Wk of Feb 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

But I'm going to have a VERY difficult time keeping up with you during Minnie. I need to get moving faster....
I wouldn't have pushed so hard if I had not been reading about your intervals to get faster. I am afraid I set my goal, and you;ll keep it and I won't.

Maria - Hurt is bad. Repeat after me: Hurt is bad (hurt is bad) Especially, theis early in traning.

I just got back from the Gym. I did 30 minutes on the TM at a faster pace than I have been... AND IT FELT GREAT. I did 20 minutes straight running at 5.4. It almost felt easy. I sure was sweating when I was done tho! And my brother came in as I was cooling down, so he didn't get to see me running all speedy. I wanted to show off a little.

Judy - Why argue about resting... We must be on the same plan!!!!

Lily - Oh aren't you just the cutest. Now I am joining the hundreds of others that is regretting not placing an order!!!

Carrie - Thanks for the skirt warnings. I definately want my hind end well covered!!!

OK, I am off to get some more water and to actually do some work!

Here's a training question -- I'm not in training for a race until the Half, right now I'm just trying to get into the habit of running. At what point do I stop trying to go as fast as I can in 30 minutes, and start making that 35, then 40, etc.? I realize I need to be able to run for much more than 30 minutes since I'm never going to get to 3 minute miles! I think I'm going to peak soon on the "fastness" factor. Do I just stick with 30 minutes on my two regular runs, and keep adding distance to my LR? I know this is a rookie question, and any advice is greatly accepted!

Maria - I'm hardly the poster child for training properly - I made the mistake of thinking I could just train for a full marathon, and for my fitness level and the amount of time I had, probably the mileage increases were too much. I wound up with a stress fracture in my right ankle so I missed two races I had signed up for (one of which was the Disney half this January :sad1: )

This time I'm doing things differently, by putting a bunch of training programs together, back to back, to slowly build up. It starts off with training for the Minnie 15K, and once that race is completed, I'm training for a half to run in July. After that my full marathon training starts, giving me almost a full year to gradually build up. I would suggest, that since you are doing the "Training to Train" program now, once you get through with that, find a 5K program, or a 10K program to start. Sign up for some local races so that gives you an incentive, and gets you more excited for January. And don't worry about trying to run as fast as you can, just put the miles in - so one week aim for 3 miles for your long run, the next week aim for 4 miles.

I would highly recommend Jeff Galloway's training programs - his programs are nice and long, giving you a good chance to build up, and he really preaches the run/walk methodology. Check out his website.

I hope this helps you a bit - good luck and let us know how it goes!

It sure is hard to keep up with this thread. I was just able to do a quick skim but will try to read through it tonight when my girls are in bed.

Cam - I hope your new shoes work out for you. I normally wear a size 7 1/2 but my running shoes are a size 9.

Lily - I love your new outfit! It looks great on you! I ordered a black gymgirl skirt and a pink top and it came yesterday but I'm not brave enough to model it for everyone.

I took over a month off from exercising after the half marathon to rest my shins. I've been back in training mode for the Minnie for about two weeks now. So far everything is going great - no shin troubles! :)

Training for the half marathon was fun for me because I did almost all of my exercising with my DH/Optimator. We haven't been able to train together this year due to sick kids:sick: , DD's after school activities and DH recent crazy work schedule. He also is alot faster than me.:worship: He runs at an 8:00 min pace while I walk at a 13:40 pace. He's been able to train better for his marathon with us working out at different times. Someday I hope to be able to maintain his speed and distance but it won't be anytime soon! When the ice thaws outside we hope to be able to get outside to run/walk. He has generously offered to walk with me at my pace and count it towards his cross training. I'm so lucky to have such a great DH. :lovestruc

Sorry I haven't read everyone's posts yet. Maybe I can catch up tonight!

Just an FYI - AP rates are now out for May. I made my reservations for the Minnie today!

My advice is to run as fast as you can as infrequently as possible. Perhaps at races, but not even then all the time.

Running hard every day is a guarantee of injury. You stress you body and eventually it will break down. Year ago I trained with a guy who ran at Wichita State, he was really fast, he trained hard all the time, and he got hurt constantly.

Running hard some is good, better than that, great, but you need to pick your spots. If you are running 3 times a week, 1 run should be longish and slow. This builds endurance and doesn't hurt your body. The other 2 runs can be short or medium in length, and in 1 of those runs if you feel like opening it up, do it. The fast part can be done many different ways:

- A bit faster than usual on hills, builds speed and power.

- Intervals of speed over some distance, maybe 1 minute per mile faster than your comfortable training pace, and distances from 200 meters up to 3 miles or longer.

- Fartleks, no not the bean scene from Blazing Saddles, fartlek means "speed play" and it is what kids and young animals do. You run along at your comfortable training pace and you pick a point in front of you and run faster to that point, and then slow down. Run the speed part as fast as you like, recover, then do it again.

There are lots of other methods which you can find in books. My favorites are hill work and intervals on the track. The key is by doing this you build endurance by going long, you build strength, and you build speed.

I would also recommend you stay away from really fast work, a pace that makes you strain, until you have a good base of nice training runs for a few weeks. Going fast right away = muscle pulls.

Then you can put it all together on race day. If you get this just right you'll be pleasantly surprised by your race day performance. A decent goal is 10K or 5K at pace 1 minute per mile faster than your comfortable training pace.

Good luck

Craig

Well, I had a busy lunch hour signing up for races! I am now officially registered for a 10K on St. Patrick's Day (grand prize - win you weight in beer!) and the Calgary Half Marathon.

My company is putting on a corporate fitness challenge March 1 - June 1. You keep track of your activities online for points and you can win prizes. Between the races and the fitness challenge I now have some great incentives to get out there and be active!

I'm hoping to get a run in this evening, then this weekend I'm planning on breaking out of the usual run in the neighborhood to run downtown. There are some great pathways that run alongside the river that cuts through Calgary. They are well cleared of snow and ice, and it will be great to see some beautiful scenery while I'm out.

Congrats to everyone that has been keeping up so well with their training! You guys are definitely an inspiration for me to keep at it.
Jen - great pace!
Carrie - Yes - watch out for the Marathon Girl. I own a ton of Gym Girls, but I got my first Marathon Girl in the mail by the Convert to Skirt program. Yes - the one inch difference is huge!
Also, congratulations on the job Angie! Best of luck as you start up.

By the way, for those of you that are sad about missing the skirt sale, think about the Convert to Skirt program. Send in your old, tatty running shorts and convert them into sassy running skirts at 45% off.

Plus for every pair of shorts you send in, $1 is donated to the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign.:cheer2:

I'm impressed with you taking tae kwon do with your daughter. I guess I'd be forced to do it with mine also. My DD10 is already about 5'1" and mean as a snake. I certainly wouldn't want her to be able to know enough tricks to kick my butt.

You and Dave need to be careful of what you start.

My DS16 is working toward his 3rd degree TKD.

Once we were messing around in the kitchen and before I knew it I felt his toes flick across my check. I never saw it coming.

That was a turning moment in our relationship. :scared1:

First the toes on the check...then the fingers on the credit card....I see how this goes.....

Sorry, Jim! I couldn't resist! :lmao:

Hi everyone. Just a drive by.

I have read all the posts, just I only have a few seconds to stop by. We have just gotten so busy at work....uugghhh don't they know I need to come in and chat with all my WISH friends.

Hope you all have a great day.

Kim

Hey all--I just remembered something I overheard at the gym today--I wanted to go over and tell the guy he was nuts, but I didn't have the guts--and then I wanted to make sure he was the crazy one. So here's what he said--he was giving his daughter some advice about running and told her that she should always lead with her toes (run toe to heel) b/c that's the only way she could prevent shin splints--Okay so am I nuts or is this guy off his rocker?? I've never heard of anything like that. And then I tried to run toe to heel and can't even figure how that's possible. I know some people run on their toes--but that's not the norm is it??? Okay, glad to have that off my chest.

That is actually a method of running. I was reading about it in an old runners world just the other day. I run on my toes so I cannot say he is crazy...I think mine is just genetics tough.

Interesting...I was thinking about what he was saying when I was on the TM this am, but I was afraid if I even tried anything different I might "pull a Carrie" and fall right off!;)

But the reason I really got on here was to tell ya'll that I mailed our Mickey and Minnie race registrations today! WooHoo!! And believe me, there is no backing out now--DH will never spend $270 on something and not do it. So we'll see some of ya'll in May and more in Jan.!!!:cool1: :cool1:

Hi all-another quick drive by post, I will have to catch up more tomorrow!

Got back about an hour ago from Whiteface Mtn. We went skiing all day, and the conditions were great! Mountain was not so crowded which made it even better. My legs are pretty sore now, from all the skiing from the past few days, but I still plan to get back to my running workouts either tomorrow night or friday, depending on what time we get home tomorrow night.

Dave--weather is beautiful here in Lake Placid-no rain, some snow flurries on the mountain today, but not too much.

Sunny--no problem on calling me Laura....my name on my drivers license and other official documents is Laura...my family and friends call me Laurie.....so, I answer to both!

Carrie--I hear you about working different muscles when XC skiing....man was I sore today!!!! Especially my hip flexor muscles. I definetely loved it, only wish I could go again somewhere closer to home....driving 4 and half hours to XC ski just wouldn't be practical!! LOL!

OK, I will catch up with everyone elese tomorrow when I get home...time to head out for dinner and ice skating at the Olympic Oval!

I decided that I was going to take a bit of time tonight and read some DIS and maybe even reply as much as I could before I have to start homework with DS. I read the posts in reply to my posting yesterday and realized what I had been missing – it is all the warmth and truly nice people here on the DIS boards.

Kristi – Thanks for the hugs they are needed and appreciated. By the way, awesome job on the 6 minutes of running – I do think it is a great achievement because you are persistent.

Cam, thanks. The workouts are my saving grace. DW should be getting back to work about 9 or 10 hours a week in a month or so. I will keep you all updated.

Thanks TXAng –all the PD is appreciated.

Krista – hope you didn’t use up all the wizards. Thanks for the PD.

Angie – CONGRATULATIONS!

Lily – Thank you. DW is getting better just continues to get migraines whenever she is exposed to bright light for more than a half-hour or has to read for more than 45 minutes and the nerve damage in her right arm will be around for another year or two according to the neurologist. She is a trooper though and is coping. I miss you all too.

Thank you Dave – How is the training for the Flying Pig going?

Sunny, neither did we but we are making the best of things and the DD and DS are really enjoying not having to go to after school Y camp everyday.

Cecilia – Thanks for the well wishes. She is getting there.

Carrie – Thanks for the PD. You can never get enough of that stuff.

Judy –Thanks for the PD (see above) and thank you for taking on the team coordinators job again.

Well DS is tapping me on the shoulder to get homework done (cartoons or animal planet await after you know). Sorry if I missed anyone.

Got out for a nice run today and I am really hyped up due to feeling the nice 40+ temps, warm sunshine and very little wind during my lunchtime run today. I got out right around 11 AM and was so pumped that I banged out the first mile in 6:40 but then the HR monitor started alarming and I had to pull back. Pulled back the pace but decided to add an additional mile or so – work will wait – and ended up getting in a nice 6.33 miles in 50:23 for a 7:57 pace and I kept the HR below or right at 150 BPM. What’s up with that? I normally top out at around 8:30s.

Good training all.

Sorry, Jim! I couldn't resist! :lmao:

You are so right on!!!!

Thankfully he is the one that won't spend any money. He was in Costa Rica for two summers. We gave him an ATM for money. He never used it.

Now DD12 will buy anything. When she gets older it will be a lot of trouble. :scared1:

Hello Christa

I assume since you are so light and so fast (flattery always works:rolleyes: ) that you strike pretty much on your mid foot and then lift quite a bit off of your toes when you push off. Especially in your marathon efforts. I would be really surprised if your strike was on your toes, then you rocked back a bit, then you lifted off from your toes again.

My visualization from Stephanie's description was the latter. Toes, midfoot, toes again. I cannot imagine that technique wouldn't tear the calfs up since they would be absorbing all the shock of impact. Plus the rock back to the midfoot would shift the forward momentum back, then forward again, which must slow the speed of turnover.

If my opinion of the toe-strike-teaching-father irritated you in any way, my apologies.

Well I have my marathon registration form out and I am completing it. I booked the room for January 9 through 17, 2008, so I'll see you all again early next year.

Please, cool weather, please.

Man, I am so freakin' jealous now!!!
You go, Jen! :woohoo:  :woohoo:

I think my treadmill expermient did me in more than I realized yesterday. I feel sort of like I was hit by a mac truck today, well maybe a small mac truck. Not terrible, just tired, achy, etc. People at work were telling me I looked really bad today, and asking if I was sick. (nice, huh?) So, I skipped today's 2 miles or xt. At least it was an 'easy' day. I have 4.5 on deck for tomorrow and I'd like to attempt the TM experiement again. But I won't if I am not feeling 100% - I'll go back to the track in that case.

I am so jealous of eveyone and their cute running skirts!
But the day I pay $75 for any article of clothing (excluding running shoes)... :scared1:

I got the AP email today too - must call tomorrow to book my room for the Minnie! ::MinnieMo

Kristi - Don't be jealous of me... you have some lightning fast walk/run times. I walk much too slow, so that always brings my time down!

Oh and I am jealous of the skirts too. Let's brood together!!!

Hidee Ho fellow WISHers.
New screen name...same person. I'm Andrew from DJBounce, made a new screen name so I wouldn't get confused for my DW Darcey....but it's still the same old me.

MelR - Great job on the 50K. That's one heck of a distance!

Angie - Fantastic job with destroying your race goal!

Jim - Great PR! :thumbsup2

Kristi - Way to go with your running. The treadclimber looks like it offers more of a challenge than a conventional treadmill.

Mel - A big CONGRATS on passing your exam. In regards to the new WISH wear...is there enough fabric to put our WISH team logo on it?

Carrie - WOW...looks like a reallly cold 5K. Great job on getting out there!

Well, I stop in later to catch up wth you in regards to my training...been using the new treadmill and XT pretty regularly.

Again not enough time to catch up with everyone !! I'm struggling this week but I wanted to tell Kristi1357 - you might also want to check Anthony travel for Minnie Res. We have AP but got PO through Anthony for 115 a night better than AP, I know they are also offering All Star, don't know price!! Getting very excited about Minnie!!

Oh yeah - Jen Way to GO!!!!! That's awesome!
Angie:banana:

Remember...."The most important rule of marathon training is to arrive on the starting line strong and healthy." according to Amby Burfoot, 1968 Boston marathon champ.

Hit TM and did 2W/run to mile. Got in 3 miles (12:20, 13:14, 13:34). Hard time staying focused so walk time was too slow. Hope to do better tomorrow.
