Wk of Feb 26--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Wow! It sounds like everyone is doing great! I wish I could say the same. I started out on my 8 mile LW twice on Saturday, and both times got distracted with things that were going on in the house. I love the convenience of my own TM, but it was just so hard to focus, so I tried again Sunday and got in 4.5 miles, but I really struggled at a 17 min pace. Uggh! Walking should not be so hard.

The only bright spot was today when I went in for a routine physical - after listening to my heart the doctor asked if I exercised regularly, and when I said I was a walker, she replied that she thought so...my resting heart rate was excellent.

Thankfully tomorrow is another day, and hopefully things will be easier.

Christy...good luck on your 3 miles! Are you officially training for Minnie now?

...

I added a new link on the first post for cross-training stuff you can do at home. I'm not good at anything that requires me getting out of the house, so I'm hoping to incorporate some of this stuff when I start training for Minnie next week.
http://acefitness.com/getfit/freeexercise.aspx

Good training everyone!

Yes I am and I am really excited. I really did not train when I did the half in 2005 and for the Minnie I want to really "do it". My DH is training for an agility test at work and it really has been a great push watching him run on the treadmill everyday.

Thanks for the link, I ordered an Urban Rebounder today for my cross training days. But it won't be here for my cross training day on Wednesday.

Christy

Once again I am seeking the advice of the running group for information on running stuff: Has anyone bought the new Garmin Forerunners? How do they compare? Is it worth it?

Magslite: you still doing the Sharmrock Shuffle?

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Sunny - IC? :confused3 Maybe you need to give yourself some more rest days. Sounds like your body might be running down a little bit. Maybe your muscles are a little exhausted? Don't forget to listen to your body, and give yourself a break if you need it. You are pretty hard on yourself.

Hey TiffJ - how do you know this? Or are you just saying that when SW does their DINGs tomorrow you hope you'll be able to get a flight to Orlando?
Dave - SW sent an e-mail out yesterday indicating that today was DING's first birthday and to celebrate they would have blowout DING fares. I have had my computer on since 4:00 a.m. when I woke up but nothing yet...

Christa - Best of luck on your first tri!! Your girls are gorgeous :)

TiffJ- I am planning on cancelling the Candy Cane Inn because I have a reservation at the Park Vue Inn for $66/nt for the first two nights and $56/nt for the second two nights. Great reviews on tripadvisor and is not any further than Candy Cane to DL. I have been to DL before, so I am familiar with the area. I will hold onto the reservation for a while longer in case I change my mind :confused3

Great 4 mile run this a.m. at a 9min/mi pace. I am trying to stick to the Hal Higdon 15K training plan for the Minnie.

Good morning, everyone! Decided to come here for advice on a ahem, running-related issue, but the fun stuff first! Catching up with everyone or almost everyone, I hope!

Heather -- Please be careful on your bike rides. I wish you weren't doing that alone. Be sure to keep a cell phone with you so you can call for assistance if you need it.

Lily -- Any word from your boss yet?

Judy -- CONGRATULATIONS on your bonus! How awesome is that!?!?!??! I am so glad that you don't have to worry about that aspect of your trip at all. Very very cool!

Christa -- Those pictures are wonderful. And somehow it doesnt' surprise me that you and Bree make friends whereever you go. And all 3 of your babies are beautiful!

Jen -- So glad to have you here. This group is very energy-and enthusiasm-sustaining. I think you will find that the passion for becoming more fit is contagious. So, settle in and enjoy! :surfweb: Of course, if you have to print out the posts to read (like Judy) so that it looks like you are doing something work-related, take some advice from me -- don't print it on a shared printer! :coffee:

Amy -- I know a lot of people have chimed in on the downhill question, but I can tell you that my doctor (who is the director of sports medicine at a local univ.) said you actually engage a different set of muscles as you run downhill and that it requires balance and core strength to maintain control. So, there's my $.02 or maybe I should say $10 (my co-pay on that visit :) )

Melissa-- What a wonderful picture! Nice to see that gorgeous hair! Seriously, I may have missed it, but was it cold enough (in Arkansas!) to run in a hat? It wasn't a Sunny-I-May-Decide-I-Need-Some-Cash-for-Sustenance-While-I'm-Out-Running kind of hat, was it?

Kevin -- Can't wait to read your marathon weekend report. So glad to see you posting here.

Hi, Dave! You realize, don't you that my image of you keeps getting more and more heroic -- snuggling with your DW! :goodvibes Being such a great daddy to your princess: princess: and STILL finding time to train (oh, and work, too!)

monte -- awesome pace! :cool1:

Hi, Carrie! Great pace and to sustain that for 4 miles is awesome! You GO, girl! :thumbsup2

Sunny -- Don't worry, sweetie. It WILL get better. I am glad to know that deep down you know that. After all, you have pulled many of us out of many a funks over time. I think you are going to have to appreciate the fact that you did all that lifting and you can't do everything well in one day. Get over it! ;) I'll keep an eye open for your IC but maybe she just knew you needed a little break. Instead, we will be your :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: and send lots of pixiedust: and :goodvibes that by the time 3/12 rolls around you will be "into" running again.

Mel -- Awesome pace! And on a weeknight! I'm impressed! How thoughtful of DH not to let you worry about driving or walking. What a sweetie!

Dena -- I am with Mel. I couldn't do C25K either. I remember coming here so discouraged about that and the great advice I got was to do what was comfortable and to push that comfort zone a bit. I finally came to the conclusion that what I had to do was train to train for a while and then I started the MfM plan late September or early October. That worked for me so well.

Pat -- So nice to see you posting. Miss you! I hope your training is going well for Ohio. Wish I were going to share that experience with you guys! :(

Okay, so here is my question. Many of you know I had a very serious heart condition for almost 10 years, that was cured in January 2005. One of the symptoms of that condition was constant breathlessness and a lack of oxygen in my blood. Of course, all of that is zillions of times better than it was, but I can't quite figure out why I still don't seem to be able to sustain a jog very long and it is obviously something to do with the breathing. I mean, it's not my muscles -- my legs aren't screaming for me to stop or slow down or anything like that. It is literally the gasping for breath that is forcing me to keep my jogging intervals short. What can I do to improve this? I am seeing my treating cardiologist in a couple of weeks (can't wait to show him my Donald medal!) and will ask him, but I am hoping someone here might have some advice.

The IC was born on July 16, 2005. Here is the post that explains. In the post she was originally called the lunatic commando and then became the internal commando (IC)

The Brain Split Theory

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOday was my first 18miler. I woke up at 4:22AM, but laid in bed unti the alarm went off at 4:55. A quick chug of protein powder/crystal lite, greased up and dressed I was out the door by 5:18 and on the bike path by 5:28. (I have NEVER been a morning person in my whole life). I started super slow, my first mile was 12:00, second was 11:00 then settled into a 10:00 pace pretty much throughout. I stopped at Starbucks at my 6th mile for a potty/coffee break. The only other stop was at mile 14 to fill water bottles and mix my powdered gaterade stuff. My overall time was 201 minutes, my actual running time was 186 minutes minus the stops. I felt like I could have made 20 if I had set the Commando to do it.

This brings me to my Brain Split Theory. Somewhere around mile 14 I started questioning why I am doing this. It seemed reasonable when I set out, but now I just want it to stop. But my feet kept going. I had alot of time to ponder (3+ hours in my head while my feet moved). I came to the conclusion that at the onset of the run there is a peculiar split that takes place in the brain. Some portion I'll call the Lunatic Commando gets a direct order to run X miles no matter what. The rest of the brain (the conscious Me) doesn't have any say after this directive is set. The Me isn't really even aware that such a meeting took place, not until Me wants to stop. Once I came to this theory I started searched for that Lunatic Commando. I wanted to SHUT HER DOWN. But alas, she is clever and eluded me. So I settled myself in for the last 4 miles without quipping. I noticed I had shoe puddles and decided that was probably what sent me out searching for the Commando. I swear she's crazy. If I gave her the directive to go a 100 miles she'd probably kill me trying.

But the good news is I finished, resumed command and have very little soreness to remind me I went 18 miles this morning.

Never underestimate the power of the Commando.

Hi gang...wow I had a lot of catching up to do on this thread! :teeth:

I'm not sure if I reported my XT day was yesterday. I just did 60 minutes of cardio kickboxing. It was probably one of the hardest classes I've taken a while....however....I personally felt the best I've ever felt in this class. My HR was good, I didn't get overly winded and I finished strong. Wish he did more strength training but we worked the abs seriously and did some butt/leg work which is always good. We only did 40 push-ups which is light on the arms...maybe it was 60 not sure but we normally do way more.

'kay nuff of my boring XT stuff. I have a 30 minute run to get in today...and of course it's bitter bitter cold and breezy. I CAN'T WAIT FOR SPRING!!!! Have I mentioned that the cold....no it's more than cold.....the FRIGID temps are starting to get to me?! I need to get inspired for this run. Fortunately I can go later in the afternoon when it may warm up a bit. Brrrrrrrrrrrr.....

Sunny: You may just need warm weather to inspire you. As you can tell from my rant above, I really am right into the winter blahs this week. The cold temps you guys have been experiencing are worse than here in NJ. I think some :sunny: and warmth will make a huge difference. I'm not an expert, but I bet that you'll see a big difference once we start getting into the 50's regularly! :thumbsup2

Christa: Adorable pic of your girls and the jrt! I wish I had a little running buddy. For a moment it was even fun running with the pit bulls....then I remembered they were PIT BULLS :scared: ! But hey....they may be better than the black bears who will be coming out of hibernation and I will be guaranteed to see them weekly on my runs  .

Carrie: Sounds like you had a great run!!! :thumbsup2 Even in those chilly temps! I'm so glad you're getting back pain free!

Sunny, yes the 72,000 pounds of weight for an hour would probably have something to do with your stonker run! :lmao: I can't believe you keep those stats, I can barely count to 15 for my reps! :rotfl2:

Colleen-- the Y has the machines wired to keep track for you! I'd never do all that math in my head :lmao:

Christa-- your girls are beautiful (and Zoe is a doll). I'm so glad everyone is posting pics, its so fun! :goodvibes

Cam-- I don't have any advice or insight on your breathing. I'm glad you'll be seeing your dr soon.

Amy-- I always go through a funk in February. I know you are right, as Spring approaches I should be back in the game.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes :grouphug:

Sunny

Hey Sara, good to hear from you! Is your family going out to Disneyland for the half? I am still contemplating the DL half. Are you waiting for DING fares for both that one and the Minnie? OK, I know this is a silly question, but what city do you fly into for the DL half?

Carrie, thanks for the encouragement. I am a little depressed because my weight has been up and down, up and down since the marathon. Argg!! Just can't control my appetite. I did an 8 miler on Sunday and I guess I didn't fuel correctly after the run and just got sick, sweating, faint, nausea, chills, repeat... I downed a bowl of oatmeal and then felt better, but I am up 4 pounds in the last few days. I body is so funny, I just can't seem to get this under control.

Colleen

Colleeen - I've been struggling a bit with weight lately too. I did really well from November until I got back and did really well until first week or so in Feb and now I'm having a a hard time. I think I've been getting back into the caffeine habit too much again and not drinking enough water. That will make me fluctuate a lot. For me, I have also not been doign teh XT like I need to. Last year I had to completely focus on the running. I think this year I need to spend more time on teh nutrition. We'll get there!

Cam - OK, I'm worried. Do not push yourself. You are on the TM, right? If you were outside, I'd blame it on the ocld making it hard on teh cardiovascular system, but don't know with your being inside. Take it easy until you see the doc!

Heather - Yikes! I missed your post and wondered what everyone was talking about. Be careful! That osunds liek an awfully busy road. You need to make it to that family reunion this year! BTW, when is that?

Amy - Yes, to run in good weather again. sigh.... I'm not holding my breath, because last year end of March we had a horrible storm (and dh crashed my truck on the wet ice). I'd love an early spring, but I'm afraid this winter has been too mild for that. then again, December was awful! :wizard: for spring to come soon.

hey guys! ok -- i'm ready to register :)

what pace/time did you all put for corral purposes??

Has anyone ever vacationed at the DVC Hilton Head Island? Is it possible for a person to just pay for a room or would I need to purchase points from someone?

I am trying to plan a June trip to the beach, is it too late for HHI?

Colleen

Cam: Sorry I missed your post. I don't know....it would seem that the breathlessness should gradually get better. How long can you sustain a jog before you start to feel so winded you can't talk? It may be simple as working on your breathing technique? But just in case I wouldn't push yourself until the doc can give you an explanation. (((HUGS)))

Oh Mom - Very cool!!!! DH and I just guesstimated our time. There's a pacing calculator on Mel's first post of the training thread. That will help some, but your pace will improve before the race too. Dh and I planned for 12:30s for the full last year (5:30 time) and we're hoping for 5 hours this time.

Colleen - I think you can just pay cash for the Inn Rooms there. It may be gettign a little late in the game, though. I'd call soon!

Cam - I had another thought. This may be normal. Looking back to last year, I did feel that my breathing held me back for a while. So this may be normal prgress. I know I always used the walks in my r/w's to catch my breath. Do you caoncentrate on making your cest go out instead of in when you breath, so that you are expading your lung capacity? You may want to practive that. I still would not push until you talk to the doc, though.

Wow, so much to catch up on since last night!

Sunny-- pixiedust: If it helps, i hate running too. :) I'm sure the weight lifting prior to your run had something to do with your performance. That said, if you are still dragging, perhaps taking a week or two off after your half will light your fire again?? BTW- I checked out your website for the first time last night... VERY inspiring. Just...wow!

Cam-- Boy oh boy is that a question for your doctor. My first thought was "Have you ever been treated for exersice induced asthma," but again, that's something your doc can walk you through. Thinking about you

ohMom-- Glad to hear of your impending registration. I put my marathon finishing time from this year in for next year. I don't expect to match that time running the Goofy or anything, but I figure it'll put me in a closer corral to the start, particularly for the half.

I feel like I am starting to fight a bit of a cold, so I'm trying to decide on a workout plan for today. The next two weeks are completely upside down for me, so I should probably plan at least that far out....

Well, back to work-
Happy training all!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

Colleen- I think Cam goes there every year for Thanksgiving, so she would be a good one to ask. Although, I think she uses DVC points. I'm sure they'd be willing to take cash too :teeth: We are flying into John Wayne/Orange County airport. Much smaller than LAX and closer to DL. I was lucky & mom had frequent flyer miles we used. Still waiting on a DING for the Minnie though.
Please come to DL! You need that castle medal :)

Heather-be careful! Those people obviously care nothing about the safety of others.

Sunny-I loved your story about LC. :rotfl: I agree with others, this winter weather is getting me in a funk also. Take a day off, IC will return. We are supposed to have temps in the upper 60's low 70's this week! Woo hoo, back to training outside again.

I heard a term on another board that I love & I think applies to alot of us "Adult Onset Athlete"

Amy-WTG- that kickboxing will kick your booty into shape quick :thumbsup2

Celeste- I dont know about the new ones, I have the Forerunner 201 & love it.

Dave-I agree with Cam, what a good dad & husband you are :worship:

Cam-I have no advise, just be careful!!!! We want you healthy for Minnie.

I swam 600 yds this a.m. It is getting sooooo much better. I did the full 200 yds (what my tri is) with minimal stops for breath.

The DING sale today only goes thru 4/30 :crazy2:

Hey guys! This is supposed to be a mt. biking day, but I'm sitting in bed w/ a soft blanket. I had a bunch of dental stuff done this morming. I'm still bleeding and my face is huge! BUMMER. I'm going to try tosleep it off, but I odn't kow fi that is going to work!

Cam - It was a "It's-raining-really-hard-so -I'd-better-keep-my-mop-dry" kind of hat :rotfl:
I don't know about the breathing thing. I think some heavy breathing is normal and it is a different type and level of cardio work that you are doing.

Christa - You girls are so adorable! I've really enjoyed your pictures. They get me excited about seeing you guys next jan!! Maybe you can get you friend from your pit stop to come a volunteer at one of the aid stations! :rotfl2:

Colleen- DH and I are going to DL for the 1/2. We will be using two free Southwest tickets, so I will be flying into the most expensive airport :rotfl2: , which would be Orange County (SNA). Other options are Los Angeles (LAX), Ontario (ONT) and Burbank (BUR). I already got an awesome DING fare for the Minnie back on 1/27. For both DH and I the roundtrip TOTAL was $230.00. YEAH!! We'll fly in late Friday and out early Monday. I have to wait for the Southwest schedule to come out for September before I can book for the 1/2. Also, take comfort in the fact that I continue to struggle with my weight also. Such a monkey on my back. I hope to see you at either the Minnie or in DL :)
