Wk of Feb 26--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I don't have much time to post, but I have the same question as Dave. Tif, how's that? ...and it is GREAT news about the hotel manager. That is worth shouting about for sure.

Couldn't get to the boss to ask today, so my mystery continues. If I have to stall much longer my practical spending self will enter and I will have to say I cannot justify the expense. I need a roommate and ding fare or no selfish thought about going and leaving everyone else behind.

MelR, good to hear of your race. Great "traiing" time.

Who is the keeper of the WISH Team Dictionary. RFT! like it! That's me most of the time.

Judy, "old one" :sunny: so Mist may never get over things? That is so sad. ...and Yay! for the trip dollars.

Will try for TM b4 everyone gets in the space tonight here. Otherwise it will be a late event on it for me as I wait for my area to clear and my couch potato people to clear the area...Brrrrr here.

Now I have a training question for you experts :teeth: . Here's the deal, my running courses are all hilly. Lots of ups and downs with very few flats. Today somebody told me that I'm not really accomplishing anything with all the down-hills during my run. Do you guys think that's the case? Since I'm essentially running a loop around my neighborhood it stands to reason that all the downhills have to be counter balanced with equal distance in uphill. It's just that the ups at times are more of a slow and steady climb as opposed to a steep hill (although I have a few of those here as well). The downhills do feel soooo easy to me, so maybe they aren't helpful in my training. Not that there's much I can do about it. But I thought I'd get your input! THanks!
AllI need to ask is "has this person ever run long before"? I beg to differ with the down hills not helping. If you ever run Pike's Peak you will know what I am saying. The 1st half is up a mountain..the second is down....the down hurts worse. I also found this to be true in Charlotte Marathon. Not kidding, the whole course was uphill until the last 2 miles...I thought O boy...down hills..not the case, my time suffered b/c of the different mussels I had to use for 2 miles of down. All running counts! :goodvibes

Melissa - :cool1: :cool1: So proud of you. But Ft Worth hilly? :confused3 Where did you run there? I guess I compare it to Charlotte. I did not ever think it was hilly...but I never ran there. I wish we could have ran together!

Sunny so glad to hear from you...While I was running today I thought about you. I know you will do GREAT on your 1/2....I would not be surprised if you got under 2 hours. :thumbsup2 I also "own" several neighborhoods in Charlotte. Bree and I got some looks taking pics Friday. These snooty girls passed us and acted like they could run faster than us. I told Bree they would not be in front of us for long, but then they turned. I AM THE EVIL QUEEN! No, I just don't like snooty!
Here are some more pix of "my houses":

Hey start wishing pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: ...I do my 1st tri in 12 days and I am EXCITED! I need to take pixs of my bike!

Christa....YEAH more pics! I love the pics. You guys are too cute! And pixiedust: for your first Tri! :worship: I am so impressed! I'm sure you'll do great!

Christa -i think they would be considered gently rolling, with maybe one short steep one. I'll see if i can link the elevation profile. as for where we ran, i have no idea. it started and ended in downtown. we ran through the botanical garden and some other city park. that was on a trail and it was kind of hilly. we were also in some residential areas that were rolling.

You sure you don't want to come in 4 weeks to do hogeye???? I think phil is going to do it w/ me and EC's husband is too. EC is going to run the 1/2 to place and then come back and get us. I have a plan of making funny faces every time there is a photographer! It really is hilly

OK.... Here is the elev profile (not necessarily the 3500 ft gain of the 50k or anything to compare w/ the hills in your photos, but...)

Hey everyone. After one day of visiting this thread, I have decided to stay because you all are SO NICE!!! And helpful. You will never believe how much this rookie has learned just by reading your chitter chatter.

I am doing a 13 week regimine that will get me to a 10K level. Tho I have a feeling it will take me more than 13 weeks because I had to miss a week already. But after reading the book (Running for Beginners - or something like that), it pushed more for just concentrating on running. I am gathering from the posts here, that I should also be adding in way more cross training. I have kind of been lax on cross training the last month, but plan to do that tonight instead.

Currently I am still doing the walk/jog training... but I tell ya, one day I will be a runner!!!! Hopefully BEFORE the 1/2 Marathon!!! I am planning to runa 5 K in May and maybe a 10K this fall for real race practice. And if anything else comes along, I may do those also. This thrill of competing is getting to me. Tho I am not a winner, just a finisher!!

Have a great night all!!!

Evening all!

Sunny-- Swimming and running are two totally different beasts, aren't they?!? Ask away if you have any questions.

Judy/AmyBeth-- Hooooooooooold on a sec. "It's OK because Kevin said so?!?!?" LOL, I'm going to get in to trouble. For what it's worth, when MFM states not to mess around with the program, I took it as: "If you miss a day, you can't go back and try and do it or try to pack it into a rest day." As long as you are getting the miles/steps in, you should be fine.

Mel-- Those elevation changes hurt my quads just looking at them. :crazy2:

Jen-- Welcome once again. I think the reason you see a lot of cross training talk on the boards these days is several fold: First, it's just plain a good idea to help prevent injury and alieviate boredom. Second, being this far out from Disney for most of us, many people are in the process of "training to train," getting themselves into better physical condition prior to the start of "real training," where things like dieting are tough to do. Third, you have some much braver folks than I am doing triathlons and such. Anything you are doing right now in terms of exersice is good, and your 13 week 10K program sounds like a good idea.

I just got back from my 2.5 mile tempo run today (done outside...yes!) and finished in 21:12 (8:29/mile pace). Ouch. :faint: Pace is fantastic, but it was HARD.

Off to stretch and hydrate-
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

You and me both!!! :thumbsup2

I am a beginner too. I am about 10weeks into this and it has been a rough go of it here and there. Some knee and hip pain that I didn't plan on. ;)

Anyway I upped my cross training hoping to build more muscle to support me in my running. I also shortened my r/w intervals so that I was running 3 walking 2.

One day will be a runner too!!!

Maggie

Thought I'd post a race pic from this weekend. Sadly, I have none from the race, so in honor of Amy, I'll post the post-race sushi dinner pic. The pic is of me, On-yee, and Sarah (EC, external commando)

Cam - LOOK!!!! No hat!!!! I did run in one though

Stretch and Strengthen Done!!

Maggie and Jen-- I am right there with you, I have never been a runner, but I would really like to be.

I love all the pictures, it really makes the thread more fun!

Tomorrows task--3 mile "run". My plan is to run 3 mins walk 2 mins until I am done.

Christy

Greetings Everyone:

Whew, it is getting hard to keep up with all the posts. I actually had to work today which means I couldn't read and post. What the?!?

OK, here's my training today. I upped my mileage to 3.0 miles on the treadmill. I did it in 42 min or 14 mpm pace. However the thing I felt good about was I ran 0.5 mile at a 12 mpm pace (5.0 on the TM). My shin felt OK. I did a lot of stretching and strengthening exercises afterwards.

OK, off to snuggle with DW.

Here I am! Not a runner runner! What's that? Well, if you are a "runner" my time is a walk. If you are me, my time when I am moving is a run! So it's what it is for all of us whatever the speed. You fast rabbits, and me the turtle wogging my way steadily through. (Or I should say me the penquin--cuz that really is what I guess I am most). I don't consider myself a beginner any longer, but I am not fast either. It's ok. (Did any of this make any sense at all?)
:confused3 :rotfl2:

Mel, love the picture. That graph is overwhelming to me. I don't think I could stay the course for that. I do have a place that I use for the hill work portion but did not do that every week last summer. At most I might have done a couple times 2x in a week, but mostly my hill one time/week faster training run one time/week and lrs on weekend. My knees didn't hold to kindly to too many hills in my week's training.

Christa, love your pics, "your turf" is lovely.

Kevin, Yay! for outside running.

Haven't got my TM in yet. Hate that thing...must wait for the room.

You inspire me everyone. I should get to the pics I have sitting around to share with everyone.

Exercise for this week, (Dave--you are charged with still trying to do the alphabet :lmao: ): This one will strengthen the ankles. I got it from Runners World Mag last year. It is one leg balance, no balance board needed. Stand on one leg for time. Easy you might think. The challenge, close your eyes and try to remain upright for at least 30 secs. Tip: stand in a doorway so you don't have to worry about falling over--it's not as easy as it sounds at first. Have fun!

OK, I did 4 tonight. It was cold and windy. Not horrible, but not fun. I was about an hour behind Kevin in temp and pace. lol.

I kept intending to slow down, was mad at dh for going so fast, but I only slowed down a little;

Mile 1 - 10:52
Mile 2 - 11:0x
Mile 3 - 10:4x
Mile 4 - 10:16

Forgive the x's. Too lazy to get Garmin adn be exact. Anyway, I was crusin' and averaged a 10:44. What's up with that? Darn aliens!

Jen117 - Glad you feel at home. WHat do you mean chitter chatter? We post nothing but all important training info here! rotfl!

MelR - Great pic!

I have a confession to make:

I hate running.

I despise it.

If I never run another mile it will be too soon
.

Good night,
Sunny

PS please send PD my way as I seem to be in need of a slight attitude adjustment.

ok, I'm back. I'll try not to be so melo-dramatic this time.

I had yet another STONKER. Well, I'm not sure that really is the term I'm looking for. I ran 5.8 miles in 63 minutes with .25 mile walks about every .75 - 1.25 miles. None of it was fun. Nothing was inspiring. Every now and then I'd think the run was coming to me but it never did. I don't know how much is physical and how much is mental. I kept trying to figure out if I forced myself could I actually go x miles? But my heart rate was really high considering I should have been working way below my ability so I don't know if I really could have pushed. Its funny, I found myself cursing this upcoming half (March 12) and then realizing this is precisely why I signed up for it! I had a feeling I might be in this state of mind come February.

I did my run after doing an hour of weight lifting so that probably had something to do with it. But the other three stonkers were under decent conditions (well, except one which was near zero temp running). So I just don't get it.

But the worst part isn't the lack of ability right now. The worst part is not loving it :worried: Where has the love gone? I think my LR has left me :sad2:

And I KNOW my IC has left me. I think she flew south for the winter. So if you southerners see a crazed commando wandering the streets-- you know where to send her! Without her I'm a spineless jelly fish!

Sunny
BTW I lifted 72,000 pounds tonight

2.56 for me tonight at a 13:29 pace (R3/W2). DH has offered to get up at 5am on Sunday and drive me to the start of the half, then come back for me around 9am so I don't have to drive myself home

Carrie...congrats on your successful weeknight run! You and I think alike...I think the LR are mentally easier because I feel like I can get it done faster if I work on the pace. The weeknight set intervals are harder because it's a set time...can't make it go any faster.

Monte...congrats on your TM run! Great pace!

Lily...makes sense! I don't think I'll ever be fast, but I am working on being faster :scratchin

Dave...congrats on your pace! Glad the shin is feeling better!

Christy...good luck on your 3 miles! Are you officially training for Minnie now?

MelR...great photo! Those hills are frightening

Judy...congrats on your bonus! I'm not a rebel, but I messed with the MFM program all the time. If you can't work it into your lifestyle, it's not going to work for you. I changed the Thurs run to Wed and took Thurs as a rest day. On weekends we were out of town, I moved my LR from Sat to Fri. And I did each of the first 9 or 10 weeks twice to build confidence and give me a cushion if I ever needed to miss a run.

Dena...I tried the couch to 5K program last year and got really discouraged because it was too much for me at the time. I ended up doing something like what Helen said. I was walking 4 days weekly and slowly worked my mileage up by about 10% each week.

Sunny...the girls are 10 years apart. DD13 has her birthday in Dec, the wild todd will be 3 tomorrow! Both were born on the 28th :) .

Heather...yikes! Scary bike ride

I added a new link on the first post for cross-training stuff you can do at home. I'm not good at anything that requires me getting out of the house, so I'm hoping to incorporate some of this stuff when I start training for Minnie next week.
http://acefitness.com/getfit/freeexercise.aspx

Good training everyone!

Christa, good luck in your first tri!! Do you have a certain training plan you are using? How long are your distances?

MelR, great job on your run!
I too love seeing everyone's pictures.

Carrie, great pace out there! My garmin is taking some time off, or should I say I am taking some time off too! For some reason, the love has gone south for me too!

Sunny, yes the 72,000 pounds of weight for an hour would probably have something to do with your stonker run! :lmao: I can't believe you keep those stats, I can barely count to 15 for my reps! :rotfl2:

Mel - That link sounds great! I'll have to look at it when it'snot past my bedtime. ;) Great that dh will take you to and from teh race. I'll try to work on getting you some fans. I sent them teh link, but have not talked to them about it.

Sunny!!!!! First, and I think you know that, your body does work much harder when it's cold. Aas I noted in my post, I do not do sub-111 in teh cold (20 - 30 and under). Now, I know the trunning bandit ;) is stronger than I, but cut yourself some slack!! Your IC did not fly south, sh's just outside frozen to teh sidewalk somewhere.

Colleen - Hang in there. I think I'm lucky that I was injured. :confused3 I was so afraid of losing what I had, that it really helped when I got out there again adn nothing hurt!

I think that last year was a challenge adn almost all runs were a challenge to me. This year, (OK teh last week, I could fall soon), anyway, this year I feel like I'm choosing to be out there adn I'm running the pace that I want to. I don't feel pressured to keep up with dh. He will run my pace. I really feel like I'm out there becauase I want to be adn it's making a big differnce. Ok, this tired little runner must head to bed before she spews any more thoughts. ;)

pixiedust: to COlleen adn Sunny!

WTG Monte! Your're getting those steps in and your pace is getting close! It'll get there!

You are a runner! I always run to the mile markers then walk 1 min. I have done this for 4 years and got 4:25 on my last marathon (not to be confused with Goofy :goodvibes ) Remember finishing is winning. If you don't believe me ask my DD5. :thumbsup2

Sunny - I hate running too! :) Did that make you feel better? pixiedust:

Colleen - My training plan? :confused3 Was I suppose to have one...JK..I have to do 6 workouts a week. 2 runs, 2 bike, 2 swims. Need to do weights but no time for that. It is only a sprint tri and I have been told it won't be as hard as Goofy, but I am not sure b/c of the 3 things I have to do.

solo - you were booking! :cool1:

Aren't my babies cute? The JRT is one of my running buddies! :goodvibes Her name is Zoe...just like Bree's dog. :confused3
