Wk of Feb 26--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Evening everyone: I'm taking a rest day today. My legs feel dead, and I feel dead. I'm seeing if I can figure out how to post pictures.

If this works, this is a picture of my princesses DD5 princess: and DD8 princess: and I on Father's Day of last year. Hmmmm, I can't seem to get it any smaller, but it's a start.

Gator- thanks for the pics!

Kevin thanks for that article. Now I have even more questions though!

More questions on the WDW marathon and marathon general:
What exactly is gel? What does it taste like? When should it be used?

What sort of food do they provide on course? How often?

What do you bring with you when you are running a marathon?

Kevin, you refer to in your race report that the course splits and then rejoins...huh?

What is team in training? is it the same as TNT?

How often are toilets (or portipotties) located on course?

What exactly do those numbers mean when you refer to pacing? (ie 5/1, or 4:15 group)

And whats this about tracking on the web?

I'll try to answer as best I can again...

- For the full marathon, there were two different start lines and the beginning courses were different. Those two different groups merge at the 3.3 mile mark. This is not the case for the half, where they had a single start. If you can locate a course map, you can see sort of what I'm talking about with the split start.

- Gels are little packets of (for lack of a better word) goo which give you some energy and electrolytes and such. Most folks gel every hour or so, but that's something you want to play around with during training. They come in many flavors and you will want to try a few out until you find something you like (some are better tasting than others).

- They do provide some food..... I remember bananas at the halfway point... but otherwise i used my gels. I don't have my packet handy so I can't remember the others. There are 22 water stops along the course, some with food etc

- TNT= Team in Training, yes

- What to bring-- well, that's up to you. I used a belt pack and paced WAY too much in it. I USED my gels, gloves and sunglasses. The iPod, camera, etc stayed put the entire time. if you choose to go the beltpack route, wear it while training on some long runs so you get used to the fit and weight.

- Facilities-- Portajohns at the start, near the corrals and at the finish; as well as just about every aid station (water stops). Full bathrooms were only in the parks that I remember. I believe they seriously use every single rental john from Daytona to Tampa for this thing.

- Webtracking-- if someone wants to track you run on raceday, they can sign up to ge text messages or emails of your progress at different spots on the course. Information on how to do it is posted on the WDW marathon website closer to the race.

- Pacing-- 5/1 refers to run/walk segments. In Marathoning for Mortals, they have you use these for the run/walk or walk/run training plans. So, 5/1= 5 minutes of running, then one minute of walking. The pace groups are something different entirely. If you want to run a particular time, you can follow these pace groups that Clif Bar had set up and they keep you on pace. A double caveat here, though- First, don't worry about time for your first marathon. Second, the leaders will run dead even splits the whole time. Most runners don't do that in a marathon... they tend to taper off, so it might be hard keeping up.

I hope that helps you. If there was anything I didn't answer well or needs more clarification (or if you have other questions), let me know.

Different gels, Powergel, Gu, Cliffshots are energy food. Mostly carbs to help you out. I take one about every 50 minutes. Some take after 30 minutes of running, some don't consume any the entire marathon.

They had Powerade and water every 2 miles for the first while and then after the first half it seemed almost every mile and a half until the end. There were bananas and oranges, gels and chocolate kisses :confused3 . Not very appetizing after 24 miles.

I took my gels and a camera, others carry a cellphone and some body glide. Others will add their favorites.

And whats this about tracking on the web? You could have friends and family track you along the course.

There were timing pads along the course, at the start, 10 mile, 13.1, 20? and the finish. They could receive a text message or email with your name and the times you crossed those pads.

I just wanted to brag about being tough today!!!! I'm a total sissy when it comes to going to the dentist and this morning i had gum surgery!! Little, but still sx. just the same. Anyway, after coming home and posting some incoherent post, i took a nap and then indulged in McD. I felt good enough to run to the bike shop (3.75 miles) w/ a backpack that contained my bike shoes and helmet. I then paid for my mt. bike repairs and rode home a different route of about 5 miles (little distance, but monster hill). Upon getting home, Phil wanted to kayak so we did about 3 1/2 miles in the water. Now I'm exhausted, but I sure pulled the day out of the can!!!
Don't worry, I'm not going to break into a verse of "eye of the tiger" or anything!!

I think my knee is a little sore as this was my first post 26.2 mile training run run!

Dave - great pic! Glad you posted it!

Has anyone noticed I use an excessive amount of "!!!!!!"?

Melissa: WAY to go!!! :cool1: I'm impressed...gum surgery is the pits, you've definitely got the EYE of the tiger! :rotfl:

Dave: OMG...your girls are sooo adorable! I love seeing everyone's pics. I should try to post one of me and the girls. Maybe tomorrow! It's nice to put faces to the names! :sunny:

Sunny - The elevation profile looks much more inpressive than it is. If you look at the way the graph is set up, the miles are very close together and the elevation is marked by 100 ft. intervals. It was really gently rolling but it was clearly not flat!! I would guess that applefest is much more hilly. The hogeye run in "fatville" is very hilly. I'll have to try to post that elev. chart sometime so you can check it out!

Amy - Thanks!! I'm pretty much planning on crashing now!!! I think I might be more like "eye of the Tigger!"

I could not do my run today . I am too sore from yesterdays stregthen. I am supposed to cross train tomorrow, I think I will skip that and do todays run instead. I will also be more careful on how hard I push myself--it is no good if I am worthless the next day!

... It is literally the gasping for breath that is forcing me to keep my jogging intervals short. What can I do to improve this? I am seeing my treating cardiologist in a couple of weeks (can't wait to show him my Donald medal!) and will ask him, but I am hoping someone here might have some advice.
Cam, using the same "seek medical advice disclaimer" everyone has suggested. I want to respond similar to Helen's response. Also everyone else who said to keep at it is good too. I did notice a significant difference when I used my breathing technique learned from the Winsor Pilates dvd that I was using. Also, I hit the pool and started to learn to do some laps and breathing with the crawl stroke. In the pool I tried to take a couple of arm cycles with the breathing to stretch out my in and out breaths instead of breathing with every stroke. It is amazing how all this helped and I didn't have to do it too much. I just learned to incorporate steady in and out with my running pace.

Sorry I'm not caught up with any other reading just yet. I did want to respond with what I discovered for myself on the breathing though...
back to more reading. Sheesh it's busy here.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions regarding the Garmin. I have to 201, but I Haven't used it yet due to the cold, windy weather in Chicago and the facts that I am working nights: 7pm to 7am this month.

Any suggestions on a heart monitor?

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

OK, I feel better after taking a rest day. I'm playing around with posting pictures some more, and I think I have it figured out. Now that I have this figured out I'll get back to posting about my training. I'm sure people don't want this thread filled with pictures of my family.

Here's another picture of my princesses DD8 princess: and DD5 princess:.

Kevin - I am really thinking of running the CRIM 10 miler in Flint, MI as a training run this year. Any chance you would be there too? I did my PhD work at the UofM, and my BIL is still in Ann Arbor so it would be fun for me to come back to Michigan to run it. About 10 years ago, when I was in grad school, I used the CRIM 10 miler as my essentive to start my 2nd phase of running. It would be exciting for me to use it again as I start the 3rd phase of running in my life.

Once again I am seeking the advice of the running group for information on running stuff: Has anyone bought the new Garmin Forerunners? How do they compare? Is it worth it?

Magslite: you still doing the Sharmrock Shuffle?

Celeste - yes, I am still doing it. March 19th. It will be my first event. I hope it isn't too cold.

Wow nights - that's tough. I could never do it. These 12 hour days are rough enough. I am worthless when i get home.

I am glad you are still lurking. I had been thinking about you.

Off to work....

More questions on the WDW marathon and marathon general:
What exactly is gel? What does it taste like? When should it be used?
gel is like an energy drink in gel form. kinda like nasty pudding. tri different flavers and brands out on your training runs to see what you like best. They provide quick energy!
What sort of food do they provide on course? How often?
WDW is the best race for food and drinks along the course. There are like 22 stations! That is AWESOME!
What do you bring with you when you are running a marathon?
Everything... :rotfl2: no, JK! I have a belt pack with gatoraid, my phone, the gels I like, and a camra. Some people carry nothing. Really at WDW, you could run it without a pack, I gave mine to my scream team at mile 18.
Kevin, you refer to in your race report that the course splits and then rejoins...huh?
There are 2 starts and they join up around mile 3. On the smallest road in WDW!
What is team in training? is it the same as TNT?
Yes..don't know much about this except they wear purple.
How often are toilets (or portipotties) located on course?
Compared to other races there are ALOT! Lots at the start and along the course.
What exactly do those numbers mean when you refer to pacing? (ie 5/1, or 4:15 group)
5/1 is normally run 5 min walk 1 min. the 4:15 group is the pace group you would be with to finish you in 4 hours and 15 min.

Hope this helped!

That is AWESOME! You will be FLYING at Goofy!

Holy cow! You don't check the Wish board for a week and there are like 10 pages!! I'm not even going to pretend that I read all the posts, I'll have to catch up later. :teeth:

So, I ran outside for the first time since the marathon last night. I don't want to be over the top or a drama queen, but the only word I could think of to describe my run was glorious. It was absolutely glorious to be outside and not trapped on a treadmill staring at the cement wall in the basement. I won't lie and say it was a piece of cake, I had forgotten how much pounding your legs take on the road as opposed to a treadmill belt, but it was still wonderful. I ended up running 3.69 miles, with an average of 10:51, I haven't reset my Garmin for split times, so I don't know my time for each mile. I happened to glance down at 1 mile and saw that it was 10:39, but that's the only one I saw. Oh, and good news, at least for me, Stephen and I aren't running the Country Music 1/2 anymore, instead we are running the Flying Pig 1/2 marathon on May 7th. I am very excited about that, I've heard great things about the Pig, plus I can get excited about it because the marathon means something to me because it's in Cincinnati. When I was reading the course description of the CMM, it meant nothing to me--it was just a bunch of streets, I am a very visual thinker and not being able to visualize the course was a downer. But with the Pig, I know all the streets and I can visualize the course. Plus I've run a part of the course when I did the Thanksgiving Day 10K and I think I am running the Heart Mini Marathon (15K) on the 26th, which is downtown and the course is part of the Pig. And with the marathon being in Cincinnati, my parents and Stephen's parents can come and cheer us on. Hopefully with the weather warming up and being excited about the Pig, I can pull myself out of this funk I'm in!! pixiedust:

Christa--I love your house!! It's beautiful. How in the world do you take care of your family, train for various marathon and triathlons and take care of that house?? You are super woman!! :hyper:

Jodi--You are rocking!! Great job! :thumbsup2

Dave--Your girls are beautiful! I thought about you last night toward the end of my run when my shins were a little tender from being outside. Glad you are feeling better.

Okay, that's all I skimmed, sorry I can't say hi to everyone else. I'll read the thread and be back to talk (lucky you!! ), but for the time being  to everyone! Our little group isn't quite so little anymore! Oh, and from last week, I'm 27.

Good morning, everyone!
Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions about improving breathing capacity. Thank you, Lily, for sharing your experience with swimming, but seriously, there is no way I am putting on a bathing suit at the Y where I am constantly running into people I know!
Dave -- Your princesses are absolute cuties! :grouphug: Glad to see you've mastered the fine art of posting pix! Isn't it fun?

I can't believe my surprise trip is 4 weeks from tomorrow. I am thinking I may actually aspire to go wogging at OKW while I am there. I am sure I can talk DS12 into going with me. Of course, he is a cross-country runner and his legs are getting longer every day, so I will have to tell him to take it easy on old mom, but it will be fun!

Can anyone tell me about trail runs? I would like to do a trail run race in the summer....sounds fun. Would I need special sneakers? How many days a week would I need to train on trails? I think there are actually good trails right off my neighborhood...so I don't think it would be too hard to find a place to run. I'd love to hear from anyone has tried this before :thumbsup2 .

THANKS! amy

Amy - I do some trail running. I did that 50k (31.7) miles last month. I have had the worst time finding trail shoes that i really like. I did get a pair for the 50k that were good, but by the end, I felt like the soles were too flimsey and the rocks were really poking my feet. I got the same brand as i generally run in (asics) I have about 1000 pairs in search of the perfect one. It is really b/c I only got fitted for running shoes and not trail shoes. I keep ordering discount ones off the internet. I'll bet that you could find a good pair at your running store where you got your shoes. I just alternate trail and road. We have a gravel road/ trail loop near my house that i do often. It is still good training for the road and it helps build the muscles that i use for staibility on the trail.

I really think the only difference in the trail shoes is that they are more durable and more stable. I actually did a 21 mile trail run in my normal shoes and i was fine. I think it just tears them up more quickly!

I'm training for a 50 mile trail run on April 22!!!! I'm going to die!!!!

If you love being in hte woods, you'll probably fall in love w/ the trails. Also, I find the trail races are much more fun b/c the people are very laid back and friendly and many of the races I have done have been free!!!! (Plus you still get food) As a general rule though, you carry your own water and food and hope to have some type of aid (maybe food but probably just a water jug) every 5 miles. Some races let you have drop bags so that you don't have to carry as much. For the 50 miler, I'm going to put a bigger pair of shoes and a clean pair of socks in addition to food in a drop bag!

Keep me posted on your trail progress. (Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, for me i t is much slower on the trails. I train at about 10-11mpm pace on the road and generally race at about 13.5mpm on the trail! Good luck and have fun getting dirty.
