my b'day w/ ec. he said ok. it looks intimidating though, so i'm not sure that i could do it. it seems like it would be really cool though. i keep putting of the whole 2nd baby decision. first it was, we'll decide after i finish goofy. now we are waiting until after the OT 50 miler. (april 22) If i sign up for that thing in june, well.... you know! I tried to ride when i was first preg w/ the boy and i had horrible balance and kept crashing. i had my biggest crash ever b/4 i found out i was preg! I actually have theories about how that positively effected conception but i shouldn't go into those here :teeth:
