Wk of Feb 3rd-- WISH Walking/Running Club

What the heck! I'll lynch you myself. And maybe the Steelers can make funny commercials to laugh at themselves, but at least we have the grace to lose a game with dignity.

2. I never said "The better team didn't win today"

3. I have never called any game played in another season a "rehash" of anything.

Please do not put words in my mouth.

And yeah, I'm sured I referred to Belichek as Belicheat, but I didn't crown them "cheaters", the NFL did when Belichek was fined and the Patriots have to give up a draft pick.

Krista-- I have no bones to pick at all. Not even during the year when you frequently referred to me as "PatsyBill" and referred to Bill Belichek as Belicheat.

My references to Pittsburgh Steeler players comments where simply directed to your reference that the Steelers somehow have the grace to lose with dignity. Those are comments made by Steelers, and I believe that includes your beloved Hines Ward, after losing to the Patriots in past AFC Championship games and this year after the infamous "SpyGate". In that you used the phrase "we have the grace", I mistakenly took that to mean the "we" also applied to the Steelers specific acts of grace and dignity. Sorry for getting confused over when you are a "we" and when they are a "we."

By the way, the NFL never "crowned", determine, intimated or hinted that the Patriots cheated. The NFL determined the Patriots violated a league rule by taping from the sideline -- taping from the stands and press box is allowed, but not from the field. In fact, in making its determination, the NFL expressly noted, and has done so on many occassions since, that the Patriots obtained no competitive advantage from its taping. The Patriots have been "crowned" cheaters by disgruntled and annoyed players and fans (as well as SI's Peter King who kept calling them cheaters even though he admitted later on that he has nothing to base his claims on) just because the "we['s] have the grace to lose a game with dignity," but apparently not the grace to lose too many games to the same team with dignity.

Question: Has anyone taken a ChiRunning workshop? Scott has read tehbook adn shared tips and i am now reading it. Looking to do a workshop this spring. That whole runnign injury free thing would be nice.

I just picked up the ChiWalking book as someone recommended it to me given my physical issues. From my lurking on the Philly '08ers f/k/a MCMers thread, I think Jodi is a big advocate of ChiRunning, but I don't know if she's ever done a workshop. If you're feeling brave, you might want to risk entering that thread to ask her.

I sure would be interested in a workshop. I'm reading the book now too Carrie. I'm reading it since I can't run due to my latest injury.

We welcome all comers, and we can certainly learn from everyone. No one should ever fear us at all that's for sure.

Whatever, Bill, it doesn't matter because I'm officially done.

Dave--Yep, we'll be in Cleveland in May! Let's see, I'll be 28 weeks by then, nice and fat! :thumbsup2 I haven't felt the baby move yet, I've heard with your first you usually don't feel it until you are 17-18 weeks along. But I know for sure it's moving all around (I can't wait to find out what the baby is, I hate calling the baby "it"), the nurse had a heck of time trying to get a good heartbeat reading on Friday because it kept moving all around. :)

Umm, ok, wow. And I thought this was the friendly board. :confused3

Anyway, I managed 3.5 miles this afternoon.

Chad is sitting at the elementary school, holding our place in line to regsiter Zack for kindergarten. How the heck did that happen so fast?! And around here our elementary school is not only the best one in the city, but the morning session is in very high demand since that is the only way to get your kid into an afterschool day care type program. If your kid is in the afternoon session, day cares do not provide morning care. (if that makes any sense! :rotfl: ) So, I am going to get a quick shower and relieve Chad from his line sitting duties.

Cam & Howard - you guys rock! And tell Andrew how much another WISHer is of him! :thumbsup2

Well in the name of cross-training, I finally jumped in and took the stroke training class at my gym. Can you say humiliation? By lap 8, I was clutching the side of the pool between laps and gasping for breath. I refused to give up even after the instructor moved to my side of the pool. When he started pacing beside me I decided I must look as pathetic as I felt. I wanted to scream "I ran a marathon less than a month ago - I am really not this out of shape" Instead I quietly attempted to wave good bye (My arm wasn't cooperating) and I slithered out of the pool area completely disgraced. I was going to try a spin class on Wednesday but now I think I will wait until the gym's instructors have forgotten what I look like.

Cecilia

Too funny....did he make you do flip turns?

I decided I was going to learn how to swim when I turned 50 so I enrolled in a beginner's swimming course for adults at our local Y. I think the guy was used to teaching little kids because as an exercise we had to swim through a hula hoop. As a 50-year-old 200 lb. woman (in a black bathing suit, no less), I felt like I was auditioning for the role of Shamu the whale! Talk about degradation!

Cecilia,

I feel your pain. I decided to get back in the pool and use swimming as cross training. I haven't done it for over 20 years. But it's just like riding a bike, right? :) Anyway, the first time, I felt like I was going to drown and that water would go up my nose and into my brain! But after about 15 minutes (and alternating strokes) I felt almost okay. Hope it gets better, cause I think it will be useful to do to keep the knees from crying uncle.

Anyway, as a newbie runner, I reached a milestone over the weekend. I ran 3 miles without any walking in about 28/29 minutes (I forgot to start my watch!) I'm really only shooting for 10 minute miles, so I know I need to work on pace. But I'm not worrying about that now. Just gotta build my miles.

Maura

Carrie - I picked up the ChiRunning book in Chicago last week. I really hope it helps me. My area is not the greatest for running inspiration, so I doubt a session will ever come here. But if one came close I would love to go to one!

Krista - I forgot to mention about the heartbeat. Yah for you. I cried when I heard it with #1, and also with #2, but that is because they couldn't find it. Well now I know why... she is a WILD child!!!!!

Jeff - I also wanted to mention about your siggy.... totally LOVE the things you tell Lenna. You daughter and mine seem so much alike. We may not want them to ever meet!! ;)

Oh, and I am a total slug. Did 40 on the TM on Saturday and another 20 of other things. But today didn't make it to the gym. I need a personal assistant to keep me in line and get me to where I really need to go!!!!

Chi Running workshop- never taken one, read a book on running for triathletes that subscribed to Ken Mierke's Evolution Running principles which are basically the same thing and made the changes about two years ago. With one notable exception that was entirely my fault and due to copious violation of the 10% rule, I've been uninjured running since.

Bill and other Boston area folk- Chi running workshop(s) Mar 30 at MIT at a big Multisport expo:
http://www.newenglandmultisportexpo.com/
The info on Chi Running, Total Immersion swimming, and Yoga for Athletes and other clinics is under the Clinics tab. The Expo itself plus seminars are free but these clinics have a fee. We'll probably drive over for the event.

Cecilia- swimming is 80+% technique from doing it competitively from a young age and then some conditioning. My little sister's conditioning in the pool is miserable right now but she can get in and beat me without a huge amount of effort and I swim circles literally around most people at the pool. Why- I'm an adult onset swimmer and she was whining about not being allowed by Mom to swim the 1650 until she was 10. I will never have the feel for the water that she does. I think Kevin/solotraveler was a competitive swimmer too. The bright side to this is that swimming is the shortest part of a triathlon proportionally so I usually can take back what I lose to the true fishies on the bike and run. So the upshot of this is don't feel too bad, just get back there and tri it again. Think of it as a new challenge:)

Back to lurk mode.

am very happy to say that the tiredness is quickly decreasing and I'm able to stay up later than 7:30! I did almost 7 miles this weekend, 3 miles running on Friday and 3.75 miles of walking on Sunday afternoon. I was supposed to go 4 miles, but I had Hines with me and the poor dog was absolutely dragging at 3.50 miles. We were in front of the house at 3.75, so we headed in. I have to get him trained again, not that long ago he was running 15-20 miles a week and can do 6 miles at a 10:00 pace.

Yay Krista! AWESOME getting those miles in this weekend!! :thumbsup2

Cecilia: OMG...now I'm REALLY scared to take spin class. AND more scared to train for this tri. Swimmers are amazing in my book...that's tough work!!! Way to go on getting out there girl! You did awesome despite how you felt! :goodvibes I can see it now....I fall off the bike and faint from exhaustion. The clients whisper "didn't she just run a marathon??"

Jeanne: THANK YOU for all the great info on the spin class :).

Soooo far behind. You've all been posting machines! Yea!!! I love the energy we have. I'm going to miss some posts from last week, but here goes:

Mel: Yea, that's you, slacker. Hah! You sound like you have a nice, even pace? If so, congrats! I'd like to get that kind of consistency off-TM.

Howard: 19 miles! Yeah!! And to your DS, :cool1: Life Rank, huh? That's impressive. Kudos to Jenn, too! And Cam. Geez, the whole family is just so darned impressive!

Mike and Kathy: I'd definitely pay to see a pic of Mike taking Pilates. Walk in the park, trust me. Oh, and Saturday's 14 miles wasn't bad. :lmao:

Lisa: Big shout-out to you for being so encouraging of the Super Goofs! (Not that they need it). But you should know that I'm also inspired by your "try something new" challenge! What a great way to kick things off!

Stacey: 4 miles instead of 3! That's a HUGE difference, percentage-wise and in terms of effort! WTG!

WWDave: I hope your walking has been going as well as your trash-talking. Team Ohana misses your special attention, but I can see why you'd be hesitant to give us your motivational speeches. We are intimidating.

Vic: I hope the recovery from pneumonia continues to going well!

Amy: You never fail to impress me with all your energy. You keep my head in the XT game, and I mean that in a good way. I miss the ski machine at my old gym; the elliptical just isn't the same.

Tricia: That's great that you and your DN might do the Minnie 5K. I hope your calves feel better and you enjoy your running club.

CarolA: Welcome! WTG with planning for Peachtree and getting your 3.4/50 minutes in. I tend to use my watch and my Nike+ for time/distance. The latter isn't particularly accurate, but tends to be close enough for my purposes at this point. I'm hoping to invest in a Garmin soon. I have a water belt for LRs. But I'll let those more experienced than I speak in more detail.

Renee: Great job with your run; it looks like you'll be in good shape for an April 1/2!

Kristi: Hopefully it's a good sore from the Fitness Yoga, right?

Angie: I think you're doing great! And I hope you're thinking of sticking with XT as a way to mix things up.

Jeff: WTG on the 10 miler! And hey, with any luck, your Garmin will record similar data during the Miles/Minutes challenge! :rotfl2:

Erin: WTG on the 40 minutes--wtg? on the quiz?

Chris: Another TM run at a good pace! I agree that running every other day might be good training, as it sounds like you can handle it.

Cam: What a great mini-report on the polar-bear plunge. Loved the pics!:thumbsup2

Liz: 1.75 is much better than nothing! You started your workout & then were smart enough to quit before anything went wrong! And lugging new equipment around? Now, THAT's a workout!

AlDisneyGirl: Welcome! Seems like we have quite the Peachtree contingency here.

Kevin: I'm looking forward to reading your report. Goofy kind of gets in your blood, doesn't it? (I have to say, I envy your times...)

BunnyFoo: Welcome! You're already doing great with a 5/2, and on a TM! I can't wait to hear more of your progress. It sounds like the Minnie will be such fun.

Christy: Thanks for the info on PowerPump.

Tracey: I like Rodney Yee's series of yoga videos. He offers a range of levels of practice, so you could choose one that fits your interests.

39Cinderella: Get out there and do it, girl! Let the high from the Superbowl game carry over into your workout!

Karen: I'm glad you're feeling better and that your miles went easy. And geocaching? That sounds like so much fun!

Judy: WTG with the 40. Isn't it amazing how fast a weekend can fly by? I'm also with you on the Superbowl. I was so sick I crawled in bed & missed the first quarter!

As for me: I was sicker this weekend than I have been in a long time. I managed to keep up with XT, although I'm not quite sure if it was because I was motivated by the desire to sweat the fever out of me or by the Miles/Minutes Challenge. I managed to put in my time Saturday & Sunday, but without a lot of energy or conviction.

By Sunday I was convinced any working out was an exercise in foolishness more than anything else. I worked out that morning & was crashed in my bed by the afternoon. We canned our Superbowl festivities so that I could rest; I woke up in time to see the halftime show and part of the 3rd quarter. Then I crawled in bed; it turns out I missed an incredible game!

The good news is, all that sleep on Sunday--I probably clocked 14 hours--eventually broke my fever. I woke up today feeling better than I had since Thursday. I even thought I'd be able to run today, but decided to be conservative & go to the gym. Lucky for me, because I got 1 mile in on the TM before I said, "Nope, not recovered yet." So I did yet more XT, at a leisurely pace that didn't hurt my lungs. At least I no longer feel contagious and I'm logging minutes for Team Ohana (albeit the hard way). I'm hoping to get some real R/W in by Wednesday.

No training to report yet. I had a physical today. All was well. I'll spare everyone the details, but I did have one funny thing happen-- the doctor was looking under my arm and he asked me if I had some sort of accident or something because he saw "a little discolored area." So I'm drawing a blank (I'm in the gown, who can think?!) and then it hits me. Yep, marathon sports bra injury. I forgot all about it!

I have the ChiRunning book, but I read it awhile back. I didn't understand a lot of it, but I hadn't been running long. I probably need to get it out again. A clinic would be very cool. (My problem was always that it made perfect sense when I read it, but I couldn't remember what I read when I was running).:rolleyes1

I'd be interested in ChiWalking too. My mom and her friend who scream teamed signed up for the 2009 half. They're in good shape, but are nervous about the pace. Right now I've instructed them to walk 3-4 times a week about 3-4 miles each time, and to focus on the mileage more than the time. I want them to develop some confidence first, and then try to maybe incorporate a very small bit of "sweeper-avoiding" running intervals. Slow running is so much easier for me than fast walking! I can't believe they are looking to me to be their "coach"-- I'll be lurking a lot on the walkers thread because I am so completely underqualified!

Jeanne: Yes, this thread really does move at lightning speed, doesn't it? (Unlike me.) Good thing Ohana is spending more time on the road than online! :goodvibes And thanks for the information on spinning. DH and I keep talking about taking a class, and keep hesitating. So it's really good to read about how you keep challenging yourself--it's a great motivator for me!

Bill: My sympathies for you regarding the Superbowl Game, as I know how much your love your team, although it sounds like NY played a good game. I loved your DD's acknowledgment of the team in team sports. She's more mature than many of us. And the Pats had a phenomenal season; the loss & Bill's behavior at the end of the Superbowl can't take away from that.

Steve: It's too bad I missed the Big Ben commercial--and to think a year ago I wouldn't have known who Big Ben was. That's what living in Pgh will do to a person.

Deb: Welcome! Galloway's popular here, and it looks like you have a solid plan for the Minnie! I look forward to hearing your progress.

Krista: Great workout weekend. I'm glad you're getting over your tiredness & it's Hines who's tuckered out and not you. I'm really looking forward to reading about your training as everything progresses.

Cecilia: Your post had me rolling! That's what I feel like every time I try a new class. Don't mind me, I'll just slink off to my dark corner now.... It's good to know others have similar experiences. I'm really going to try and embrace Lisa's call to the Super Goofs & try something new and outside of my comfort zone.

Carrie: I didn't know about Yak Trax until you posted about them. How do they work for you. Just curious. I'm waiting to get the ChiRunning book & video from the library, so I'm interested in knowing what you and Scott make of it.

MouseDave: Good job with the 40 on the exercise bike! Another Cleveland entrant, huh? DH and I are still on the fence because of work commitments. (Boo, hiss, work. Why don't I just win the lottery? Oh yeah, because I don't play.)

Kristi: Remember when line-sitting was for concerts? Now it's for races & kindergarten! :lmao: WTG with the 3.5, btw!

Maura: You're doing wonderfully well. I hope to, someday, hit 3 miles in 30 minutes (a tortoise, I am). Congrats on your milestone/PR!

Jen: Oh, my co-captain. Pleakley is kind of slug like, sort of? I'm not a PA, in real or virtual life, but here goes. "Ahem.* "Get thee to a nunnery." Wait. That's not right, is it? Darn that humanities training. Anyway, celebrate the hour's worth of activity that you DID accomplish--you had one heck of a week!

xterratri: Thanks for the feedback on ChiRunning and Ken Mierke's Evolution Running. Another title for my rapidly expanding list. Now if I only had time to read them all...

JeninGA: No, I can totally see you as a coach. You seem so positive and upbeat! And FWIW, I think your planning strategy is spot-on!

I also second (third? fourth?) all the praise of the children in Scouting & the parents who support them! And it's not just because I like those Girl Scout cookies, although that doesn't hurt any... Ditto on the shout-out to supporting Special Olympics. Two activities that seem to fit well with a WISH ethos! :yay:

Actually Darlin, I was just over at y'all's thread visiting.

Worked up the courage to visit Ohana, huh? I hope we didn't scare you aware with our fierce, alien selves. You can always be considered an honorary member of the family, especially if you donate some miles and hours to the team.

Come on, you know you want to. Resistance is futile, you know.

Way to go! It sounds like you are off to a great start! I trained for Goofy by simply running whatever pace that felt good at the time. It is interesting to see how the pace varied from week to week. (Interesting that my fastest week was the week we spent at my in-laws!?!) So keep track of the time, but don't worry about it and keep building the miles.

Cecilia

Debra - But I still sit in GA concert lines all day to be on the rail! :lmao: I hope you are still on the mend. :wizard:

Cecilia - please keep up with the swimming. It's like anything else, it takes awhile to get going. You stick with that and I promise to stick with Fitness Yoga (and Chad watching through the glass & making fun as I attempt downward dog  ).

Well, we were #13 in line for Kindergarten. Phew! But we don't officially find out if we got the morning session until June. :confused3

Debra! I knew you were cool ;). Trekkie speak! Next Gen!!! :thumbsup2 . OMG...you worked out all sick and feverish. That's wayyyy hard core woman. Glad you're feeling better :goodvibes .
